🎙 Podcast Title: The Arena with Linda McLaughlin
Episode: 49 – J. Paul Nadeau: Choose Your Life

Summary:
In this powerful and deeply personal conversation, host Linda McLaughlin speaks with J. Paul Nadeau — former police detective, hostage negotiator, international peacekeeper, keynote speaker, and author of Take Control of Your Life. Drawing from a traumatic childhood with an abusive, alcoholic father, a 30-year career in law enforcement, and several major life challenges (including divorce and a near-death encounter with terrorists), Paul shares his central message: we often become hostages to our own negative thoughts, but we also hold the key to our freedom by changing our mindset.

Key Themes & Insights:

  • Being a Hostage to Your Mind:
Like a real hostage negotiator, Paul describes how people obey the “hostage-taker” of negative self-talk. Liberation begins with challenging and replacing destructive narratives.
  • Turning Trauma into Purpose:
His childhood abuse, once a source of pain, became a driving force that led him into a career helping others — from arresting abusers to saving lives in crisis.
  • Life’s Setbacks as Gifts:
Divorce, career transitions, and unexpected changes can be reframed as opportunities for growth and new experiences.
  • Profound Life Lesson:
While on a peacekeeping mission in Jordan, Paul was nearly killed by insurgents but was saved by a man he later learned was a terrorist — solely because Paul had treated him with respect. This reinforced the importance of dignity in human interactions.
  • Living Courageously:
Courage is about stepping beyond fear in every arena — physical, moral, social, intellectual — to pursue the life you want.
  • Responsibility and Choice:
Your past does not justify harmful actions today. You are the product of your present choices, not your past suffering.
  • Mindset for the Present:
Paul urges listeners not to live in the “poor me hotel” of the past or become overly fixated on the future. The present is the gift where change and joy happen.
  • Legacy & Impact:
Paul aims to leave the world better through his writing, speaking, and personal example — inspiring others to believe, “Why not me?”

Notable Quotes:

  • "Nobody’s coming to rescue you… it’s up to you to make radical changes in your life."
  • "Some of the most beautiful things lie beyond our fears."
  • "The present is called the present because it is a gift."
  • "You are not a product of your past — you are a product of your choices."

Closing Message:
No matter your current circumstances, someone has overcome something similar. Seek out solutions, surround yourself with positive influences, and make intentional choices to live an extraordinary life.

The last Deep Dive in the 3 episode overview of Paul's book "Take Control of Your Life." In this series you'll discover:

Nadeau's Principles and Techniques for Reclaiming Control Nadeau emphasizes that reclaiming control over thoughts and actions begins with awareness:● Recognizing that negative thoughts can "take you hostage" mentally1 and understanding the difference between being physically held hostage and being hostage to your own thoughts1. ● Engaging in regular self-examination to understand your mental state, identifying what brings you happiness or unhappiness, and assessing your values, motivations, and fears23.Once you are aware of negative thought patterns, you can use the following techniques to reclaim control: ● Developing a SEEMP (Self-Empowering and -Enabling Management Plan)4. Similar to an emergency management plan, a SEEMP helps you to systematically identify, mitigate, prepare for, and recover from negative thoughts and setbacks45. ○ Conduct a personal SWOT analysis to identify your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats6.○Find ways to deal with negative thoughts and prevent them from "settling in," such as exercise, reading, spending time in nature, etc.6. ● Change negative associations to positive ones. By consciously replacing negative self-talk with positive affirmations, you can shift your perception of challenging situations and develop the motivation to take positive action78. ○ Reframe painful experiences by focusing on the pleasure associated with taking positive action78. ● Challenge negative beliefs and replace them with empowering ones. Nadeau encourages you to see yourself as "limitless" and capable of achieving your goals910. ○ Identify limiting beliefs that keep you feeling helpless and replace them with thoughts and actions that promote success11.○Use affirmations to shift your mindset and remind yourself of your strength and worthiness12.Nadeau argues that taking action is crucial for escaping negative thought patterns and achieving your goals: ● Don't dwell on the past. Acknowledge past experiences but focus on the present moment and the choices you can make to create a positive future1314. ● Make a conscious decision to change. Identify areas in your life that you want to improve and commit to taking specific, directed action151617. ● Develop positive habits. Consistent effort and action, even in small steps, are essential for achieving lasting change1819. ● Be persistent and adaptable. Accept that setbacks and failures are part of the process and be willing to adjust your approach as needed1719.Nadeau also emphasizes the importance of gratitude and faith in maintaining a positive mindset: ● Cultivating gratitude helps shift focus from what is lacking to the abundance already present in life20. ● Having faith can provide strength and resilience during challenging times, allowing you to persevere towards your goals21. By implementing these principles and techniques, you can move beyond self-sabotaging behaviors, reclaim control over your thoughts and actions, and live a more fulfilling life22. Welcome to an inspiring episode of the "Inspire Us" podcast with your host, J. Paul Nadeau, a renowned author, motivational speaker, and former hostage negotiator. In this episode, he opens up a conversation on seeking help when the times get tough, a topic drawn from his book, "Reset, The Badass Guide to Living Life on Your Own Terms."

