The William Humphreys Art Gallery (WHAG) in Kimberley is pleased to present its 2026 Duo Exhibition, featuring Tears of a Man by Neo Theku and HUE(man) Imprints – At Your Fingertips by Genevieve Clarke. Drawn from a pool of outstanding finalists from the 2026 WHAG Artist-in-Residence Programme, the exhibition forms part of WHAG's Youth Month Development Programme, an initiative dedicated to nurturing emerging artistic talent and creating professional exhibition opportunities for young practitioners. The Odeion in Bloemfontein invites music lovers to join them on the 27th of August for Sankofa – An Experience of African Musical Entanglements, which promises to be a vibrant evening celebrating the richness and evolution of African music. Acclaimed trumpeter, composer, and ethnomusicologist Joseph Kunnuji, Senior Lecturer in Ethnomusicology and African Music at the University of the Free State joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat with all the details.

The NWU Gallery is proud to present Metanoia a curatorial project organized by the students of the North-West University, History of Arts Honors Degree from 12 August to 11 September 2026. Drawing from the North-West University’s Permanent Art Collection, the Metanoia exhibition boasts an immersive curation of the human experience, showcasing over 20 artists and artworks, including paintings, sculptures and mixed-media pieces. Nobuhle Xaba is one of the curators of the exhibition and she joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about the transformation that can happen in one’s heart through art.

For over 40 years, the Standard Bank Young Artist Awards have identified and celebrated South African artists who are pushing boundaries and shaping contemporary discourse in the arts. The 2026 Standard Bank Young Artist for Visual Art – Bronwyn Katz is proudly from Kimberley and joins Cat van der Merwe in the OFM Art Beat to talk about her time at the National Arts Festival which was recently held in Makhanda.

Umzila (The Legacy) is an exhibition that explores instrument-making as an artistic and archival practice through the Xhosa musical bow, uhadi. Born in Nyanga, Cape Town, Thandeka Mfinyongo is an African musician, scholar, and lecturer in African Music and Ethnomusicology at North-West University. Thandeka joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about her heritage as artist. Umzila is on until 11 September at the NWU Gallery in Potchefstroom.

The Choral Celebration Network Foundation (CCNF) aims to elevate harmony within the South African choral and orchestral industry through non-competitive and neutral performance opportunities. Die Klein Prinsie vertel die verhaal van die vriendskap tussen ’n loods en ’n blonde seuntjie wat begin met die vraag: “Teken vir my ’n skaap?” Die Prinsie het waarskynlik van Asteroïede B612 af na die aarde gekom. Sy reis deur die heelal word vertel deur die akteur Chris van Niekerk (Beste Vrystaatse Kunstenaar 2017 vir hierdie rol) en geïllustreer deur ’n volkoepelvertoning in die Naval Hill-planetarium deur Leon Snyman. FEED/FLESH/BUFFERING is ’n eksperimentele, interdissiplinêre uitvoeringsinstallasie wat die emosionele, sielkundige en ekologiese gevolge ondersoek van die lewe binne ’n digitaal-verweefde wêreld. Die werk is gestruktureer rondom drie kernkonseptuele pilare: FEED verteenwoordig die algoritmiese stroom van inhoud en inligting; FLESH verken die toestand van versadiging; en BUFFERING ondersoek gekompromitteerde aandagvermoëns en fragmentasie. Dit nooi gehore in na ’n gekureerde omgewing wat uit e-afval gebou is, waar beweging, klank en liggame binne ’n digitaal-verweefde werklikheid met mekaar in wisselwerking tree.

Ná ’n kort draai by ’n verlate gebou bevind ’n familie hulself vasgevang in ’n onontkombare nagmerrie. Hulle word dieper in ’n doolhof van geheime en skaduwees getrek en moet veg om te oorleef tydens ’n nag van terreur wat dreig om hul liefde uitmekaar te skeur. Maar met elke nuwe openbaring begin die lyn tussen rede en waansin vervaag en dié wat eens vertrou is, word vyande wat binne die duisternis van die doolhof skuil.

’n Vertelling van Elvis Presley se lewe waarin sy mees bekende treffers gevier word, met dansers van Mzansi Ballet en sangers Frederick Fourie en Patience Mahema. Ballet en rock-’n-roll word gemeng in hierdie ballet wat die kompleksiteite van Presley se persoonlike lewe ondersoek, met verwysing na sy militêre diens, wat in die titel Private Presley weerklink, en sy hegte verhoudings met veral die vroue wat sy lewe en musiek sterk beïnvloed het.

