Jesus dropped the reverse Uno card on leprosy when He touched the man plagued by the disease. Normally, when anyone came in contact with someone with leprosy, they would become unclean and fear they might also become a leper—a death sentence in those days. But Jesus didn’t become unclean. Instead, the reverse happened: the man with leprosy became clean and was able to rejoin the community. The Shepherd of Hermas ends with ten parables given to Hermas by the Shepherd. These parables range from illustrations about two cities, an elm tree and a grapevine, a shepherd of luxury and a shepherd of punishment, to a cosmic willow tree and twelve mountains. All the parables drive home the same point: what are you going to do with God’s Word and how are you going to live once you know God’s commands?

The Twelve Commandments from the Shepherd continue. Commandment seven serves as a reminder to Fear the Lord, emphasizing that fearing God prevents us from doing evil and enables us to do good. Commandment nine addresses double-mindedness, calling it the daughter of the devil, while commandment ten the Shepherd tells Hermas not to despair when God doesn't answer prayers or when life doesn't align with personal expectations. The final two commandments focus on discernment: discerning prophecy and our desires and that sums up the commandments from the Shepherd to Hermas.

The Shepherd is now on the scene and gives Hermas twelve commandments to live by, progressing from basic principles to the need for deeper spiritual discernment. The first six commands begin with a simple yet perhaps the most challenging one: believe in God. They then progress to abstaining from evil and practicing generosity, culminating in a genuine love for the truth. Commandment four takes a unique perspective on divorce and adultery, while commandment five advises simply to remain patient and avoid anger. Commandment six presents a whimsical depiction of a demon on one shoulder and an angel on the other, with one urging us to do good and the other tempting us toward evil.

The visions of Hermas continue! A tower is being built with different types of stones. Some of the stones fit together so perfectly that they look like one united piece, and other stones are used from the depths of the waters. Then there's a vision of a great beast known as tribulation that scares Hermas until he remembers what God told him after he had prayed and fasted. These are the visions of Hermas that parallel so much of the Bible and show us where theology was headed for the Christians in Rome.

In the Epistle of Enoch, Enoch gathers Methuselah and all his sons for a final word with them. There, Enoch shares with them the Apocalypse of Weeks, a summary of human history from creation to the Last Judgment condensed into a tale of 10 weeks. Enoch also warns them not to be misled by the practices of the world they live in, as the path of the unrighteous leads to many woes, punishment, and death. In contrast, he gives them exhortations to fear not, be hopeful, and take courage, assuring them that a Savior is coming for those who follow the path of righteousness.

The Astronomical Enoch, possibly the earliest among the Enoch writings, explores the celestial movements of the sun, moon, and stars as they traverse the heavens throughout the changing seasons. It unveils a unique 364-day solar calendar, divided into four quarters with three 30-day months and a day interposed between each quarter. This fascinating account portrays the sun, moon, and stars as dutifully following Divine laws. Enoch imparts this revelation to his son Methuselah, highlighting the stark contrast between the unwavering obedience of nature to God's commands and the prevailing disobedience of humanity at that time.

Chapters 37-71 of 1st Enoch are known as the Book of the Similitudes or Parables. This section consists of three parables or visions received by Enoch, introducing new material through heavenly visions that primarily focus on the concept of final judgment. The Book of the Similitudes holds particular significance in New Testament scholarship as it describes the Son of Man in connection with the final judgment. One of the most controversial aspects is the usage of the term 'Son of Man,' drawing inspiration from the books of Daniel and Ezekiel to develop the idea of the coming Messiah as the Son of Man. This concept would greatly influence the New Testament authors' understanding of Jesus, particularly evident in John's Gospel.

It also delves into Gehenna, a real biblical location used as imagery for the appearance of the underworld. Additionally, the book provides a description of the spiritual geography of the entire creation, which was accepted by the New Testament writers and the Church Fathers in their understanding of events within the invisible creation—the spiritual world. If the first six chapters were about what we do, then the remaining chapters 7-16 can be categorized as how we worship God. This amazing ancient Christian writing teaches us that baptism is an important part of the covenant agreement between the believer and God, and that it is more than just a symbolic act. It provides instructions on how to make prayer a regular part of our day and life and shows us how communion should be the focal point of any worship service dedicated to God. It warns of false teachers that are everywhere and advises us, as Jesus did, to be ready for his second coming. This ancient Christian text was lost, but now discovered again, and it shows us that maybe as Christians, we need to take a closer look at our roots and what the early church was doing to help us make an impact in the world we live in today. Written in the first century, the Didache contains essential Christian principles for living a godly life, undergoing conversion, and participating in church rituals. It serves as a "church manual" or "handbook" of Christian ethics and church order, outlining fundamental teachings and practices that are as relevant today as they were then.