In an attempt to shed light on the importance of asking for help, Paul states that no one, no matter how strong, is expected to bear all of life's burdens alone. The challenges and pressures of modern life may vary from our ancestors' threats, but like them, our survival odds improve greatly when we surround ourselves with a supportive tribe. Seeking help during troubled times is not a sign of weakness but a viable strategy for success.

This episode highlights how resisting the tendency to hide pain and challenges can genuinely make a difference. Paul uses an example from history to illustrate this point - drawing parallels with the story of Jesus' crucifixion and how even he, in his might, required assistance. The takeaway here is that everyone, regardless of their strength or status, needs help at times, and it's okay to lean on those around us.

Furthermore, Paul emphasizes that openness about struggles, be it with your closest people or mental health professionals, allows us to tap into our authentic selves' potential. It's a responsibility we all have, to be truly human and interdependent. In this enlightening episode of Inspire Us, your host, J. Paul Nadeau, a former hostage negotiator turned motivational speaker, shares valuable life lessons drawn from unique and captivating stories. This particular episode explores the enlightening tale from the book 'The Zen Monkey and the Lotus Flower' compiled by Tempa Yeshi. This book offers diverse philosophies and perspectives that help make sense of complex life dynamics.

The tale today is about a hare that discovered a gold-plated watering can. While beautiful, it had no usefulness to the hare, thus making it a burden. The wise monkey, Bodhi, taught the hare to appreciate aspects beyond superficial beauty, address unnecessary burdens and experience the joys of sharing. Balancing between the authors' views and his comments, Paul Nadeau draws parallels with our lives, arguing that the beauty of a thing is not only in its appearance but also in its usefulness.

Welcome to “Inspire Us,” hosted by motivational speaker and acclaimed author J. Paul Nadeau. Paul's journey has seen him go from being a hostage negotiator to helping people with inspiring words and stories that boost hopes, dreams and mental well-being. This episode takes an interesting spin as Paul dips into Buddha's philosophies and relates it to his teachings on how to take control of our lives and beat self-sabotage.

On this episode, Paul selects a story from the book "The Zen Monkey and the Lotus Flower" authored by Tempa Yeshe. He reads the narrative and then dissects it, threading his ideas and philosophies through the framework. The story of Tenzin and the Master acts as a focal point, with Paul expounding its central message - the power of living in the present. Buddhists teachings emphasize on being in the present moment, letting go of things we can't control, and releasing the past.

Paul touches on the danger of dwelling in past memories, particularly the negative ones. He surmises that such actions inhibit our ability to embrace the present and to move forward. Similarly, while planning for the future is vital, he warns against the danger of living in an unguaranteed future.

This episode serves as a beacon of understanding about how the present moment is the most important. Life is a series of nows and it is in these moments where we decide how we feel and the thoughts we entertain. Paul's aim throughout the podcast episode is simple - to help his listeners—not just through sharing stories—but by showing how to extract profound lessons from them. Listen in for a journey of self-discovery.

This is an episode of 'Negotiations Ninja' Episode 409 hosted by Mark Raffin! I'm simply resharing it here.

What is Paul’s PIER negotiation process?

  • P = Preparation and planning: Planning is mental preparation and discovery. Where are you going to meet? Under what circumstances will you meet? Will you have a second negotiator? If you truly believe you can offer something of value, you proceed.
  • I = Intent: Your intent must be focused on your client (not yourself). It’s about opening the channels of communication and asking exploratory questions.
  • E = Engage: You must engage them from your first impression. You keep them engaged by asking engaging questions.
  • R = Relationship: Once you’ve successfully baked your PIE, the goal is to build a relationship.

If, at any point during the dating process, something goes wrong, you can amicably leave the process. And the more you know about who you’re negotiating with, the better you can serve them.

Preparation is key to successYou know you’re going to be meeting with someone. You know the topic you’ll be talking about. Hostage negotiators don’t have that luxury. They have to prepare for the unexpected. They do that by running through mock scenarios that they’d practice monthly. If you have a large negotiation in 3-4 days, you need to run through it. Ask someone to roleplay with you. Answer as thoroughly as you can. Most people don’t do this.

Negotiating is like datingNegotiating and selling is like dating. When you start dating someone, you want to see if you have a connection. It’s an exploratory process. It’s the same in a negotiation. You want to ask questions to see if they can work together.

If you ask someone out on a date, your intent has to be focused on that person. You want to make it about them. You want to learn about them. Why? To build trust and likability and determine whether or not you’ll ask for date number two.

If you talk about yourself like you’re the best thing that’s come along, you’ll never get a second date. Your date might just leave. So would a company. Provide people with something they truly want that fits the needs they have.

People want to be seen, understood and appreciated. It’s the same in business. They’ll come back to someone who listens to them and knows their pain points.

We don’t sell to people; we sell for peopleThe goal isn’t to sell someone something they don’t want. You wouldn’t want a family member to work with someone who sells just for a commission. You’d want to send them to someone who cares about their outcome. They seek to understand what someone is looking to do with their product. You want to be that person.

Paul emphasizes that negotiations are not hard. They’re about connecting with another human being. It’s when two or more people get together to reach an agreement. You’re negotiating every day of your life. Don’t make it complicated. Seek to listen and understand the other person and focus your intent on them; it will open doors and build relationships.

Welcome to a special episode of "Inspire Us," where we dive deep into crucial topics for our ever-changing world. While I might not have 20 years of podcasting experience, my extensive background in negotiation, conflict resolution, and self-sabotage certainly adds a unique twist to this discussion.

