In the dynamic landscape of global tourism, the strength of a destination's brand is a critical force that can shape travel behaviours, influence decisions, and ultimately drive arrivals.
South Africa has made a concerted effort to bolster brand perception in a bid to yield a growing brand to attract visitors from across the globe.
South African Tourism has invested in building the brand; and has been on a journey of brand transformation over the years, steadily enhancing its appeal on the global stage.
Awareness levels for SA as a travel destination increased from 68% to 71% from 2022 to 2023, while positivity remained stable at 40%. In the USA, awareness is at 81% and positivity at 56%. Kenya has an awareness level of 51% and positivity at 24%. South Africa's global closure ratio remained strong, with a rate of 1 in 1.34 in 2023, indicating a high conversion rate of travellers who seek information about South Africa and then visit.
The perceptions of key experiences linked to South Africa as a travel destination remains strong. Attributes such as 'Nature and Wildlife' and 'Adventurous' have witnessed marked improvements, with scores rising to 6.03 / 7 in 2023 (from 5.99 / 7 in 2022) and 5.94 / 7 in 2023 (from 5.92 / 7 in 2022) respectively. Moreover, the enduring appeal of 'Beautiful scenery', 'Experience a different culture', and 'Going on a safari' underscores South Africa's strong appeal as a leisure destination.

There is an amazing story behind Dogs 4 Wildlife 'Dan'. Around a year ago Dogs 4 Wildlife was contacted by a wonderful women named Caroline Bridle. Caroline saw a social media post on our important work and felt compelled to reach out to us. In 2013, Caroline's son Daniel Bridle, was diagnosed with terminal cancer, just a year later in 2014 Daniel lost his battle and sadly passed away.
Being a huge animal lover, Caroline could not think of a better way to honour her sons memory than having a specialised dog, trained to protect endangered wildlife. When she told us of Daniel's inspiring story, naming one of our dogs in memory of her son was a fitting tribute to the dedication of Caroline and her family in Daniel's memory and future legacy.

This is a podcast as the information about the Park is wide and varied. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the birds we spotted and the banks were filled with so many species of both birds and animals. We saw elephant, hippo, warthog, crocodile and of course a proliferation of birds that Ken Lovell didn't know where to point his camera.
The animals came down to soak in the water as the tropical heat here means that the midday sun beats down together with the humidity. But the cruise boat had enough shaded seats for us to enjoy rhe cruise. We drifted past rhe fishermen who were getting their nets ready and clean for the afternoons fishing. Talapia fish is the most commonly found in the area.

I had the privilage of meeting Lisa and her mom, Sandra during a recent visit to the World Travel Market and again when I was able to stay over on the way back from a business trip to Cape Town. I caught up with Kian on his flat bottomed boat on the Isimangaliso shortly after one of his tours. This quaint and beautiful guest house, nestling in the heart of Cullinan, is the brain child of Lisa Marie and her husband, Jacques Pistorius. They decided to start the guest house as part of a project to afford the sprawling property and give their children a great place to grow up. It has recently been refurbished and hotel GM, Daniel Tharratt, took us through some of the upgrades. 6 new rooms with self catering options for long stays, a supper club (which hosted Elvis and Friends with Shaky Russell), and slowly upgrading all the floors to be more modern and have a more modern feel. Hobby historians, Robert Forsythe and Andre Wederpohl, traced the soldiers journey and battles from the West of Johannesburg close to the Cradle of Humankind, through to Paul Krugers' Farm in Boekenhoutfontein, where Robert purchased the farm and created Kedar Lodge.
I caught up with them at Misty Hills, Conference Hotel and Spa, and had a live history lesson, which we carried through many of the activities in the area. Including Bill Harrops Balloons where we flew over the battlefields, and at the Bothongo Rhino and Lion Park in the Wonder Caves where the Italians worked during the war.

Bill Harrop has been on the South African tourism landscape for many years and is an iconic representation of a family business built on a solid foundation with great vision. I took the opportunity of interviewing Bill in one of his balloons, high up in the Magaliesburg sky during our 36 hours in the Cradle. I was fortunate to be able to include his wife, Mary, during breakfast.
