I started my photography business in 1999, and I had my twins in 2006. So I had been in business for a while before becoming a mom and I remember feeling super worried about how I was going to run a business while also being a good mom once they were born.
I was afraid the business would take too much time and would pull me away from my kids. I was worried that my kids would pull me away from the work I need to do in my business. And I worked really hard to design the perfect work/ life balance.
Well, those twins turned 18 last month, and they graduated from high school a few days ago, and what I’ve learned over the past 18 years is that perfect work/life balance is a myth! And so on today’s podcast, thats what I’m going to talk about!

During a coaching call with my level two mentoring program, Amplified, we had a conversation about some of the harder parts of running a business that don't get talked about enough. Like those moments in your business when you kind of question everything. When you ask yourself, what am I even doing? I could go out and get a job and not deal with all the hardships of being an entrepreneur and running my own business. This conversation was really helpful for the group, so I'm talking about it more in this podcast episode.
I think there's a lot out there in the photography world about living your dreams and I totally believe all of that, but it's also true that it can be really hard and scary. Sometimes it can even feel isolating, and those are very real feelings that a lot of people experience. The good news is, you don't have to run your photography business in isolation! In this episode, I dive into this concept and talk about the importance of community.

Why does fear often come up during the creative process? This is something I notice the photographers in my group coaching program experience, and I myself am experiencing it as I prepare to launch my new Certification Program. Fear is a very natural and normal part of creativity.
In my coaching program, we talk about clarity. That is the foundation for your brand, and it also gives you great direction in your marketing. And a lot of the time when my students are working through this piece of the program, fear comes up for them. In this episode, I share about why that happens and how to get past it when it does.

Recently, I found a box of photos I had printed from the beginning of my career. As I was looking at the pictures, I was surprised by how beautiful they were. At the time I took those photos, I was so full of self doubt and I remember thinking my work wasn't good enough. Looking at them the other day made me feel proud and got me thinking about how things might be different if I had known at the time how good my work actually was.

Recently, I posted a reel about why I don't pose babies in my photography business. It was a touchy subject, as some photographers didn't like that. In this episode, I talk more about why I don't pose babies.
I've been a newborn photographer for over 24 years, and I choose not to pose them because of safety concerns. Now, I know one can be trained to pose babies safely; however, my personal belief has always been that if you have to be trained how not to injure a baby for a photograph, perhaps you shouldn't be doing that pose in the first place. The one piece of advice would I give to photographers just starting out is don’t be afraid to ask for help. I started my photography business as a side hustle and was completely self taught. I felt guilty charging money for my work and always worried that someone would call me out as a fraud.
In this episode, I share a vulnerable story about the one time I was actually accused of copying another photographer. I was new to my business, and it felt like all my fears and imposter syndrome challenges were coming to life. The incident had a huge impact on me, so I hope in sharing this story, it helps you feel less alone. I also share about my new Sandra Coan Certification program coming later this spring and the inspiration behind it. Here's my morning routine. I wake up, drink some coffee, journal and then walk two to three miles. Sometimes I listen to books or music, but lately I’ve been listening to Anderson Cooper’s new podcast, "All There Is". If you are processing a loss in your own life, I highly recommend it.
I bring it up because one of his guests was talking about a film she was making of her father and his journey with dementia. In the episode, she discussed her need to make art and asked herself, "Why? What am I doing with this camera?"

The next question in our New Year's series is "When?". Now that we know what it is you want, why you want it, and who you need to be and how you need to show up to make it happen, you need to know when you're going to start turning your dreams into your reality.
Business, and marketing in particular, is a marathon—not a sprint. The work you put in now will start paying off three months from now. So, if you want a busy spring and summer and fall, your marketing needs to start in Q1. If you are waiting for the perfect time to do this work, it will never come. You will always have your life to live and other things pulling you in all directions. It's important to give yourself a start date!

When I listen to my gut, I never regret it. Intuition is a powerful thing and should be respected. But sometimes, when facing a big decision, it's hard to tell the difference between intuition and fear.
First of all, when I'm talking about fear, I'm not talking about the healthy "don't walk down that dark alley alone at night" kind of fear. That kind of fear is aligned with your intuition and needs to be listened to. I'm talking about the kind of fear that doesn't serve you—the fear that holds you back, keeps you playing small and gets in the way of you making decisions in your life and business that will move you forward.
Now, I personally believe that we are all put here on this planet to live the best, most fulfilling life we can. We are here to grow and learn and serve others. That belief is one of the reasons why I'm so passionate about helping photographers thrive in their businesses.
Being an artist is a gift. It's a calling. You are the only person on the planted with YOUR specific gift. No other person in the entire world can see or capture things the exact way that you do. As a photographer, you are called to share whatever it is you see and capture with the world.

Welcome to Day 2 of the Lighting Series! We started the conversation off by talking about what dealing with low light or bad light is actually costing you and your business. That cost goes beyond just impacting your photos. Yes, bad or low light will have an impact on the images you create. But it also causes stress, hurts your brand and ultimately hurts your business.
As you may or may not know, I was a natural light photographer for about 12 years. I was really stuck in this cycle of beautiful weather meant beautiful photos, not beautiful weather meant bad photos for a very long time.
The reason that I stayed stuck for so long was because I had a lot of fear and misconceptions around artificial lighting—what it looked like and what it meant to work with it. I know I’m not alone—many photographers do! In this episode, I dive right into those fears and misconceptions.

Have you ever had someone say "Wow! That's a great picture... you must have a really good camera!". It drives you crazy right?! Because every photographer knows that it's not about the gear... it's about the person using it! Well, the same thing can be said about lighting equipment.