Episode Title: "Nurturing Resilience in Turbulent Times"

In these trying times of global conflict and financial uncertainty, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless. The ongoing struggles in regions like Israel, Ukraine, and the rising costs of living remind us of the fragile nature of our world. But the key to navigating these challenges lies in understanding the power of self-care, focusing on the controllables, and embracing the gratitude mindset.

Why Self-Care Matters

  1. Control What You Can: In situations beyond our control, it's essential to focus on what we can change - ourselves. Self-care isn't selfish; it's self-preservation. By prioritizing our physical and emotional well-being, we build a strong foundation to face external challenges.

  2. The Power of Gratitude: Gratitude is a potent tool for transforming our mindset. Amidst chaos, it reminds us of the things we have instead of what we lack. By counting our blessings, we cultivate a more positive outlook on life.

  3. Resilience Through Self-Care: The ability to bounce back from adversity is a hallmark of resilience. Self-care, including exercise, meditation, and nurturing personal relationships, provides the strength and mental clarity needed to persevere.

Key Takeaways:

  • Embrace self-care as an act of self-preservation, not selfishness.
  • Cultivate gratitude by focusing on the abundance in your life.
  • Understand that resilience is built through self-care practices.

In uncertain times, remember that you hold the power to shape your response to life's challenges. Join me in this special episode as we explore the profound impact of self-care, gratitude, and resilience.

What are your thoughts on the importance of self-care, Paul? Your experience in negotiation and conflict resolution surely adds a unique perspective to this crucial topic.

The Current Landscape of Discord

Nadeau opens the episode by addressing the current state of the world, where wars rage, political and religious divides run deep, and ideological battles such as the "woke" movement create tensions among people with differing worldviews. This story, originally told in his 2015 TED talk, underscores the profound impact that treating others with dignity and respect can have, even in the most challenging and hostile circumstances.

The Power of Compassion and Listening

Nadeau goes on to emphasize that while many things in the world are beyond our control, our own behavior and attitudes towards others are well within our power. He passionately advocates for a simple yet transformative concept: treating one another with empathy and respect. He argues that change begins at the individual level and that we all have the capacity to make a difference by listening to others without harsh judgment.

It Begins with You

In his characteristic warm and confident style, Nadeau drives home the message that change begins with each of us. He encourages listeners to take a moment to reflect on their own interactions and how they can contribute to a more respectful and harmonious society. In this enlightening podcast episode, J. Paul Nadeau, an expert in negotiation, conflict resolution, and self-sabotage, delves deep into the intriguing topic of self-sabotage. Nadeau, drawing from his wealth of experience as a former hostage negotiator, international peacekeeper, and professional interrogator, provides invaluable insights into understanding and conquering this pervasive human behavior.

Understanding Self-Sabotage

Nadeau begins by unraveling the enigma of self-sabotage. He explains that it's not just about making poor decisions or hindering one's own progress; it goes much deeper. Self-sabotage often stems from the dark narratives we create about ourselves and our abilities. These narratives, shaped by past experiences and beliefs, can hold us back and prevent us from reaching our full potential.

The Power of Positive Narratives and Action

In his characteristic warm and confident style, Nadeau emphasizes the importance of combating these dark narratives with positive ones. He highlights that it's not enough to merely think positively; action is key. Nadeau draws parallels to the iconic speech by Rocky Balboa, where the boxing legend reminds his son that life isn't all rainbows and sunshine. Just as Rocky implores his son to keep moving forward, Nadeau encourages us to take meaningful steps towards our goals, even in the face of adversity.

Nadeau's personal anecdotes and experiences as a hostage negotiator and peacekeeper add depth to his insights. He shares how he had to overcome self-doubt and fear in high-stakes situations, relying on positive narratives and decisive action to navigate through challenges successfully.

Rebounding from Adversity

Another profound aspect of this episode is Nadeau's discussion on rebounding from adversity and setbacks. He acknowledges that life can throw curveballs, but it's how we respond that defines our journey. Drawing on his diverse background, Nadeau illustrates how resilience and determination can lead to remarkable comebacks.

Throughout the podcast, Nadeau's warm and personable style keeps listeners engaged and inspired. His ability to blend his professional expertise with relatable anecdotes makes complex topics like self-sabotage accessible to everyone.

In conclusion, this podcast episode featuring J. Paul Nadeau is a must-listen for anyone seeking to understand and conquer self-sabotage. With his unique blend of wisdom, experience, and positivity, Nadeau provides a roadmap to break free from limiting narratives and take meaningful action on the path to personal growth and success. It's a journey that, as Rocky Balboa reminds us, might not always be easy, but it's undoubtedly worth it. So, lace up your mental gloves and get ready to conquer your self-sabotage tendencies with the guidance of a true expert.

One of a parents' many duties to their children is to keep them safe. One of their worst nightmares is having their child abducted, and that's what has happened to today's guest, Cesar Quintana. Cesars son, Alexander, was abducted at the age of 2 by his mother who fled to her native country, the Ukraine, right before the war. Since then, Cesar has tried everything to get his son back, for which he was granted full custody of by an Orange County, California court Judge. The International Abduction rules don't apply in some countries, and that's the case here. Alexander is now in Russia, and they aren't about to do anything.

