Television/radio host and author Dr. Debra Peppers, shares how she overcame her own personal struggles of being 100 pounds overweight, depressed, and even suicidal, so that you too can be equipped and prepared to receive God‘s love, forgiveness, strength, and joy for living each day. Learn how you can apply God‘s word to change areas in your life, face the unknown trials of each day and be equipped for the great future that God has for you. Debra uses her life examples, sprinkled with humor, of being a high school dropout to PhD to Teacher of the Year and from Hall of Shame to Hall of Fame. Life is short and it’s time for you to have joy for your journey.
Everyone has occasional disagreements with someone. But when it’s your spouse you must learn how to quickly resolve the issue – even if you are total “opposites.” Besides, making up is much more fun!

Moses was about to lead his people out of captivity and into The Promised Land; but how would the Death Angel know which of the babies to spare? God had Moses tell the people they were to sprinkle blood on the doorposts of their homes, and death would PASSOVER that house! God was sparing his people so they could fulfill their future destiny. Do 70 years or 50 years or any number of years in a relationship represent unconditional love? Although we celebrate years of marriage, I have seen too many that often stayed together for the wrong reasons and often wish they hadn’t. Because I do so much work in teaching ladies in jail, and being part of women’s groups, and because my husband and I have a ministry, I often hear people describe me as being “religious.” Although I do have a religion, I detest being called religious, because so many so-called religious people have been cruel, evil, and have even killed in the name of “religion.” We don’t have to only look at Biblical times when the Pharisees and Sadducees were against each other, and against Christianity, but we also saw what happened among nations and other religions as well. And certainly today is not any better. We are even at war in our own country among believers and non believers as well as various religions and even among denominations. When I was young I never thought about why an old person was mean. I just knew that my friends and I would try to get even with them, tease them, even harm their grass or flowers when we had a chance. How horrible to even think we did that now. We didn’t stop to think they were crabby because they didn’t have family or friends, or perhaps because they were in pain, or even because they had perhaps had a recent tragedy in their life! All we knew was the way they treated us, so we wanted revenge. Now that we are the “old” people so to speak, we must constantly strive to not be mean and crabby, to not be constant complainers, and to always remember what it was like to be small children with crabby old people being mean to us. The Golden Rule applies to ALL ages – “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!”

Self sabotage is the term used when we knowingly or unknowingly hurt or harm ourselves – verbally, emotionally, or even physically. Sometimes we are not even aware of the harm we are doing, but when we are we need to make a commitment to try to become more conscious of the fact that we are doing so and then just STOP IT! When we are putting ourselves down, or jeopardizing our own health, we are also hurting those who love us, especially God who created us. How can we be useful to Him when we are spending our time coming against ourselves? This old world has enough harm and hurt in it in the outside circumstances of life without adding to those negative elements. Let us vow to make an effort to not harm others, and also to not add harm to ourselves.

Having travelled in all 50 states and 65 foreign countries, I have had more adventures and taken more risks than 95% of the world’s population. From scubing diving in Australia’s great-barriar reef to staying a week in the Okavango Delta in Africa where we had to sign a “attack by lion waiver,” my husband and I have chosen to take many somewhat dangerous risks. But unfortunately, I also took the worst risks of my lifetime as a teen-ager. Also unfortunately I would have fit right in with those teens today who seem to be risking and throwing away their lives. We all say, “If I had it to do over…” about things in our lives, and mine certainly would be not to live those horrible years drinking, toking, smoking and hurting my family deeply. But in the end, those negative risks were turned into posive results when I became a teacher f0or at-risk kids, and even help start an Alternative School. I recently tried to get a friend of mine to take a risk, step out in faith and allow his life to be better in the final chapters, than in the beginning. Most of us have dealt with depression to a certain degree, either personally or through a friend or family member. Often there is a chemical imbalance which may be the source of the depression, and it is so common to feel “sad” or down and out, even depressed when going through the illness or death of a friend or loved one. But what do you when you just can’t get rid of those feelings, and seemingly have no current reason or situation for which to remain depressed. I recently went out of state to say good-bye to a loved one who had chosen to not have life-sustaining measures taken. But then she changed her mind. She had no idea as her illness progressed she would have no food, except that given in her stomach tube, no ability to speak or write or text, and she had made no friends and had no other family to come visit her. It certainly made me re-think the specifics of my will and end of life directive. For some of us, the end will be better than the beginning and we will not only have new life – but life eternal!

