Have you ever thought about the meaning of the word "health"? Interestingly, it can be defined in many different ways by many different people. The more I think about health, the more I realize it is difficult to define what it is without considering what it is not. This is not a discussion on unhealthy habits but an examination of the mindset surrounding health. It is important to understand what health is not as we head into the holidays, a season where for many, the desire for or pursuit of physical health may be on hold.

We often focus on being nice and kind to others, but do we extend ourselves the same courtesy. We are applauded for being our own worst critic, but what is that doing to your mindset? How is that helping you to achieve your goals? While we have to be able to motivate ourselves, we must also give ourselves grace. I hope this episode encourages you to intentionally address and clear the limiting thoughts that are holding you hostage and pushing your further away from your God-given purpose!
**And then God answered: “Write this.
Write what you see.
Write it out in big block letters
so that it can be read on the run.
This vision-message is a witness
pointing to what’s coming.
It aches for the coming—it can hardly wait!
And it doesn’t lie.
If it seems slow in coming, wait.
It’s on its way. It will come right on time.

The life expectancy for all Americans has decreased as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even more striking is that the decrease for Black Americans is 3 times that of White Americans. On social media, I saw some disparaging remarks about the focus on race when discussing these topics. Even in such a racially tense climate, we are still largely uncomfortable with this topic, and it is often dismissed. It is time we have a frank and ongoing discussion about the very real effect race has on our well-being.

Our bodies are always communicating with us. But, do we listen? In this series, "Abnormalizing Illness", I discuss some common symptoms that we have (signals that we receive) but largely ignore, and call "normal". It is far from normal to feel bad or be ill all of the time. This episode will focus on the gastrointestinal tract, which plays a large role in our exposures and what nutrients are extracted from the foods we eat.

"When "I" is replaced with "we" even illness becomes wellness." - Malcolm X
Embarking on a journey to wellness is an absolutely necessary investment in yourself, your family, your purpose and your future. In this episode, I define wellness, illness and health and how they intersect. I also discuss the mindset we often have concerning wellness, or lack thereof, and how to adjust the way we view our most valuable asset. Let's stop expecting to be ill and instead embrace our best health, no matter where we are starting from.

It has been about 10 months since the first reported case of COVID-19 hit the United States. In June of 2020, Pivot & Bloom was launched with the first episode "The Syndemic", discussing the intersection between COVID-19, racial health disparities/injustices, and chronic disease. This episode is a follow up on "The Syndemic", and a call to action. Chronic disease is only getting worse and in combination with COVID-19, is claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans. Within this statistic lies the sobering reality that Blacks are 2-3 times more likely to lose their lives. It is imperative that we start to think about the future and how we will all care for our bodies and minds going forward.

When we are constantly in fight or flight mode, it wreaks havoc on our bodies and our minds. In this episode, I explain how anxiety presents itself and give an actionable acronym - REST - to help you build ways to manage your anxiety and stress.

What do you do when your life and health change in an instant? In this highly-anticipated episode (part 2 of a 2-part series), my friend Andre Wallace shares his journey with kidney failure, and the many lessons he learned along the way. He walked diligently with God on some of his darkest days, while also actively transforming his health. The transparency and eloquence he lends to his journey will surely touch hearts and change lives.
African Americans constitute more than 35% of all patients in the U.S. receiving dialysis for kidney failure, but only represent 13.2% of the overall U.S. population. (www.kidney.org)
Simply, there is not enough outrage over the danger posed to the health of Blacks, especially Black men, by chronic disease. While there are a multitude of complex factors at play, the fact remains that Black men are dying at an alarming rate from the complications of diabetes and high blood pressure.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), or kidney failure, is often the result of years of uncontrolled blood pressure and/or diabetes. (Though there are other causes, these are the most common, by far.) When it starts, much like high blood pressure, it is largely silent. Our bodies are very resilient and will maintain our kidney function, the filtration system for the blood, at all costs. Accordingly, many people with kidney disease do not have severe (or recognizable) symptoms until it is very advanced and they are in need of dialysis.

When reflecting on our health and wellness, we rarely think of the effect of the environment that surrounds us. In this episode, I had a very transparent discussion with my first guest and fellow podcaster (host of "Air Health Our Health"), Dr. Erika Maria Moseson. She is a pulmonologist (a doctor who specializes in the lungs) and critical care specialist (a doctor who specializes in caring for patients in the intensive care unit). I learned a ton from her about environmental health disparities, as well as the importance of physician advocacy and involvement in creating the policies that affect our health. Dr. Moseson's motto is, "Don't light things on fire and breathe them into the lungs." You are certain to gain a new perspective on many topics pertaining to a very simple and basic need - clean air.
