In this episode Jenn and Mel welcome special guest and friend, Jennifer Putnam.
Here, Jennifer vulnerably shares about her life's journey of discovering identity and purpose in God. Jennifer's life is a beautiful example of wrestling and surrender.
Jennifer shares about a time when she struggled with negative thoughts over herself where she asked the Lord the question: "Who am I?"
And He answered with a specific statement: “I made you to be a blessing”
She encourages listeners to ask the same question - listening for God's response which can become our life's "anchor word".
Jennifer shares about her passions: A desire for the people of God to be the people of God…to look like Christ:
“I long for people to grow in the inner strength out of which the ability to be truly gentle with each other comes”
She identifies with Jacob and the wrestling with the Lord that works out the inner longings of our hearts and who we are. She shares about different times she has "wrestled" with God and the breakthroughs that she has experienced.

In this episode, Jenn and Mel share part 1 of what they felt God put on their hearts recently about delight and wonder.
We define these terms and share scripture about delighting in God
Scripture:
Mark 4/Matthew 13- Parable of the sower and the soils
Psalm 37:4
Quote:
Crosswalk.com- “How can Christians “delight” themselves in the Lord? True delight in Him causes us to take our sights off what we want in order to long for what He desires. When we seek fulfillment in Christ, we will live true lives of delight. The concept of delighting in God is closely intertwined with intimacy with God. A desire for more of His presence. We want to know more, feel more, experience more, worship Him more, converse with Him more, and find more freedom from sin.” “Delighting in the Lord is a verb. We take action to have joy in Christ”

Come back next week and join us for Part 2 as we continue our conversation on Delighting in the Lord and how He delights in us.
In this episode Jenn and Mel share part 3 of the Tend Your Roots series where they hone in on tending what roots you physically (body).
This series is an introduction to the upcoming series called, Becoming Whole.
In the Tend Your Roots series Jenn and Mel seek to define biblically what makes up a human and how we live whole lives. As Christians, we know that in Christ we are all complete, lacking nothing. But, how do we live that out in this world?
Today, we scratch the surface of how we’re created with a physical body to interact in this physical world.
Scripture referenced:
I Corinthians 3:16-17 “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.”
Psalm 139:14 “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
Galatians 6:8 TPT “The harvest you reap reveals the seed that was planted. If you plant the corrupt seeds of self-life into this natural realm, you can expect to experience a harvest of corruption. If you plant the good seeds of Spirit-life you will reap the beautiful fruits that grow from the everlasting life of the Spirit.
Galatians 5:19-22 TPT “sexual immorality, lustful thoughts, pornography, chasing after things instead of God (idolatry), manipulating others (witchcraft, or drug usage), hatred of those that get in your way (envy), senseless arguments, resentment when others are favored, temper tantrums, angry quarrels, only thinking of yourself, being in love with your own opinions, being envious of the blessings of others, murder, uncontrolled addictions, wild parties, and all other similar behavior. But, the fruit of the Spirit(life) is: Divine Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, a life of virtue (goodness), faith, gentleness, and strength of spirit”
Romans 12:1-2 AMP “Therefore I urge you, [b]brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be [c]transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].”
Quotes from today’s episode:
Crosswalk.com: “In simple terms—our bodies were made to carry us through this world. Each of us have a birthdate and an expiration date when we will leave these worn and weathered bodies for God’s Kingdom, should we choose to believe in Him!” - So it’s important to take care of it.
John Paul Jackson: “we are a spirit who has a soul that is housed inside of a body”.
Thanks for joining us on The Journey Expressed!
In this episode Mel and Jenn continue their series called Tend Your Roots: cultivating the people, practices and places that nurture you.
Today's conversation centers around our soul.
SOUL - Mind, will, emotions
This is the part of us who wants to rule, or be in charge
Quotes:
-Got Questions: https://www.gotquestions.org/human-soul.html
“There is often confusion about the human spirit vs. the human soul. In places, Scripture seems to use the terms interchangeably, but there might be a subtle difference. Otherwise, how could the Word of God penetrate “even to dividing soul and spirit” (Hebrews 4:12)?”
-Susan Hill, https://www.susandhill.com/tag/john-paul-jackson/
“The soul’s need for redemption and restoration is the subject of countless books and sermons, but few talk about the problem of an underdeveloped spirit—our main avenue for hearing God’s voice…the soul often rules over the spirit as we try to live the Christian life. In our spirit, we know we’re supposed to turn the other cheek, but the soul overrules, and we slap back. The goal in our spiritual life is to bring the reverse. In order for that to happen, the soul needs healing, *but the spirit also needs growth.”
-*John Paul Jackson:
“We learn at infancy that if we make a fuss about what we want, it will be given to us, and in various ways, we build on that understanding as we grow into adulthood. Through the natural process of life, our souls strengthen. They become dense and thick, like stone. The more we rely on ourselves - on our own understanding and perspective - the less we resemble God. This is why the spirit must rule over the soul; it is the part of us that comes alive when we meet Jesus. It is the part of us that is like Him: His seed and that which makes us the children of God. When the spirit is in control, we will be much more apt to think, feel and act as our Father thinks, feels and acts.”