Huis van Sand vertel van Babs en Sandy wat leef op die leftovers van hul verlede. Hul klein karavaan is ’n pondokpaleis vol geheime – hul eie sandkasteel. Sandy het haar swerwersbestaan langs die N7 verruil vir ’n nuwe begin by Rodney, die bottel gebêre om Babs groot te maak. Maar daarmee saam het groeipyne en erfsondes gekom. Babs probeer haar herinneringe afwas, maar die stofstorms van die verlede haal haar telkens in. Hul onthou neem die gehoor op ’n verbeeldingsvlug waar grense begin vervaag.

‘n Nuwe Afrikaanse toneelstuk deur Nico Scheepers ondersoek die brose grense tussen familie, geheue en oorlewing. Wanneer Stefan onverwags hoor dat sy ouers op pad is – ná jare se halfsinne en ontwykende kontak – word sy noukeurig gekonstrueerde lewe stilweg ontwrig. Dit is ’n skerpsinnige en herkenbare blik op erfenis … nie net van grond of besittings nie, maar van liefde, skuld en verwyt. Curator at the NWU Gallery, Sheryl Msomi joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about the latest group exhibition hosted in Potchefstroom. The 1976 youth uprising is 50 years ago this year and this exhibition brings together a reflection on the past through the lens of today’s youth. If the youth of 1976 contested the classroom, then fifty years later the artists brought together in Repair of the Present contest the archive. This exhibition is on until 24 July.

A major solo exhibition by South African artist Elias Ditaba Sewape, titled Ditaba - 80 Albert Street, is on display at the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley and brings together an expansive body of work spanning over four decades. Chief Curator, Chepape Makgato joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to share his excitement about this truly special exhibition which is on until the 31st of July.

Oliewenhuis Art Museum presents Uhambo Lwemi Moya (The Journey of My Spirit), a solo exhibition by South African artist Quincy Mbuso Hlongwa. This exhibition presents a compelling body of figurative paintings that explore themes of identity, personal reflection, and the emotional landscapes of contemporary life. Mbuso joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about this full-circle moment for him as artist. The exhibition is on until 28 June.

Die Raad van die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns het onlangs met groot genoeë die wenners van die gesogte Akademiepryse vir 2026 aan gekondig. Die Vrystaat Kunstefees het die goeie nuus gedeel dat Naòmi Morgan die SA Akademieprys vir Vertaalde Werk ontvang het vir haar vertaling van Samuel Beckett se ikoniese boek ‘Ons wag vir Godot’ wat in 2024 as produksie gedebuteer het. Naòmi het die oorspronklike teks se diepte en absurditeit met ‘n fyn balans oorgedra en die toekenning is werklik 'n besonderse prestasie. Sy sluit by Yolanda Maartens aan in die OFM Kunsteklop om te vertel hoe vertaling werk en wat dit vir Afrikaans beteken.

We know Nianell as an angel-voiced superstar but behind the platinum albums and bright lights, she has been walking a path of profound quite dismantling. She joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat, not to sing the songs we all know and love but to talk about the songs she has discovered in her silence. In her new book: A song that’s yet unsung, she shares a raw, multi-sensory journey through fame, heartbreak and spiritual awakening. Her book also includes 30 new songs that help tell her story.

The NWU Gallery in Potchefstroom invites you to “Fragments of what we carry” a solo exhibition by Lerato Motaung. It features various second-hand luggage pieces giving them new artistic and poetic expression. Lerato joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat and talks about memories as fragments and explains why art can take you on a journey of your own. This exhibition is on until the 24th of July.

Congratulations to Siyabonga Gans a learner in Grade 11 at St Andrews School in Bloemfontein, whose art work won a special prize at this year’s Bloem Show. His art work was on display during this year’s exhibition and the OFM Art Beat absolutely needed to find out more about this talented young man. Siyabonga joins Yolanda Maartens to talk about what art means to him and what he plans for his future.

The theatre production “Healing of Hearts”, featuring choirs, acting, mime, and dancers, is centred on delivering a message that healing is possible and available for every heart in every house, family, and community across the nations of the world. This community project involves children and adults from all over the Mangaung area and is coordinated by Creare Training Centre. Yolanda Maartens is joined by Creare Principal, Jolene du Plessis and Township Schools Coordinator, Kabelo Mokoena in the OFM Art Beat to share details about the production taking place at the Sand de Plessis theatre in Bloemfontein from 21 to 23 May. The Free State Symphony Orchestra (FSSO) invites audiences to an unforgettable evening of orchestral music titled Music Inspires Music, taking place on Saturday, 16 May 2026 at 19:30 at the Odeion in Bloemfontein. Under the baton of acclaimed conductor Alexander Walker, the orchestra will present a vibrant, stylistically diverse programme featuring celebrated Bloemfontein double bassist Ruan Baartman as soloist. Vanjaar vat Protea Boekhuis weer hande met die internasionale prenteboekillustreeder kompetisie: Picture This! Dit is ‘n fantasiese geleentheid en Reon Erasmus van Protea Boekhuis sluit by Yolanda Maartens aan met al die besonderhede. Anmari van der Westhuizen is an associate professor and head of the Odeion String Quartet based at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein. She teams up with top South African pianist, Nicolene Gibbons to bring you an evening dedicated to French music on the 7th of May. Samantha Durrant 1st violinist of the Odeion String Quartet joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to invite audiences to join in the celebrations this year which starts off with a programme which includes two guest performers. The programme is filled with South African sounds as well as Dvorak’s Piano Quintet number 2 and is being presented on the 23rd of April in the Odeion in Bloemfontein and on the 24th of April at the Clarens Arts Festival.

