✔💖👍U Matter
It has been made very clear to me over the past few days what the positive impact that making somebody feel that they matter really has!
You can make others feel like they matter!
❓What do you feel like when you feel that 'U Matter' ? ❓What is it that others do to make you feel this way? ❓How do you make others feel like they matter?
For #Parents, #coaches, #teachers, #leaders...
Powerful and thought provoking questions for those looking to have a positive and profound impact on others (and themselves!)
Thanks Professor (dr.) Tony Ghaye for your great work in this area!
👀😎😍SAWUBONA
"I SEE YOU"
More Importantly " I see you as you are"
This is a common greeting in the #Zulu tribe in South Africa.
Sawubona symbolizes the importance of directing our attention to another person.
'I see you' has proved to be a very useful underpinning principle to the work I do as a developer of people.
You may like to consider...
❓How do you help 'others see you'? ❓How do you best 'Really see others'? ❓How could you develop and bring to life the principle of 'I see You' in the role you play to benefit you and others?
I want to take this opportunity to THANK all my past and current clients, colleagues and coachees for the work we have done together.
I am looking forward to continuing the great work, forging new partnerships and making a difference in the year ahead!
I SEE YOU (as best I can!) and I hope that you see me!!!👀👍👏😀
As always - drop me a line below to share your stories or contact me via the Sport Stories website.

Not maybe a word you would associate with leadership and work!? Read on and listen in as you may discover a connection...
Currently seems that we have all lost something recently.

"0perating in such a way that it is easy for others to see what actions are performed. Transparency implies openness, communication, and accountability"
What doe transparency mean to you? When has it been positive in the work place and why? What gets in you way of being transparent and how might you address this?

⁉💡↗CHOICES
The Dictionary definition for CHOICES is as follows. "the right or ability to choose" and " a range of possibilities from which one or more may be chosen"
Now if think about it in terms of how we turn up in the world and our individual levels of consciousness - we are ALL making choices ALL the time..
❓How conscious are you of the choices you make? ❓What guides the choices you make? ❓How do you sit with the idea you are totally responsible for everything you say, do and even feel?
I know that some people that I have worked with struggle with the idea that you CHOOSE the way you feel. What do you think?
This is such an interesting and powerful word and worth considering if you are striving to fulfil your potential and perform well in whatever you do.
Please make the choice and engage with previous SNAPSHOTS and reach out to me at www.sportstories247.com
and let me know what your greatest work and leadership challenge currently is.
✔👍💖GRATITUDE
" 1 Act of Gratitude will increase you happiness by 10%"
So what is GRATITUDE and WHY is it so important....
The Harvard Medical School says gratitude is:
“a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives … As a result, gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals–whether to other people, nature, or a higher power”
❓So what have you to lose?
❓What gets in your way of giving 'gratitude'?
❓How do you feel when on the receiving end?
✔What could you do today to capture your acts of Gratitude and reap the benefits?

I deal with it face on and have a discussion so everyone is clear.

OWNERSHIP
I have been fortunate to have had 2 great conversations with coaching clients today, and the underlying theme was OWNERSHIP.
OWNERSHIP of thoughts, behaviours, actions, decisions and attitudes.
I have reflected on my own practice and recognise this to be an integral part of what I do every day - or at least consider!
Some big questions.....
Take some time to consider what taking ownership of everything you do would mean? What would this mean for the decisions you take and the choices you take?
I would love to hear your views. Share them with the wider community! Take OMNERSHIP AND RESPONSIBILITY!

MY WHY
Simon Sinek has done some fabulous work on understanding your 'WHY' (If you are not familiar with it then have a look into it!)
I have been considering mine for some time and feel it is the right time to share it.... It currently works for me and in time might crystallise even further.
What is your WHY?
What is the trace you would like to leave?
How does knowing and articulating what is important to you motivate and inspire you?
If you are not sure - how might you further consider your why?
For those interested My WHY - it is as follows...
“To inspire people to do the things that inspire them and leave the world better than I found it. And specifically, I want to help people find and do more meaningful work. I want to help people relieve their chronic work anxiety by helping them see patterns in their story, so they can design their lifestyle around the work they have always wanted to do. I want to be remembered by the people whose lives I have touched as a force for good in their lives.”
I am sharing it (not to be self indulgent!) because I want to demonstrate what meaningful work is for me and I want to inspire you to consider and work out what your why is....
Please drop me a line if you would value some coaching to identify and bring to life your why?
Feel free to share your why in the comments below....

