On this podcast we speak to the parents of the Schmidt Family whose kids stumbled into starting Happy Pops after rescuing their own Horse, Louie, from a kill pen in Louisiana. Their son, Merrill, teamed up with his brother Owen to sell pet popsicles for horse and animal rescue. Happy Pops took off and now donates 10% of their profits to animal rescue. When an editor at the Globe invited Michael Blowen to the race track one day, it sparked a new interest and, eventually, a new career. Blowen became a racehorse owner with several partners, and, in time, found himself working on the back stretch of Suffolk Downs for trainer Carlos Figueroa to learn more about horses.
After retiring from the Globe in 2000, Blowen accepted a position as the Operations Manager for the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation in Kentucky, and soon after, in 2003, he launched Old Friends, the non-profit Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, KY., that now supports over 200 retired horses, including numerous stallions.

Samantha Capoferri (Cap-oh-fairy) is the owner and head trainer at Gallifrey Farm, LLC., a private Dressage training facility outside of Savannah, GA, as well as a full-time Professor of Equestrian Studies at Savannah College of Art and Design. She graduated from Meredith Manor International Equestrian College in 2007 with certifications at the highest levels in Riding Instruction, Equine Training and Equine Sports Massage Therapy. She holds a B.A. in Equine Studies from West Virginia University (2009) and a M.S. in Kinesiology from Georgia Southern University (2017).
Samantha is a USDF Bronze and Silver medalist with scores earned on self-trained horses and is currently working towards her Gold Medal. Until the COVID shut down she is enrolled in the USDF ‘L’ Judge program and hopes to be able to complete this in APR 2021. Her personal horses and passion lie in Draft Crosses and they have been Champion or Reserve Champion
from Training Level to FEI for the USDF All Breeds awards every year since 2015.
Her teachers, Felicitas von Nuemann Cosel (First Choice Farm, MD) and Cynthia Thaxton (High Point Farm, GA) help her to instill proper biomechanical work with horses to bring about the natural beauty and harmony of any breed through the levels of Dressage. She is a firm believer
that Dressage is for every horse regardless of the saddle on their back. She utilizes her degree in Kinesiology to help teach this delicate work to her riders by focusing on their own biomechanics in the saddle to focus on the independence of the seat to bring about the quality of gaits from their horses.

A lifelong horse lover, Amy Daum began her career in the horse industry more than two decades ago after first earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Writing from the University of Pittsburgh, and then a Bachelor of Science degree in Equine Business Management from Johnson & Wales University. After working in equine insurance for five years, both in underwriting and in retail sales, she then joined the U.S. Eventing Association where for seven years her roles included Director of Communications, editor of Eventing USA (the USEA’s national bi-monthly magazine), and Project Manager of the USEA’s American Eventing Championships. In 2008 she switched gears back to the insurance industry as the CEO and Managing Partner of Broadstone Equine Insurance Agency, and in 2019 Broadstone became a division of Marshall & Sterling Insurance, one of the nation’s top 25 privately-owned insurance agencies. Amy’s riding background spans across disciplines, from Western Pleasure and Hunter/Jumpers as a teenager, and Eventing and Dressage as an adult. Horses and horsepeople are her passion, and she considers herself blessed to have a career that allows her to combine that passion with a mind for business. When she’s not working to help horse owners find the best insurance plans to protect their horses, she’s on the dance floor as a ballroom and Latin dancer, or at home refereeing skirmishes between her cat Roo, and Ella, her recent German Shepherd rescue.

Amanda founded H.O.O.V.E.S. (Healing of Our Veterans Equine Services) with a vision to reach out to other veterans and share her healing experience. Since founding her non-profit in 2009, she has helped hundreds of veterans and their family members with healing from PTSD, grief, and re-integration struggles. She has also rescued and rehabilitated over 100 horses (10 of which were wild mustangs). Amanda currently resides in Ohio with her family.
