Rare Exports is a Finish dark fantasy horror film, written and directed by Jalmari Helander. The film is based on the 2003 short film Rare Exports Inc. and its 2005 sequel Rare Exports: The Official Safety Instructions by Jalmari Helander and Juuso Helander, both of which involve a company that traps wild Santa Clauses and trains and exports them to locations around the world.
A young boy named Pietari and his friend Juuso think a secret mountain drilling project near their home in northern Finland has uncovered the tomb of Santa Claus. When Pietari's father captures a feral old man in his wolf trap, the man may hold the key to why reindeer are being slaughtered and children are disappearing.

Author R. H. Grimly joins me to talk about his upcoming series, Frightland. Frightland is a new scary middle-grade series inspired by R. L. Stine's Goosebumps series. R. H. Grimly grew up on series such as Goosebumps, Wait Till Helen Comes, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Head over to Kickstarter to help back this project, and let them know the Nerds sent you.
The current campaign is for the first four books but is planned as a twelve-book anthology. Each book will be a self-contained story but exist in a shared universe. After the first twelve books, R. H. Grimly plans to create a 13th novel that will bring the whole universe together. The series will feature covers by artists from Flavio Greco Paglia and Tim Jacobus. The nerds review 2 episodes from Season one of Goosebumps. Goosebumps is a Canadian-American horror anthology tv series based on the book series of the same name.
"The Haunted Mask "is the 11th book in the original Goosebumps series written by R.L. Stine. It was published in September of 1993 by Scholastic. It aired on October 27, 1995, on Fox.
Carly Beth falls for every prank played on her. So on Halloween, she buys the scariest mask possible at an off-limits room at an old store. However, little does she know that the mask has a mind of its own.
"The Cuckoo Clock of Doom" is the 28th book in the original Goosebumps series. It was published in February of 1995 and aired on November 3, 1995.
In order to get his prank-loving little sister Tara in trouble, Michael turns the cuckoo's head in his father's cuckoo clock backwards, but soon regrets it when he is continuously transported back in time, with little chance of getting back to the present.

Casey Bowker & Ruben Romero join me today to review Scream & Scream 2.
The sleepy little town of Woodsboro just woke up screaming. There's a killer in their midst who's seen a few too many scary movies. Suddenly nobody is safe, as the psychopath stalks victims, taunts them with trivia questions, then rips them to bloody shreds. It could be anybody...
Scream was written by Kevin Williamson, directed by Wes Craven, and distributed by Dimension Films. It stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courtney Cox, Mathew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich, and Drew Barrymore. Scream was credited with revitalizing the horror genre of the 1990s, after the influx of direct-to-video horror titles and sequels. It combined the slasher genre with comedy, satire, and a whodunit mystery.
Sydney, Randy, Dewey, and Gale survived the events of the first "Scream," but their nightmare isn't over. When two college students are murdered at a sneak preview of "Stab," a movie based on the events from the first film, it's clear a copycat killer is on the loose. Sydney and her fellow survivors have to find out who is behind this new murder spree before they all end up dead.
Scream 2 was released a year later, with Williamson and Craven coming back as, writer and director. The sequel was developed while writing the initial script for Scream. It was considered a financial success on par with Scream, which helped spawn further sequels.

"Eva Khatchadourian is a travel writer/publisher who gives up her beloved freedom and bohemian lifestyle to have a child with her husband, Franklin. Pregnancy does not seem to agree with Eva, but what's worse, when she does give birth to a baby boy named Kevin, she can't seem to bond with him. When Kevin grows from a fussy, demanding toddler into a sociopathic teen, Eva is forced to deal with the aftermath of her son's horrific act."