Join us as we uncover the secrets of the Didache and explore what the early Christians believed new believers needed to learn as they joined the church. You won't want to miss this exciting episode as we delve deeper into the timeless wisdom of this invaluable resource.

By the 8th century there were over 70 healthy churches in the city of Crete. Yes that’s the same Crete that was known to be filled with brutes, gluttons, and liars. How did that happen? Maybe it was that short three paged letter Paul wrote to Titus that really stuck to the people there and made a lasting difference in their community. A letter to remind the faithful Pastor, Titus, that to build the church properly the foundation must be sound doctrine.

It was Crete, and we all know who the people of Crete are - nothing but brutes, gluttons, and liars. This is where Paul placed Titus to clean up the church and establish it. So, what did Titus need to do? He needed to look for people with great character, and he knew it would be difficult. But he also knew that character had to come before competency, and godliness before giftedness. If they were to grow the church of Crete for God's Kingdom, it all started with finding people with the right life, because the right life always leads to the right actions.

How do you find hope in the middle of disaster? How can you see any light of hope when your home is being invaded, your city is burning, your temple is being destroyed, and your family or friends are either being killed in front of you or carried off to a foreign land? This is what Jeremiah experienced while writing Lamentations, and in the midst of this book about pain and devastation, he wrote, 'Yet I still have hope in God,' as a reminder that there is always hope in God.

For 900 years, the people were warned and told that if they didn't follow God's laws, judgment would come. They were meant to be God's representatives to the nations, showing them who God is through their conduct. However, instead of spreading God's message, they adopted the habits and characteristics of the nations around them. As a result, God's judgment came in the form of destruction by Babylon, leaving the people to wonder, "How did I get here?"

It was just one book that was found after years of being lost. It laid out clearly that what the King of Judah and the people had been doing was wrong, so King Josiah made a change. He tore down all the things that were used to worship other gods and had the people celebrate the Passover again. You could say it was a time of spiritual revival for Judah, but the Prophet Zephaniah saw through this and saw through the hearts of the people. He knew that the changes were only surface level and that the people were still guilty of making costly mistakes in their relationship with God.

The poem Dies irae (“Day of Wrath”), often attributed to Thomas of Celano (c. AD 1185–1260), which was chanted for many centuries in the Western church as part of requiem masses, was likely the most prominent representation of a part of Zephaniah (1:14–18).

THAT day of wrath, that dreadful day,

shall heaven and earth in ashes lay,

as David and the Sybil say.

What horror must invade the mind

when the approaching Judge shall find

and sift the deeds of all mankind!

The mighty trumpet's wondrous tone

shall rend each tomb's sepulchral stone

and summon all before the Throne.

Now death and nature with surprise

behold the trembling sinners rise

to meet the Judge's searching eyes.

Then shall with universal dread

the Book of Consciences be read

to judge the lives of all the dead.

For now before the Judge severe

all hidden things must plain appear;

no crime can pass unpunished here.

O what shall I, so guilty plead?

and who for me will intercede?

when even Saints shall comfort need?

O King of dreadful majesty!

grace and mercy You grant free;

as Fount of Kindness, save me!

Recall, dear Jesus, for my sake

you did our suffering nature take

then do not now my soul forsake!

In weariness You sought for me,

and suffering upon the tree!

let not in vain such labor be.

O Judge of justice, hear, I pray,

for pity take my sins away

before the dreadful reckoning day.

Your gracious face, O Lord, I seek;

deep shame and grief are on my cheek;

in sighs and tears my sorrows speak.

You Who did Mary's guilt unbind,

and mercy for the robber find,

have filled with hope my anxious mind.

How worthless are my prayers I know,

yet, Lord forbid that I should go

into the fires of endless woe.