Part 3
In this episode Mel and Jenn continue relaying encouragement for moms from their friends and mentors. This is part 3 of a 3-part series where we share wisdom and treasures from moms who have gone before us in parenting.
Today, we hear advice and wisdom from Jane Keller, Missy Evans and Jane Burns. The advice conveyed is encouraging and relatable to any mom at any stage. We hope you find hope, inspiration and strength from these conversations, or in the least, they lead you to be grateful for those who have encouraged you along the way!
Memorable quotes from this episode:
Jane Keller:
*“Your parenting style - strict, permissive - whatever --does not matter as much as how well you unconditionally love your kids. Unconditional love is what our children need. That is what gives them the security and freedom they need to be themselves.”
"In one of the kindest moments I've ever experienced with the Father - He told me, 'Your children are mine.' I know that is a personal moment but I share it because it is true for all of us. I know as moms we can have a lot of fear- especially as our kids get older and begin making their own choices in life! But, the knowledge that they belong to God, not me, has brought me such deep peace in some difficult times."*Missy Evans:
“Motherhood is a spiritual battle, and you need to treat it as such. You need to engage in the spiritual battle with the weapons of warfare that are not of this world (2 Corinthians 10:4)…We don’t do it with the weapons of wine (5 o' clock happy hour in the cul-de-sac and complaining about our kids), we don’t do it with working out for 2 hours a day as an escape, we don’t do it by staying super busy so our mind and our heart is so unplugged from our family that we are not engaging in discipleship or have any bandwidth to be available to them. We do it through prayer, through fasting, listening and drawing close in bible study, and through the discipline of contentment and blessing our children.”
Jane Burns:
“Let your kids fail and be disappointed…While they are still with you at home it is such a safe place for them to mess up or deal with disappointment- this allows parents to help kids process their reactions and responses to disappointment so they will know what to do and how to handle it when you are not around.
“‘Stop looking for fruit and rest in My promises.’ This advice came straight from the Lord one day when I was frustrated about the constant pouring into my kids but not feeling like I saw ANY fruit or results. He spoke this word into my heart, and I realized at that moment that I needed to know and learn more of His promises so I searched my Bible for weeks looking for every promise I could find, and it was life changing! For me and my kids…”

“We often focus on the labor of having a baby and how physically and emotionally difficult that can be, but the hardest labor seems to be in letting them go into the world and trusting God.”
Lisa Shea –
“(God) has a purpose for our kids to fulfill. Sometimes that means they will go through things we wish they didn’t have to.”
“We should want our kids to become who God wants them to be, not who we think they should be.”
“God entrusted you with your kids, but they belong to Him…our kids are God’s idea!”

