NLC Los Angeles
The Zag is a volunteer-led production from New Leaders Council. The Zag highlights NLC’s 10,000 alumni: local cross-sector leaders who are united in making social and political change in their communities.
Constance Luo is a NLC Houston 2019 Fellow. Her background is in community organizing, elections, local policy, leadership development, interpretation and language justice. She works with Tecolotl, a collective based in Houston that was co-founded by another NLC - Houston alumni, José Eduardo Sánchez. She credits NLC, specifically Charisse Price of NLC - Atlanta, with the opportunity to be a National Urban Fellow and study at Georgetown University with a full ride scholarship for her Master in Policy Management in 2022. She is a second generation Chinese American based in the Chicago area.

Meghan Singh, 2017 NLC Boston Fellow is a bilingual school psychologist in practice since 2010, practicing primarily in urban settings. She is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, and a Licensed Educational Psychologist through the MA Board of Allied Mental Health. Meghan established Singh Psychological Services in 2018 in response to increasing needs of schools and community organizations. She believes every student and family deserves an education that embraces their whole identity, and uses those assets to improve student outcomes.

Rhiannon Cook, 2015 NLC Pittsburgh Fellows, returns to The Zag to share more about her latest venture: working on Black Maternal Health through a program called Spora Mommas. The organization is a virtual doula-led maternal support service designed to center Black joy and well-being throughout the maternal journey. Check it out!
Anna Gouker, NLC Wisconsin alumni and founder of The Rage Fund, was born with spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic condition that requires them to use motorized wheelchairs and ventilators. In 2011 Anna earned her Master’s degree in rehabilitation psychology from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Today she serves as the Outreach Coordinator for AchieveAbilities, whose mission is to empower people to achieve their highest potential by fulfilling employment, financial and personal goals.

2017 NLC Atlanta Fellow Brenda Lopez Romero joins The Zag to share her memories of NLC Institute and more. Brenda is Senior Assistant District Attorney for the Gwinnett Judicial Circuit leading the Justice and Community Initiative. Brenda was the first American Latina elected to the Georgia General Assembly where she sat on the Education, Retirement, and State Planning and Community Affairs committees. We caught up with Ernest Levert Jr, a 2021 NLC Columbus Fellow, to learn more about what he created for his NLC Capstone project. Called the Cooperative Chess Cultural Center (4C- "the fork"), his project focuses on the art of chess making while using the wisdom of chess to protect, heal, and build community. Youth and community members have the opportunity to not only learn and play chess, but also learn how to make their own chess equipment, while gaining exposure to community makers, artists, and leaders. Renée Menart, 2021 NLC San Francisco Fellow, is a passionate advocate for youth impacted by the legal system. She serves as a policy analyst at the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice (CJCJ), a local community-based organization whose mission is to reduce reliance on incarceration as a solution to social problems. She's also a recently published children's book author.
Demetri Makes a Memory Quilt is a heartwarming children’s book that tells the story of a young boy whose mom is in prison. With the help of his family, he embarks on a creative healing process and explores ways to connect with his mom. 2019 NLC Kentucky Fellow Donald Mason joins The Zag to share more about his work in cultural programming, historical preservation and community engagement. In January 2020, Donald was named the first full-time Executive Director for the Classical Music Institute, based in San Antonio, TX. He details his work during the pandemic and how important it is for all of us to reconnect with the arts and with music.

From Los Angeles to Boston and Chicago to Miami, US cities are struggling to address the twin crises of high housing costs and household instability. Debates over the appropriate course of action have been defined by two poles: building more housing or enacting stronger tenant protections. These options are often treated as mutually exclusive, with support for one implying opposition to the other.
Shane Phillips, 2017 NLC LA alum, believes that effectively tackling the housing crisis requires that cities support both tenant protections and housing abundance. He offers readers of his new book, The Affordable City, more than 50 policy recommendations, beginning with a set of principles and general recommendations that should apply to all housing policy.

Christopher Lo-Records, 2014 NLC LA Fellow, is soon to be a published author. Released by an indie press in Riverside, called Inlandia, his book called Care: Stories is comprised of 14 stories about queer characters living in the Inland Empire, CA in a realistically dystopic near future.
The stories are diverse in focus and perspective: an elderly lesbian couple raising their two agoraphobic adult sons, an alcoholic celebrating her 58th birthday, a non-binary person arranging a random hookup with a man down the street, a recently divorced queer woman in her 40s who almost accidentally falls into a co-dependent sexual relationship with a 20 year old man.

Alexis Bromley, NLC Omaha 2017, along with her nonprofit One Omaha recognized a gap that needed to be filled by neighbors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As Executive Director of Sakhi for South Asian Women, Kavita Mehra, NLC New Jersey 2013 Fellow, is on the frontlines ensuring that domestic violence survivors’ basic needs are met during this unstable moment.
The fallout from COVID-19 disproportionately affects Sakhi's clients who are overwhelmingly immigrant women of color with little to no income—and if employed, often in hourly wage work in service jobs that are being decimated by growing social distancing requirements. Sakhi is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 related calls from existing clients who are losing jobs, facing food and housing insecurity, and experiencing pressure to allow abusers back into their homes—violating orders of protection. These setbacks are also creating mounting levels of anxiety and depression among clients, taxing the organization's mental health services.
In response, Sakhi has modified all of their core services to maintain continuity of support for clients; expanded their Food Justice Program to address rising food insecurity; and expanded their Client Emergency Assistance Program to provide immediate help to clients in crisis.
Through the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region, Jonathan Richardson, NLC Capital District NY 2016 Fellow, launched the Capital Region Community COVID-19 Response Fund in partnership with our local United Way to rapidly deploy financial resources to nonprofits on the frontlines of the pandemic.
Behind the scenes, Jonathan created the grant application infrastructure online to make it accessible for all nonprofits, assisted in raising over $800,000 for the fund, and managed the communications and marketing about the response fund, which has distributed over $650,000 in grants so far. Marlin Jenkins, NLC Maryland 2016 Fellow, a member of the Maryland National Guard, has been activated to respond to the coronavirus pandemic.
As a Lieutenant Colonel, he is a senior logistics officer in charge of acquiring and distributing PPE to Soldiers conducting COVID-19 screening sites and distributing meals throughout Maryland. When not on military duty, as the community liaison to Delegate Wanika Fisher, Esq (D-47B) he is volunteering to distribute supplies to his neighbors in Hyattsville, MD.

Our first two guest podcast features 2019 NLC Kentucky Fellow Carly Muetterties and her colleague Maddie Shepard. They are the authors of Bluegrass Bold: Stories of Kentucky Women, a children’s book that will showcase women who actively contributed to bettering their communities.
This project began as author Carly Muetterties’ NLC capstone. Just as NLC supports young progressive leaders, the authors want to help show young(er) progressives that they have a voice and can be a leader in their communities.
In both national and state history, women’s contributions are often overlooked, if not entirely absent. Likewise, women’s voices within the historical record are often lacking in breadth, depth, and diversity. This book is designed to provide voice to a diverse array of women, past and present, whose contributions to national and state history deserve recognition. Each woman will have a 1-page story, coupled with an artistic rendering, created by different Kentucky artists.