Behind the Mask is a 2006 American Mockumentary black comedy slasher film directed by Scott Glosserman. Nathan Baesel stars as the titular Leslie Vernon. The movie is an homage to classic slasher films. Robert Englund, Zelda Rubenstein, and Kane Hodder cameo in the film.
Initially released at the 2006 South by Southwest film festival, it received a limited release on March 16, 2017. It has received mostly favorable reviews, currently sitting at a 76% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Eric Hawkins has been drawing comics since he was a kid and released issue #1 of The Zombieful World of Oz in November of 2019.
"Its been ten years after Dorthy’s fantastic adventure to the world of OZ. She’s 24 years old and is being released from a mental hospital. The years following the cyclone, people could not comprehend her tales of adventures and wonder in the Land of Oz. ears of therapy and rehabilitation followed. Now she is being released and her will and new resolve are going to be tested like never before.
In the years after Dorothy’s arrival in Oz, a mysterious plague has swept the land. The Winkie Country was the first to fall. Michael Tanner joins us this week to review 1988’s They Live. John Carpenter wrote and directed this cult classic. They Live is based on Ray Nelson’s short story, “Eight O’Clock in the Morning”. It stars Roddy Piper, Keith David, and Meg Foster.
The movie debuted #1 in North America in its first week, but it received mostly negative reviews. The film was heavily criticized for its social commentary, but later enjoyed a cult following. This seems to be a pattern with early John Carpenter films. Most notably, the movie has entered pop-culture and has influenced street art.

This week the Nerds discuss the 1982’s The Thing. Shea (All Crime, No Cattle) joins us this week as we talk about why The Thing is among our favorite horror movies.
John Carpenter directed the movie and it stars Kurt Russell & Keith David. It is based on 1938 Sci-fi novella, “Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell, Jr. Critics gave it mostly negative reviews at the time of its release, but more recently gained cult status.
"In remote Antarctica, a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, it brutally attacks both human beings and canines in the camp and they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims. A resourceful helicopter pilot and the camp doctor lead the camp crew in a battle against the vicious creature."

John Horsley (Spoiler Country) joined the Nerds to discuss the UK/Irish film Grabbers. Kevin Lehane wrote the script, and Jon Wright directed it.
Grabbers premiered in 2012 at the Sundance Film Festival to mostly positive reviews. The film was announced as one of the “Best of the Fest” at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. At the 2014 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, it received two nominations for “Best Script” and “Best creature”. Unfortunately, it only received a limited theatrical release.

Lanie, host of True Crime Fan Club, joins us to talk about 2001’s The Others. The Others is written and directed by Alejandro Amenábar and stars Nicole Kidman.
The Others was released on August 2, 2001, in the United States and on September 7, 2001, in Spain. It was considered a success, making $209.9 million on a budget of $17 million.
The film won seven Goya Awards, Spain’s main national film awards. It was the first English language film to win awards for Best Film. It was won three Saturn Awards for Best Director, Best Writing, and Best Supporting Actress.

Rabid was written and directed by David Cronenberg and was filmed in Canada. Cronenberg originally wanted Sissy Spacek for the lead role but was vetoed by the studio. As a result, Marylin Chambers was cast in the lead role. Marilyn Chambers was considered, as she was looking to break into mainstream roles.

The nerds discuss this Halloween cult classic. Its been a favorite of ours since it first came out, and it was about time we brought it into the crypt. Released in 1991, Ernest Scared Stupid is the fifth movie to feature Ernest P. Worrell.
"Ernest P. Worrell is working as a garbage collector in a small Missouri town. He accidentally unleashes the devious troll Trantor, a slimy creature confined under a tree for 200 years. Ernest then teams up with Old Lady Hackmore to get rid of the beast and bring the victims back to life."

Writer/Director Erik Kristopher Myers joins us to talk about his film “Butterfly Kisses“. Erik Kristopher Myers is a writer and film director from Baltimore, Maryland. This is his second feature film, along with 2012’s “Roulette“.
"Butterfly Kisses follows a filmmaker who discovers a box of videotapes depicting two students’ disturbing film project featuring a local horror legend, The Peeping Tom. As he sets out to prove this story is real and release it as a work of his own, he loses himself and the film crew following him into his project."

Eric Hawkins joined us this week to talk about “The Zombieful World of OZ”. This version of the classic tale is a Victorian-Steampunk-Fantasy-Horror-Zombie Adventure Story. You will return to a familiar landscape, with legendary characters you were never able to forget.

