Our friend Matt Borders has departed the show… As a parting treat though, he dishes up one last story that ties into the spirit of the holidays. The Christmas Truce of 1914, a shred of humanity during the darkening days of the First World War.
The Truce has become so steeped in legend that it takes on an almost mythical perspective. During the war need articles and letters where written about it. Between the two world wars books referenced the event and following the Second World War the event has made it into film on several occasions.
What exactly happened on Christmas Eve and Day 1914? Did it occur as popular culture would have us believe? What happened to the men involved? All this and more will be discussed as we dive into this very special event, the 1914 Christmas Truce.

It’s the end of the year again, which means it’s the end of the season… our 5th season! And while it is customary for us to take a look back at the years work we have put out, this year we will also be looking back at 5 years of doing the podcast, because this years edition of our Year In Review, will also be the last time Co-Host Matt Borders joins us.
After 5 years behind the microphone, Matt will be stepping away from the show, and instead of mourning the departure of such an immense talent and historian, we will celebrate his time and contributions with us, and send him off as friends!
It’s been a wild and unexpectedly wonderful ride and we look forward to continuing that adventure into next season, but for now let’s get nostalgic and have some fun with Matty B one last time!

The guys have Rob Ambrose back in studio! This time we are getting a two part episode about the early years of the Civil War out in Rob's neck of the woods, the Bath Romney Campaign!
This often overlooked campaign in the winter of 1861-1862 saw some of the already rising stars of both the United States and Confederate armies, including Thomas J. Jackson, George McClellan, William Loring and Frederick Lander. How these men, and their forces operate during this campaign will be discussed in detail.
This is campaign is Rob's baby and as such he gives the guys a lot of details. So keep an eye out for part two of the Bath-Romney Campaign and the conclusion of Rob's story in the very near future!

Now for something completely different!
The guys are back in Gettysburg with friend of the show Codie Eash, but this time, for the first time, they recorded the show live! That's right, as part of the Seminary Ridge Museum's 24 Hours on the Ridge fundraiser event, the History Things Podcast was invited to host a live recording!
Through the great work or Producer Parker, the War Department Studio was set up in the Seminary Ridge Museum where Codie took the guys through the visit of Frederick Douglass to Gettysburg in 1869. How Douglass was received, what he spoke on and how his speech fits into the context of the nation was discussed. In addition, Codie went into detail on other important events regarding the development of Gettysburg and early reunions that occurred that same year, 1869.

Joining Pat and Matt in the War Department Studio is former Reconstruction National Historic site ranger, Rich Condon! Rich is a brilliant researcher and storyteller who has studied the Department of the South, and specifically it's United States Colored Troops in depth.
Rich shares his research with the guys on the formation of the Department of the South, early attempts at Emancipation and the raising of African American troops in the department. How these early efforts put pressure on the Lincoln Administration to make Emancipation a policy and how the United States Colored Troops were eventually raised and utilitized throughout the Department.
This is a great conversation that you definitely don't want to miss, looking at the deeper meaning and ramifications of the war.

For the 162 commemoration of the Battle of Antietam Pat & Matt turned to friend of the show, Scott Hartwig, to discuss the second volume in his Maryland Campaign series. Following on the back of To Antietam Creek, Scott published last year, I Dread the Thought of the Place.
This massive tome goes into detail on the specific movements of the contending armies during the Battle of Antietam, as well as the personalities of the campaign. Scott discusses the motivations and objectives of both McClellan and Lee during the Campaign, as well as how he pulled all this material together.

The boys are back with another shipwreck and who better to talk shipwrecks with than the host of the Shipwrecks & Sea Dogs podcast, Rich Napolitano! Rich gives us a deep dive on one of the most famous shipwrecks in both history and pop culture, the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The Big Fitz was the pride of the Great Lakes, a massive ore hauler that did the run from Wisconsin down to Detroit, Michigan. This trip took tons upon tons of ore over the dangerous waters of the Great Lakes, particularly those of Lake Superior.
It was while on Superior on November 10, 1975 that the Edmund Fitzgerald was caught in an early winter storm and lost with all hands. The loss of the massive ship and it's crew sparked an extensive search as well as the famous song.

