The Old Testament has over 600 laws given to the people of God. Many seem to be really obscure, and we can often be confronted by people who will selectively choose from those and make the challenge that (for example) because we wear polyester/cotton fabrics, or eat shellfish that we are disobeying God by breaking His laws, and therefore are hypocrites whose testimony should be disregarded.
Are they right?
We are in good company. Jesus was also attacked for ‘breaking the law’. This morning we look at one of those occasions where he does so.

One of the biggest barriers to faith is the love of our current life and an unwillingness to leave it behind, yet Jesus calls us to do just that and follow Him. Levi is one such person who actually DID respond to the call. He left his old life to follow Jesus.
And, he threw a party!
This week we look at Mark’s account of the calling of Levi.

One question you will get asked as much as any other over the coming weeks will be “Did you make a New Year's resolution this year?” New Year’s resolutions are all about our desire to make changes in our lives for the better. However, often we can’t sustain the changes we resolve to make. Far too frequently, the resolutions we make don’t last, and many don’t even get out of January!
The practice of making a New Year’s resolution goes back over 3,000 years to the ancient Babylonians. There is no real difference between December 31 and January 1. Nothing magical happens at midnight on December 31, a new day and a New Year simply starts. New Year, nevertheless, is a good time to take stock of where we are at and consider where we might improve our lives in the future.
As we look into 2024, This morning’s message suggests a new type of resolution…

Many people around us will use the expression ‘I hope’ to describe a wish or desire for something to happen in the future.
This kind of hope implies a degree of uncertainty in the outcome. As the world defines it, hope carries with it a sense of unease or even fear that what we hope for will not come to pass.
BUT … This is not Christian hope.
Today we consider the difference between worldly hope and Christian hope.

The word love in English has a multitude of uses. We use the same word to express many different types of love, so we know instinctively that the way one expresses love with a spouse is, and must be, entirely different to the way it is expressed with grandchildren. Love of a particular football team or pop star is a different type of love again.
Yet the same word describes them all.
This week we look at the love which came down at Christmas time and how that impacts the modern world’s declaration that ‘love is love’

If you try looking at people when you walk down the street. I suspect you will notice, like I have, that very rarely will you see people smile, no one appears to be happy any more. Again and again, life kicks us and many people, (even Christians) have quite literally had their joy kicked right out of them.
On the run-up to Christmas, in complete contrast to any other time of the year, there is an increase in the sense that this of all the year should be a time of Joy. This comes out in so many songs and carols. ‘Joy to the World’ being the most obvious example. But what the world and what the Bible means when they talk about Joy are two different things. This week, we consider what the Bible means when it talks about joy and how we can live lives filled with it.

Christmas is perhaps the only time people really focus on Jesus as the prince of peace. The coming of Christ is announced as a message of peace by the angels in Luke 2:14, and Isaiah prophesies Him as the Prince of Peace. Most people nowadays think of peace as being an absence of conflict.
However, our modern understanding of peace falls way short of what the Bible means when it describes Jesus as the Prince of Peace, and what Jesus means when he says he gives us His peace.
This morning in the first of our Advent series, Julian unpacks this concept of peace a little.

Most people will accept that there is evil in the world. Looking back at the injustices and evils in history and having lived through recent years it would be almost impossible to deny its existence. But few people believe in the devil. Today we consider Jesus’ encounter with the devil which is frequently dismissed by the irreligious and the atheist as a hallucination brought on by extreme hunger. But if you don't believe that the devil exists, you cannot resist him. If we are to resist the devil, we have to learn to recognise him, understand his tactics and know how to resist them. Jonah was given a task by God, he ran away and ended up in the belly of the fish. He is vomited out by the fish, and gets a second bite at the cherry, he preaches to a city which comes to its senses and repents before God. If you were in Jonah’s place, what would your reaction be? Praise? Wonder? Celebration? Wouldn’t you worship God in such a moment? Wouldn’t you join with the angels in celebration about His amazing greatness and His awesome mercy? Wouldn’t you rejoice that so many people had escaped the judgement of God?
Not Jonah.
Jonah gets grumpy. He goes outside the city and grumbles at God. “I KNEW you’d do that!” “I wanted you to strike them down in your wrath and you forgave them!”

