Dave Guselli pays tribute to Olivia Newton-John.
Australian singer Olivia Newton-John, who gained worldwide fame as high-school sweetheart Sandy in the hit musical movie "Grease," died Monday, her family said. She was 73.
The entertainer, whose career spanned more than five decades, devoted much of her time and celebrity to charities after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992.
Newton-John "passed away peacefully at her ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends," said a statement from her husband John Easterling posted on her official social media accounts. (AFP)

New UK travel ban to SA scuppers Damon Beard's first trip 'home'. Britain has announced it is banning travel from six southern African countries, including South Africa, after SA detected a new Covid-19 variant with a large number of mutations. It is suspending flights from noon today. Britain will also require anyone arriving from banned countries from 4:00 am on Sunday to quarantine in hotels. The news means that East Coast Gold's 2pm to 6pm weekday presenter Damon Beard will have to cancel his first holiday 'home', planned for mid-December. He chatted to Gordon Graham about the impact of the news in Gordon's More Music Breakfast Show this morning.

He is no stranger to radio and will bring his own unique brand of radio to East Coast Gold. Gordon Graham chatted to Guy McDonald this morning ahead of his new show which starts tomorrow.

The mention of the band Cinema stirs up memories of the 80's and 90's – venues such as Gold Reef City, The Village Green, The Thunderdome, Limelight, Chillers and rock concerts and festivals all around the country. Cinema became a household name during this time thanks to their debut hit single, “My Kind of Girl”. The band went on to release seven albums in total and achieved 12 Top 10 radio singles and numerous awards.
Cinema is the definitive band of South African 80’s and 90’s popular music. It consisted of Jarrod Aston on vocals, Mike Todd on guitar, Chris Frank on keyboards and bass and Larry Rose on drums.
East Coast Gold's Dave Guselli chats to Jarrod Aston about the band's heyday; how they almost landed a major international contract and whether there are any plans for a Cinema reunion.
Who remembers top Durban band from the 1980s, Equinox? The band consisted of Gerry Connor on lead vocals, John 'Jordi' Jordan on keyboards and backing vocals, Peter 'The Greek' on guitar/bass and backing vocals - and Francois Hardy on drums and backing vocals. Equinox performed at the Royal Hotel (in the Tavern) for three years (five nights a week), then recorded their original album 'Undercover Lover' with David Gresham Records in Johannesburg. This led to them touring around South Africa performing at big concerts before returning to Durban to perform at the Gangplank at The Wheel for a year.

We caught up with two of the organisers, Jarrod Aston from Cinema and Glenda Sixel from Clout ,and they shared the vision behind the event and what they hope to achieve in raising money for this much-loved industry of music professionals.

International star, Leo Sayer, known for seventies hits like 'More than I can say', 'When I need you' and 'You Make Me Feel Like Dancing' - is in South Africa for performances in Cape Town and Pretoria this long weekend. He's told East Coast Gold's Gordon Graham that he's just started composing new songs, adding that the creative juices are flowing.
"I just want to keep on working. I'm 71-years-old but I'm still feeling as creative as ever," he told Gordon on the More Music Breakfast Show today. "The ideas are flowing. I've got a huge backlog of songs that still haven't been recorded. I'm just starting on some new stuff at the moment."
"I think if you feel it in your heart that you can do something, and provide something, you can do it. And honestly it doesn't matter if it sells millions or just pleases a few people. The most important thing is to be creative and to get it out there. And living in Australia I have the template now to do that."
Leo moved from England to Sydney in 2005.
Gordon asked Leo how his Afrikaans is, given that he's performing at the Christmas Spectacular (Kersfees Skouspel) this coming weekend.
"Oh man, I'm absolutely terrible," says Leo."'Lekker, lekker' - that's about it. I'm terrible but I'm really honoured that the Afrikaans fans have always had a soft spot for Leo Sayer and I'm very honoured by that. It's fantastic. The world's a small place, isn't it."
Leo added that next time he's in South Africa, he hopes to perform in Durban. "I really want to come to Durban. It's been a long time!"
Breakfast host Gordon Graham had fellow East Coast Gold presenter Jane Linley-Thomas on the show to talk about what it's been like to be part of East Coast Radio's new digital radio station. Jane says the music on East Coast Gold evokes such amazing memories of special times. But she's also found that it resonates with her young children. "The whole house was singing," she tells Gordon.
