These two procedures address different concerns:

✅ Diastasis Recti Repair focuses solely on tightening the abdominal muscles that have separated, often due to pregnancy or weight fluctuations. This procedure restores core strength but does not remove excess skin or fat.

✅ Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) includes diastasis recti repair but also removes loose skin and excess fat, resulting in a firmer, more contoured abdomen.

While both surgeries improve abdominal appearance and function, abdominoplasty provides a more comprehensive transformation.

Understanding how Medicare and private health insurance work together can help you better plan for the financial aspects of your surgery. Let’s take a closer look at how the system works:

  1. Medicare Scheduled Fee: Every procedure listed under Medicare has a scheduled fee set by the government. For example, let’s say the scheduled fee for your surgery is $1,000. This fee is a standard amount that Medicare assigns to each type of operation or treatment.
  2. Medicare Coverage (Without Private Health Insurance): If you only have Medicare (without private health insurance), Medicare will reimburse you 75% of the scheduled fee. In our example, you would receive $750 back from Medicare. However, this only covers the procedure itself—it does not include costs such as hospital stays, which can add up quickly.
  3. Private Health Fund Coverage (With Insurance): If you have private health insurance, your health fund will typically cover 100% of the Medicare-scheduled fee. In our example, that means your insurer would cover the full $1,000. In some cases, private health funds might even pay more than the scheduled fee—sometimes up to 120% or 140%. This means you could get $1,200 to $1,400 back, depending on your policy.
  4. Hospital Costs: Private health insurance becomes particularly important when it comes to hospital fees. Medicare does not cover private hospital costs, which can be quite substantial, especially for procedures that require an extended stay or specialized care. Your private health insurance will typically cover most of these costs, though you might have an excess or out-of-pocket payment depending on your plan.
  5. Excess and Out-of-Pocket Costs: While private health insurance will generally cover a large portion of the expenses, there may still be some out-of-pocket costs, such as an excess (the amount you need to pay towards your hospital stay). This varies depending on your health fund and the specifics of your policy.
  6. Why Private Health Insurance Matters: Having private health insurance is highly recommended for anyone undergoing a surgery covered by a Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) item number. It helps significantly with both the procedure and hospital costs, making the entire process more affordable. Without it, the out-of-pocket expenses for private hospital stays can be quite high.

In summary, while Medicare helps cover some of the costs for medically necessary surgeries, private health insurance provides additional coverage that can make a big difference—especially when it comes to hospital fees. Make sure to check with your private health fund before surgery to understand exactly what they will cover.

In breast augmentation surgery, one of the key decisions is the placement of the implants, which can be under the muscle (submuscular), partially under the muscle (dual plane), or above the muscle (subglandular). The choice depends on two main factors: the amount of natural breast tissue and the size of the implant.

If you have more than two centimeters of breast tissue covering the implant, placing it above the muscle may result in a more natural look and movement, as the muscle won't interfere with the implant's movement. However, if you have less breast tissue, placing the implant under the muscle is often recommended to provide additional coverage and avoid visibility of the implant, reducing the risk of issues like rippling or a "double fold." Dual plane placement is a hybrid approach that offers the benefits of both submuscular and subglandular placements, ideal for certain patients who need more coverage while avoiding some of the limitations of a full submuscular approach.

Matching the implant size to your body dimensions is crucial to achieving the best results.

If you're a hairdresser considering breast implants, the amount of time off work largely depends on the type of implant and placement:

  • Under the muscle: You’ll likely need around two weeks off because your job involves lifting your arms frequently, which can strain the chest muscles. This placement causes more discomfort during recovery.
  • Above the muscle: If the implants are placed above the muscle, one week off is generally enough for recovery.

The size of the implants also plays a role. Larger implants (450-500cc or more) may require more time off, potentially adding an extra week to your recovery. Smaller implants could allow you to shave off a few days, but keep in mind that everyone's recovery is different.

So, plan for some flexibility and listen to your body to ensure a smooth recovery!

