SOME DEFINITE SERVICE "God knows me and calls me by my name.… God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission—I never may know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. Somehow I am necessary for His purposes… I have a part in this great work; I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good, I shall do His work; I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it, if I do but keep His commandments and serve Him in my calling. Therefore I will trust Him. Whatever, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him; In perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him; If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. My sickness, or perplexity, or sorrow may be necessary causes of some great end, which is quite beyond us. He does nothing in vain; He may prolong my life, He may shorten it; He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends, He may throw me among strangers, He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide the future from me— still He knows what He is about.… Let me be Thy blind instrument. On the virtue of Sobriety: "Temperance is the moral virtue that moderates the attraction of pleasures and provides balance in the use of created goods. It ensures the will's mastery over instincts and keeps desires within the limits of what is honorable. The temperate person directs the sensitive appetites toward what is good and maintains a healthy discretion: "Do not follow your inclination and strength, walking according to the desires of your heart." Temperance is often praised in the Old Testament: "Do not follow your base desires, but restrain your appetites." In the New Testament it is called "moderation" or "sobriety." We ought "to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world." - CCC 1809 On the virtue of Chastity: “Chastity is the successful integration of sexuality within the person...it includes an apprenticeship in self-mastery, which is a training in human freedom...The alternative is clear: either man governs his passions and finds peace, or he lets himself be dominated by them and becomes unhappy.” - CCC 2337-2339 On the virtue of Excellence: “These men endure sufferings beyond number, they use many means to build their strength, they sweat constantly as they train... in a word, they discipline themselves in order that their whole life prior to the contest is but a preparation for it... How then can we, who have been promised rewards so wondrous in number and in splendour that no tongue can recount them (eternal life), even think of winning them if we do nothing other than spend our lives in leisure and make but half-hearted efforts" - St. Basil
"If he wants to exercise this ministry toward others, the priest himself must have received this grace of reconciliation and peace: he must be at peace with God (living in the freedom and joy of knowing that he is a child of God), he must be reconciled with himself (freely accepting his own weakness), and he must be reconciled with others (capable of accepting them as they are, forgiving their errors, holding no grudges against anyone). He must also be reconciled with life as it is, not being bitter or resentful toward existence. Even if life's paths are sometimes dark, painful, or deceiving, he must always maintain this trust that the Lord, like a good shepherd, "leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake" (Ps 23:3). It seems to me that the deepest meaning of the seventh beatitude could be expressed like this: blessed are those who are capable of welcoming and keeping in themselves the peace of God, in order to transmit it later to others - not spreading fear, worry, division, agitation, or bitterness around themselves, but radiating the great, kind, divine peace. May all our lives be a conduit of the Risen Christ's gift to his disciples: "Peace be with you" (Jn 20:19).

We talk All Things New from a college kid's perspective, what growing up in a parish looked like, and how transformation is taking place in the lives of young people today. Marygrove is one of the largest therapeutic residential treatment programs in the state of Missouri. They provide a safe home, compassionate care, and high-quality mental health services to children who have experienced significant trauma in their young lives. This is just a start. There are many more examples that could be used, but what’s important is that our whole person – body, heart, and mind – be caught up in following the Lord. Feeding the senses: - Christian friendship - Christian music - not filling your senses with junk…being judicious about what and how much you consume - allowing yourself to “feel” whatever is going on…your emotions tell you a lot about yourself and where God may be leading Forming the heart: - Quiet prayer/lectio divina - Service (aka hard work done for others) - daily devotions - working on a particular virtue daily Enlightening the mind: - solid books…it’s a marathon, not a sprint - online content (talks, podcasts, etc.) …you can overdo this. - best way to learn something is to teach it
