Homily and Oblate Podcast by Chicago-Benedictines

The Monastery of the Holy Cross is a Roman Catholic, contemplative Benedictine Monastery of the Subiaco Cassinese Congregation. Continuing a centuries-old tradition, we live according to the Rule of St. Benedict, seeking God through a life of prayer, silence, work and hospitality. The Monastery was established in the Chicago Archdiocese at the invitation of Cardinal Bernardin in 1991. In 2011, the Monastery was elevated to the status of independent priory by Abbot President Bruno Marin, OSB. To learn more, visit our website at http://chicagomonk.org/

Our first CD “Sacred Music for the Triumph of the Holy Cross,” is available from Amazon.com.

At no cost to you, AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support the monastery every time you shop. You’ll find the exact same prices as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to your selected preferred charitable organization. "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another(John 13: 34-35)." Are we recognizable as Christians? If our love for one another depends upon our knowledge of the Father's love for us, perhaps one of the greatest acts of love we can do for one another is to be serious about prayer.

St. Luke sets the presentation of Christ squarely within the context of the Mosaic Law and Covenant, foreshadowing the new and eternal Covenant to be sealed in the blood of Him Who is offered and dedicated to the Father. At this encounter with the holy family, the righteous Simeon receives the infant Jesus into his arms, as will the Virgin Mary on Golgatha at the foot of the life-giving cross. May we too embrace Our Lord Jesus with minds and hearts made pure, as we prepare ourselves to be received by Him.

Deo Gratias! Welcome to Oblate's Podcast, brought to you by our very own Fr. Prior Peter Funk OSB, and Dom Brendan Creedan OSB. Every 2nd Sunday of the month we discuss different aspects of the Benedictine Conversatio (way of life) and its practical implications for persons living outside the monastery - those who have chosen to make a formal offering of themselves to the monastery, to promote the community's interests, and live the life of the Gospel as it is reflected in the rule of St. Benedict, are called Oblates. As Benedictines, our emphasis is on the Liturgy - its power to convert hearts and minds to Jesus Christ. Our monthly meetings cover a wide range of topics, including the Church Fathers, Gregorian chant, the Psalms, and monastic history. Please check back in the future for available Podcasts. We hope this small tool will help anyone who is interested in learning more about our way of life, and our Oblate Program, and may God richly bless you! + PAX +

Luke's Gospel may sound like the story of what happened way back then, but he in fact intends to place us in the midst of the narrative - that we are the witnesses to the mystery of the incarnation, because Christ is present and active in the Church now, just as He was then. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John's writings are called, in Greek, the evangelium (Literally "good message" or "good news"). News is about something that happens, the result of which the world is somehow different than it was before...Luke wants us to know that when God lived on earth in the Person of Jesus of Nazareth, the world became a different place, with an entirely different future...

The Liturgy is a wedding feast, a mystical union of the divine and human natures (already accomplished in the Person of Jesus Christ), and also our own divinization, in which the ineffable Life of the Blessed Trinity is freely given to us.

The mystery of Christ's incarnation and birth cannot be separated from the mystery of His death and resurrection - they're all of a single piece. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John may begin the story at different points and tell it from different perspectives, but they all end up at the same place: a cross on Good Friday, and an empty tomb on Easter Sunday morning. Christmas is our true vocation revealed to us; whether we look at the Child in the manger, or the Man hanging on the cross, we see not only Who God is, but we see who we are meant to be.

The One whom the Virgin Mary conceived in Her womb by the Holy Spirit, Who truly became Her Son according to the flesh - Jesus Christ - was truly the Father's Only-Begotten Son, eternal and coequal with Him from the beginning, the second Person of the All-Holy and Life-Creating Trinity; hence, the church confesses that Mary is truly Mother of God (Theotokos [God-Bearer]).

Christ did not only come to save those who believe, but also those who are indifferent, and for whom Christmas is a "holiday," and not a "holy day." And yet, this is the real reason for catholic joy at Christmas because God addresses the world, not as it might be, or should be, or could be - but as it is. And He chose to do it in the most daring and unexpected of all possible ways; not by descending from the heavens on a cloud, accompanied with flashes of lightening and trumpet blasts as He did on Sinai; though, indeed, this would leave little room for those who doubt His existence. Instead, God snuck below the radar as it were, being born as a helpless infant in an obscure village, just when everyone was distracted by Caesar's census... Though we may be indifferent to the awesome mystery taking place around us, like the majority of the world that fateful night, we can always look at the child in the manger and ponder within our hearts: certainly only the most hardened sinner can resist a baby.

View Details

God's love and humility is such that He willed to share in the limitation of the human body that we have through the Incarnation of the Eternal Word of the Father, in order to invite us through this act of Kenosis (self-emptying) to share in His transcendence and partake in everything that belongs to Him. This is an invitation to "give birth" to Christ in our souls, to incarnate Christ in our lives...this is the good news of the Gospel, and the message of Christmas.

View Details

Our faith tells us that God is not content just to fix the world, and indeed, He has already accomplished that; but, He did something far more radical - He saved the world by entering into it as one of His own creatures; and this is why the angels sang "gloria in excelsis Deo," because when God's glory finally appeared, it looked like a helpless infant. No one is a baby forever (except in rare cases), so when this infant grows up, God's glory will look like something very different: a man hanging on a cross.

