Only a few decades ago, a typical classroom would be filled with grubby desks; hard, squeaking benches; scruffy log table books; illegible teacher’s scrawl on the blackboard; and dried-up inkwells.

In the 1970s, classrooms were revolutionized; many of these Dickensian items were replaced by personal calculators and ballpoint pens.

In the late 1980s, the personal computer entered the class framework, followed in the early 1990s by Internet connectivity to the World Wide Web.

Nowadays, individual electronic tablets are not an uncommon sight — consigning slate tablets, blackboards and chalk to the history books.

However, even though the classroom equipment has dramatically changed, pupils still need to listen to their teachers and study long and hard to ensure good exam grades.

WORDS
grubby: dirty.
to squeak: to make a short and sharp sound.
scruffy: of low quality because of long use or bad handling.
illegible: not readable.
scrawl: illegible handwriting.
chalk: a white or colored substance used for writing or drawing.

Despite the domination of supermarkets for shopping staples, not all family habits and customs have been abandoned or forgotten.

In Central Europe, many families still preserve home-grown fruit, herbs and vegetables. There is nothing nicer, in the depth of a bitter winter, than opening up a jar of preserves or pickles, knowing that they were from your own garden.

So from the middle of August until October, cellars, cool pantries and parlours are filled with preserved berries, apricots, peaches, apples, plums, pears, onions, beetroot, home- made ketchup, pickled cucumbers, dried herbs and mushrooms.

WORDS
off: away from.
staples: základné potraviny.

Experts claim that we should ‘plan in’ more greenery into our city environments and plant new forests, replacing those felled and cleared for business purposes.

This would help to prevent catastrophic rain water run-off and, in urban environments, reduce reflected heat on blistering hot summer days.

Temperatures reached in summer are sometimes 10 degrees Celsius higher in ‘concrete down-towns‘ than in the countryside.

Elderly people are also known to be at a higher risk from suffering heart attacks, by as much as 10 percent, when the temperature soars in urban man made ‘ heat sinks ‘.

WORDSblockhead: a stupid person.

https://simpleenglishnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Space-Waste-online-audio-converter.com_.mp3Photo by Jeremy Straub on UnsplashSpace waste, space junk or orbital debris, has become a serious issue.

It includes spent rocket stages, dust from solid rocket motors, unused satellites and other man made fragments. All such waste poses a collision threat with operational spacecraft or even crashing back to Earth.

Space junk fragments were not originally perceived as a problem, scientists wrongly predicted that the debris would just burn itself up as it returned through the earth’s atmosphere.

Now ground based lasers, ” laser brooms “, are to be deployed to target this space junk, breaking it into very small pieces or even sweeping it out of the path of functional orbital traffic.

Bryndza Dumplings / Ahhoy.netProbably every Slovak would mention this meal as the first choice when asked to name the Slovak national dish.

Bryndza is a special cheese made from sheep’s milk. It can be replaced by a cottage cheese made from cow’s milk but then it cannot be called Bryndzove halusky in Slovakia any more – it is Halusky s tvarohom (Dumplings with cottage cheese).

Ingredients

2-3 large uncooked potatoes
fine whole wheat flour
salt
smoked bacon
bryndza

Instructions

1/ Peel and finely grate the potatoes.
2/ Add flour in order to make a dough or mixture which is not too
tough but also not to watery. Some people add milk and an egg to the mixture
but it is not necessary to do so.
3/ Add salt to taste.
4/ Boil enough water in a large saucepan with 2 tbsp of salt.
5/ Then form the dumplings with a knife or teaspoon on, with cold water washed, wooden platter and thrown them into the bubbling salted water. (There is now special equipment with which you can form halusky more easily and which can be bought in shops.)
6/ Boil the dumplings a little.
7/ When the dumplings are done they will float on the surface of the water. Pick them out with a strainer, rinse with cold water and mix with bryndza.
8/ Cut up little pieces of smoked bacon and fry them. Then put the fried bacon pieces on top of the meal.