It sounds like you’re in the early stages of recovery after your extended abdominoplasty, and you're wondering when you’ll start seeing your final shape. There are a few key factors to keep in mind that can influence the timeline for visible results:

  1. Swelling: It's completely normal to experience swelling after surgery, which can initially obscure your shape. If you had liposuction as part of the procedure, the swelling might take a bit longer to subside. Typically, you'll start seeing noticeable changes in shape around the 3-6 month mark, but it can take up to 12 months for the final result to fully reveal itself.
  2. No Liposuction: If you didn’t have liposuction and your surgery mainly involved removing loose skin (as is often the case with post-weight loss patients), you may start seeing your shape more quickly. In this case, 1 to 2 months could be enough time for you to notice significant improvements.
  3. Type of Abdominoplasty: With a more traditional approach (which some surgeons use), where skin is simply pulled down without liposuction, the shape may not be as dramatic. This method doesn't address the fat in the tissue, so the final contour may be less defined compared to an approach that includes liposuction.

In summary, the timeline for seeing your final shape can vary:

  • With liposuction: Expect to see more of your new shape in 3 to 6 months, with final results around 12 months.
  • Without liposuction and just skin removal: You might see the shape sooner, around 1 to 2 months.

As you heal, be patient and keep following your surgeon’s post-op care instructions. Each body heals at its own pace, but with time, the results will become clearer.

Scar massage is an essential component of recovery following an abdominoplasty procedure. This massage technique aids in breaking down rigid scar tissue and promoting healing. Begin approximately two to three weeks post-surgery, when your surgeon approves. Using firm, circular motions with your fingertips, gently massage along the scar line. This technique should be executed for five to ten minutes, twice daily. Over time, consistent massage can decrease the visibility of the scar by improving the circulation to the area, enhancing skin elasticity, and preventing adhesions. It's crucial to use a suitable moisturizing agent, such as a topical silicone gel or vitamin E oil, to ensure smooth movement and conditioning of the tissue. Always follow your surgeon's specific guidelines to optimize healing and reduce the risk of complications.

The main difference between a standard abdominoplasty and a fleur de lis abdominoplasty lies in the extent and direction of skin removal and tightening. In a standard abdominoplasty, the excess skin is primarily removed and tightened in a vertical sense, with incisions typically made in a horizontal line across the lower abdomen. This method is most effective for patients with excess skin, predominantly around the lower abdominal region, often resulting from pregnancy or moderate weight loss. In contrast, a fleur de lis abdominoplasty is more comprehensive, as it addresses excess skin both vertically and horizontally. This technique involves an additional vertical incision, which allows for the removal of more skin, making it ideal for individuals with significant weight loss who are left with extensive sagging. Thus, the choice between these procedures depends on the patient's specific anatomical needs and the surgeon's assessment of the most effective approach to achieve the desired body contour.

Hello everyone, I’m Dr. Bernard Beldholm, and in today’s episode, we're diving into an important topic that many may not consider when discussing abdominoplasty – the management and repair of hernias during the procedure.

As a specialist surgeon, I often encounter patients who, aside from wanting to improve their abdominal contour, are dealing with an underlying hernia that can complicate their situation. These hernias often present themselves in various forms, such as umbilical or incisional hernias, and can lead to discomfort or more serious health issues if left unaddressed.

In my practice, I take a holistic approach, aiming not just for aesthetic improvement but to ensure my patients’ overall health and well-being. During an abdominoplasty, we have a unique opportunity to assess and repair these hernias simultaneously. This dual approach can help in creating a flatter and firmer abdomen while alleviating potential pain and complications associated with the hernia itself.

Throughout this episode, I’ll share some of my experiences, discuss how we effectively repair hernias during abdominoplasty, and provide insights into post-operative care to ensure the best outcomes for my patients. So, if you’re considering an abdominoplasty and are wondering about the possibility of hernia repair, stay tuned!

In this episode, I, as your surgeon, want to highlight the critical role that early mobilization plays in your recovery after surgery. It’s natural to feel apprehensive about getting up and moving, especially in the days following your procedure. However, starting to mobilize as soon as it is safe can significantly benefit your recovery process. Early movement can improve circulation, reduce the risk of blood clots, and contribute to quicker healing. I will provide you with detailed information on what to expect during recovery and share practical tips to help you start moving safely and effectively. Whether you’re preparing for your surgery or are already in recovery, this episode aims to empower you with knowledge and motivation to embrace early mobilization for a smoother healing journey.