As God has made a gift of new life to Mary, a life no longer contaminated by vice, this new life is actually something in which we share by our common humanity with the Mother of God, and through our baptism...her spiritual triumph is ours as well, so there is no need for envy at her exalted state, nor is there reason to imagine fretfully that her sinlessness separates her from us and our experience. In fact, her preservation from sin could be a spur to us to imitate her by regular reflection on our baptism, our own immaculate re-birth. St. Paul says God chose 'each' of us to be holy and without blemish, chosen before the foundation of the world...our very creation was for this purpose: to live a holy and innocent life in praise of God, in joy and peace.

View Details

If we wish to prepare a way for the Lord, we must be willing to enter into the desert, one that is as much exterior as it is interior. We must come to an acknowledgement of our creature-ness, a real bareness and emptiness (perhaps through fasting or practicing greater material silence)...in this emptiness we can stand before God and truly be ourselves and listen to Him. We have to let God be God rather than a pious afterthought trotted out to justify my own preferences. God's grace is always there to help us, if only we give Him a little bit of room, a little bit of emptiness, and a small invitation to straighten the crooked ways of our hearts.

View Details

Our God has willed to prepare us for the coming of His divine Son over the centuries, most especially through the prophets...come let us adore Him!

All authority, whether in heaven or on earth, comes from, is inspired by, and depends on God - in the end, Christ's true kingship is only fully manifested during His crucifixion. This is why Pilate uses the title and the rites of coronation to mock Him; the liturgy of His death is a parody of an imperial court liturgy. He is dressed in purple robes, presented with a crown (of thorns, of course), is given a reed as a mock scepter, is presented to the crowd as a king, and finally - is enthroned on a cross...Christians are, really, resident aliens on this planet, and our only sovereign Lord is Jesus Christ. That is why we pray at every Eucharist, "Thy kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven."

View Details

Holiness isn't just being a better, nicer version of myself - it means to become increasingly aware of the kingdom of God in-breaking now, and to have an increasing desire for it, to live for this reality with genuine eagerness of faith, to the point of entering into this reality; to usher in the reign of God's kingdom on earth, "so that God may become all in all." Behold! Christ stands at the gates...are we prepared to go out and meet Him?

View Details

The Requiem Mass reminds us that our prayers for the dead really are efficacious - we can assist one another in preparing for the final judgement. At communion we sing "may perpetual light shine upon them, with your saints, O Lord, for you are holy." Yesterday we celebrated All Saints, and today we turn in hope to God, who sanctified those saints, and ask Him to do the same for all the faithful departed - whoever they may be...whether husbands and wives, children, mothers and fathers, friends - however weakly and imperfectly entrusted themselves to God's mercy. Just as faith really makes no sense without the possibility of doubt, so hope makes no sense without the possibility for fear; to acknowledge the seriousness of life and the fearful seriousness of death is to give an occasion to recall, in hope, the death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Husbands and wives, monks and nuns, common laborers and professionals, adults and children, laity and clergy - there's something for everyone in this long list of proven holiness; the point is, they found their holiness by working with what they were given. While we are formed by who or what we admire, we should resist the temptation to turn them into plaster statues and stick them on a shelf, which makes them convenient to forget - they were, after all, ordinary men and women who lived extraordinary faith. This doesn't mean that every saint is a great success story; many of them were worldly failures. Their path to holiness took them on the same path to the cross, but each of them had to respond to God's grace in their own unique way, like you and I. They were not canonized by the Church for their sake, but for ours - we honor them in order to awaken within us a yearning to be with them. In the end, the Solemnity of All Saints helps us understand at least this: that Heaven is populated...with people who look a lot like you and I.

Here is our choice: to use our insider status to make demands on God that fit our own self-aggrandizing designs - or perhaps, to admit routinely our need for sight - our blindness in various ways - and to cry out to the Lord for mercy. If then, we must listen to His call, and in responding to His will in faith, receive true understanding and 'in-sight' into the mystery of God.

Am I free to follow Christ, even to the cross, if I'm worried about many 'things,'? The cross in the end is not a risk that any of us can minimize - it is just the cost of following Christ; but, it is also the doorway to eternal life and union with God, to the satisfaction of all our desires. While we can't minimize the suffering of the cross, we can learn to embrace it, to follow Christ to the cross..."Lord what must I do to inherit eternal life?" While we listen to His answer, and check our hearts to hear His response, let us always be aware that He looks at each of us with the fullness of eternal love.

In the Gospel, Jesus confronts one of the great mysteries of the universe - a mystery which science and history do not concern themselves with, something not observed by hubble telescope in the inaccessible reaches of outer space. No, it is something located in the realm of inner space; it's symbol is the human heart, though it has nothing to do with the organ that pumps blood. It lies at the root of human thinking and acting and so it is really located in the will; it is a habit of willfully choosing myself over others, which Christ calls 'hardness of heart.' Where people refuse, are not just incapable of, but refuse to give themselves to others on any level whatsoever - married or divorced, celibate or single, this is where the Gospel comes home to roost in you and I.