Divorced from the accursed band,

o make me with Your sheep to stand,

as child of grace, at Your right Hand.

When the doomed can no more flee

from the fires of misery

with the chosen call me.

Before You, humbled, Lord, I lie,

my heart like ashes, crushed and dry,

assist me when I die.

Full of tears and full of dread

is that day that wakes the dead,

calling all, with solemn blast

to be judged for all their past.

Lord, have mercy, Jesus blest,

grant them all Your Light and Rest. Amen.

For Gaius it wasn’t just a title, it was his testimony and it showed through his hospitality. When other believers came to town, Gaius wouldn’t hesitate to open his home to them and when they left, he would provide the provisions they needed for the next journey. For Diotrephes it was all about the title. He was insecure, critical, arrogant, and intimidated others. He didn’t care how he was perceived by others, all he cared about was the title. And so, the letter of Third John presents a simple question to us all is it all about the title or is it about the testimony.

He had so much to write to them and some of what was in his heart would have to wait until he was face to face with them, but one very important message couldn’t wait. One message needs to be addressed immediately and so John picks up pen and paper and writes to the church (the chosen lady) to LOVE one another. John, much older, understands the importance of loving one another and what it means to truly love. For John love was more than an emotion or feeling it was walking in obedience to God’s commands and if the church (the chosen lady) could do that then loving each other would not be a problem. He wants the church to know that if you say you love God, you will obey God and if you obey God, you will love others.

The First person to take Amos’ socio-ethical message seriously was the Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola. During Lent in Florence, Italy, in 1496, Savonarola preached a series of hard-hitting sermons on Amos and Zechariah against what he felt were the political and religious sins of that city-state. These sermons led to his imprisonment and subsequent execution in 1498. More recent Martin Luther King Jr. in his amazing, world changing “I have a dream” speech quotes Amos 5:24 “Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream.” This was the message that Amos was delivering to the people of Israel as well. He wanted them to know that their improper worship had led to improper treatment of others. He wanted to remind them that justice should roll out of them and that would cause righteousness to flow out to the other nations.

The nations around them were about to be judged for their wicked actions and the children of Israel were ready to celebrate this “Day of the LORD” that was about to come on them, but the prophet Amos would let them know that the same judgement that was coming on the surrounding nations was about to hit both Israel and Judah. Israel and Judah were God’s chosen people and with being God’s chosen people they had the responsibility to be the light to the nations around them. Unfortunately, the nations around them had corrupted them. They were no longer worshipping God the way He had commanded them. They worshipped Him the way they wanted to. Make no mistake about it they were still seeking worship however they just weren’t seeking God in their worship.

These aren’t stories that he made up or fables to tell others, no, this was Peter’s life that he lived and experienced. As he writes what could have been his last words to the church, he wants to leave them with one final message “This is how you walk with God”. See false teachers started to creep into the church and were pulling people away with their lies about who Jesus was and if He would return. Peter warns the church that they and all who follow them will have their judgement on The Day of the Lord. For those that don’t follow them he encourages them to stay faithful, be on their guard and grow in the grace and knowledge of who Jesus is.

The King, the people even the cows put sackcloth on in fear of God’s judgment on them. They thought maybe if we give up our evil ways then God would show compassion on us and not destroy our great city. But Nineveh, the great city, would have a completely different attitude fifty to a hundred years later and Nahum the prophet would let them know that God is powerful, that His judgment on them was coming soon, that He will bless those who are faithful, but Nineveh hasn’t been faithful, that their destruction was His justice and how what they did with His grace wasn’t good. They slipped into the church secretly, these “certain men” who Jude would call dreamers and ungodly and were spreading false teaching in the church. No, he wouldn’t call them out by name, but he would call them out by their actions using 5 Old Testament examples and 2 other ancient writing. See who they were wasn’t as important as what they were doing. So, Jude would remind the church to build themselves up in faith, prayer in the Spirit and to keep themselves in God’s love so they could know the difference between what was real and what was counterfeit. Make no mistake about it, they hated their neighbors that were north of them, so much so, that when Babylon came to attack the Israelites the Edomites sat high in their homes in the mountains and gloating and watching it all happen. For some of them, their disdain for the Israelites was so deep rooted that they joined in on the attack, taking from the Israelites, and even making sure those who could escape couldn’t.