Acclaimed South African pianist, Peter Cartwright and British violinist, Rupert Marshall-Luck bring their successful concert to Central South Africa on the 16th of April. The duo have been collaborating for quite a few years and look forward to share their approach to piano and violin, with the audience at the Odeion in Bloemfontein. Peter Cartwright joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about the programme titled: Lyric Landscapes which features compositions by Russian, British and South African musicians. On the 10th of April you are invited to “Love, Passion and Fate” as the FSSO present an evening filled with the music from Tchaikovsky hosted by the Sand du Plessis theatre in Bloemfontein. Concert Master for this programme, Sharon de Kock, joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat as she also shares that the orchestra will be travelling to Pretoria with this repertoire.

The 2026 WHAG Artist-in-Residence, Tshepo Bopape joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat together with Curatorial Assistant, Malikah Meyer. The William Humphreys Art Gallery (WHAG) is pleased to present Valued Materials – A Work In Progress until the 30th of April showcasing the works created during Tshepo’s time in residency. He draws comparison between the city of Gold, Johannesburg and the diamond city, Kimberley through art.

The 5th annual Clarens Arts Festival takes place in Clarens from 24–27 April 2026. Chairman of the festival board, Manie van Schalkwyk joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about their exciting festival program which includes theatre, literature, workshops, and kiddies events, there’s a spark of inspiration for the whole family. Dr Joseph Kunnuji is the Resident Ethnomusicologist lecturer at the Odeion School of Music at the University of the Free State and his zest for life is clear in his music and his energy towards teaching others about music from around the world. In his collaborative album with Mlungisi Gegana they bring music from West Africa and South Africa together. Marabi meets highlife is available on all streaming platforms. Joseph joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about this album and to share a bit of music live on his trumpet!

Traditional musical forms are reimagined in this collaborative production to reflect contemporary ecological crises, with themes of loss and resilience. Each movement unfolds like a chapter in a story: the urgency of the present, the consequences of inaction, and the possibilities of transformation. More than a performance, In the Blink of an Eye is a call to action. Composer Arthur Feder joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about the privilege to experience his music being brought to life by the Odeion String Quartet, pianist Cézarre Strydom, clarinettist Danré Strydom and dancer Jeanette Ziady. ‘In the blink of an eye’ is on at the Odeion in Bloemfontein on the 19th of March and tickets are available from Quicket.

Ebeth Wilson, Uitvoerende Vervaardiger en Verhoogbestuurder vir die produksie so wel as Jaco Bezuidenhout, Musiekregisseur vir ‘Moses…geroep!’ sluit by Yolanda Maartens aan die OFM Kunsteklop om oor die ATKV-tak Gemeenskapsteater inisiatief te gesels. ‘Moses..,geroep!’ volg die epiese Bybelse reis van Moses — van sy wonderbaarlike redding as baba wat tussen die biesies versteek is, tot sy grootwordjare as ’n prins in die paleis van Egipte, en uiteindelik sy lewensveranderende ontmoeting met God by die brandende bos. The Magareng Public Art Project is now in its final phase and is located on the N12/N18 outside Warrenton in the Northern Cape. Vuyo Mayesa is the Lead Curator and Founder of the initiative and joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about the importance of public art, the accountability that lies with the entire community to uphold the park and also to appeal to residents to get involved and support their volunteers and artists.

The “Because we are” exhibition engages with African ethical frameworks that position humanness as inherently relational and features the works of Tony Luza and Daniel Tladi. The exhibition has been curated by Sheryl Msomi and will be open to the public until the 20th of March. Both Tony and Daniel join Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about their personal experiences that they share in this exhibition and a friendship that spans many years.