What can you do to help bring Alexander home to his father? If you know anyone in Russian government who might be sympathetic to Cesar's case, please reach out to them and to Cesar. Spread the word and sign the petition. The US government must become more involved in these child abduction cases. There are over 1,000 of these per year in the USA. It's time to take action to protect these children.

You can reach Cesar by visiting: www.bringalexanderhome.com

There are terrible acts of injustice and violence happening across the globe every day. In today's episode, we visit one such case that occurred in 1984 in the IRA conflict. Five people were killed and several more injured during a terrorist bombing. Our guest lost her father during that bombing. But instead of blaming and hating, she decided to meet the man accused of killing her father to see if there was some humanity left in him.

This episode talks about how we should all treat one another, despite some of the terrible things that have happened. Perhaps if we did that those terrible things would stop happening and people's lives will be changed. I can attest that that does happen more than you might know.

Jo's bio:

Jo Berry is an inspiring speaker who works to resolve conflicts around the world. Sixteen years after an IRA bomb killed her father in 1984, Jo first met with the man responsible, Pat Magee. This initial three-hour meeting led to them speaking on over three hundred occasions on a shared platform worldwide. Their unusual relationship has been told in the BBC documentary “Facing the Enemy”, was featured in the film “Beyond Right and Wrong”, and inspired “The Bomb”, a play by Kevin Dyer.

The founder of the charity ‘Building Bridges for Peace’, Jo, advocates that unbounded empathy is the biggest weapon we have to transform conflict. With political, religious and racial divides deepening as global and local events unfold, her words offer a message of hope and encourage us all to see the humanity in others.

Jo is frequently invited to address international conferences and seminars on themes of reconciliation, conflict resolution and sustainable peace.  She has spoken and facilitated workshops worldwide, including Lebanon, Rwanda, India, Ireland, Palestine, South Korea,  Israel, and throughout Europe. She has also spoken in venues in the UK and joined panels and discussions forums on radio and TV. Her unique work in reconciliation has become a source of learning for many studying peace studies and conflict transformation worldwide.

Over the few last years, Jo has developed workshops and courses in the workplace on ‘finding the gift in conflict’, ‘having a difficult conversation’ and ‘dealing with uncertainty’ and now works virtually as well in person. She is a TEDx speaker and a Visiting Fellow with the University of Nottingham (Research Primary Area in Rights and Justice).

Post-traumatic stress is a mental health condition that affects so many people. Some are unaware that they are suffering from it and just can't explain why they're feeling the way that they are. Traumatic experiences from our past can stay with us if we don't do something to deal with them. It's important to get the help that you need in order to deal with those past traumas.

In this episode, our guest shares her traumatic experience of having been summoned to a home following a homicide to help clear the blood and body. She also found herself as potentially the next victim of this murderer. Listen in as she talks about this horrific incident and what she's doing to recover and help those who have experienced traumas in the past.

Ashley's message to us:

"My name is Ashley Michelle and have gone through things that I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through, including being assaulted and not only being a witness to a murder scene where my ex-boyfriend had just killed someone I knew of, but he locked the door behind me and told me I was next.

Thankfully I escaped, but, from that moment, my life has been filled with PTSD, depression, and anxiety.

Instead of this taking over my life, I chose to talk about what happened to me, but more importantly, about my healing process so I can inspire people to change their lives after going through their own tough times.

I want someone to look at me and say, because of you, I didn't give up!"

Time is guaranteed to no person. It's sad how many of us take our health or relationships for granted, without considering the cold harsh truth: we could die at any time. In this episode, Grant Lottering was given a second chance, and with that second chance, he's made the best of it.

About Grant:

Since the age of 12, Grant Lottering had a passion for cycling and would eventually start racing as a professional at 21.

On July 21, 2013, as Grant prepared for the World Championship in Trento, Italy, he crashed. Grant’s accident was so severe that as he lay on the mountain road, he resigned himself to the reality that he would die – yet he lived. The doctors told him that he survived death, and in the hospital, Grant received a vision of a blank page, a message from God saying, “you’ve got a new story to tell.” Grant would then do the impossible by conquering the French Alps in under 50 hours, the French Pyrenees in less than 72 hours and the entire length of South Africa, despite having undergone 11 surgeries, including emergency cancer surgery. As an international motivational speaker and Laureus Sport for Good Ambassador, Grant’s commitment to God has taken his story to over 11 countries and 40 million people.

About this episode:

Hundreds of thousands of kids are being sold for sex in the US, every day in hotels, motels, houses, cars, and more. Originally met by charming predators in parks, shopping malls, and on social media, these young ones come from all walks of life. The number one crime against humanity does not know ethnic, religious, or socioeconomic boundaries.

Our girls, and now many boys too, are being groomed, tricked, and enslaved, largely for the pleasure of middle and upper-class family men. Where is this happening? How is it occurring? This story is one of the many. It’s a vast issue that occurs in every zip code in the country and impacts everyone. In this episode, J. Paul Nadeau interviews Michael about this horrible truth and about what parents can do to protect their children.

