In All Things: Recent Episodes

The purpose of this podcast is to encourage you in your walk with Lord. As we go through this journey of life, we tend to experience a myriad of "things" (experiences and seasons) that mark different chapters of our lives. I hope that as we walk through life, we each seek Christ and strive to honor Him in all things.

Matthew 18:19-20 tells us, "Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

But does this verse mean how it's often interpreted?  Join in on today's conversation to find out how we can dig into the context of these verses and find out what they really mean!

There are many verses that we use as believers that are just not...used correctly.  Most of the time, we probably just don't know otherwise.  Join in today's conversation to take a look at two common Bible verses that have been taken out of context to be used for a completely different purpose than originally intended.  We'll look at Jeremiah 29:11 and 1 Corinthians 6:19, dig into their contexts, and discuss why it's so important to do so.  I hope you learn as much as I did in this!

Have you noticed the increase of talking about the End Times? Have you ever thought or been told that the study of the end times (eschatology) is irrelevant because it's "too far off" or that it's just for scholars? The disciples asked Jesus while He was on earth how they would know when He would be returning. Jesus answered them. We are given SO much information on the end times - that in and of itself shows us that we are to know about this! Join today's conversation and let's chat about why this topic is important.

Although apologetics sounds like a scary topic, it's very simple. It is providing evidence for a belief and then explaining why that belief is reasonable. Let's take a look together at how we can dig deeper into finding out the WHY to our faith. We may know what we believe, but do we know why we believe it? Can we explain why it's true?

Resources:

  • Alisa Childers has a blog, book, and podcast. She touches on hot topics, explains things clearly, and is fun to listen to!
  • Mike Winger is a pastor who is so gracious, humble, and thorough. His podcast is fascinating and every week he answers 20 questions live on Facebook.
  • J. Warner Wallace's approach to explaining the truth of the Bible is fascinating. He uses tactics similar to what he'd use when solving a cold-case homicide crime. He has several books to read and I highly recommend listening to this podcast episode.

Pride is  sure a struggle for us.  We trust our own wisdom, we think too highly of ourselves, and we make it "all about us" way too often.  Join today's conversation as we talk about what the Bible has to say about pride and how we can approach our life in humility.

Verses:

  • Philippians 2:3-4: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
  • Proverbs 22:4 “Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life."
  • Psalms 25:9 says, “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.”

Quotes:

  • CS Lewis once said, "Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.”

God is faithful. We know this about Him, but how often do we forget? And we allow doubt to creep into our minds and it plants a seed. How do we know He'll come through for us? How do we know He'll fulfill His promises?

In this episode, I talk about what it means for God to be faithful. And I share what it means to "raise an Ebenezer" so we can learn to do the same to remember God's faithfulness.

Passages:

  • Mark 8:1-21
  • 1 Samuel 7:3-12

Verses:

  • 1 Samuel 17:37: “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
  • 2 Timothy 2:13: “if we are faithless, He remains faithful.”
  • Psalms 86:15 says. "But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness."
  • 1 Corinthians 10:13: "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let yoube tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."
  • 1 John 1:9: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

I love  hosting!  I love having people over, welcoming them into my space, and making them feel at home.  And I dream of the day I can make a home for my family. But no matter what life stage we are in, we have the opportunity to make our homes havens.  A safe place for anyone to come to.  In this episode, I walk through what it takes to make a home a haven...and it's not much!  Safety, openness, relationships....that's what truly matters.
But then for ourselves, how can we make our homes havens for us, as well?  Listen in as I talk more about this!

Quotes:
- Jani Ortlund says this, “I believe that a godly home is a foretaste of heaven.  Our homes, imperfect as they are, must be a haven from the chaos outside.  They should be a reflection of our eternal home, where troubled souls find peace, weary hearts find rest, hungry bodies find refreshment, lonely pilgrims find communion, and wounded spirits find compassion.”

In this episode, I walk you through the process of finding a church. From my own experience, I share five things to look for to ensure that you are at a church that is following closely in the steps of what the Bible teaches.

  1. The church needs to be biblically sound.
  2. Sound doctrine needs to be at the foundation of the church.
  3. There should be involvement of the whole congregation.
  4. Church leadership has the responsibility to keep individuals in the church accountable.
  5. Church leadership should be kept accountable.