Conductor Yasuo Shinozaki was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1968. He has been involved with orchestras around the world and has often graced the stages of South Africa as well. Yasuo will be conducting the Free State Symphony Orchesra on the 14th of March at the Odeion in Bloemfontein. Joining him on stage is mezzo soprano Violina Anguelov. Yasuo joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about the program of the night as well as to share what he has learned through his travels over the years when conducting international orchestras.

Joining Yolanda Maartens on OFM is world-renowned pianist Ida Pelliccioli who will be on stage at the Odeion in Bloemfontein on the 5th of March. Transcriptions reveal the musical thinking of a composer who is moved and inspired by the artistry of other composers, while recognizing that the musical substance of the underlying works is not static but capable of constant reworking and evolution. Ida explains why transcriptions are experiencing a bit of a renaissance and what the program will be at the Odeion. She also shares her love for South Africa and our wines. This exhibition celebrates four extraordinary artists whose works form an integral part of Oliewenhuis Art Museum's Permanent Collection. The theatre production “Healing of Hearts” which features choirs, acting, mime and dance groups is centred on delivering a message that healing is possible and available for every heart in every house, family and community across the nations of the world. It is a community project involving children and adults from all over the Mangaung area and is coordinated by Creare Training Centre. Ester Jones and John-Dean Knell joined Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about the auditions being held for this year’s production and to invite young and old to get involved in their production which will be showcased in May 2026.

Oliewenhuis Art Museum is excited to host the exhibition Beyond Walls: Emerging Contemporary Voices, curated from the ArtbankSA Collection. Unlike traditional museum collections confined to institutional walls, ArtbankSA operates as a dynamic platform that circulates emerging artists' work through leasing and sales to collectors and the general public. This exhibition captures the essence of this fluid model, presenting works that exist in active dialogue with diverse spaces and communities. Beyond Walls reveals urgent themes coursing through contemporary South African art: intergenerational knowledge transmission, cultural custodianship, memory's contested territories, and identity's continuous formation. This landmark exhibition at the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley, celebrates more than three decades of Sophie Peters’ visual storytelling tracing her journey from the streets of Johannesburg’s inner city to her recognition as one of South Africa’s most resilient and spiritually grounded visual artists. Odeion School of Music students, at the University of the Free State, frequently participate in performances, competitions, and events. Kilmany-Jo Liversage creates portraits that sit at the blurry boundary between fine art and urban art. Adopting the urban art language allows her to update, renew and challenge the conventions of painting, though her rendering of female subjects is inspired by Renaissance era portraiture. Her latest solo exhibition PREKARIA, is on at Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein until the 23rd of November. Ballads of the British Isles is a showcase of some of the most iconic ballads from the Brisith Isles performed by local Bloemfontein artists Diandra Steenekamp, Zani Ludick, Maretha Krige and Adri Maryke van Heerden. The performance on the 21st of November at the Naval Hill Planetarium, will feature the beloved Bloemfontein Scottish Bagpipe Band and all proceeds will go towards the funding of the organ installation in the Cathedral of St Andrew & St Michael. Stefan Hundt, Curator of the Sanlam Art Collection, says this is a memorable exhibition that celebrates the rich history and heritage of Basotho blankets and the shared stories they represent. Showcasing the unique and engaging designs of traditional and contemporary Basotho Blankets, the exhibition, ‘Sutha Ke Fete’, runs until 15 February 2026 in the Reservoir Gallery at Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein and is presented by Sanlam in collaboration with the National Museum. An afternoon of Tchaikovsky, Marquina, Barber, Zimmer and Buble promises to showcase the talents of the youth involved with the Free State Symphony Orchestra in Bloemfontein. Dance Pages is a flagship dance festival held annually in Kimberley in the Northern Cape. It's dedication to the arts and community development has made a significant impact on the lives of many young dancers and choreographers across the region. The festival was founded to create a performance and experiential platforms for our dancers in peri-urban, rural and underserved communities. Letlhogonolo Nche, Curator of Dance Pages, joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to highlight this year’s festival program and to invite those individuals from the dance industry to participate from 22 to 25 October 2025.

The PANGEA STRING QUARTET (PSQ) is a Johannesburg-based chamber ensemble which strives to inspire and engage audiences by presenting key works in the string quartet repertoire. Serge Cuco is principal violinist and joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about their special program planned for their performance as well as sharing his message for those who consider violin as their instrument of choice. Pianist, Paul Ferreira joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about the production “Unmindful of the Roses” being presented at NG Vyfhoek in Potchefstroom on the 14th of October. He is joined by mezzo soprano, Teresa de Wit and oboe player Johan Ferreira. They celebrate 150 years of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.

Concert Master for the night’s performance, Sharon de Kock joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to introduce audiences to acclaimed Taiwanese conductor Ho Chung Yeh who is leading the symphony orchestra. She also shares information about the two soloists of the night and their instruments. Luzanne Eigelaar from the FSSO shares the ticket information and invites the Taiwanese community of the Free State to come support this night of premieres, classical works and contemporary treasures.