In this episode, I want to address a critical concern for patients undergoing surgery: the potential complications that can arise from scheduling multiple procedures in one sitting. Patients may not realise that when a surgical team is tasked with performing too many operations consecutively, it can lead to a heightened risk of mistakes, longer recovery times, and increased stress on the body. I'll share anecdotes from my experiences in the operating room, discuss the effects of cognitive overload on surgical teams, and provide insights on why it's crucial for patients to advocate for a careful and deliberate approach to their surgical care. By understanding the implications of overextending surgical sessions, patients can better navigate their treatment options and prioritise their health and safety.

A Mini Tummy Tuck is ideal for mums who have a small amount of loose skin after pregnancy.

A Mini Tummy Tuck is a limited procedure, so it won’t remove excess skin on the upper abdomen, nor will it repair separated ab muscles.

While it won’t provide the same results as a Full Tummy Tuck, the Mini Abdominoplasty has several benefits. It has a shorter scar and an easier recovery.

Speaking of recovery, you probably want to know what to expect after a Mini Tummy Tuck. I go through this in this Podcast.

This is the comment on my youtube channel.

"Everytime say very rare and I want to cry. I have all these symptoms. I'm 3 months post op and I've had to had drains reinserted 2x in addition to the initial drain. Currently I'm in utter agony and now my belly button is leaking some sort of thick white fluid after being fine for about a month. The first two weeks after surgery, I don't ven wish on the devil. And I was left with a shelf belly with loose skin. I should have stayed with the excessively loose skin from losing 100+ lbs naturally.  I felt human. Now, I feel a monster. Gentlepeople, research your surgeon throughly. Pay close attention that they aren't trying to scam you. I did and even with my mother in law having a successful breast augmention done by the same dr...his bedside manner has left much to be desire. Constant pain is horrible. I can still feel and hear the dr having to reinsert the drains in me and sucking out all the liquid. I had to fo that 2x and might have to do it again.  I'm mentally, emotionally, physically and financially at my end. Make sure the surgeon you pick LISTENS to you and doesn't dismiss your concerns. I should have left the office when I heard the "I never have complications" bit."

I will go through this in detail in this podcast episode.

A Fleur-de-lis Tummy Tuck is for patients who have an extreme amount of loose abdominal skin after weight loss. It removes more skin than a regular Tummy Tuck.

Fleur-de-lis is French for water lily. It refers to the pattern of skin excision used in a Fleur-de-lis Tummy Tuck, which leaves a vertical and horizontal scar.

The horizontal cut removes the excess skin from the upper and lower abdomen.

The vertical cut removes the excess skin from the middle.

When I bring the skin together and suture it closed, it creates a narrower waistline. The operation takes four to six hours.

If you’re thinking about a Fleur-de-lis Tummy Tuck, you may wonder what recovery is like. I review this in detail in this podcast episode.

An Inner Thigh Lift removes extra skin from the inner thighs. It’s commonly done after extreme weight loss. The loose skin can rub together and cause chafing, sweating and rashes. Many of my patients say the extra skin makes it hard to feel good in their clothes.

If you’re considering a Thigh Lift, you probably have lots of questions. It helps to know what to expect. That way, you can go into surgery with no surprises.

In this podcast I discuss the recovery from an inner thigh lift.

Want to know what the recovery is after a tummy tuck?Make sure that you listen to this podcast.

Many patients come to see me for a Full Tummy Tuck after weight loss or pregnancy.

My post-weight loss patients want their loose skin removed since it can cause rubbing and discomfort. Others feel they still look overweight since the extra skin adds bulk under their clothes. Despite losing weight, they are still not able to wear what they like.

For post-pregnancy mums, a Full Tummy Tuck removes the loose skin and repairs the separated muscles, a condition known as diastasis recti.

Many patients are concerned about the recovery time after Tummy Tuck surgery. They often have children or jobs that they want to get back to. In this video, I discuss an overview of what to expect at each stage of recovery.

Mums want to feel confident and wear their favourite clothes. If your tummy gets in the way of that, here are 8 fixes.

  1. Loose skinPROBLEM — Your tummy looks deflated after birth.

SOLUTION — Skin may retract naturally. Healthy habits support skin repair. Eat well, drink water, don’t smoke. Saggy skin can be treated with a tummy tuck.