From Michael about his documentary: Making this film lit my fire for our children and propelled me into years of networking, interviewing, and researching. I spent time with survivor-victors, advocates, law enforcement, healers, ex-buyers, and ex-sellers, and the result is a ground-breaking TV series that I'm bringing forth this year with Brave Road Entertainment. Stay tuned on social media. It’s going to be big.

http://www.michaelmatucci.com/teens-4-sale

About Michael:

Michael is an agent of truth and transformation. Words and film are his tools, and he loves revealing the secrets of the game of life to leaders and inspirational people and empowering them to their highest light, impact, and potential. He uses his camera to project voices and stories of hope from marginalized people groups that show that the brightest lights often come from the darkest places.

After several years creating and producing intuitive projects on his own, he’s returning to crews and stages to bring forth an epic TV docuseries from the front lines of the movement to shift sex trafficking in North America.

It's not always easy to make a living as an artist. Never has been. Add on top of that challenges with mental health, depression, and addiction and you have a recipe for disaster. Or do you? Today's guest used those challenges and turned them into creative opportunities. He replaced setbacks with set-forths.

From Maury:

I am a field manager for a charity fundraising company and a published author of my very own graphic novel. I have canvassed for CAMH, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and was also in fact a patient there before making my recovery. I am well aware of the 75% increase in mental health and substance use challenges that have emerged since the start of the pandemic and have taken away many key tips for keeping our heads above water.

To expand a bit more on my artistic pursuits, the graphic novel I created entitled Flame is about an ex-army veteran who is fueled by adrenaline and takes down a powerful drug cartel with links to a nuclear terrorist group.

On a personal note, I really want to inspire people struggling with mental health. This project showed me how a diagnosis does not have to be a solo definition of who we are and how it can actually stimulate creativity. I was diagnosed with bipolar, then schizophrenia. I also had alcohol and drug issues and a history of violence and even arrests. I would love to share my story of perseverance because I believe these challenges motivated me to reinvent myself and pursue the passions that I dreamt of as a child. I think we all have a unique story to tell, which is key to motivation and self-worth. I would love to appear on your program and really enjoyed the Alam Ghafoor podcast!

Hosts note to Maury: Thanks, Maury, for sharing your inspiring story and for your vulnerable share. Keep up the great work.

*This episode contains graphic descriptions of violence and torture and is not recommended for all audiences.

Imagine being arrested by the 'secret police' in a foreign country, taken to a remote, secret location and then accused of being a terrorist bomber, tortured, degraded and held at the mercy of your torturous captors. Well, that's the true story you're about to hear.

From the media:

Alam Ghafoor was detained and tortured while on a business trip to Dubai following the London bombings in July 2005. Alam and his business partner, Mohammed Rafiq Siddique, flew to the UAE on July 4th of that year. They were dragged out of a restaurant as they dined on July 21st. The two British Muslims were then threatened with torture, deprived of sleep, subjected to stress positions and told they would be killed and fed to dogs.

Alam was eventually released without charge on July 30th, convinced that the individual to which consular officials were turning for permission to see him was a British intelligence officer. At the time of his interrogation, Alam was told that British security services had requested his detention and questioning.

Apparently MI5 and MI6 officers who question terrorism suspects they know are being tortured are apparently acting in line with a secret government interrogation policy, drawn up after the 9/11 attacks. The policy stated: "We cannot be party to such ill-treatment nor can we be seen to condone it" and that "it is important that you do not engage in any activity yourself that involves inhumane or degrading treatment of prisoners." It also advises intelligence officers that if detainees "are not within our custody or control, the law does not require you to intervene" to prevent torture.

When Alam asked why he had been arrested, he was shown a photograph and told he resembled one of the 7/7 suicide bombers and that he must be related to him. His business partner, Siddique, who was also detained and tortured, says he was told he must have been involved in the bombings – not only did he share a name with the bombers – but he lived in Dewsbury, the same Yorkshire town.

One interrogator said to him: "In the morning you will be thrown into a pit and the dogs will tear you to bits and I will watch it and enjoy it."

Eventually, he agreed to sign a false confession admitting he was a friend of the bombers and had organized the London attacks. "I wrote a false confession and put crazy things in it like 'I have constant contact with Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden'," he said. He was told he would be shot by a firing squad the following morning.

When Alam returned home, he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. His relationship with his partner broke down and he suffered nightmares, anxiety, and paranoia.

Today, Alam resides in the UK and his understanding of people and cultural differences make him a master negotiator. He is an advisor and consultant to CEO's, HNW clients, and Government agencies. His focus is on creating a better world and empowering the leaders of tomorrow.

For almost two years Arjan Erkel was held captive by masked Islamic rebels in Dagestan, Russia after being kidnapped for ransom. He was an anthropologist working for “Doctors without borders.” His unique story about survival, his quest for freedom, and his powerful recovery is inspiring. It reminds us that no matter what we are faced with, we can handle it. And we thought lockdown was tough.

Since then, Arjan has been speaking about his experience worldwide, giving workshops, and coaching, and he has inspired thousands of people with his message about freedom and taking ownership of your own life.

Arjan is also a Co-Founder of ‘Free a Girl,’ a foundation that is dedicated to freeing young girls from forced prostitution. Since 2008 they have freed and given a second chance to more than 4,750 girls globally.

From Arjan:

“I learned the hard way that I can surprise myself, surpass myself and have much more power and influence than I ever imagined.