This unusual curatorial approach creates fresh visual narratives by combining historical handbags with contemporary and classical artworks. The English cellist, Michael Kevin Jones, studied Music Performance piano/cello at the Royal College of Music (London). He was also a student of Niel Immelman (piano). While a student at the Royal College of Music, he was chosen to play for the Royal family and awarded a German government scholarship for further study in Köln. Kamohelo Tsotetsi and Segomotso Shupinyaneng are both alumni from the North West University Music Conservatory and have travelled all over the world with their incredible voices. They studied together and both spent time performing on stages in London. They fell in love with London and have decided to bring that love back to their home soil, Potchefstroom. ‘From London with love’ is on at the NG Church Vyfhoek on the 26th of August and tickets are available from Quicket.

Bulumko Mbete, the 2023 Absa L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award winner is bringing her solo exhibition “Like The Sky I’ve Been Too Quiet” to the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley. Oliewenhuis Art Museum is pleased to announce the opening of Sojourn, a compelling exhibition exploration of transience and transformation in contemporary South African art. With the support of the Barney Simon Trust, the Market Theatre Laboratory offers one residency a year to provide a space for theatre-makers to develop a new work, investigate artistic process, and take creative risks. The artist will receive a grant of R90 000 to subsidize their project costs, including their creative team, cast, archiving and materials. In addition, the residency project will be given 8 weeks of studio space, access to the Ramolao Makhene Theatre for one week to present the outcomes of the residency (with a technician), access to the internet and some IT resources, and printing. The Romantic Soul is a program of German Lied consisting of two sets of art songs by some of the most significant Lied composers of the Romantic era. Robert Schumann’s Liederkreis Op. 39 typically depicts the sympathy and interrelatedness of nature with the human soul, whereas the subjective intimacy of Gustav Mahler’s Rückert–Lieder Op. 44 address the familiar Romantic theme of withdrawal into a secluded world of love, art and nature. This production will be on stage at the Odeion in Bloemfontein on the 30th of May. The exhibition 'Realigned' curated by selecting artworks from Oliewenhuis Art Museum’s Permanent Collection, The Art Bank of South Africa, and artefacts from the Collection Management and Library Department. Realigned features artists such as Leora Farber, Judy Woodborne, Lionel Abrahams, and Michael Selekane among many great South African artists. The aforementioned artists creatively and efficiently use a variety of subjects through their different visual expressions, making for an engaging viewing experience.

The exhibition draws its name, Realigned, from the concept of altering or restoring something to a different or previous position or condition. Exploring diverse themes such as roots, identity, mental well-being, body image, journey, tranquillity, and restoration, this annual showcase is curated by the interns of Oliewenhuis. Working under the mentorship of the Curator and Education Officer, these interns engage in a comprehensive training programme throughout their contract period.

As part of their developmental journey, the interns collaboratively shape every aspect of the exhibition, from conceptualising the theme to handpicking artworks, crafting the curatorial statement and press release, and finally curating and presenting the show in the designated exhibition space. This hands-on experience also provides them with practical skills in the professional handling and installation of artworks, contributing to their growth and expertise in the field.

Puppeteer Sarah Sease joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about “Papadi Park” and her passion for storytelling. The Free State Arts Festival congratulates the UJ Choir on their achievements at this year's KykNet Fiesta Awards. "Echoes of Heritage" was awarded the prize for "Best music-driven production: Outdoor or podium".

The William Humphreys Art Gallery is delighted to announce that Jonathan van der Walt, a visual artist based in Gqeberha, has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious Artist-In-Residency programme. This residency is dedicated to the memory of the renowned artist Dumisani Mabasa, who was a permanent resident artist at WHAG until his untimely passing.

The 2024 WHAG’s Artist-In-Residency call received a multitude of exceptional applications. However, Jonathan van der Walt’s innovative and compelling approach to sculpture appealed the most to WHAG’s curatorial strategy.

The Odeion School of Music Concert Series kicks off in Bloemfontein with a dive into the past, with The Diabelli Project: this programme recreates the editor Antonio Diabelli’s own biggest project, the publishing of several variations on his own Waltz that led Beethoven to compose his magnificent set of Variations Op. 120. The theme becomes here the very centre of the recital, and during the performance we meet several well-known composers in different stages of their life, from the young Liszt to the then very famous Hummel and Czerny, finishing with the masterwork of the late Beethoven.

