The famous 1988 carbon-14 dating of the Shroud of Turin concluded that the mysterious linen cloth is no more than 760 years old. But how accurate was that test? Who were the people behind it? Are there good reasons to doubt the validity of the 1260-1390 AD date for the cloth believed by so many to be the burial shroud of Jesus Christ? All that and more!

Awesome Frank Herbert quote: “A man is a fool not to put everything he has, at any given moment, into what he is creating. You're there now doing the thing on paper. You're not killing the goose, you're just producing an egg. So I don't worry about inspiration, or anything like that. It's a matter of just sitting down and working. I have never had the problem of a writing block. I've heard about it. I've felt reluctant to write on some days, for whole weeks, or sometimes even longer. I'd much rather go fishing, for example, or go sharpen pencils, or go swimming, or what not. But, later, coming back and reading what I have produced, I am unable to detect the difference between what came easily and when I had to sit down and say, ‘Well, now it's writing time and now I'll write.’ There's no difference on paper between the two.”

This book was recommended to me several times over the years. It’s a rich, beautifully written autobiography that covers many powerful themes, chiefly: 1) the author’s relationship with his wife who died rather unexpectedly after a short illness when they were in their late 30s, 2) their friendship with C.S. Lewis (the book contains many of Lewis’ letters to Vanauken), and 3) their shared journey of faith. BEWARE: If you have a human soul, you will cry when reading portions of this text!

Land navigation was always one of my favorite things to do in the Army, but it required a level of humility and trust that did not always come easily. It’s the same with life. Do you measure God by worldly circumstances or the circumstances of life by God and His word? Please join me today and share this important episode as widely as you can!

Part 7 of our 8-part salvation history series is an eagle’s eye view of a very complicated section of the Bible: the time of the kings and kingdom(s), and the advent of the Babylonian Exile. Join Mike for a rather rollicking sprint through what he thinks are the most significant takeaways.

Part 6 of our 8-part series takes us into the windswept sands of ancient Egypt and the dramatic story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery under Moses’ leadership. Mike sketches out the key features of the narrative and focuses especially on the deeper theological connections hidden there in plain sight. Check it out!

Here’s the link to that text: https://bit.ly/2Xr91rq. Please share this with everyone and may you have a blessed and HAPPY EASTER!

Saturday February 22, 2020 marked the 40th anniversary of the legendary 1980 “Miracle on Ice” hockey match in which the US Olympic team defeated the supposedly undefeatable Soviets at Lake Placid, NY. To commemorate this remarkable event as well as its far reaching implications, I thought I’d review the 2004 Disney film Miracle.

Some musical pieces just strike you in a really special way. One song inexplicably lifts you up with a spirit of bold resolution. Another brings you to your knees in a quivering, emotional outburst. In 1897 an editorial entitled "Is There a Santa Claus?" appeared in The New York Sun. Prompted by an inquiring 8-year-old girl, the response remains famous to this day. But even though the editorial made some important points, I have some issues with it. Tune in to hear my breakdown!

A few years ago I was inspired to write a blog post about a particularly troubling attitude that is quite prevalent out there. Folks who hold to a "reductionist" view of life tend to think they're realists, but in truth they close the door on the most real experiences of all! For more, check out this episode and read the blog post here: click for link.
After several high school students kept asking me if I was going to review Kanye's new album, I finally caved! As it turns out, there was a lot to consider when taking this on. So to help me take a closer look at "Jesus Is Lord", I invited my seminarian brother Joe Creavey to become the very first guest on The Gracious Guest Show! Here are some links we mentioned along the way:
The Latin root of conspiracy means "to breathe together" with someone else. We use the word to mean the plotting/planning of some illegal activity. So what in the world does that word have to do with innocently entertaining far-out-there ideas about stuff that keeps the wonder and awe door wide open? Today, I'm just going to muse about 3 of my favorite such theories!
Can he be saved? Is he beyond redemption? It's one of the big questions ahead of the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Join me while I lay out my thoughts on the matter!
In the Army, we were often encouraged to develop and follow a 3-part leadership paradigm: BE, KNOW, DO. Well guess what, I just found a connection between that Army adage, the "Transcendentals" (Beauty, Truth, Goodness), and the Holy Trinity! Tune in to hear more.

Dr. Kreeft explores numerous doorways to the transcendent that await us around every turn… if we'll just learn to see them. Check out my review and be sure to get yourself a copy today! (available at Ignatius Press or Amazon). To read the fantastic article by Joseph Pearce I mention in this episode click here.

Today I'd like to explore how I think the themes of identity and purpose arise throughout the Star Wars franchise so tune in!
The 1993 film The Sandlot still resonates with countless people who have enjoyed its themes, storyline, and excellent production value over the past 25 years. Today I'd like to go where perhaps no one has gone before and consider an intriguing religious connection point. Please join me!

It's been awhile! It's Thanksgiving season (I think we can all agree it's more of a "season" than just a holiday!) so things have been extra crazy. Some of my most enjoyable memories involve standing side by side with my closest friends, microphones in hand belting out song after song in many a karaoke bar! But beyond the fun it would always bring, I often discovered something deeper and more interesting through the conversations we'd end up having with the people we'd meet. Check out today's episode where I take you into the world of karaoke and the lessons I've learned there (You'll even hear some samples from our favorite songs!) Finally, as a special treat you'll hear the first of what will surely become a regular segment featuring The Gracious Guest Show's very own field correspondent, my eleven-month-old daughter, Noelle!
Let's be real here - almost everyone has run into this experience! You're there, the time is now, you've spent hours agonizing over how it will go. Lights! Camera! ACTION! What's the big deal with being "on the spot"? What can you do to try and conquer what seems to be the biggest fear of so many people? Check out today's episode as I share some thoughts and experiences of my own in this arena.
German philosopher Josef Pieper (1904 - 1997) was an incredibly influential 20th Century thinker, and he was nothing short of a prophet in many ways.