God had spoken to Jonah, and he’d run away. His fleeing ends with him being thrown overboard and getting swallowed by a fish.
We know this is not the end of Jonah’s story, but Jonah doesn’t. Jonah has no idea that this is all part of God’s plan, he doesn’t know that the fish is the method God uses to get him to Nineveh. For Jonah, it’s curtains and all he has to look forward to is his eternity. What does Jonah do when he believes all is lost?
This morning we consider how Jonah’s response to his circumstances and to God in the belly of the fish gives us insight and hope when we’re in a dark place.

The general understanding of life is that we give of our best early and then as things progress, we give less. Jesus attended a wedding at Cana in Galilee where the host had an expectation that the best wine would already have been served, and is surprised that the wine he is served at the end is better. He does not know that this is wine which has come about as a result of the miraculous intervention of Jesus.
You can prepare and plan all you like, but there sometimes comes a time when that planning and preparation is just not enough. You run out. The plans you have made don’t cut the mustard and you come up short. Despite all your care and preparations, you run out of your resources.

For many people, the thing which sits right at the heart of our faith, the thing that it stands or falls on is utter nonsense. Paul describes the quandary by saying “if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith”.

The day we call Palm Sunday remembers the crowds who cut branches off palm trees and worshipped God as Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey.
Nowadays, many Christians describe ‘worship’ as that part of a Sunday service where people sing songs and make music to God. We even call the musicians the ‘worship team’. This can create and reinforce a belief that ‘worship’ and ‘music’ are interchangeable terms.

The crowds who hailed Christ as King on what we call Palm Sunday, and the Roman soldiers who nailed the sign ‘king of the Jews’ above Christ’s head on the cross a week later had no idea of the significance of what they were saying. The crowds were caught up in the moment, the Roman soldiers nailed the sign up as an insult. In both cases they were declaring a profound truth. As one born of David’s line, AND as the second person of the Trinity, Jesus is King not only by virtue of His human ancestry, but He is also king by virtue of His divinity: no one is better qualified to be king than Christ. Sadly, many believers live as ‘Christian republicans’, they claim to be citizens of the kingdom of God, but they forget that Christ being their king means they must obey him. Instead, in practice, they live out their daily lives as republicans, deciding for themselves what is right and wrong, good and bad, rather than following their king. Which are you? A republican or Royalist? You are either a subject of the king of kings, and a citizen of his kingdom or you are not. Julian tries to tackle this subject this morning.

This week we consider the second of the three ‘offices’ of Christ. Priesthood.
As Christians we are no longer under the Law, but a New Covenant and our high priest does not descend from Levi as those under the Old Covenant did. The Old Testament system of priests and sacrifices served to foreshadow the ministry and priesthood of Jesus, which is eternal.
How this works and what this means is the stuff of this morning’s message.

In Israel there were three different roles people were anointed to. Often with the use of oil, they were: prophet, priest and king.
The prophet, who spoke God’s words to the people.
The priest represented God before the people and the people before God.
The King, who ruled over the people as God’s representative.
Historically theologians have understood that Jesus the Messiah, the Christ, the ‘anointed’ one, perfectly fulfils each of these three functions. AND it has been customary to categorise the ‘work’ of Christ (i.e. what he does) into these three categories or ‘offices’. If you read John Calvin’s institutes, you will find a great deal of attention has been devoted to them.
This week we tackle the office of prophet, consider how Jesus IS the anointed prophet of God and what that means for the church, the body of Christ, today.

This week Julian has pre-recorded content as he’s away on retreat. Finishing off Romans, he looks at the list of names in Romans 16 and what we can learn from them. He then considers the threat of division coming from certain people and how we might recognise and defend against it in our own churches.

Paul is in Corinth when he writes the letter to the Romans, he talks about wanting to visit them on his way to Spain. He talks of the contributions made in Achaia and Macedonia for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem, which he is in the process of taking to Jerusalem. He asks for their prayers for God’s protection from the unbelievers in Judea.
Some thoughts I am going to tackle today:
1.How far? — are you willing to go to proclaim the gospel?
2.How secure? — are your plans for the future?
3.How Much? — the Christian discipline of giving.

Paul’s assessment of the Roman church is summarised in Romans15v14, he describes it as:
Full of Goodness,
Filled with knowledge
Able to instruct one another
Could someone describe us like that? Could they describe YOU like that? Full of goodness and full of knowledge and able to instruct?
Julian looks at this and at what else Paul says in this passage this morning ...