Building off their first of the year topic, Pat and Matt got the chance to discuss the most famous soldiers of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, the coal miners of the 48 Pennsylvania Infantry! To help flesh out the history of this well known and documented regiment is fellow ranger, John Hoptak.
John and Matt go way back, having both previously worked at Antietam National Battlefield and Pat was fortunate to attend several of John's programs while he was there. Throughout the years however the 48th Pennsylvania has been a passion project for John, not only on the battlefields of the National Park Service, but also in his personal research and writing.

As a follow up to the summer discussion with Melissa Winn about the important relationship between Ulysses S. Grant and his Chief of Staff John Rawlings, the guys have brought Melissa back to look at the specifics of the Vicksburg Campaign and how these men coordinated that operation.

Heading into the summer, Pat and Matt are joined by Melissa Winn, the now former Director of Photography Research for HistoryNet. Melissa provides the guys with details on a man who is often overlooked by history and was overshadowed by his boss during the American Civil War, John A. Rawlins, aide-de-camp of Ulysses S. Grant himself.
Rawlins, a prewar friend of Grant's, was an influential lawyer and democrat in Galena, Illinois prior to the war. Upon the outbreak of hostilities he famously declared that, "there were no parties anymore" and that he would enlist to fight for the Union. In August 1861 Rawlins was asked to join Grant's staff and was promoted to Captain. In this position he looked after the General, keeping on him about his pledge of temperance and keeping away many who would distract or tempt Grant.
Join us as we learn more about this fascinating man, how he kept Grant on the straight and narrow and what happened to him as the war dragged on.

Sevastopol, THE siege of the Crimean War and the focus of much of the mythology surrounding the conflict. Sevastopol became not only a strategic point important to both sides during the war, but a symbol of the war itself. The Russians looked to capitalize on a successful defense of the port city, while the Allies on forcing it's capitulation and opening said port to their fleets.

For our follow-up Quarter 2, Pat and Matt are joined once again by the Curator of the Concord Museum, David Wood. David took us through the coming of the Revolution at the beginning of the quarter and all the way through the fighting at Lexington & Concord. With the forces of King George III back in Boston, the colonial militias that had rallied against them had the garrison trapped. The Siege of Boston had begun.
This often overlooked aspect of the American Revolution, was the last major conflict in Massachusetts during the war and it happened right at the beginning! The Siege of Boston saw not only the loss of a major Crown foothold in the New England colonies, but also the rise of a new commander for colonial forces, George Washington. Unimpressed with the scattered, ragtag militia companies, Washington began the process of molding an army during an active military operation!
As with so many other sieges in history, the Siege of Boston was dirty, desperate and diseased. While both sides watched the lines waiting for reinforcements or relief, the day to day struggle just to stay alive soon became apparent. How long the forces of King George III could hold out waiting for reinforcements, was balanced against the transitory nature of the militias and the internal machinations of their commanders. The Shot Heard 'Round the World! It's a phrase we've all heard, but what does it mean and what is it referring to? What drove the colonies, particularly the New England colonies, to take up arms against Great Britain is a twisting tail and one that was not necessarily supposed to lead to independence. While tensions between the colonies and England had been on the rise for years, most colonists still considered themselves Englishmen and thus due the rights thereof. This mindset began to change however following the British raid out of Boston to capture stockpiled supplies. This first clash of the war set into motion things very few of the participants could have imagined, embarrassing an Empire and inspiring a loose confederation of colonies. The second half of Season 2 gets under way with a great conversation with our very good friend, Rob Ambrose. Rob is a Park Ranger who wears many different hats for Fort Frederick State Park, which is the site of the French and Indian War era stone fortification known as Fort Frederick. About 20 miles west of Hagerstown, Maryland and just a mile off of the Rt. 70 exit at Big Pool & Indian Springs, is the location of one of the coolest historical sites you likely never have heard of... well... WE ARE ABOUT TO CHANGE ALL THAT!
Rob was gracious enough to bring to podcast life his living history program that he puts on annually known as "One Fort, Three Wars." Built by the English during the mid 1750s, Rob takes us through the old stone forts history and its experience as "edge of the world," fort through the French and Indian war, its use as a prison (think Andersonville from the American Civil War) during the American Revolution, and as a place for Federal soldiers to loosely use and harass Confederate troops and cavalry across the Potomac River on and off during the American Civil War!