Danilo Mascetti is an Italian pianist and fortepianist known for his intense performances and original programming, combining traditional repertoire with lesser known piano works. Equally at home with classical piano and fortepiano, since his debut with Pomeriggi Musicali Orchestra in the prestigious Sala Verdi (Milan), Danilo performs regularly all over Europe.

Prof Anmari van der Westhuizen van die FSSO sluit by Yolanda Maartens aan in die Kunsteklop om te gesels oor hul eerste uitvoering vir 2024 by die Odeion in Bloemfontein. "Music for All" is die eerste feesviering konsert van die 50 jaar herdenking van die Vrystaat Symfonie Orkes, gestig in 1974. Khayakazi Madlala is a final-year BA Music voice student at the NWU School of Music and was one of only 4 singers selected to participate in the 2024 Song Studio program presented at Carnegie Hall in New York annually towards the end of January. The program and masterclasses are hosted by the award winning soprano, Renée Fleming.

Oliewenhuis Art Museum is commemorating Reconciliation Day with an exhibition of artworks selected from the Oliewenhuis Art Museum Permanent Collection and the Collection of the Art Bank of South Africa.

All Oliewenhuis Art Museum and ArtbankSA staff members chose an artwork that personally resonates with their idea of reconciliation. Diverse artworks, expressing varied views and feelings regarding the theme, Moving Forward: Restoration, Unity and Peace, were selected, and created an exhibition that acknowledges the painful past of South Africa, but also shows how we can continue to restore and what unity and peace look like. Many of the artworks explore what we share and what brings us together as human beings. This exhibition is still on until the 4th of Feb 2024.

Violins for Peace aims to ensure their music programme aimed at young adults in the community of Bloemfontein not only provides them with valuable life-skills but also provides a platform of growth and fellowship.
Project Curator, Sharon de Kock joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about the privilege of investing time and passion in the youth of the Free State. She also explains what some of their needs are and how the community can assist them to expand the project.

Violins for Peace consists of 4 violin teachers who volunteer their time and knowledge to the children and young adults at St Patrick’s Church, Bloemfontein. These music sessions provide a positive outlet for the youth, creates a safe space and fosters trust among the students.

Further to this, the programme provides opportunities for the students to attend professional rehearsals and concerts.

The ARTi Gallery in Klerksdorp recently hosted its first annual national art competition with the vision of making dreams come true in Africa. Michelle Thöle-van Zyl, ARTi Gallery Programme Director, joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat.

Baie geluk aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat-koor vir hul uitstekende prestasie by die 5de Europese Koorspele 2023 in Norrköping, Swede. Onder die kundige leiding van hul dirigent, Werner Stander, en begelei deur Frelet de Villiers, het die koor merkwaardige sukses behaal.

Die koor se toewyding en uitsonderlike talent is erken met die gesogte Grand Prix of Nations Goue Medalje, wat 'n indrukwekkende telling van 87,2% behaal het. Verder het hulle in verskeie kategorieë geskitter en oorwinning geëis in die Evangelie, Geestelike, Musiek van Gees en Geloof, en Folklore a cappella segmente.

Hierdie merkwaardige prestasie is 'n bewys van die Universiteit van die Vrystaat-koor se verbintenis tot uitnemendheid en hul merkwaardige musikale vernuf. A massive congratulations to the NCSYO who won the Symphonia National Competition for bands and orchestras in George recently. CEO Nathan Carlo joins Mid-Morning Magic’s Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about this achievement.

They placed first in their category (Symphony Orchestras) as well as first place overall. A magnificent feat considering that this orchestra was only established in January of this year and competed against well established orchestras and ensembles.

Lesego Motsiri entered his video artwork titled Self Portrait in this year's New Breed Art Competition, a proud initiative of PH Attorneys. In deciding on the award, the judges were unanimous in their decision, indicating that this artwork was original, introspective and engaging. They commented on the intricacy of the thought process that had gone into the work and that it was definitely not something they had seen before and in their minds the clear winner of this year’s competition. His engaging artwork secured the grand prize of R50,000 and national recognition as the Overall Winner of the 2023 New Breed Art Competition. All the entries are currently on display at Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein until the 19th of November. These works are all for sale as well. The NWU Botanical Gardens Gallery is proud to present ANATOMICA BOTANICA ARCHITECTA, a group exhibition by five (5) North-West artists all based in Potchefstroom Amogelang Ngake; Elna Venter; Mpho Gorewang; Pieter Jooste; Sandro Trapani.

This exhibition will look at interpretations of arrangements of anatomical revisions, architectural inquiries, and the incorporation of indigenous or nonindigenous botanicals.

The exhibition is curated by Sandro Trapan and will run till the 31st of January 2024.