Quarrelling and judging one another is something which is not right for any believer. Jesus calls us to be peacemakers, He calls us to love one another. Earlier in his letter Paul had called us to ”live at peace with one another” (Romans 12:18). And much of the New Testament contains exhortations and advice on how to do just that.
Paul uses two examples to illustrate the kind of things we quarrel and judge one another about. The first being what we eat, the second being how we view one day.
Today we look at Romans 14v1–12 and make a start at unpacking what Paul says.

Walking in faith is clearly identified as walking in light. Paul here uses the imagery of night and day, that walking with Jesus is seen as walking in the light, in daytime, and NOT doing that is seen as walking in darkness, being in the night. The night is drawing to a close, says Paul, we are to wake up and put on, he describes, ‘armour of light’, and to clothe ourselves ‘with Christ’.

Using a single word to distinguish one kind of “love” from another is problematic, increasingly so in today’s culture. Our understanding of what we mean when we use the word love comes from both our experience of it, and the context of the words, the sentences we are saying. When people who we are talking to have different understanding and experience, they may not hear what we are intending to say. This ambiguity can be leveraged to bully people to accuse people of motivations they just don’t possess, and/or to bully them into agreeing with an ideology which is clearly opposed to biblical values. Even when there is no malicious intent, there can also be hurt and misunderstanding.
This is important because today, Paul tells us that we have a debt to love one another and that love is the fulfilment of the law. Today we consider the nuances and implications of what that truly means.

When people attack me, I have a number of responses which I’m tempted to make. I want to hit back, I want to run away, I want to justify myself. At the very least, I want to rant at them! Remember, though, as Christians, our response should not be any of those things, if we want to rant, we should rant at God — the Psalms show us that. In today’s passage, Paul suggests a number of other things we should do.

Last week we as we studied this passage, we looked at the strong witness of the New Testament of how important ‘one another’ is, the things we can do to enhance fellowship and the way we relate to one another. Looking at the qualities of devotion, honour, sharing, and hospitality, we noted that if the church could get to grips with these 4 things, it would be totally transformed.
This week our thoughts change focus to zeal, joy, patience, and faithfulness.

Last week we noted that Paul talks about the spiritual gifts in the context of our own self-image, and of how we relate to one another as the body of Christ. Verses 9—21 continues with this theme, and expands on how we can best do that. ‘One another’ is a very common phrase in the New Testament, whose writers call us to consider each other far more frequently than we might think. A cursory search of the New Testament reveals that there are at least 22 different instructions to ‘one another’ which appear all over the it! This surely shows how important fellowship is to the writers of the New Testament—and, by implication, to God Himself?
In today’s passage, Paul digs down and looks at two qualities we must develop if we are to enhance our ‘one another’s’, our fellowship life together. This morning Julian looks at what Paul says and considers its implications.

HOW do Christians and Jews relate? After all we share 60% of our Scripture with the Jews (39 of 66 books), we believe that the God they worship is the same God that we worship. We know that Jesus was ethnically Jewish, AND not only that, we believe that Jesus was, in terms of human ancestry, directly descended from King David and the rightful King of Israel. Yet the Jews rejected Him, and as a result they were broken off from the vine and the Gentiles were grafted in.
In Today’s passage, Julian looks at how Paul speaks about Israel being broken off and the Gentiles being grafted in, and makes some comments about what that means.

Romans 11 is part of the section of Romans where Paul is specifically addressing Israel and God’s dealing with them. Some say that since Paul is addressing Israel, that there is nothing we can learn from it.
However, this is in the Scripture and, as Paul says to Timothy, ALL of Scripture is useful to us, so since God deemed it important enough to inspire Paul to write it, we have to tease out what WE, as gentile believers have to learn from this.

Why is it that when you and I became a Christian, when we bowed the knee and accepted Christ, when our past sin was washed away and our names were written in the book of life – why, at that point, didn’t God bend down and scoop us out of this world and take us to Himself?
Paul answers this very question …
“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent?”