Proverbs 22:6
Melissa Beam –
“Some of the most important conversations about faith, and hopes and dreams have happened from 11pm – 1am”
“Plans and expectations…need to be held loosely…”
“The most powerful parenting tool available is His Word.”
John 15:5
Kathy Whitlow –

In this episode, Jenn and Mel continue in the “Re” Series and are back for Part 2 of their conversation on Remaining (abiding).
We stay on our “agricultural” journey with vines, branches, trees, roots and fruit.
We start by talking about being rooted.
Below is an article that Mel read about the biosphere and how the experiment was finding trees growing fast but toppling over with weak roots and they concluded it was because they were missing an important factor in growth…wind.
We talked about how important storms are in our lives to build perseverance and strength to endure and remain in God.

Drop the mic quotes from sermon:
“God will always give revelation to those who REMAIN”! - in reference to John the disciple. John remained close to Jesus, he leaned on His
chest, he was at the foot of the cross when all the other disciples left Jesus,
he remained close to God in exile and God gifted him with revelation, this is
where we get the book of Revelation from!
“Quit expecting to get revelation from God when you have a
microwave hot pocket relationship with Him”
“You don’t find yourself by looking at yourself. If you want
to “find yourself” you better go to the Creator who formed you. The more
you seek Him, the more you find you.”
In this Episode, Jenn and Mel discuss the word Remain which comes from the root word abide.
Our main scripture is John 15:4-11
We talk about how to remain in God, how to stand and remain in relationships and keep a spirit of unity and how to produce fruit that remains. We share scripture, articles and personal stories of how we have seen what comes in our lives from remaining in unity with other believers and remaining in God.

In today's episode Mel and Jenn pick up where they left off in the last episode for part 2 of their conversation with Jenn's husband, Chris Houston on the topic of "Being Known". If you haven't listened yet, Chris shared some powerful truths in part 1 (episode 29) about what it means to be known by God and how God uses other people to make Himself known to us. Chris shared some insights on shepherding and how those apply to us today as we allow God to shepherd our lives.
In this episode, Chris shares about God shepherding us by protecting us when we don't even know it. Mel shares a personal story of being known by God when her son, Liam was born premature and Jenn shares how she prayed for Mel during that season. Jenn tells a story about sharing the love of God with a man on an airplane ride.
Also covered:
-Chris shares on the power of vulnerability and authenticity
-What keeps us from being vulnerable?
-Habakuk 1:5
-In marriage: ask your spouse when they feel most loved by you
-You only need a core of people to be vulnerable with - Its ok to exercise caution when needed
-Ephesians 4:20

In this episode Jenn and Mel welcome Jenn's husband Chris Houston to talk about the importance of "being known".
In Part 1, Chris shares a game-changing story from when he was learning to hear God's voice. Chris talks about the importance of "YADA" - to be known in the most intimate way. This was a turning point in Chris's life where he realized that his life mattered to God and, how your life matters to God!
We also share on the importance of declaring who God is in the midst of a trial and refer to the many Psalms, where the writer makes themselves known before God, and always ended their process with looking up and remembering the true character of God.
Chris shares from his studies on the concept of God being our shepherd and what that means for us today. That, God, as our shepherd knows us, provides for us, heals us and knows what we are going through and exactly what we need when we need it.
Scripture referenced:
Matthew 27:21-23
Psalm 77
Psalm 23
Come back for Part 2 as Chris shares more profound thoughts on shepherding and on the power of vulnerability. Mel shares a personal story of God making himself known to her when her son was born premature and Jenn shares a personal story of how God made himself known through her to a co-passenger on an airplane ride!
Thanks for joining us on The Journey Expressed!
In this episode Jenn and Mel continue their conversation on the key of love. They share personal stories of how they have fought to keep their love on in their friendship through hard times. We hope that these stories encourage you to apply the key of love in your friendships - and watch the trust, authenticity and intimacy grow! Jenn and Mel also share what God's love provides through His seal of love.
Scripture referenced:
1 Corinthians 13:5 "Love keeps no record of wrongs."
1 John 4:18 NASB “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.”
2 Corinthians 1:21-22 TPT "Now, it is God himself who has anointed us and he is constantly strengthening both you and us in union with Christ. He knows we are his since he has also stamped his seal of love over our hearts and has given us the Holy Spirit like an engagement ring is given to a bride-a down payment of the blessings to come."
*Footnote from Passion Translation: Seal of Love. Greek word for seal is Sphragizo. God has sealed believers with a sevenfold seal.
Sevenfold Seal:
Song of Solomon 8:6 NLT "Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death, its jealousy as enduring as the grave. Love flashes like fire, the brightest kind of flame."
Favorite quotes from Danny Silk - Keep Your Love On:
“In order to begin training yourself to respond in love, the first thing you need to accept is this truth: You cannot control other people. The only person you can control—on a good day—is yourself.” -Danny Silk, Keep Your Love On
“Conditional love and acceptance means that we are willing to pull away from our connection under certain circumstances. The minute we happen to scare the other person or they scare us; we will be tempted to withhold our love and disconnect. And because disconnection only produces more fear and anxiety, we will widen our distance at an alarming rate. This threat effectively prevents two people from feeling free to be themselves because they instinctively know the connection won’t be strong enough to handle it. In contrast, when we commit to unconditional love and acceptance, we protect each other’s freedom. Everything that we offer to the relationship comes freely from our hearts, not under coercion. Yes, committing to pursue and protect my connection with you means that I will be thinking about how my decisions will affect you while making” -Danny Silk, Keep Your Love On: Connection Communication And Boundaries
“Fear and love have opposite agendas and opposite strategies for achieving them. They cannot coexist in a person, relationship or family” - Danny Silk
“Yes, we are called to love all people, but that doesn’t mean that all people have the same access to our core” - Danny Silk