Chief Curator at the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley, Chepape Makgato joins Mid-Morning Magic’s Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about their current exhibition featuring the works of Peter E Clarke.
The William Humphreys Art Gallery (WHAG) is proud to present a solo exhibition of the renowned South African artist, writer and poet Peter E. Clarke (1929-2014), from the 29th of August to 31st of October 2023.

The exhibition, titled For Some the Pathway to Education Lies Between Thorns, showcases Clarke’s linocut and woodcut prints, rarest paintings and watercolour drawings that explore the themes of education, space and social justice.

“Eureka” is a journey delving into artisanal mining in Kimberley. Artisanal mining refers mainly to subsistence mining and miners who are not formally employed by mining companies. The exhibition consists of artworks by Prof. Janine Allen-Spies and Dr André Rose.

“We will Rise Again” …Rooted in Venda and practising in Johannesburg, NWU Gallery presents Nditsheni Managa’s first solo exhibition. The Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 terrorized the entire global space and had a negative effect on all forms of life including businesses. South Africa specifically, experienced harsh lockdown protocols in attempts to manage and prevent further spread of the grave disease. This had an undesirable effect on small and informal enterprises and businesses such as street vendors, hawkers, and simple service providers. Managa’s exhibition seeks to serve as a beacon of hope and highlight the resilience of informal sector practitioners. The selection of artworks encompasses a new body of work produced during the lockdown period in 2020. His chalk pastel drawings explore the adverse effects of the Covid-19 national lockdown in South Africa, on the informal sector and highlight the plight of the street vendors, hawkers, crafters, and simple service providers. His vivid striking palette evokes a sense of comradery with those small businesses affected and offers the viewer a glimpse of the hustling and bustling city life.

For most musicians the pandemic has gripped their industry to the point of suffocation. Arno Carstens has been creating art for the last 10 years but says that lockdown has fueled his creativity and has forced him to find his inner artist. He says that fans need to hold onto their paintbrushes as musicians can't wait to show how they have evolved during this time of restriction and uncertainty. The NAC has limited funding available to partner with organisations in the respective nine (9) provinces to disburse COVID-19 relief funds aimed at supporting arts organisations and individual artists affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and as a result could not implement their arts activities. The portfolio was inspired by Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes’ novel ‘Don Quixote’ published in two parts - part 1 in 1605 and part 2 in 1615. Illustrating selected quotations from Cervantes’ novel, which appear as printed sheets in the portfolio, it features the work of 16 artists and was printed at Atelier le Grand Village.

Atelier le Grand Village is a lithography studio located in the hamlet ‘le Grand Village’ in the Charente-Limousine area, in the south-west of France. The founder, Francis van der Riet, was born and grew up in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. He studied in Cape Town and has lived in France since 1988. The aim of the studio is to revive the art of lithography by inviting artists in residence from around the world.

Well known South African artists, namely, Diane Victor, Bambo Sibiya, Willem Boshoff, Jan Vermeiren, Leon de Bliquy, Christiaan Diedericks, and Pauline Gutter have printed at Atelier le Grand Village and contributed to the portfolio. Other South African artists that printed at the studio includes Mongezi Ncaphayi, Banele Khoza, Hanneke Benade and Themba Khumalo. The following international artists contributed to the portfolio: Michael Barnes, Sasha Bitzer, Corrine Forget, Anne-Catherine Charbonnier, NINA Kovacheva, Patrice Lefèvre, Valentin Stefanoff, Suzanne Touvay and Francis van der Riet. The exhibition is on until the 21st of Feb 2021 at Oliwenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein.

Grounded by The Department of Fine Arts at the University of the Free State. Grounded consists of work created by staff and students from the Department of Fine Arts at the University of the Free State. The participating artists are Lyrene Kuhn- Botma, Andisa Luvalo, Jaco Spies, Adelheid von Maltitz, Leon Witthuhn, Bontle Tau, Juané Venter, Janine Allen, Johandi du Plessis, Dina Grobler, Kara Schoeman, Ben Botma and Willem Boshoff.

The artworks were made before and during lockdown and the initial idea of being grounded originates from the idea of being grounded at home during the lockdown. Grounded in the sense of being restricted and being tied down by an authority operating above the self. However, the meaning of the term “grounded” also suggests having a sagacious ability, thus to make good decisions and an admirable and unpretentious understanding on issues. The valence of the term is embedded within its potential conflicted meanings and offers an energy suitable for an exhibition taking place amidst the Covid 19 pandemic.

Creatively Contrasted: New views on the Permanent Collection is a curated exhibition from the Permanent Collection housed at Oliewenhuis Art Museum, specifically created in celebration of Heritage Day celebrated on 24 September. The Permanent Collection is an outstanding collection of South African art. It has a solid foundation of early South African artists and continually expands on its collection of works by contemporary South African artists.