In today's passage we read Paul quoting Moses and explaining what righteousness is and what it is not. Paul makes a point of saying, righteousness is not something which is far away and unachievable, it is close by. We don’t get close to God, HE draws close to us! We don’t have to, by our own effort, get to Jesus. He has already come to us. We don’t have to work to get to heaven, He has already done the work. We don’t have to atone for our own sins, He has already atoned for them.
So, how do we find righteousness? We declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10v9)
The question everyone of us must answer then, is have I done that?

Last week, we looked at what Paul says about justice, and he goes on here to look at righteousness. Justice and righteousness often go hand-in-hand. For example, Ecclesiastes says this, If you see in a province the oppression of the poor and the violation of justice and righteousness, do not be amazed at the matter, for the high official is watched by a higher, and there are yet higher ones over them (Ecclesiastes 5:8). Interestingly, this particular passage notes that our actions are observed by others. But ultimately all our actions are watched by (as the writer of Ecclesiastes notes) yet higher ones over them – this is God himself!

The concept of judgment is very broad. Judging whether it is safe to cross the road, is on a different level to judging someone for murder. Yet the word we use is the same for both (never forget words have uses as well as meanings, and we must strive to ensure that when we communicate with people that they understand and accept our use of a word).
There is an attitude which is prevalent today which takes upon itself the right to judge for itself what is right and wrong, and then to measure God up against that standard.
In this morning’s passage, Paul anticipates and answers those who feel they have a right to judge and question God.

Romans 9:5 is a verse which makes a very specific description of Jesus, “To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen”.
Paul says that Jesus is, “from their race” in other words, He is Jewish. Paul also says it is “according to the flesh”. This is an assertion of the humanity of Jesus. But Jesus is not JUST human, Paul also says in this verse that He is “God over all”. One of the clearest and most direct Scriptural evidences that the Bible teaches the Divinity of Christ.
In this one verse, we have an assertion of both the humanity AND the divinity of Jesus.

The relationship between Christians and Jews over the centuries has been a turbulent one. It was in a Jewish culture that Jesus came and lived and if you read the accounts in the Gospels and Acts, you cannot miss the antagonism between the Jewish leaders and Jesus and also the early Christians.
On the one hand, over the centuries, Christians have committed some abhorrent crimes against the Jews, who they blame for killing Jesus.
On the other hand, some of the most vocal supporters of the Jewish people and of the nation of Israel are Christians.
But the Jews are God's special people, and God promised Abraham, right at the start that He will bless those who bless Israel, and those who curse Israel He will curse (cf. Genesis 12:3). We cannot simply dismiss the Jews or their relationship with God out of hand. How they fit into God's plan of salvation is something which Paul is going to unpick in the chapters 9-11.
This morning, we start our consideration of what Paul says ...

This passage contains one of the most comforting statements for followers of Jesus. Separation from God is something unregenerate people live with every day. The gospel is what repairs that rift, so Jesus' separation from God on the cross give us a route back into relationship with God in eternity. When we proclaim the gospel, we don't primarily deal with physical issues, we are called to a much higher purpose. At the cross we can be reconciled to God, we can be reunited with Him, and the rift is repaired. Completely. Permanently.
Paul says it twice, and in v39 he asks what will separate us from the love of Christ, with an implicit answer - nothing, and then he goes to an explicit answer, "nothing in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus".
Today, amongst other things, Julian talks about this subject.

The activity and the role of the Spirit in the life of a believer is a question Christians have argued over for centuries.
Whilst he has talked about the Spirit earlier in his letter, in this passage, Paul really gets down to it in this morning’s passage and focuses in on the Spirit and his role in our lives. He describes and contrasts two ways of living: the way of the Spirit, and the way of the flesh.
This is not a message about the spiritual gifts - we’ll get to those in Romans 12!

In Ch 5, we read about how we are not in Adam, but in Christ.
In Ch 6 we hear that we are not living in sin, but living in Christ.
Last week, we looked at 7v1-6 which shows that now we are in Christ, we cannot be BOTH under grace and under law, because that is tantamount to adultery.
this week, we look at 7v7-25, and how Paul develops this thinking.

The motif of being “married” to God runs as a rich vein throughout both the Old Testament and the New. This significant spiritual truth surfaces in Paul’s teaching here.
One key thing to understand from this passage is how Paul uses the illustration from marriage to show that belonging to both the Law, and to Christ is tantamount to committing adultery. That our death to our old life released us from any obligations to follow the law, just as a physical death releases the surviving spouse from the covenant of marriage.