In this episode Mel and Jenn pick up their "Keys Series" and talk about the key (or keyring!) of love. This conversation launches with Matthew 24:9-12 which talks about the end of the age drawing near and a sign for this is that peoples' love will begin to grow cold.
Mel and Jenn share scriptures to give a foundation or a road map on how to "keep your love on" towards God and others, especially in the divisive times we are living in. They also compare the cultural definition of love to the biblical definition of love and discuss the main difference between the two.

Cold Case Christianity
“The Greek word used for “disciple” in the New Testament is 'mathētḗs' and its root, 'math-', means the 'mental effort needed to think something through'."

David Kinnaman, Unchristian: What a new generation really thinks about christianity...and why it matters "Most people in America, when they are exposed to the Christian faith, are not being transformed. They take one step into the door, and the journey ends. They are not being allowed, encouraged, or equipped to love or to think like Christ. Yet in many ways a focus on spiritual formation fits what a new generation is really seeking. Transformation is a process, a journey, not a one-time decision.”

In this episode Mel and Jenn welcome back Pastor Teri Furr from The Refuge Church for Part 2 of her journey discovering God's heart for the end times church.
Today we talk about what it means to be "sealed" or "marked" by God. Pastor Teri shares that we are all made for a "mark". Will we choose to be marked by the world or by God?
Pastor Teri shares about cultivating intimacy with Jesus and how this depth-in-God is part of our being marked by God. We learn that you cannot be marked by both God and the world and how that is equivalent to "lukewarmness" and duplicity, which God does not tolerate. Pastor Teri also shares a hope-filled word for us all that this preparation of our hearts should not be such a confusing and difficult thing to figure out.
Mantra from Pastor Teri's 12-part series Filling Our Lamps:
1) We will not be afraid
2) We will not be offended
3) We will not stumble
4) We will not be seduced by lies
5) We will not draw back in passivity

In this episode Pastor Teri shares about her preparation leading up to this series as well as a compelling message on what we are to be preparing for. We talk about the fact that part of preparation is removing the stony places in our hearts and dealing with our offenses toward God. Pastor Teri gives a hope-filled account of how God intends to release His glory like never before through the Church in the end times.