  1. Excess fatPROBLEM — Pregnancy weight gain can rock your self esteem.

SOLUTION — Write a diet and exercise plan. Eat veggies and lean proteins. Exercise 3-5x a week. If a small fat pocket won’t budge, consider body contouring such as VASER liposuction or TruSculpt.

  1. Stretch marksPROBLEM — Angry stretch marks can make mums want to hide their tummy.

SOLUTION — Stretch marks fade over time. LED Light, Laser Genesis or Rx creams may fade them faster.

  1. Still looking pregnantPROBLEM — If your tummy pooch won’t go away, it could be muscle separation or pregnancy weight gain.

SOLUTION — To lose weight, diet and exercise is the best solution. Skip crash diets. Instead, write a weekly menu plan, do meal prep and stay active. Try core exercise or physiotherapy for separated muscles. A tummy tuck can also repair the muscle.

  1. IncontinencePROBLEM — Does urine leak when you laugh or cough?

SOLUTION — Try kegels. Vaginal rejuvenation may also reduce incontinence by thickening the vaginal walls.

  1. C-section scarPROBLEM — A Caesarean leaves a scar.

SOLUTION — Laser Genesis and Rx creams may improve redness and texture. Scar revision can also be done during a tummy tuck.

  1. Saggy monsPROBLEM — A bulging mons pubis makes it hard to wear swimwear and pants.

SOLUTION — Losing weight may reduce mons fat. Liposuction and non-invasive options like TruSculpt are available. Extensive sagging is treated with a mons lift. This can be done during a tummy tuck.

  1. Muscle separationPROBLEM — The 6-pack abs can separate due to pregnancy.

SOLUTION — Core exercises and physiotherapy may improve muscle separation. If that fails, a tummy tuck may be the next step.

Is belly button removal during a tummy tuck normal? While most patients keep their own belly button, there are two scenarios when removing the belly button during a tummy tuck, belt lipectomy, or body lift is in the patient’s best interest. Don’t worry, though. There is always an opportunity to create a new belly button — or “neoumbilicus” — using your abdominal skin. For some patients, this has several benefits. Today’s podcast is all about hiding tummy tuck scars. Tummy tuck scar placement is very important for a good result. No one wants it to be obvious that they had a tummy tuck to remove loose skin.

Fashion trends are important on both the runway and inside the operating room. Changing swimsuit and underwear styles have definitely affected how surgeons place tummy tuck scars over the years. Since the 1990s, low-cut bottoms have been hugely popular. The French high-cut bikini was also popularized by TV shows like Baywatch. Yet in recent years, we are seeing high-rise, full coverage swimsuits come back in fashion. Cheeky bottoms have also made an appearance. With all the fashion trends that come and go, planning scar placement can be tricky.

Most post-pregnancy and post-weight loss patients aren’t big fans of bikinis and cheeky bottoms. Of course, personal preferences vary from patient to patient. By bringing in your preferred style of swimsuit or underwear to the consultation, Dr. Bernard Beldholm, FRACS can design a scar that is nicely hidden in the bikini line. To see pictures of popular swimsuit styles and learn which scar placement is best, check out the podcast to learn more.

Do you need to fix a bad tummy tuck? You aren’t alone. A tummy tuck is supposed to give you a smooth, flat tummy -- but in reality, that doesn’t always happen. An inexperienced  tummy tuck surgeon might not give a good result. Perhaps you need a belly button revision because the navel looks too round, or you may want to fix a poor incision/scar. Other times, what you really needed was liposuction in addition to a tummy tuck, but the first surgery did not include lipo. Then, there are other reasons you may need a revision tummy tuck, such as having another baby, gaining then losing weight, or loss of skin elasticity as you get older. Fear not, a revision surgery with a qualified surgeon can help. A tummy tuck revision can even address loose upper abdominal skin after a mini tummy tuck. In today’s podcast, Doctor Bernard explains more about tummy tuck revision surgery.

If you are planning to have a c-section birth, you may be thinking about getting a c-tuck. C-tuck surgery is a two-in-one procedure that combines a c-section delivery with a tummy tuck at the same time. It seems like a great idea. After all, why go under the knife twice if you don’t have to?