What IS the relationship between our actions and grace?
Do our actions really matter? If God is a god of love, tolerance and forgiveness, surely our sinful actions reveal His qualities more effectively?
IF we are Christians, what does it mean that we have “died to sin”, and how does this relate to our actions?
Questions Julian considers from this passage today.
In the UK, we call today Easter Sunday. The Americans call it resurrection Sunday, which is a far more accurate description of the importance of today. It is the day we celebrate the single most significant event in history–the Bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15 that ….
if Christ is not raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith (v14).
if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins (v17).
AND
So, Julian looks at 1 Corinthians 15 and the good news that “Christ has indeed been raised from the dead” (v20).

The Seed Christian Fellowship is a small Christian Church in Somerset UK
This morning we look at what Paul says in Romans 5v12-21 about two opposing connections:
The first connection is the sin 'nature' all men everywhere inherit from Adam. At its core, sin has nothing to do with whether or not we do what is right for what is wrong, it is much more deeply embedded in humanity than that. This shows the very deep and foundational nature of sin.
The second connection is the access to grace every man can gain through faith in Jesus Christ. So, just as sin entered the world through one man, its solution also comes through just one man.
These two connections work out in two ways.
Sin (which deserves ) condemnation (which leads to) death, with,
Grace (which brings) justification (which leads to) life.
Simply put, everyone has a choice to make. God’s way, the way of grace and life, or Man’s way, the way of sin and death. Which will you choose?
So many Christians struggle with assurance. Even though they have trusted Jesus, even though they have turned away from sinfully following their own desires and walking their own path, even though they have submitted their life and their eternity to God, often they feel that somehow there is still something about them or their lifestyle which God doesn’t approve of, that their faith is somehow not enough, and that they aren’t really “proper Christians”.
Assurance of faith (or more particularly, LACK of assurance) is a real issue for many.
Today Julian looks at how Paul’s words in Romans 5v1-11 can help us gain and maintain an assurance of faith.

There are so many reasons to be frightened today. Covid 19, Ukraine and the threat of WW3, climate change — it seems reasons to be fearful are all around us.
How do we respond in situations where fear is knocking at the door?
The spies came back from spying the promised land and 10 of them were fearful of the future. 2 were not. Why? And how do we respond in the face of fearful situations?

The Jews didn't look back to David, or to Moses or to Judah (their very name Jew derives from Judah). They looked back to Abraham. They saw themselves as descendants of Abraham, which is significant for them. Paul references Abraham to explain that just as justification came before circumcision for Abraham (who was generations before Moses and the law), it, likewise, comes by faith for the Jews.
Julian looks at what Paul says and seeks to draw some lessons for us, today.

This is a really significant passage in Romans. 10 verses rich in content, which could keep us occupied for weeks and weeks! Martin Luther, whose challenge to the Catholic Church in the early 16th Century sparked the reformation, claimed that they were “the chief point and the very central place of the epistle—and the whole Bible”.
The passage does use a number of religious words, which many do not fully understand. What do they mean? That is the stuff of today’s message.

When we witness to people, we see and hear all sorts of reactions, and questions. Some of them are genuine, from people of good faith. But many questions we hear aren’t looking for an explanation as much as an ‘exit’. That is, they are not a search for truth, but an attempt to ask a ‘gotcha!’ to justify rejecting the message of the gospel.
There are a number of ways we can deal with questions, one Paul uses in today’s passage is to quote Scripture. What can we learn form the Scriptures Paul quotes? This morning, Julian considers that very thought.

One of the most common criticisms of Christians is that all Christians are hypocrites—people say, in effect, ‘people don’t believe in God, Christian, because of you’.
This is exactly what Paul concludes this morning’s text with, he says: “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you” (Romans 2v24).
It is SO, SO important that we get to grips with understanding this. We cannot, we must not, live our lives oblivious to the fact that people watch us, that HOW we live our lives as Christians directly impacts the effectiveness of our witness. It is hard enough countering the popular, public, perception of Christians without adding to it with our own hypocrisy.
This week, Julian looks at what today’s passage has to say on the subject.