In this episode Jenn and Mel pick up their conversation with Missy Evans on the book of Song of Solomon.
Song of Solomon is one of the oldest books in the Bible. We must remember to read the Old Testament through the lens of the New Testament. Missy references the NT books John and 1 John and connects God's love for mankind.
Song of Solomon helps us understand the type of church that Jesus is coming back for. This is an apocalyptic text.
Missy shares about "spiritual preparation" and what we (the church) are getting ready for and how to prepare for Jesus' return. She shares about how to hear God's voice and to discern how He speaks.
Favorite one-liners:
"When we know the depth of the love of our heavenly Father for us, we can be prepared for what's ahead"
"It's not just what His voice sounds like. Its the kind of language He (God) would use"
"Prayer is the expression of our belief"
"There are churches and individuals who are hearing different invitations at this time"
"Its ok if you're not ready. This story is His story. He's the one that sets His seal upon you"
In today's episode Jenn and Mel introduce one of their friends and mentors, Missy Evans.
Missy shares about how the book of Song of Solomon has radically changed her life and provides strategy for the Church to prepare for Jesus' return.
Tune in to hear how Missy has come to be set free from a fear of failure, perfectionism and has come to discover Jesus' radical love for her, all through understanding the mysteries of God through the story of Song of Solomon.
Some of our favorite 1-liners:
God is the "fountainhead of emotion"
We're in all the places (of the story of Song of Solomon) all of the time - growing in intimacy
This story is linear and circular
4 invitations from Jesus:
-Arise!
-Come with Me!
-Open for Me (give me full access to your heart)!
-Set Me as a seal!
Mature Bridal Partnership:
-Radical obedience
-Desire for more spiritual power and authority
-Boldness in public ministry

How to have a lifestyle of rest and wonderment
How to become aware of God's presence
How to develop a personal liturgy (practice) to encounter God

Numbers 14
In today’s episode we introduce our friend and local Pastor, David Brown. David shares some amazing insight and gives a foundation for the biblical concept of Rest. Spoiler alert: you may be mind blown as you discover that rest, delight and wonder are intertwined.
We believe this is a much needed word for the times we are living in now.
You may want to grab a cup of coffee and something to take notes in for these 2 episodes - they contain nuggets of truth that, if you're like us, we believe you'll want to come back to.

In this episode we break down the elements that were the same in each of our “bridal dreams” from 2015.
Recap of what was the same in both dreams:
Interpretations
Black Dress:
-Humanity/our soul
-In Jenn’s dream the black dress had silver roses on it- Redemption
-Song of Solomon 1:5a ESV “I am very dark, but lovely…”
-Song of Solomon 2:1 ESV “I am a rose of Sharon…”
Renewing of the vows:
-Returning to our first love
-Reawakening
-Rev 2:3ESV “I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.”
Ceremony outside or in a tent:
-Mel- "I kept hearing over Covid, this phrase 'church without walls, we are going outside the building'."
-It is what is happening in the physical now (Covid times)
-Hebrews 13:13 "So, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach."
Mother of the bride:
-Signifies the local church. Helping to prepare the bride (of Christ)
Smaller rooms for preparation:
-Meeting in smaller groups (5 fold ministry Ephesians 4:11-15)
-Individual preparation for each believer with Jesus
White dress over the black:
-Therighteousness of Christ (Galatians 3:27) -The believer's longing to be clothed with heavenly garments (2 Corinthians 5:1-10) -2 Corinthians 5:21NASB “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
-Not mentioned in this episode but significant in our studies: Being baptized in the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5), clothed in power (Luke 24:49)
People leaving:
-People are either running to God or running to alternatives
Number 10:
-Matthew 25:1-13 Parable of the 10 virgins
-Timing
Dreams ending before the ceremony:
-Perhaps we are on the cusp of a great awakening and returning to the Lord, with believers clothed in the power of the Holy Spirit!

Oct. 19 Mel’s quiet time: Asked the Lord, “What’s on your heart?” He answered, “the preparation of the bride. To embrace her humanity like I did on this earth but you know she is clothed with righteousness priestly garments, holiness, love. She is clothed and adorned by heaven. I want her to know who she is and to fully walk in her identity and as each of my sons and daughters walks in this identity and their own destiny she will become unified with one main purpose and vision to love me and to love one another. I’m shaking my bride to test her footing, her foundation. Her foundation is rooted and established in love I’m looking for a lover made up of lovers. What is dividing my bride? Not outside circumstances, but a lack of the foundation of love (Ephesians 3:17).