People usually serve Bryndzove halusky with a cup of ordinary milk.

These days, however, there has been a resurgence in the brands which were once popular before 1989.

Krowka caramels in Poland, Tibi chocolate in Hungary and Bon Pari fruit candies in the Czech Republic are all making a comeback.

Simple Past TenseThe simple past tense describes an action which started and also ended in the past and which has no connections with the present. The simple past tense is often accompanied by a time term which relates to the past: e.g., a year ago, last month, yesterday, etc…

It is created by using the following:
Positive sentence – subject + verb in its past form.

If a verb is regular then its past form just takes –ed (if such a verb ends by e then only d is added, if a verb ends by a consonant +y, this y will change to i).

You must learn past forms of irregular verbs by heart.

They worked (work) hard.
She bought (buy) a new evening dress last week.

In a negative sentence did not is placed between a subject and verb (in every person). In this case the verb is in its basic form, ie, infinitive without to.

I did not (didn’t) meet them there.
They did not (didn’t) write the test yesterday.

In a question did is placed before a subject (in every person).
In this case the verb is in its basic form: infinitive without to.

Image by Jerowiki, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia CommonsToday a reader from Uruguay is sharing a recipe with us.
Fried cakes (or tortas fritas) is an Uruguayan recipe for rainy, cold days.

Ingredients
3 1/2 cups of flour
1 cup of fat (neither butter nor oil)
1/2 tsp of salt
3 spoons of warm water (or what’s needed to form a soft dough)

Instructions
Mix the flour with the fat and the salt. Add enough water to form a soft dough. Leave it for half an hour.

Knead the dough until soft and warm. You should even hit it!

Then make small balls and use the rolling pin to form big circles. Make a small cut in the centre of it.

Put them in really hot fat to fry them. Don’t worry if the first one gets burnt! The fat should be really hot.

The secret of this delicious easy dish is to knead it for a looooong time before frying them.

SimpleEnglishNews.comThe simple present tense describes an action which is repeated whether on regular or irregular basis.

It is created by using the following:

Positive sentence = subject + verb ( “s” is added to a verb in the third person-he/she/it).

We go to school.
Peter works in an office.
They like reading books.

Negative sentence – do not is placed between a subject and a verb ( in the third person does not is added instead of do not and “s” is not added to a verb).

Question – do (does instead of do in the third person and “s” is not added to a verb) is placed before a subject.

Do you work till six p.m.?
Does she play the piano?
Do they go to school?

Present tense of the verb “have” (“has” in the third person) in its meaning to possess:

– negative sentence and question can be created by the following way but this becomes rare,

I have a dog.
Have they a dog?

When you are in a new place you should follow the conventions which people living in the area have.

Picture byefesfromPixabayRobin Hood, a noble skilled in archery and swordsmanship, became an outlaw in the time of King Richard the Lionheart.

He hid in Sherwood Forest with his Merry Men, a band of outlaws and a girlfriend Maid Marion.

Traditionally dressed in Lincoln green this rogue group of outlaws would ambush and rob the rich, then give most of the loot to the poor people, who were heavily ‘ tithed ‘ or taxed to pay for the war being conducted by King Richard in far away Jerusalem.

Robin, despite the many devious plots of the Sheriff of Nottingham, always avoided capture.

He was finally given a full pardon by King Richard when the King returned from the Crusades.

There would also have to be other factors, as your weight and speed of the exercise, included in the calculation.

Anyway, roughly we can estimate that jumping rope can burn 660-1000 calories per hour.

Running can help with burning 550-800 calories.

The burn of rowing, which works your entire body, is 480-700 calories per hour.

Here are some “non-sport” activities and their calorie burn in 30 minutes:

  • Cleaning the house = 100 calories
  • Gardening or weeding = 150 calories
  • Mowing the lawn = 210 calories
  • Strolling = 105 calories
  • Raking leaves = 145 calories
  • Vacuuming = 120 calories