Not so fast. In this video, Dr. Bernard Beldholm, FRACS tells the story about why c-tuck surgery is unsafe.

Many celebrities are suspected of having c-tuck surgery. But c-tuck surgery is far less common than you’d think. In fact, most qualified cosmetic surgeons are unwilling to perform the procedure. There are several important reasons for this.

Firstly, c-tuck complications and risks are sky high. Studies show that infection rates, tissue death and wound splitting are much more likely than when a c-section and tummy tuck are performed separately.

Patients are tempted to think that they are immune to risk. Some new mums want their pre-baby body back so badly, they would do almost anything. The desire to get a flat tummy after pregnancy is understandable. However, safety concerns aren’t the only reason to not get a c-tuck.

As Doctor Bernard explains in the video, c-tuck surgery gives a poor cosmetic result. So even for patients that would be willing to accept the higher surgical risks, there is really no point since the results won’t look good. For new mums that want a beautiful, flat tummy after baby, it is best to have the c-section birth and tummy tuck surgery separately.

There are plenty more reasons to say no to c-tucks. To find out more, click the link!

Exercise and fitness is important after a tummy tuck. In this video, Dr. Bernard Beldholm FRACS, a body contouring specialist surgeon in Australia, shares the best exercises after tummy tuck at each stage of recovery.

Many patients think that staying in bed all day is the best way to heal. This thinking is outdated. Today, doctors know that it is important to get moving as soon as possible after surgery. Yes, even on Day 1! While you won’t be working out or lifting heavy groceries for a few weeks after tummy tuck, light physical activity such as walking can be extremely beneficial.

Knowing what to expect at each stage of recovery helps make sense of the kinds of exercise that can be done. Here is an exercise plan for what most patients can expect in the weeks following surgery:

1-2 weeks after surgery

Walking is the best thing to do at this stage. The latest medical science says that walking soon after a tummy tuck can improve recovery. Standing up to walk every few hours is all that is needed. For the first day, you may need to walk only for a few minutes. It can be hard on the first day, but well worth it. Walking has been shown to reduce the risk of blood clots after surgery. You can walk more each day. Be patient, you will be walking upright by Day 10.

2-4 weeks after surgery

You guessed it. More walking! Now you are walking upright and can do even more walking each day. Light cycling (on a machine only - stay off the road) is also possible for most patients. Non-strenuous daily activities also become a possibility. Avoid heavy lifting of any kind. For example, bags of heavy groceries or weight lifting is a no-go.

4-6 weeks after surgery

Now that you're healing nicely, light exercise may be resumed. Low-impact aerobics are a good idea. You can also start taking longer walks. Lifting arm and leg weights is also possible for most patients. Don't strain yourself too much though. You are still healing. Remember, if you feel pain, stop. Wound breakdown is still a possibility now. Avoid stretching and vigorous exercise at this time.

6-8 weeks after surgery

Hooray! You're back to a full exercise routine. Body lift and extensive tummy tucks patients may require a few extra weeks to return to full exercise, however. Avoid starting any extreme exercise routines for now. Basic full exercise is what to aim for. At 7-weeks post-op, marked swelling is present, but discomfort will be nearly gone.

8+ weeks after surgery

Everything is starting to feel more like normal now. You're feeling good. You can take your full exercise routine a bit further now. When in doubt about any exercise routine, ask your surgeon for advice.

Let’s get moving and on the way to a speedy recovery!

Are you wondering about the current cost for a tummy tuck in Australia? You have come to the right place. ’Tummy tuck cost Australia’ is one of the top Googled questions patients have when thinking about cosmetic surgery.

Researching tummy tuck prices is frustrating, as you have probably noticed by now. It is hard to get a straight answer. Google, and you will be continually met with text saying the “cost will vary” and that the only way to get a price is to book a consultation.

Or even worse, vague answers like “prices start at $6000+”.

As a cosmetic surgeon, I don’t think that is fair. It’s like going down to the car dealership only to be told you can only find out the price of the car after you have spent all afternoon on the lot.

I know that you are busy and price is one of the most common questions there is.

In this podcast, I will discuss my pricing along with what I have found out about what other surgeons charge for a tummy tuck in Sydney and Newcastle.