Verses:

  • Matthew 18:15-20: “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector. “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”
  • In 1 Timothy 4:16, it says, “ Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.”
  • Hebrews 13:17: “Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.”
  • 2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God (other versions say inspired by God) and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”
  • In 1 Timothy 4:16, it says, “ Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.”
  • 1 Timothy 1:9-11: " We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.”

We all need rest. The easiest rest to take is the one the world offers - in the form of self-care. But there's a different way - one that Christ offers...a Sabbath rest.

Verses:

  • Philippians 2:3-5: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:”
  • Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
  • Genesis 2:2-3: “By the seventh day, God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work of creating that He had done.”
  • Isaiah 58:13-14: "“If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord’s holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.” The mouth of the Lord has spoken."

Quotes:

  • “We don’t have to run to earn rest, we run fueled by a posture of rest.” - Rebekah Lyons, Rhythms of Renewal

Fear is dominating our lives right now, and we need to kick it to the curb and show it WHO is Boss - JESUS!  Tune in today for a conversation about fear - learning that we really don't have anything to fear because of who is in control, and realizing that fear does NOT come from the Lord!

Scriptures:
- 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”
-1 John 4:18 says, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love”

Quotes:
- “when we feed our doubt, we drown our faith.  but when we feed our faith, we drown our doubt.”

When we accept Christ, we are given TWO gifts. Complete and free forgiveness for our sins, which allows us to live eternally in heaven with Him, if we accept that gift. The second gift is one for our time here on earth. The Holy Spirit. In today's episode, I talk about what role the Holy Spirit plays in our lives and how we can learn to listen to Him.

Scriptures:

  • "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?..." 1 Corinthians 6:19
  • "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever - the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you." John 14:16-17
  • “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” John 14:26

Quotes:

  • Lysa Terkeurst said in one of her books: “Just that morning, I’d been praying and asking God to show Himself to me. I asked the God of the universe to intersect my life with His revelation, then got up from my prayer and forgot to look. Forgot to seek Him. Forgot to keep my heart in tune with His voice and His invitation.”

Who else is a people pleaser? Why is it so difficult to say "no" sometimes? Join us today as we talk about allowing the Holy Spirit guide us in saying yes instead of feeling obligated in one way or another.

Verses:

  • Galatians 1:10 says, “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
  • 1 Thess 2:4 talks about this: “On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts.”
  • Proverbs 29:25: “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.”
  • Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,”

Quotes:

  • “If the activity we’re considering is in line with God’s work but our approach to that activity isn’t, we will overdraw ourselves and bankrupt this part of our lives. A good approach to something requires enough resources to handle the demands of that activity.” -Lysa Terkeurst, "The Best Yes"'
  • “The decisions we make dictate the schedules we keep. The schedules we keep determine the lives we live. The lives we live determine how we spend our souls.” -Lysa Terkeurst, "The Best Yes"
  • Someone once said, “The only thing wrong with trying to please everyone is that there’s always at least one person who will remain unhappy. You.”

The Best Yes is a wonderful book by Lysa Terkeurst on this topic. I love it!

Join us as we explore what it means to be a part of the body of Christ.  What is our role?  How can we serve Christ in His Church, and within our own strengths and passions?

Verses:
1 Corinthians 12:25-27 says, “So that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.”

You can find many of the spiritual gifts listed in 1 Cor. 12, 1 Peter, and Romans.

Quotes:
“Your life calling is where the burdens of your heart intersect with the passions of your heart.”

Visit gotquestions.org - it's a great resource that contains a library of questions and answers from a solid, Biblical perspective.

I encourage you to find an online resource (perhaps recommended by your pastor), where you can take a spiritual gifts assessment.

In our first official episode, we talk about finding true satisfaction in Christ and not relying on our present circumstances to fill our hearts.

Verses:
1 Timothy 6:6-7 says, “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.”
Romans 15:13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as your trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power fo the Holy Spirit.”

Quote from the episode:
"I used to think contentment was based on my circumstances. I then came to think it was based on my response to those circumstances. Now, I believe contentment is based on my satisfaction being found in Christ DESPITE my circumstances."

Listen to the song "Getting Good" by Lauren Alaina.  It talks about realizing what you have and not taking anything for granted.  Another great perspective for contentment!