An incredibly open, honest and vulnerable conversation where Simon shares in his calm and humble way his story from being a passionate sports person and having an early career as a sport teacher right through to bringing Brazilian style football principles to the UK as well as influencing football worldwide, consulting on films and working with some of the most famous footballers the world has seen.
In his own words he was a ‘man with a mission’. This brought its highs as well as its lows. In my mind Simon is a student of football as well as life and gives great insight into how you can rise from hitting rock bottom. He gives living proof you can change the way you approach your life if you take responsibility and action.
It is a heartfelt story that will definitely make you think about who you are, what you do, how you do it and ultimately what success is in life and sport.
It was a real privilege and honour to have Simon as the 50th Sport Stories Podcast guest. A must listen!!!

Success quotes or sayings:
Middlesbrough and football were my love at a very early age.
Due to an experience of being ‘dropped’ I decided to take up something that was just reliant on the watch (running)
My hero was Terry Cochrane - as a footballer he liked to run at people and take them on. I therefore saw football as running at people and taking them on was the way to play football (not everybody liked this!)
I decided to take up Athletics – but wasn’t very good or by any means the fastest.
After a knock back of not being included in the school cross country team – I become very determined.
At times I wish I had carried on with football but Athletics taught me a life lesson – implementing key performance principles consistently and routinely irrespective of talent will get you somewhere.
Stoics and Spartans
I enjoyed reading from a young age and finding out about people and their lives
My edge for training dropped at university but I threw myself into my studies
I applied the principles developed in my early years and gained a 1stt in my degree. If you apply yourself to things you find hard and work at them – you can be successful.
I became a teacher – a bit by default. I re discovered my interest and passion for football (and coaching) by taking the U8,9,10, 11 in the school I worked at.
I became great friends with Juninho when he played at Middlesbrough due to a shared love of football.
I was not satisfied in ‘dishing up for them’ what everyone else did. I wanted to find out the best way and provide it where I could
I wanted the absolute best. I hunted here there and everywhere for those children
Being the best was my attitude to sport for many years – it wouldn’t be today.
I looked back into the history of sport. I really liked working hard and winning. This view has changed as the years went on
It was an amazing 5-6 weeks in Brazil….
The detail and work ethic in Brazil was clear to see and was not what I was led to believe it would be (people just playing on the beach)
Coe had intrigued me as he was an early user of sport science and built a team around him. Brazil had better psychology services as far back as 1958… then we have had up until 2014 ish World Cup.
When I started on the Brazilian journey I was a school teacher/ good person. I was though a man on a mission when returning.
My character changed and my ego got in the way.
I had to win and dominate …..but it was never enough really!
All the business success – not of it is any good if you are not happy with yourself
I set up a preschool programme, and also bought a football club.
Nothing exists in vacuum and things changed
I then went on a mini adventure with Sir Clive Woodward working at Southampton FC
My why wasn’t a healthy one – it was to show I could achieve
I took on the establishment of football
I had some big ‘ding dongs’ with the FA. I fronted it ok but it had an effect on me (negatively)
I had some real highs working with Garforth Town
Towards the end of 2000’s my mental health was deteriorating
The things I had enjoyed in the beginning I had stopped doing – the coaching!
I wrote a few books and consulted on Movies, and things were going off on different tangents. The scope and level all become too much for me.
I had stopped enjoying it and started drinking to self-medicate. It was a long spiral down.
At my lowest ebb in 2012 – sold everything to Rupert Lowe
My health and family life were not good at the time.
I wasn’t in a rational state of mind for quite some time. I wasn’t sure how much longer I would live!
In recovery – 18 months not working. Took stocked of everything. Where I had been and what my priorities were.
In many cases in life - from some of the worst times of your life - come the best.
Strategies I used – taking help and listening to other people (which I hadn’t done before)
Ego had become my enemy – the more successful I had got the less I listened.
I was at ground zero. I had to recognise and come to terms with the fact my own thinking and actions had got me to the position I was in.
It’s been 8 yrs or so since ground zero – I have had the happiest and best years of my life in every respect
Proudest moments – I beat Seb Coe before I packed in (over 100 meters), Overcoming challenges within my degree, Taking 53 kids from Leeds out to Brazil (1998)
Winning football matches is intoxicating and see players that you work with – play well!
I really value being part of the Coaching chain ot many players.
Things I enjoy most today is continuing to work on myself and my learning as well as encouraging others in their development and learning.
I don’t want to get caught in the highs and lows anymore.
My personal philosophy is that football is a game for fun.
We could lose the essence of the sport itself and the history and traditions.
I would love to engage with some working-class communities or areas with less provision. They seem to be getting distanced and disenfranchised with the sport. I would love to do something alter in my life if I could.
I am a pupil myself. My passion for football came back after a year or so.
Initially I blamed football for some of my problems. My problems were all of my own making.
Almost every life lesson you can get out of sport. Sport is amazing!!
Take the harder and longer route. Don’t cut corners, You will learn more!
There are so many factors involved in achieving success.
Learning in wonderful. For me learning is linked to happiness.
I didn’t intend to be an entrepreneur.
How could I get more people playing this way. More focus on the ball. More creative. More imaginative.
I used to turn to old biographies for business tips. For example, Walt Disney. Do what you love and what you are passionate about.
If I had my time again I would get business mentors and people around me to keep me in check and good order.
Get older and more experienced people around you – particularly people who don’t say what you want them to and will challenge you.
Based on Jim Rohn quote – ‘Spend more time working on yourself than working’
I spend a lot of my time writing informally as well as journaling.
Quote by Elbert Hubbard: Self-discipline is - ‘The ability to make yourself do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not’
Success is…
Number 1 - Make a list each day of the things that must be done.
Number 2 – Do the things on that list
Don’t make footballers – make good people.
If ego is the enemy – continue to work on yourself, practice self-awareness and reflection. Taka counsel of those around you - how are you doing and how are you behaving. Have a mentor that is comfortable to challenge and possibly fall out with you.

