A MUSiPOLiTiX JUNETEETH:
On June 15th, 2021, we will be talking with, or more accurately listening to, Joe McClain. You're probably not familiar with his name. Here's a very very abbreviated version of why he should be in history books.
Joe McClain was born in Mississippi in the 1920s and grew up picking cotton and attending a 2 room schoolhouse. He lived a colorful life on both sides of the law, including a career as a professional boxer, eventually landing in Milwaukee Wisconsin.
It was there, during the 1960s, he joined a black paramilitary organization known as the Black Commandos (similar to the Black Panthers) and, under the guidance of Father James Groppi, ultimately became the leader. It was that leadership that brought him to the attention of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King co-oped him as his organizer for the midwest.
After the original civil rights movement, Joe went on to work for the state of Wisconsin, creating the state's first affirmative action program. In the 1990s, he created a community organization called "Arts Are Prevention" teaching kids music, drama, dance, etc. In the 2000s, Joe was instrumental in bringing the "First Tee" program to Wisconsin, teaching young and particularly non white kids to play golf.
Joe has 95 years of stories to tell, 60 of them about civil rights and mentoring youth, all of them interesting. Our goal is to document as many of them as possible on #MUSiPOLiTiX while he is here to tell them. Special guest cohost Fred Wells

Clyde Stubblefield is probably one of the most heard musicians in the world, but hardly anyone knows his name. Clyde's innovative style of drumming transcended the genre he and James Brown helped pioneer, and became a cornerstone of what's now the most popular genre in the world—hip-hop. However, Clyde's contributions to the world went unrecognized, and resulted in him missing out on substantial earnings, leading to a life of perpetual exploitation, missed opportunities and health issues.
Give The Drummer Some is an enlightening story of an unsung pioneer in American music history. This documentary's mission is to provide the long over-due recognition to an unsung musical pioneer, who as an African-American man during the civil rights era, played a significant role in the evolution of popular music on a global scale.
Trevor Banks, the filmmaker, will be our guest for this special tribute episode. Dan & Michael both knew Clyde personally and will be sharing stories, as well as Clyde's influence on them and those they worked with. Several other well known drummers will be joining us to also talk about Clyde's influence and share their stories.

He passed unexpectedly last summer, and because of the pandemic there were no held any services for him. Guests: The Reverend Michael Malcom is the Founder and Executive Director of The People's Justice Council and Alabama Interfaith Power and Light and a licensed and ordained United Church of Christ Minister. Rev Malcom is the former Senior Pastor of Rush Memorial Congregational UCC in Atlanta, GA. He is also the Environmental Justice Representative for the Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ on the United Church of Christ's Council on Climate Justice. He is currently the co-chair of the Building Power from the Grassroots Task Force with Climate Action Network International, and the co-chair of the Environmental Justice working group for the Southeast Climate and Energy Network. He served as the International Liaison for the US Climate Action Network and co-chair of the Faith Working Group for the Climate Strike Coalition. Rev Malcom sits on the steering committee of the Kitchen Cabinet. He is also a participant of the 5 Tables Convening.
Marnese Kris Jackson is an Environmental and Climate Justice activist, advocate, trainer and educator from Pontiac, Michigan where she is a mother of two children London and Dawson. Marnese was recently appointed to The Governor Gretchen Whitmer Council on Climate Solutions. Marnese was previously with the Mothers Out Front in December 2018 as the Frontline Organizing Program Manager where she focused on building the base of Mothers in Frontline communities. During this time, Marnese was the staff liaison to US Climate Action Network, staff Equity Team and BIPOC Affinity Team member. Marnese also managed the Youth Global Climate Strike (2019) and Earth Day Live (2020). She is the former Midwest and Great Plain States Regional Organizer for the NAACP’s Environmental and Climate Justice Program. She was the Weatherization Coordinator for Oakland Livingston Human Services Agency and Energy Outreach Specialist for the Southeast Michigan Regional Energy Office.
Lindsay Harper, Arm in Arm National Coordinator, believes that in seeking economic development, utilizing a community-lead approach to business education can facilitate strong #InKind economies, create multi-generational wealth, and build leadership and capacity. Applying these principles will directly address the systemic racial and economic issues perpetuating the climate crisis.
Jeannine Kayembe / Oro Five is a sonic environmentalist . Her artistic practice is based in mixed media consisting of using music ,design,and sculpture. Her work is a commitment to the liberation of nature and oppressed peoples suffering from climate change . .For over a decade she organized alongside peers and fellow artists to create artistic and agricultural platforms for marginalized communities to thrive. The inquiry of Oro Five’s career has been to question access, equity and environment in relation to BIPOC. Oro Five’s debut Ep entitled “EP.A” is a green bridge between hip hop listeners and the stewards of environmental justice. Streaming will be available on April 22nd Earthday 2021.

Have you heard about the political unrest in Rockford, IL, just north of Chicago (and west of Kenosha WI)? No? You're not alone. For the past several months, police and city government there have been criminalizing peaceful protests, using paramilitary tactics, charging nonviolent demonstrators with felonies, and so forth. It's similar to what we've seen in other areas like Portland, but if it werent for social media and organizers like Aija Penix, no one would know about it.