I love the idea of using the PIES to chart to help balance one’s life, because it makes such sense. The P stands for the physical parts of our life, the I stands for the intellectual E is for emotional and the S represents the spiritual side of life. In speaking and teaching I include two more slices of the pie, one represents family time and one represents either your work time or school. We all know that our day is not broken into such nice little slices of pies so to speak, but at least it gives us a perspective and view of where we spend our most time and energy. In our early years obviously we spend more time in school and as young adults working in the home or our professions. But can we really compartmentalize our spiritual, intellectual and emotional? Obviously there is much overlapping but we can ask ourselves which “slice of our pie“ is most neglected? For me, it was the spiritual. Eventually every aspect of my life began to change, and even now in retirement I asked God to refine any areas that are still lacking.

Dr. Peppers recently was invited to speak at a women’s conference on the topic of Gracefully Broken. Using several examples of people in she knows, including her own story, she also shared people in scripture who were “broken,” before they could find the real purpose and fulfillment of their lives. Dr. Peppers then called a young girl named Avery from the audience to come to the front to help her with the analogy of a butterfly coming out of the cocoon. Having brought silky butterfly wings that can be worn, Dr. Peppers told how when she was little she was very overweight and called “Fatso” at school. Avery added that she also had people call her names or make fun of her in the past. The audience was asked how many of them had something similar in their past, and all hands went up! But those trials and struggles in our past are the very things that made us stronger, more resilient and more able to be used by God to help others!

But a friend of mine challenged me to take 5 minutes at the beginning of each day – while I had coffee and breakfast (if I had time) to read one scripture and say a prayer. She told me to begin by thanking God for the good things in my life, pray for my family, friends, students and colleagues (even if in groups) and then tell Him my troubles and problems and ask for solutions (wisdom.) It was ritual at first but by the time I began to make it a routine I actually looked forward to, I found my day was a disaster if I didn’t take time to pray. I began to get myself off of my mind more, and actually have empathy and concern for those on my prayer list. Prayer didn’t necessarily change things, but it did change me. Whether it is laziness, apathy, or unfounded faith, we cannot make an excuse for not doing what we are told to do when facing the trials and tribulations in our life. We will all have them. I believe when we do our part and do what we know we should, then God will cover the rest. Whether we like the ending or not, at least we know we did what we were told and He is still sovereign to complete the rest. The first and last thing we are told to do is pray! We must pray for one another as well as for ourselves and help one another as well. What a joyous and meaningful life we have when we follow God’s way!

Dr. Peppers shares here the secret to finding true joy in spite of all that is happening around us. We will all experience pain and suffering in our lifetime, but even in the midst of these, there is a true difference between happiness and joy. Our happiness may indeed be dependent upon our circumstances. For instance, no one feels happy when dealing with the death of a loved one, or going through a severe illness. But even in the midst of these times, we can have the joy of the Lord, because He is there to comfort and shelter us, and we can even choose to praise God in the midst of our trials. It doesn’t change things, but it does change us! Whatever you are going through today my friend, stop and praise God in spite of your trials, and thank Him for His strength, which is your true source of joy.

Each of us has a mustard seed size of faith, and that is what gives us an ounce of hope – even when you feel hopeless. When I saw what my past had been, I knew part of my quest was to reach young people who were like I had been – the dropouts, those kicked out, and those who didn’t want to live. When we have an ounce of hope, we can be assured that down the road there will be healing and a glorious future. Debra lays out how to come to Christ, and accept the fact that without him we can do nothing, but all things through Him!

Debra shares her own personal testimony of growing up in a small town where everybody knew everybody - and she was the outcast. At 260 pounds, drinking, and drugging, and causing trouble with "the wrong crowd" Debra tells how she finally began to face her demons.