From August 2002 to April 2004, armed and masked Muslim rebels in Dagestan imprisoned me under appalling conditions for 607 days. My hostage situation was a long battle against uncertainty, stress, lack of clarity, loneliness, despair and lack of confidence, security and comfort.

Every day could be my last. Soon I realized I had to do everything possible to make the best out of the situation I was in by looking for a connection with my kidnappers and by constantly reflecting on my own behavior.

Working on safety, trust, and possibilities instead of making it worse by negativism and hostility I challenged myself every day. I learned how to push my own boundaries. I learned what patience, discipline and perseverance really mean. But I also experienced what it is like to have no more tears left to cry. I have experienced what empathy can do between mutual relationships. It helped me survive”.

The Red Fred Project finds children living in extraordinary circumstances (rare diseases and life-threatening illnesses) and asks them the question: If you could write a book for the entire world to read, what would it be about? The stories they share are filled with humor, compassion and wisdom. The books they create together become a vehicle for these stories. They become a lasting voice, a tangible achievement for each child. As part of the proceeds from each book sold go to the family, or to a related cause chosen by the child, the books are also a way to help with financial difficulties. You see? The magic multiplies & lives on forever. You will be inspired by the talent and imagination of these children.

Is accountability important? What does it mean to hold yourself and others accountable? Join us as Robaire Nadeau, my brother and I talk about what it means to be accountable.

About Robaire:

Robert (”Robaire”) Nadeau, J.D., did his undergrad in philosophy, and his postgraduate degree in law at the University of Ottawa.

 He was called to the Ontario Bar in April 1985 and to the Nova Scotia Bar in 2007. (He hastens to add that, lest there be any misunderstanding, his affiliation with the “bar” began several years before that);

 He is currently a Partner at the legal firm of Kerr & Nadeau, with offices in Ottawa and Halifax.

 His practice includes: o Reviewing, drafting & negotiating commercial contracts of all kinds (including employment agreements, commercial leases, technology transfers, licenses, franchises, etc.);

o Employment (wrongful dismissal, human rights complaints, etc.);

o Commercial Lease reviews, negotiations & disputes;

o Negotiating & litigating business and contractual disputes.

 Among his claims to fame, Robaire was the lead negotiator representing the interests of the Information Technology Sector during the NAFTA negotiations (the trade deal President Trump didn’t like… and rightly so because we did kick their butts during the negotiations).

 Another claim to fame is that Robaire set a precedent at the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal in 2012 when his young female client was awarded the largest damages award granted by the Tribunal to that point in a Complaint of “sexual harassment” that did not involve physical contact.

When Robaire is not practicing law, he is either refining his skills as a mentalist; reading something or other in the history of philosophy or science; or Zooming and performing “magic tricks” with his daughter and two grandkids in Vancouver (Henrik 9 yrs., Vivienne 6 yrs.).

Something few people know about Robaire is that he performed his “State of Mind” mentalism act at “The Olive” in Las Vegas in 2012.

At the age of 4 due to negligence on the part of a daycare center, Kellina lost her hearing. In this episode, this young entrepreneur and emerging author speaks on what we can do to help make the deaf community more inclusive. Her energy is captivating and I enjoyed our chat, as I'm certain you will.

About Kellina:

Kellina is a young entrepreneur who loves to help people with their personal growth and educate others about the deaf community. Little do people know Kellina is actually a hard of hearing. She became deaf at the age of 4. She just graduated with a psychology degree and now into starting her own online coaching business and is working on finishing her book! You can find Kellina on Twitter, IG and her website listed below:

Twitter: cutiekellina

IG: Deafqueenboss

Website: www.deafqueenboss.club

What Kellina would like us to remember - from Kellina herself:

Please be respectful and mindful when you don’t know if the person has a disability. The best way to prevent any barriers is by saying am unaware of your disability how I can help? Not every disability is seen. Myself for example people would say wow no way your deaf. That is not a correct way to approach someone.

Sometimes you find yourself on a path you set out to be on, only to discover it was never meant to be. That's when 'choice' comes in. In this episode, Canadian actor Eric Hicks electrifies the waves with his powerful story of life discovery, peace, meditation, and joy. Yes - prepare to be inspired!

About Eric:

The middle child of Crawford, one of Canada's last remaining orthopedic shoemakers and mother Anita, a police officer and tattoo artist. His parents of English, Irish, Scottish and German ancestry raised him in the beautiful valley town of Lumsden, Saskatchewan.

Eric first caught interest in acting at the age of 8 while watching the film "The Garden" being shot in his family home. A year later he found himself with a small part on the Jamie Foxx movie "Held Up" (Trimark). Getting the chance to watch Jamie Foxx act and perform his own stunts changed Eric forever. His parents soon bought him a camcorder and he started making his own home videos. What started out as insane stunts to impress friends and family soon turned into a life long passion.

After graduating high school, Eric moved to Vancouver to study Prosthetics and Orthotics while pursuing acting, singing and dancing in his spare time. Two years later he entered the Canadian Model and Talent Convention and walked away with "Best TV Commercial" and "Overall Best Talent" awards as well as his first agent. Eric made the decision to put Prosthetics and Orthotics aside and move to Toronto to pursue acting full-time. Since then Eric has garnered world-wide attention having appeared in Quantico alongside Jake McLaughlin and Priyanka Chopra (ABC), "The Strain" (FX), "Reign" (CW), and in 2017 Eric was chosen to portray the recurring role of Constable D. Fox for 3 seasons of Daniel Grou's multi-award winning detective series "Cardinal" (CTV/eOne). Eric has recently portrayed real-life astronaut Dale Gardiner in the short film "Guion" and the main villain in the feature "A Christmas Catch" (HQ).