Rob tells us which real-life politician decided to make a presidential run, and in turn, inspired him to create this comic. Last year CBS revealed The Twilight Zone would receive a reboot. Jordan Peele serves as the voice of and the mind behind the series. The first 2 episodes started streaming on April 1, 2019.

- First, we reviewed episode 1 “The Comedian” starring Kumail Nanjiani & Tracy Morgan.
- Samir Wassan is a comedian who fails to make his audience laugh, that is until he meets an enigmatic and legendary comic who offers him some “helpful” tips. As always, be careful what you wish for in the Twilight Zone.
- Then we took a look at episode 2, “Nightmare at 30,000 Feet” starring Adam Scott.
- Justin Sanderson, a famous investigative journalist, who is recovering from a nervous breakdown who is on a flight which turns out to be doomed. This is story is a re-imagining of one of the most famous classic episodes.

We talked with Ambrose Stolliker about his upcoming short story “The Death Chute”. We talked about his inspirations for writing the story, and how he came up with the chilling setting.
"When his mother, Sophia, is diagnosed with dementia, 44-year-old reality television producer Jake Porter leaves Hollywood and returns to his native Vermont. Jake sends his mother to a posh new retirement community in the Green Mountains. It soon becomes clear the rest home houses dark secrets and is haunted by something terrible and strange.
But when he learns that the retirement community was once a tuberculosis sanatorium, Jake is uneasy at the prospect of leaving Sophia on her own. Only the assurances of the community’s chief medical officer, Christine Barrett, convince Jake that his mother will be in good hands. Not long after she’s moved in, however, Sophia has the first of many frightening experiences when she encounters the apparition of a little boy suffering from TB. At first, Jake dismisses her story as a symptom of her dementia, but as time goes on, it becomes clear the rest home houses dark secrets and is haunted by something terrible and strange."

A couple of weeks ago, we released a lost episode of the nerds reviewing several episodes from Tales from the Crypt. We received great feedback about that episode, so we deiced to take a look at 4 more episodes from season 1.
Tales From the Crypt Season 1, aired in the summer of 1989. All six episodes aired in the month of June. Greg and I grew up with these tales of horror, which helped mold our love for horror. This is the first time, David has seen these episodes.

We reviewed three awesomely horror-filled episodes of “Tales from the Crypt” in this last “lost” episode featuring Nick Vee. This was originally recorded way back at the beginning of 2017, which technically would have been our 5th episode.
We decided to pick 3 episodes of Tales from the Crypt to look over for you all. Nick, Chele, and I talk about watching the series as kids when we probably should have been asleep. These episodes were so fun to watch, and you can tell how much we enjoyed them.

Tess Pfeifle, the lead researcher for Astonishing Legends, joined us to talk about Krampus. Before talking about the movie, Tess helps us discuss the Krampus myth from around the world. It was a great pleasure to have Tess visit us in the crypt.
I was late to watching this one, mainly because I didn’t know the tone the movie was going for. I was surprised by the black humor that was in it. Not only was it hilarious, but also a great horror movie.
Our original plan was to review Krampus back in 2017, but we never had the chance to record it. I immediately thought of Tess when we decided it was time to review this movie. We hope she decides to come back and review other horror movies in the future.

Ambrose Stolliker joined us to talk about his new Civil War horror novella, Old Hollow. It was released on February 27, 2018, by Radiant Crown Publishing.

Today we are re-releasing our review of Creepshow. This was our first episode ever! Nick and I decided this was a great way to start our podcast off with. This episode was lost when we transferred our show over , but I was able to get it back up and I present it to you here.
Creepshow was released in 1982 and was directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King. The film consists of five short stories:
- “Father’s Day” Based on an original story written for the movie by Stephen King. While waiting for Aunt Bedelia at a dinner party, the greedy family recalls that she killed her own father seven years ago. Now her un-dead father returns from the grave as a zombie expecting to eat his cake.
- “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill” Based on Stephen King’s short story “Weeds”. Stephen King plays the titular Jordy Verrill.
- “Something to Tide You Over” Stars Leslie Nelson & Ted Danson in a story about a vengeful, murderous psychopath.
- “The Crate” Based on the short story of the same name. A Janitor finds an old wooden crate that contains a small and powerful beast.
- “They’re Creeping Up on You!” A cruel, ruthless businessman whose mysophobia has him living in a hermetically sealed apartment, but finds himself helpless when his apartment becomes overrun by endless hordes of cockroaches.

