One of the major reasons we put on an event like Dish Fest is to give back to local charities. There’s perhaps no one more deserving of benefiting from it than Jennifer Caraway at The Joy Bus, a nonprofit that delivers chef-inspired meals and home visits to cancer patients around the Valley.

In 2025, Caraway expects The Joy Bus to expand its operation by moving The Joy Bus Diner to a larger location with expanded space for its kitchen and meal prep areas. Caraway also would like to expand the meal delivery service to other cities across the state of Arizona in 2025.

You can help the mission of this Valley-grown nonprofit by coming to Dish Fest 2025. A portion of the proceeds from our annual foodie event benefits The Joy Bus and their unique purpose. Tickets on sale here!

The international art world will convene in the West’s Most Western Town this spring with elite galleries, superstar talent and audience-friendly breakouts – plus a touch of bronc-busting cowboy cool.

“Phoenix is ready to take the stage.” —Scottsdale Ferrari Art Week co-founder Jason Rose

What is Scottsdale Art Week?Conceived by Valley PR whiz Jason Rose and art dealer Trey Brennen, Scottsdale Art Week is an inaugural, four-day art and design fair modeled after The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF), Art Basel and other world-renowned markets of moveable art. Co-owned by PHOENIX parent company Cities West Media and presented by Scottsdale Ferrari, this luxury event is the first of its kind in the Valley.

Scottsdale Ferrari Art Week
March 20-23, 2025
scottsdaleartweek.com

SAW BasicsThough SAW-related events will be staged throughout the Valley, the main gallery marketplace will be located at WestWorld of Scottsdale, home of Barrett-Jackson and other big-ticket annual events.

As this issue went to press, organizers were aiming to recruit 120 galleries from around the world to showcase their paintings, sculptures, jewelry and other media at SAW.

Contemporary art and design will be well-represented by dealers at SAW, which will also feature a special emphasis on Indigenous art, via a partnership with Heard Museum and prominent Arizona artists.

SAW organizers are also planning off-site events in coordination with Taliesin West, Scottsdale Museum of the West and Desert Botanical Garden.

Art Fair ForebearersSAW was conceived in the spirit of these esteemed luxury art fairs.

TEFAF New York

Long regarded as the world’s largest and most prestigious art fair, The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) debuted in Maastricht, Netherlands, in 1988, carving out a niche with its high-profile sales of Old Master paintings and other antique works. SAW director of development Michael Plummer (see page 13) brought the fair to New York City in 2016, where it leans into modern and contemporary art, including a Picasso painting that fetched close to $2 million in 2024.

Art Basel: Miami

This stateside imprint of the respected Swiss art fair “completely altered the economic landscape in Miami Beach” upon its December 2002 debut, according to Plummer. Attracting more than 80,000 visitors, the 2019 edition of the show boasted multiple seven-figure sales but is perhaps best known for Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian, an anti-art classic featuring a banana duct-taped to a wall, which famously sold for $120,000.

Frieze Art Fair

The London-based arts giant now stages fairs in four cities (London, New York, Los Angeles and Seoul) and has earned a reputation for creative and audience-friendly programming. At the 2016 Frieze New York fair, artist David Horvitz hired a pickpocket to secretly place small sculptures in the pockets of fair attendees. A-list stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Downey Jr. and Jane Fonda were among the 32,000 visitors at Frieze Los Angeles in 2024.

Interview with a Director: Michael Plummer “This is a coming-out party [for the Valley] on the national stage,” SAW director of development Michael Plummer promises. As the founder of TEFAF New York and a former executive with auction giants Christie’s and Sotheby’s, the Wharton-educated art fair expert was a natural choice when co-founders Jason Rose and Trey Brennen sought a seasoned pro to lead SAW.

Photo Courtesy Michael PlummerIn layman’s terms, what does a director of development do?

Well, I’m bringing a vision to the fair based on my experience creating three other [fine art] fairs. It’s about creating the dealer experience, which is one audience, and creating the visitor experience, which is the other audience. And both have to be great. You need to have good dealers and they need to bring good stuff, and they have to be energetic and present well. And you need to keep them happy [so] they keep coming back. At the same time, you want your visitors to come in and be surprised and delighted and have fun. See things they haven’t seen before and learn things they didn’t know.

How will SAW be different from local art festivals we’ve seen in the Valley?

It’s a luxury experience. You go in, you see beautiful things, and they’re not just artworks, but great pieces of design, furniture, some jewelry. You don’t need to be an art collector to enjoy it, it’s meant for people of all tastes. There will be photography, Indigenous art… we want to give people other options besides Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware to fill their homes.

So, this will be different than, say, strolling the art gallery district in Old Town Scottsdale?

Well, think about New York City. It has more galleries than any other city in the United States, but I created TEFAF New York, where we ended up bringing in all these additional galleries, from Europe and elsewhere in the world. It’s a matter of scale and variety and density… and that creates a different kind of energy. Rather than expect people to travel to the art, we’re moving into a world where the art needs to come to the people.

