With summer ending and school starting again, we find ourselves asking, “what comes next?” In this episode of footnotes, we discuss the answer to that question, and why it’s so hard to find an answer in the first place. Humans have always had difficulty thinking about the future - we’re actually wired that way! So, how do you hack your brain to overcome decision paralysis and get “future ready?” Listen to hear our thoughts, plus a shoutout to singing loudly, haikus in German, and the lessons we can learn from doomsday preppers. Introducing Footnotes! It’s a little experiment to try and capture what happens in the process of us creating a full-length issue. A lot happens in the month it takes for us to write a full S&S newsletter, and in that time we learn a lot that would normally never make it into your inbox. Footnotes is our way of making sure you can also see all the weird and cool things that get us excited along our process.

The next issue is about hobbies. Now that coronavirus is going to go for a lot longer than any of us anticipated, how have we been finding joy in other activities? Hobbies have had some kind of resurgence with everyone making sourdough bread or running or painting….so for the next issue we’re looking at what hobbies are, what they mean, how they are categorised and how they differ from country to country.

Introducing S&S, a newsletter where we explore how cool data journalism can be. Data journalism is still a relatively new field and through the newsletter, we want to build a community of data storytellers to exchange ideas and showcase great work. Each month, we’ll be bringing you explorations, conversations, and visualisations shaped by data. Plus, original data stories you won’t find published anywhere else.

This newsletter is for data junkies, editors, writers, students interested in data journalism whether established or aspiring and simply, for those who just love to read. We’ll give you access to resources and educational materials as well as chance to connect with the community and share your projects.