In 2016 Eric signed with Primary Wave Artists and now divides his time between Toronto, Vancouver and Los Angeles. His recent work playing Kim Coates mole as Detective Ken Tucker throughout all of Season two's epic multi-award winning gang drama "BadBlood" (CityTv) as well as film appearances in "White Night" alongside CFC alumni Kimberly Laferriere (21 Thunder) and "The Christmas Wedding Planner" (HQ) with Kelly Rutherford and Jocelyn Hudon have proven Eric to be a viable new actor on the rise.

The role of men has become more and more confusing over the years, with many men still being told to "man up" in the face of tough times and adversity. The "Take it like a man!" mentality often has severe consequences in this ever-changing world, with many men suffering for 'sucking it up.'

But what if men had a safe place they could turn to, to open up and be supported to be the best version of themselves for themselves, their significant others, their children, and everyone else? This episode explores this wonderful movement that encourages men to live the life they were meant to be and be the men they were meant to be.

About today's guest:

Jonathan is an advocate for Jack.org, Canada's leader in the movement for Youth Mental Health Education, the Founder and VP of Marketing at Project Circle Up -- a global community of Men's Circle's where men are challenged to become self-sufficient, find and live their purpose, and be the man they've always wanted to be -- and he works as a Keynote Speaker with clients like RBC, Ontario Power Generation and hundreds of schools across Canada to transform communities into safe spaces for mental health conversations.

When he's not speaking you can find him testing his hand at poetry, searching for a dance floor to embarrass himself on, or seeking out adventure abroad with his roommate and best friend, Chad Lennon.

"Inspire Us" introduces the "Inspire Us Kids" edition, where kids get to tell us about what they're going through.

In this first "Inspire Us Kids" Podcast, 12-yr-old Parker Smith and his mother Kacie talk about how Parker's life was severely affected by bullying and how a post on Instagram and Facebook changed everything. Parker had the courage to speak up. But as you'll hear in this episode, at first his voice was not heard. This episode speaks of the responsibility of responsible adults responding to the voice of children. It's a wake-up call, one we need to take seriously.

About Parker: Parker is your typical pre-teen with dreams and plans, just like the rest of us.

Sports are his life, according to his mom, Kacie.  He enjoys all sports but most of all loves softball.  He plays for a team in his small community, and his position is pitcher and outfielder.  When he is not out on the field he enjoys skateboarding and hanging out with his friends and family. When Parker grows up, he wants to become a humanitarian and help others who have gone through tough situations like his.

Enjoy this first "Inspire Us Kids" episode. Note: the sound is shotty at times, with some interference, but that happens. It's still very "listener-friendly." Let us know what you think about the kids' edition!

In this episode, Paul speaks with global clothier and multi-business success Antonio Mac.

Antonio started his business career back in 1997 with a company he still operates called Anthony M. Apparel. Over the past two decades, Antonio has built multiple companies all over the globe in the clothing and technology sectors, as well as in the marketing and PR firms in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Antonio is best known for his luxury Italian Brand, “Antonio Mac.” The company incorporated in Italy in the early 2000s and has gone on to become a globally recognized brand in both runway, luxury men’s and women’s couture and is currently launching a cosmetic line under the ANTONIO MAC brand.

Antonio has several self-help forums and podcasts with a goal not only to reach business-minded individuals, but those who need inspiration in their personal lives and relationships.

This busy CEO mostly spends his time building and scaling companies, consulting with small, medium, and large companies as well as Fortune 500 in North America and Europe. His true passion is to help others navigate their way through life.

In this episode, Antonio provides us with an insight into his world, from a young age when he was different than most other kids to how he used his creative mind to design sweaters that ultimately led to a global high-end apparel company. But there's more to Antonio than his clothing line. He was a pro golfer, a rock and roll star, and so much more.

Why is this important and inspiring during this pandemic? His drive should inspire each and every one of us to try new things, change our direction if it's not serving us, and to take risks. Many people are having to re-invent themselves these days because of circumstances not within their control (the COVID19 fallout), and Antonio's many accomplishments tell us that it can be done.

What she touches on is how, under extreme duress, one's body can simply shut down. One of the secrets to preventing that is to "stay busy," Sarah says.

Sarah's mission there caused her trauma, and one of the consequences of trauma is that it very often leads to "hiding." Many veterans who return home from war often hide and don’t tell people what they’re nightmares are, or tell others how they’re struggling emotionally, or mentally. Because for a lot of people who experience trauma or who have been emotionally abused - or as in Sarah’s case - have suffered PTSD, where it feels like your mental health is spiraling downward, it can feel like an embarrassing or shameful revelation, and the fear of being ignored or unsupported can be overwhelming. Again, it comes down to the stigma attached to opening up and asking for help.