Are you expecting to draw an audience from outside Arizona?

Absolutely. An art fair [is] hugely beneficial to a community, for real estate values, for hotels, for restaurants and hospitality. A good example is Art Basel… when it came to Miami, it was enormously successful from the start, and in one of the quietest weeks in the off-season, early December. And suddenly, by virtue of them coming there, it became peak season. Restaurants were sold out, streets became thick with traffic… it transformed the economics of Miami and the profile of Miami on a national stage.

Visualizing SAWScottsdale Ferrari Art Week will occupy the entire 117,000-square-foot North Hall space at WestWorld of Scottsdale. Besides gallery activations and art, SAW will feature food and wine, artist engagements and exciting specialty events.

Opening Night: March 20The ASU Art Museum will be the beneficiary of SAW’s Opening Night Gala. Visit scottsdaleartweek.com for more details.

The LayoutTo imbue SAW with the energy and feel of a gallery or museum, organizers will erect roughly more than 30,000 square-feet of modular wall units within the hangar-like North Hall. It will feel intimate, not convention-like.

The SceneryTo capitalize on Arizona’s exquisite spring weather and give SAW an indoor-outdoor feel, the North Hall’s massive garage doors will be opened to afford guests lordly views of the nearby Superstition Mountains.

4 Experiential HighlightsGalleries & Dealers

Among the earliest galleries to commit to SAW was DE SARTHE, a prominent contemporary gallery with locations in Hong Kong and Scottsdale. Though a full list was not available as this issue went to press, organizers say that galleries from as far away as Turkey and Japan had confirmed for SAW.

Indigenous Art

SAW organizers also envision special programming highlighting Arizona’s Indigenous arts movement. Speakers include Navajo textile artist Melissa Cody. Mixed-media legend Tony Abeyta was also in talks to appear as this issue went to press.

Special Events

Tentative SAW programming also includes a fashion show and VIP experiences conceived in concert with Phoenix Art Museum and Heard Museum.

Ferraris!

“In car terms, our original vision was a Volvo and now it’s literally a Ferrari,” Rose says of the fair, which signed on Valley supercar dealer Scottsdale Ferrari as the title sponsor and subsequently reconceived itself as an A-list event. The dealership is expected to have merchandise on-site.

Fair Fact

According to director of development Michael Plummer, art fairs represent a significant investment for participating galleries and vendors. Between shipping costs, security, handling, staging and other fees, the cost of participation can run well into five figures.

Rodeo bonus

In a salute to Scottsdale’s frontier heritage, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan will be on-hand for the Cactus Classic Reining Competition, to be held concurrent with SAW at WestWorld. Visit brumleyevents.com/cactus-reining-classic for more information.

PHOENIX magazine editor-in-chief Craig Outhier and Events/Marketing manager Johann Warnholtz join podcast host Matthew Johnson on this episode to debate, react and give thoughts on the winners from the recent Arizona Craft Beer Awards.

Make sure to get your tickets to Saturday’s ACBAFestival at azcraftbeer.com and come celebrate the best in Arizona beer with us!

The 2nd annual Arizona Craft Beer Awards named Pedal Haus Brewery the 2023 Brewery of the Year during a private ceremony in Tempe on October 6, 2023. The ACBA handed out gold/silver/bronze medals in 19 beer categories and a Best in Show medal awarded to Dragoon Pils from Dragoon Brewing Company.

53 breweries submitted 194 beers to this year’s competition. 65 judges gathered on Saturday, September 16 to sample, submit notes and feedback, and decide this year’s winners. All submissions were placed into one of 19 categories, randomly numbered and blindly tasted by judging panels that included professional brewers, home brewers, cicerones and industry insiders. Beers were judged according to GABF guidelines.

On behalf of the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, PHOENIX magazine would like to give special thanks to several people behind the scenes who helped make this year’s awards and judging process bigger and better. John Rudolph of the Arizona Society of Homebrewers managed the judging; Melissa Osborne from Four Peaks Brewing managed the back of house operations (organizing submissions and categories). Thanks to our sponsor Shamrock Foods for giving us space to judge and to Chef David Miles for offering us his test kitchen.

Brewery of the YearPedal Haus Brewery

Pedal Haus had 18 total points. 3 gold medals for Pilsner, Beach Cruiser and Desert Classic.

GABF scoring method: 6 points for gold, 5 for silver, 4 for bronze.