By selecting artworks by contrasting interesting aspects such as the oldest and the most recently created artwork in the collection, the exhibition aims to give a fresh perspective on the collection. The exhibition highlights the incredible variety of heritage objects that it comprises and pays tribute to the incredible richness of South African visual art. This exhibition is on until 15 November 2020.

My Poetic Collage is a book of poems by the Radioactive Blog creative director and Vrystaat Literature Festival assistant coordinator, Thuthukani Ndlovu. It offers a fascinating journey and insight to his mind and heart, as well as an incredible synergy between Literature, Digital Art, Augmented Reality (AR) and Ambisonics. The book cover is a direct reflection of the title, and speaks to most of the themes covered in the book. He self-published the book through Poetree Publications, and worked with the Artivive to develop the AR poems and images.

Reflecting the beauty and strength of the African continent is at the centre of this exhibition by Clement Mohale. The OFM Art Beat speaks to the NWU Gallery curator, Amohelang Mohajane about this exhibition.

We meet Bontle Tau who is part of the Free State Art Collective but currently on residency in the South of France. She explains what inspires her art, why she loves learning a new language and why the arts can open doors for aspiring artists contrary to popular belief.

Petra Schutte is one of 5 artists from the Free State Art Collective who is currently part of the Turbine Art Fair. She talks about her works on display: There is joy in spaces and how they interact with one another. How buildings interact with nature and vice-versa. There is a rhythm and movement visible through this interaction, but for some, it goes unnoticed. 8 – New Beginning – A solo exhibition

With these paintings and sketches, the artist Marelie Van Rensburg, explores the heritage of faith that is handed down to us by our mothers, as strong South African woman. When circumstances are dire, woman of faith, pray, they rally, they make plans to provide for their families as the Proverbs 31 woman does. A woman of faith is confident because she understands the divine plan of our Heavenly Father and her role to bless lives and has faith over fear. She is confident that any sacrifice she makes is worth something in an eternal sense. She knows about sacrifice from knowing of the life of the Saviour and that there is a new beginning after this pandemic. At the heart of this exhibition is the thought of “faith over fear” and that message is very important to Marelie.

The number 8 has biblical significance as well:

The number 8 in the Bible is a new beginning, it is a number of hope, new horizons and bright future. It is connected with Jesus and his resurrection, as he was resurrected on the 8th day after he was chosen to be the one who will be sacrificed for the sins of humanity.

Alliance Francaise based at the North West University, Potchefstroom campus is hosting the Soundwave music week on 24 and 25 July 2020. Their headline artist is Majozi and the online festival is taking place for free on social media, you merely need to click and tune in.

Prior to the Global pandemic and eminent shut down of international and local public spaces, Mqeku had spent two months in Dakar, Senegal. This was at the newly opened Blackrock Senegal Artist residence, Mqeku spent early 2020 as one of 16 international artists selected for the inagural class. Engaging with Senegalese culture and art, developing cross borders conversations, workshops, language and drawing. Before that he was the recipient of the Goethe Institut GPS initiative. He also speaks about that being an important stepping stone in his career as well as being part of the Free Sate Art Collective.

The Goethe-Institut in Johannesburg calls for proposals for the 2021 edition of the Goethe-Institut Project Space (GPS), a multi-disciplinary roving project space support programme for South Africa. The programme supports work realised in any part of South Africa; ranging from workshops to exhibitions, events and performances; in any discipline including visual art, performing arts, film, music or combinations of afore mentioned forms. The Snelstroom Sneak Peak is an appetizer of what is to come from the Vrystaat Arts Festival’s October online offerings. This festival will be showcasing a few bespoke, curated and experimental work to the public from May until July, to trial the possibilities of online performances and paypoints. There will be several formats delivering high quality artwork to audiences. Live streaming, radio theatre, and pre-recorded work in ways you’ve never seen theatre before. Our partnerships with Think social media, Rooistoel and Creative Kilowatt has been instrumental in developing these platforms, which will in particular support local Free State theatre, dance and music to start off with.

The ArtbankSA is tasked with purchasing artworks from South African artists, particularly that of emerging artists in order to lease and sell the artworks to South African government departments, private companies and private individuals.

The Free State Art Collective’s main purpose is to develop and sustain the careers of all the artists who belong as members and to raise awareness of talent in the Free State, thereby developing a more visible national presence. The Collective also aims to mentor emerging artists and to provide a network of information and opportunity. Like a gallery, the Free State Art Collective has a growing stable of artists whose work will be promoted and sold via the brand. But unlike a gallery, there is no tie to a specific exhibition space. Instead, the collective is mobile, working through the unique curation of events and via exposure nationally at established art shows and events.