St. James offers us this day a kind of wake-up call or a vivid reminder of how we are to live; this is a passing world with gifts and things, visible and invisible, spiritual and material - we must therefore put these in the service of others and above all for the love of God. Let us heed the words of St. James as we attempt to put into practice a new and transformed way of thinking and acting for the love of God and in the love of God.

The Gospels do not use the Greek word 'thauma' [miracle] to describe what Jesus does - what does appear is the word 'semeion,' or sign. So what Jesus is doing in today's Gospel (Mk. 7:31-37)is more than healing a deaf and mute man; this surely happened, but this is the outer appearance meant to teach us an inner spiritual reality. To hear this miracle aright requires that we have the ears of our spirit opened, and grasp the spiritual significance... Let us ask, "O Lord, open my lips - and my ears!" And may we learn anew how to hear His voice calling to us each day.

Natural contemplation requires us to use our reason and reflection on creation to learn how to use God's creatures for His glory. At the liturgy, when we bring before the altar the gifts of bread and wine - these signs of human culture - they are offered by us, representatives of the world, and indeed the whole creation, and God takes these and responds by transforming them into the Body and Blood of His Son. This transaction is a sign of our common priesthood. We are the high priests of creation - all of us together, baptized Christians, make the world more rational, more hospitable, more gracious, more beautiful...bit by bit, through our cooperation with God's grace, the cosmos is sanctified.

"Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst... For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me; and this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up at the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day'" (John 6:35-40).

How do we know whether we love? Only through fidelity in suffering do we know whether we love. Our brother will not attest to having achieved this love yet; this is going to be the project of a lifetime. The expectation that surrounds an event like today, this rite of passage, is that it marks an arrival. But according to the liturgy this would be a mistake.

Jesus Christ is the pre-existent Word of God and He freely chose to be sent from the right hand of the Father into the world to seek us out, out of love for us. When Jesus orders the disciples in today's Gospel to gather up the fragments so that nothing is wasted (the greek word for 'wasted' in this context is ἀπώλεια, which more literally means 'lost'), He is pointing to a deep mystery: the twelve baskets that are gathered together are signifying the scattered twelve tribes of Israel - Jesus is the new Moses, the Prophet coming into the world to bring back together Israel that sin had broken apart. He is giving the full meaning of the Torah, of the Law, teaching what God's intentions are for all of us - gathering us all together so that none of us would be lost.

God chose us before the foundation of the world; that is to say that God's creation and history itself are for us - God had us in mind when he separated the waters and set the whole course of history in motion, but He had a particular vision of us in mind. There is a goal: for us to be united together in the body of His son, and so the incarnation of the Son of God is the goal of all creation - and our incorporation into this body is the goal of our lives.

Peter and Paul were executed, like their master, as enemies of the state, and so they merited following Him to glory; and our lives as members of the church will necessarily follow a similar conformity to this pattern of suffering that we may pass-over and ascend with Christ our head, to the glory of the Kingdom of God. As we celebrate the Eucharist, as Christ comes to us upon the altar, we are in communion with the whole of the church guaranteed by the witness of the Apostles. Let us remember that He who prayed for Peter that his faith would not fail, and who made sure that the grace in Paul’s life would not fail – will He not certainly pray for our leaders in the church today that their faith may endure?

The God of life is walking among us! He is bringing healing and strength to us today; and if the mere touching of His garment could affect such a powerful cure - what can we expect, we who receive Christ's body into our own, through the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist? "Only say the word, Lord, and my soul shall be healed."

"Be still and know that I am God; supreme among the nations, supreme over all the earth" (Psalm 46:10) - what must the disciples have thought when, as told in Mark's Gospel, they saw Jesus rebuke the wind and the sea - and these obeyed? "Master, do you not care that we are perishing? (Mk. 4:38)" The profound question the disciples put forth as they were being tossed about in the boat is one which we must all confront in life - do we really trust in the Lord and have faith that He does in fact care about us? That He will indeed come to our rescue?

"If a church building is itself an icon, then the same language must surely be used to describe it. A church must be read, because like an icon, it is an image of the Gospel in mortar stone and glass... On a google map we might be located at the corner of 31st and Aberdeen - but on the theological map, we're located somewhere in the intersection between now and eternity...once we realize this then we can begin to read the entire structure of this building as pointing to that reality..."

And the catholic faith is this: That we worship one God in "Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; Neither confounding the Persons; nor dividing the Essence. For there is one Person of the Father; another of the Son; and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one; the Glory equal, the Majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is; such is the Son; and such is the Holy Ghost..." The apostles are clearly at a loss how to proceed after Christ's resurrection and ascension..."what do we do now? The Ascension is often neglected in modern theology and preaching, while as a liturgical feast day it is often forgotten or trivialized. But in his Ascension to the Father, Christ does not disappear from the world; on the contrary, he begins to appear. Because His presence is hidden it can only be discerned by those who are sensitized to it by the Holy Spirit, through the sacraments and the Church. It is especially in the liturgy that we encounter the Christ who comes to save.