In Sarah’s case, as you’ll hear, she didn’t receive the help or support she needed – nor did any of her team, once they returned from mission. The CIA did not offer her help, but, as you’ll hear, Sarah recognized her need for help and received it from her loving and supportive family as well as receiving professional help. She’s a survivor and has carried on serving to help others plan for any kind of disaster or evacuation – something she knows about, first hand. In these COVID19 times, having too much idle time on our hands can cause more anxiety and stress, and recognizing that you may be experiencing trauma is the first step to getting help.

Since leaving the CIA, Sarah has continued in public service with local government in the Seattle area as an emergency manager at the county and city levels, where she has specialized in all-hazards preparation, disaster response, and alert and warning.

She has published multiple articles and her first book, In the Dark of War, is now available. You can find out more about her at www.sarahMcarlson.com.

Twenty-two years ago, Stuart Knight did something courageous, daring and uncommon. He listened to his heart. It told him that too many people were not living up to their potential, and he decided to do something about it.

At the ripe age of 24, with no money or experience, he wrote an inspiring theatre show for teenagers. Within a short amount of time, it was picked up by Coca-Cola and toured nationally for three years.

From there he decided to become the first Canadian ever to write and star in a musical that he produced in his own loft. No small feat considering he couldn’t play an instrument. It became the longest-running play of its kind, and A-list influencers lined up to witness sold-out shows in a theatre Stuart not only built, but also lived in.

During that time, some of the world’s biggest business leaders recognized Stuart as a visionary who could help their organization reach new levels of success. Since then Stuart has been flown around the world, speaking in places such as Sydney, Malta, Edinburgh, Mumbai, New York, Frankfurt and Las Vegas helping Fortune 500 companies learn what it takes to be the best.

As Stuart Knight’s success flourished, he wanted to do something that would help raise thousands of dollars for charities around the world and decided to create the Top Ten Event, which is now one of Canada’s biggest speaking extravaganzas. The event has quickly grown into one of Canada’s must-see events, garnering over 30 million media impressions and has starred such names as Jim Cuddy, Deepa Mehta, Mary Walsh, Steven Page, and two-time Oscar Award Winner Jane Fonda.

On top of all of this, Stuart Knight is an award-winning entrepreneur, a critically acclaimed author of two books, an expert panelist on numerous television shows, the host of a hit radio show, has a sought-after podcast, and has over twelve thousand people from around the world tuning in each week to watch his thought-provoking videos online. As a disrupter, thought leader, and maverick, Stuart Knight has inspired over one million people to reach greater success, find deeper joy, and to ultimately boycott what they thought.

In this episode, Stuart joins Paul to share his ideas on a number of topics including how to make the best of this COVID19 pandemic.

In this episode, your host of Inspire Us, former hostage negotiator J. Paul Nadeau, chats with retired FBI agent and fellow hostage negotiator Gary Noesner. Gary reviews his role as one of the hostage negotiators involved in the tragic 1993 Waco Texas siege, that lasted 52 days involving David Koresh and members of the Branch Davidians. The outcome was tragic: 76 members of the Branch Davidians died in that crisis, and this event stresses the extreme importance of teams working together, whether within an organization or with others outside their organization. The lessons Gary shares in this episode are priceless. He also shares how this case impacted him and how he got through.

Gary has an impressive background, to say the least. He served more than 30 years as an FBI agent, and 26 of those years were served as a special agent. Gary continues to consult independently and has appeared on many television news broadcasts, documentaries, and has been featured in many publications.

His book, “Stalling for time – my life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator” is what inspired the popular TV mini-series, "Waco," now available on Netflix.

In this episode, Gary also shares his approach on how to avoid and resolve conflict in these troubling times, as well as how to truly connect with others to develop relationships of mutual respect and trust.

We've all experienced times when we've slipped into sadness or depression and we just didn't see it coming, or we just couldn't fight it off. Once we find ourselves in that dark place of depression or anxiety, is there a way we can find our way back to the light? How do some people handle life's stresses better than others?

In this episode, Paul talks about the importance of self-awareness and not giving in to the self-sabotaging voices in our heads that, if allowed to stay, will take us hostage and lock us in a cage of our own making. Awareness and mindset are keys to un-hostaging yourself once self-sabotage strikes. When you face your fears and worries head-on, you begin to disempower them. Take control of the moment and choose your response to whatever threatens your happiness and mental wellness.

Welcome to Inspire Us, with J. Paul Nadeau. I'm Paul. I'm delighted to have you join me on this journey.

I've been a guest on several wonderful podcasts and radio shows, including SiriusXM, where I've become a regular guest. I figured it was high time I start my own podcast not only to share my experiences but to share those of others who will join me as my guests.

I've lived a pretty interesting and exciting life so far and have worked as a Hostage Negotiator, International Peacekeeper, and Major Crimes Investigator to name but a few of the experiences I've had. I've also written a book called, "Take Control of Your Life" which HarperCollins so wonderfully published. My book is a guide on how to beat self-sabotage and live the life we so richly deserve to live. It's helping many deal with anxiety and depression and helping them take control.

My podcast will aim to do the same. We're living in tough times, aren't we? We certainly are, and like a good book, a hot cup of coffee, a wonderful meal, or any other pleasure that helps us escape this crazy world, listening to a good podcast can bring about a smile on our faces and challenge us to adjust our thinking. I'll endeavor to do that with my stories and experiences and those of my guests.

Thanks for joining me. Let's all be the light to help each of us live the lives we deserve.