The Nerds bring you a double review episode today. First we discuss Pinpricks. Jason Pell created this collection of 101 illustrated short-stories. Some times the stories are a full page, and sometimes they're only a couple of sentences. The illustrations and stories go together so well and add give the reader chills.
"The stories range from scary, humorous, and sometimes, maybe too rarely, a little hopeful. My personal favorite was probably the last one. Yes, it was skillfully written and illustrated, but more importantly, it was the last. I thought, with that, I could move on. But...it has not been that easy."

Lili: The Demoness by Luis Torres
The episode continues with our review of "Lili: The Demoness", created by Luis Torres. Luis sent us the working script along with notes. Luis has this project on Kickstarter but is working on finishing up the project. Lili originally started off as a character in the anthology "Whispers in Necropolis #1" back in 2016.

We look at another indie comic that is wrapping up its run on Kickstarter. Steven Peros, creator of "Stoker & Wells", joins us to talk about this unique comic that unites two great horror/sci-fi authors from the past.
Stoker & Wells takes place in 1894 London, where a 20-something H.G. Wells and a 40-something Bram Stoker meet and have a very unexpected 48-hour adventure that leads to the creative inspiration for both writer's first great success - THE TIME MACHINE for Wells and DRACULA for Stoker.

This review of Hulu's 11.22.63 was originally recorded on April 26,2016. This was before Nerds from the Crypt was even a thought. My friend Jake Lionhart was hosting a weekly show called, Saturday Morning Nerds and told me his friend Nick was a fan of the show and listening to my weekly episode reviews.
I invited Nick to join me for the series review and we realized we liked the same type of series and movies. This was where the initial seeds of what would become the Nerds from the Crypt Podcast. This is our origin, our episode 0. The episode was lost when we originally moved podcast host to separate it from my other podcast. However, with the passing of Nick, I wanted to re-upload the lost episodes so we can all hear his voice a little bit more.
Jake Epping (James Franco), a recently divorced English teacher from Maine, is presented with the chance to travel back in time to Dallas, Texas, in 1960 by his longtime friend Al Templeton (Chris Cooper). He is convinced into going and attempts to prevent the assassination of JFK in November 1963. However, he becomes attached to the life he makes in the past and this could be his mission's undoing.

It is with a heavy heart that I need to communicate this to fans of the show. On October 22, 2017, we received the news that our fellow nerd, Nick Vee, had passed away. A couple of his friends decided to get together and give our last loving memories of our brother.
Nerds from the Crypt Nick Vee was a founding member of Nerds from the Crypt. I was a guest on Saturday Morning Nerds, a podcast he was a co-host on with Jake Lionhart. It was on that show, that I invited him to do a review of Hulu’s 11/22/63.
It was during that review, that we decided to make a podcast reviewing all of Stephen King’s adaptations. However, after the first episode (Creepshow) we decided that we wanted to open it up to all types of horror.
Nick became a spiritual brother to all he came in contact with. When we heard of his passing, we immediately worked on getting a memorial recorded for him. Jake, worked on an intro song with audio from our long lost intro episode.
Legacy Nick was always there to make sure the podcast was fun. He was there when I was about to shut down the podcast, and made sure that I didn’t get discouraged.
I will continue to work on the podcast, in hopes that he would be proud of what we started. When we heard of his passing, Jake, Chele, and I asked if there was a way to get something sent out for him for his funeral. She was kind enough to do so. I also asked Kim, to provide us with several pictures of him. You can see those in the gallery below.