Last week we looked at how Paul describes those who live immoral lifestyles and those who approve of them. However, not everyone who discards knowledge of God live that way. Many unbelievers are moral, caring people. Who do good works, live honest lives and to all outward appearances are no different to those who are of Christ.
This week we look at what Paul’s switch from shameless immorality to pious moralism. Are the moral lives enough to escape the day of judgement? Paul makes no bones about it, a pious, moral, judgemental person is in as much jeopardy as the most hedonistic sinner.

One of the biggest barriers to Evangelism is fear. Many Christians feel anxiety and fear when they are challenged to witness to people they know. However, it is not usually fear of ridicule or persecution. The fear most regularly expressed to me is fear of not knowing what to say.
What exactly IS the gospel? If we are to become messengers of the Gospel, we need to know what it’s all about, we need to be familiar with it, and we need to be constantly reminded of its truth and importance. Today I look at what Paul says about the gospel in Romans 1v1-5 which gives us more of a handle on it.

Paul’s letter to the Romans is possibly one of the most influential letters in the Bible. From Augustine, through Luther to John Wesley and more besides, many Christians through the centuries have cited Romans as playing a key role in their lives and faith.
Over the coming months, we are going to look at the letter Paul wrote around AD57 to the church in Rome and consider what it is saying to us, today.

Esther 9 and 10 are the finale of the book of Esther. Reading how the Jews got relief from their enemies, and the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday makes difficult reading for Christians. How do we square “love your enemies” with “the rest of the Jews who were in the king's provinces also gathered to defend their lives, and got relief from their enemies and killed 75,000 of those who hated them”?
If God does not change (Malachi 3:6), then there must be a way to reconcile the apparent contradiction between these two perspectives.

The Reveal …
We finally get to the point where Esther reveals her heritage to the king. In his rage he goes out into the garden only to return finding Haman pleading for his life. Misunderstanding Haman’s actions he has him impaled on the pole Haman had built for his enemy, Mordecai.
So much conflict and tension in this world can be directly traced to misunderstanding and pre-judgement about others actions and words.

At the heart of the book of Esther is how she reveals her hidden heritage to the king. This week we start to consider HOW exactly she does that and what we as Christians can learn from it about how we reveal our faith to those around us.
In today’s message, Julian considers the issues of waiting, the power of one and 20 seconds of insane courage. Join us as we consider how this applies in our Christian walk.
Last Sunday Sophie took us through Esther 4, we uploaded the visdeo to our YouTube channel but neglected to upload the podcast.
This is rectifying that oversight!
IN THE BLUE CORNER we have Mordecai, a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin, who has already shown his good character and integrity by not only taking on the responsibility of fatherhood and raising an orphan girl as his own, but also by exposing a plot to kill the king!
IN THE RED CORNER we have Haman, an Agagite, who, raised to a place of power and honour, uses his influence to plot the death of Mordecai and the genocide of the Jews.
What are we to make of the conflict between these two men? How will God bring about the rescue of the underdog with integrity faced with a more powerful and more devious opponent?

“The enemy of my enemy is my friend” isn’t he? Mordecai’s people are still subjugated under the rule of Xerxes, the king of Persia.
What would you do if you heard of a plot against the man who is subjecting you to servitude?
Mordecai reveals the plot and saves the king’s life. He reveals it to the king through Esther, so he doesn’t even claim credit for the discovery, though Esther does give him the credit when reporting it to the king.

For others it is a bed of pain and sorrow we find it hard to let go of.

Join Julian this week as he starts to look at some of the more obscure Scriptures we have - The Minor Prophets
Even though they are considered to be a part of the word of God, with the possible exception of Numbers, Leviticus and Deuteronomy, the prophetic books (particularly the minor prophets) are probably the most neglected writings in Scripture.
Yet if you read them, you will notice that they seem to be stories of madmen ranting at people. Some of the things they get told by God to say and do are nuts!
What are we to make of that? How does what they say apply to us today? That is the question we will attempt to consider over the next few weeks.

Jairus fights through the crowds to get to Jesus because his daughter is near death. Almost as soon as Jesus starts to come, he stops. “Who touched me?” - the delay is fatal for Jairus, the news comes, his daughter is dead. A moment of inconvenience has turned into a tragedy.
This account in Matthew Mark and Luke provide a rich seam of wisdom for us to mine about the challenges and the blessings of following Jesus. Join us this morning as we mine it.

