A symphonic story in four movements with prologue.
The story
Following a hard fought battle for the hearts and minds of her people, a Queen is defeated by the dark forces of an evil Duke. She is hounded out of the kingdom, banished and those who supported her are forced to hide their allegiance. Before she leaves she gives her followers a secret word so that they might identify one another without the Duke’s forces discovering them. She flees into the woods.
She spends years wandering in the wilderness as her kingdom falls into decay under the tyrant Duke. Most of her people are killed or captured until only a small group remain, still using the secret word to show their loyalty to the Queen. The kingdom falls into such a poor state that there are uprisings and the Duke is overthrown. The Queen’s loyal community decide to send one of their number, a young boy, to brave the forests, find her and bring her back to save the kingdom.
After many weeks searching the young boy finds her, but she has gone mad with loneliness. She is convinced he is an assassin sent by the Duke. He shouts out the secret word over and over to gain her trust, but it has been so long since she left the kingdom that she does not recognise it. She tries to run from him and in the process falls to her death into a river at the bottom of a ravine. Her body floats back down river into the heart of the kingdom, where her people see their fallen Queen and cry out using her secret word to show their grief and despair.
As they use the word they look at one another, initially in surprise, believing they were he only one who knew the word, but then in hope as they resolve to rebuild her kingdom.
The piece is comprised of a prologue and four movements. It was composed in December 2016 for Simon's friend and collaborator, the playwright John D. Myatt.