Runners up:

  • Roses by the Stairs Brewing — 14 points: 2 silver, 1 bronze
  • Wren House Brewing — 14 points: 1 gold, 2 bronze 2023 Guild Director’s AwardAyla Kapahi, Borderlands Brewing

Kapahi was honored by the Arizona Craft Brewer’s Guild in part for her work on the Las Hermanas project, a collaboration of female brewers from the U.S. and Mexico. This year’s beer collab was a Vienna Lager that was brewed in July — on both sides of the border– and hit the taproom at Borderlands last month. The proceeds of sales from the beer benefits a scholarship program for female brewers. During her acceptance speech on Friday night, Kapahi encouraged her fellow female brewers in the room to join her on her next trip saying “we need to step up and we need to keep pursuing these kinds of projects because Arizona craft beer is fantastic!”

Best in ShowDragoon Pils, Dragoon Brewing Company

Not since a brewery taproom opened two blocks from my house have I been more excited for a new spot to open than this!

Today on the podcast, we get a sneak peak at Catalyst Crafted Ales in Tempe. It’s the same people who were at Ad Astra in Prescott. They closed Ad Astra in the summer and moved down here to the Valley to focus on Catalyst Crafted Ales and based on the conversation we had with co-owner and head brewer Will Walthereson, it’s one of the more highly anticipated places to open here in the Valley in quite some time. Not only are they bringing their award-winning barrel-aged program, but also a game-changing approach to seltzers… plus they’ll have a taco shop on site from SALT sea and land tacos that started as a food truck and is now a brick-and-mortar location inside Catalyst Crafted Ales. Enrique, the head chef, joins us in the middle of this interview to tell us about his specialty: the Octopus taco!

Papago Brewing has a long history of introducing the Valley to unique, exotic and rare beers that you couldn’t find anywhere else in Arizona. The south Scottsdale hangout was the original craft beer bottle shop go-to for beer lovers back in the early 2000’s, until it shuttered in 2016.

Leah Huss was the owning and managing partner at Papago until 2013 when she and her husband Jeff opened Huss Brewing in Tempe. Over the past ten years, Huss has grown to become the third largest craft brewery in Arizona and owns the Papago brand.

On this episode, Johann and Matt interview Jeff and Leah Huss inside the reborn Papago Brewing Company in its brand new location at Mesa Riverview (Dobson and Loop 202). We explore the rich legacy of Papago, Huss’ growth in the past decade and Jeff and Leah’s journey on the Arizona craft beer scene.

The lineup of Huss beers are on tap, along with several Papago beers and hard to find out of state beers. The new Papago location also offers a food menu.

Trevor Herd and Angelo Pisano are two guys with Midwest roots and Pacific Northwest influence. The two co-owners of Steel Cactus Brewing grew up in Michigan and had their journeys take them to Oregon & Washington before ending up here in the desert Southwest.

Steel Cactus Brewing opened in December in Gilbert thanks to careful navigation through the pandemic years, Trevor’s handiwork in building the bar and Angelo’s expertise in the brewing process. Both men have traveled the world to sample beer and know what they enjoy, so they brew the styles near and dear to them, often named after cherished memories from their upbringing in Michigan.

Styles range from the default flagship Blue Boy Ale (reminiscent of a Bud Light) to Quarton Midwest IPA (think Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale). On the wild side, try the Berry Parfait fruited sour, part of Angelo’s sour series of beers.

The brewery taproom is small, but friendly as you’d expect from a couple of Midwest guys. Herd and Pisano already plan to renovate the building to increase customer capacity and allow for food trucks. It’s open from 3-8pm most days and might change based on sporting events.

Fresh is at the heart of what they do at Hundred Mile Brewing Co. and they’re very good at it.

Behind the strength and vision of owner Sue Rigler, the beer-making talents of head brewer Valerie Adee and culinary skills of chefs Nick and Tyler, this new brewpub in Tempe is a destination for beer lovers and foodies alike.

Johann and I chat with Sue and Valerie about beer styles, food on the menu, their backgrounds and what brought them together to open Hundred Mile Brewing near Rural Road and Loop 202. Plus, we quiz Sue on her Arizona geography knowledge to see if she knows what places on the map are 100 miles away from her brewery in Tempe.

It’s a fun conversation and an even better spot to experience in person. I’d recommend the short rib for dinner and the Crowd Surfer Mexican lager to drink.

The hard work comes before the pour.

On this first Beer Review podcast episode of 2023, we chat with Justin Cross, CEO and founder of Earn Your Booze and Alex Phillips, the director of sales and marketing for Grand Canyon Brewing Co. The two companies collaborated on a new beer called Dead Hanger Pale Ale, a tropical hazy with very little bitterness and a lot of grapefruit flavor that lingers on the tongue with each sip.

The idea is for beer drinkers to set fitness goals for themselves — whether its a 30 minute daily walk or a 45 minute session of intense push-ups, pull-ups and dead hangs — all in an effort to earn the beer at the end of the day.

We learn that Grand Canyon Brewing is looking to possibly expand into the Valley and even adults can fall into the display river that flows through the Williams location.

Give us a listen on your favorite podcast app or device and cheers to the new year!