This week we are looking at a nutcase! At lest that’s how many perceive him. John the Baptist lived in the wilderness, we are told that he wore clothes made of camel hair and his food was locusts and wild honey. We know that his parents were told that no alcoholic drink was to pass his lips.
His message was pretty simple really .. REPENT!
He was as Jesus says “the greatest of men and the least in heaven” (read Matthew 11:11)
Ultimately he was beheaded to fulfil a promise Herod made to his step-daughter.
Join us on Sunday as Julian considers what we can learn from his life.

Jesus and the pharisees didn't get on particularly well! They accused him of blasphemy, of casting out demons by Beelzebub, and he called them hypocrites and whitewashed tombs. Ultimately, the religious leaders led by Caiaphas were at the forefront of the effort to try, convict and execute him.
But a few of the religious leaders actually did come to Jesus and some followed him. One such religious leader was Nicodemus who came to Jesus in the middle of the night.
Join us as Julian considers what we can learn from his encounter with Jesus, which we can read about in John 3.

Luke is not one of the Apostles, neither as far as we can tell is he amongst the first believers in Jerusalem. He appears relatively speaking quite late in the Biblical account of the spread of the Gospel and the growth of the church. And yet he has a significant role in the writing of the Bible, he pens both the Gospel which bears his name and the book of Acts, and he goes to some trouble to make sure what he is writing is accurate so that we can be certain of what we have learned.
The information we have of Luke is surprisingly sparse, yet we can learn so much from him.
Join us on Sunday at 10:30 when Julian considers what we can learn from him.

As Jesus enters Jericho, one man tried to see him, but couldn't. He is just too short, so he climbs a tree and not only can he see Jesus, he is seen by Jesus. Zacchaeus is one of the few characters who people remember from childhood, not just because of his name, but because of the circumstance son his meeting with Jesus. This meeting totally transforms him. Does meeting with Jesus totally transform you? This week Julian looks at this event and considers some things we might take on board from it.

This week we are looking at a failure which results in death! Ananias and Sapphira sell some property and give some of the money to the apostles, yet they end up judged and dead! Why? Surely giving money to the church is a good thing, right?
Today Julian unpacks why this couple fell foul of one of the biggest mistakes people make. The idea that appearances are all that matter.

Have you ever considered what your name means? Nowadays people are less concerned about the meaning of a name than how it sounds, especially when coupled with a surname. But in Biblical times, the meaning of names was significant, and some people were renamed. Most notably Simon was renamed Peter by Jesus.
The person we are walking with this week was also renamed. He actually had the name Joseph, he came from Cyprus, but the Christians in the early church gave him a different name, a nickname if you will. That name was Barnabas and we are told that it means “son of encouragement”. This is almost certainly because that’s exactly what Barnabas was, an encourager.
What does it look like to be an encourager? What difference does it make to people around us? These are questions Julian considers this week. Do join us and see what conclusions he draws.

Apollos is a young man from Alexandria who we first encounter in Acts 18 where he is in Ephesus “speaking with great fervour” about Jesus in the synagogue, yet his understanding of Jesus is not complete and Priscilla and Aquila explain “the way of God more fully” to him. Moving to Corinth, he becomes one of the foci of division in the fledgling church there. What can we learn from this obviously very gifted young man? This Week: Cornelius is a Roman Centurion in the Italian Regiment in Caesarea. He is a righteous man and his good deeds and prayers to God do not go unnoticed in heaven.
Luke’s account of Cornelius and how his household hears and accepts the Gospel marks a major step change in the life and growth of the fledgling group of Christ followers. The significance of these Jewish background believers recognising and accepting the inclusion of Gentiles into their midst cannot be overstated.
Enemies truly have become friends in the kingdom of God!

Following on in our series walking with the disciples, we are now walking with some of the other people in the Bible whose faith is an inspiration to us. This week we take a look at someone who is almost unknown. In Acts 9n Ananias is told by God to go to Saul to pray for him. Saul has a letter from the Jews authorising him to arrest and imprison those who follow Jesus. Wow! What would you do if God told you to do something you thought might result in your arrest? What do you do when you are occupied by a hostile nation? Some, like Matthew collaborated and worked for the Romans. Others, however, saw violence as the only solution. These men would have thought nothing of using their concealed dagger to murder a Roman - after all as Romans that’s no less than they deserved. They were known as the Zealots, and the word zeal in all of it’s forms still conjures up for us images of passion and single mindedness to a cause.
Yet Jesus chose such a man - Simon the Zealot. Someone who was from this revolutionary and murderous group. "Gentle Jesus meek and mild" choosing a man of violence as a disciple? What do we make of this?
This week we listen to our guest speaker, Julian Marsh as he unpacks this for us. Do join us and listen to what he makes of this man and applies it to our daily lives.

Thomas gets a bad rap. He is the disciple who has an adjective added to his name, just as saying “Judas!” to someone who betrays you, someone who expresses uncertainty about something is very often called a “doubting Thomas”.
What is the relationship between fear and courage?
What about between doubt and faith?
Can one exist without the other? Or is one the lack or absence of the other?
These are amongst the questions Julian will seek to answer as he looks at the life of Thomas, the one known for “doubting”. The one who, when he meets the risen Lord makes one of the most significant declarations of faith in Jesus we have recorded in the Bible.
This nuanced character has so much to teach us about faith and doubt, and courage. Do join us as we walk with the last of the disciples this week.

One of the disciples is described differently in the different gospels, John identifies him as Judas (not Iscariot), Matthew and Mark identify him as Judas son of James and Luke identifies him as Thaddaeus. This often forgotten disciple asks an intriguing question of Jesus: “why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”. In fact these are the only recorded words or actions of this disciple.

The disciple Philip is practically ignored by Matthew Mark and Luke. He is, however noticed by John and John records a number of incidents which we can look at. Philip brings his friend Nathanael to Jesus, he is tested by Jesus when He feed 5,000 people, he brings some Greek men to our Lord and finally, he expresses a heart which says “show us the Father and that will be enough for us”. As a general rule, our podcasts lag behind our Sunday output by a few weeks. However, this week is Easter Sunday and the message is about the Resurrection, so we are releasing it for Easter Sunday!
The Christian faith stands or falls on the resurrection. The 10 commandments, the golden rule, human sexuality, everything we believe is worthless if Jesus did not rise from the dead.
Paul says if Christ did not rise from the dead we above all men are to be pitied. (1 Corinthians 15:19)
How do non-Christians view the empty tomb? Julian looks at some of the more common explanations and evaluates them.
One of the disciples, one of the 12 men personally selected by Jesus to carry his message of hope to the world is all but unknown to us.
His inclusion in the lists of the disciples, and the inference that he was, along with all the other disciples, witness to all that Jesus said and did is practically all we know about him. If he ever did anything to stand out from the other Apostles, if he ever asked Jesus a question worthy of note, Scripture does not record it. The only thing about him which stands out is that he does not stand out, he is completely obscure. He even has a common name.
This man is James. But not James the brother of John, not James the brother of Jesus, but a shadowy figure few people can remember if asked to list the 12 disciples: James, son of Alphaeus or more commonly known as James the Less.
When fame and notoriety is so sought in our modern society, Julian considers what we can learn from such a man.

Matthew is the disciple who wrote the first of the gospels. You would expect that we would know loads about him. Who was he? How did he get on with the other disciples? Did he do or say anything which we can learn from - the information in the Bible is surprisingly sparse.
What what we do know is he was a Tax Collector, a Roman collaborator who left his old life, to follow the Saviour. How does Jesus’ choice of someone who had a role which was almost universally hated by society teach us about how he views people today?

The name Judas is almost universally used to describe someone when they betray you, and the expression 30 pieces of silver is also associated with betrayal. This practice finds its roots in the Bible. The betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot crosses the centuries and informs our culture today in a very significant way. So much so that the name Judas, a common name in Jesus’ time, is exceptionally rare nowadays.
What can we learn from the disciple who was a thief and a traitor? What can his actions teach us about how to live life as Christians in the 21st century?
This week we look at Judas and consider how his actions can inform us in our Christian life.

Nathanael is one of the “lesser-known” disciples, the little we do know about him comes from his first encounter with Jesus. What would you respond if Jesus verbalised what was in your heart? Or what you did when no one is watching? That’s what Jesus said about Nathanael and his response is pretty extraordinary!
Preached on 7th February 2021, Julian looks at what we can learn from that encounter and considers how it applies to us. Join us every Sunday at 10:30 for our online service.