Success quotes or sayings:
Talent pathways need multiple opportunity points.
Through my own experiences I have an interest and passion for talent development and especially late developers
I was surrounded by people who knew more than me – so wanted to know more!
I developed an obsession with the sport.
If couldn’t get the experience then I would make it
I sent my CV to every Rugby League club as I wanted a job in development.
Don’t worry about being cheap (not being paid a great deal) at the start [of your career]. It will change in time
Go where you can get the opportunity.
There have been many times I have sat their and gone ‘how have I got this (job)?’
There were time I felt desperately out of my depth
Your qualification may say you have the ability to get you through the door – but its not that, that gets you through the door. Its all the other stuff that you are willing to do
Sport is a pastime that millions love – so it becomes competitive.
You have to make yourself stand out from the crowd through your own efforts.
My work ethic stood me out – nobody was working harder at it than me.
The better you get the more chance you have of being lucky
Imposter syndrome has always been and issues and is still and issue now.
Be confident in what you do know – put forward what you know and don’t blag or lie.
Develop great people skills
He frames it as ‘he is a 100 cap international at thinking about what he does’
Listen to people you don’t agree with and develop an understanding of why they think ‘that’
You have got to be really comfortable with mistakes and let them happen
If you try to stop every mistake you are killing learning left right and centre.
Courtesy of David Faulkner – Fail Fast. Try something, recognise when it’s not going right and change it.
Make mistakes with the best of intentions.
Talent development is like ‘Indiana Jones trying to find the Holy Grail’.
There is no single answer to how to produce world class athletes.
The questions I always ask is -Why (the rationale) and how you going to do it? Never you cant!
Much more important than the rules are the KEY/CORE PRINCIPLES
Will what we do make the player better or the environment in which the player sits better?
I build a philosophy around happiness and contentment.
He opportunity at the Women’s FA was a ‘miss it and miss out opportunity’.
I left with no bridges burnt at the RFL - as I may need or want to go back at some stage
I found out about people – do my reading. If there is a source of knowledge then I know to ask lots of questions.
I work to a core principle – you are either ALL in or you’re not. If you are all in then give everything you have got.
Do what makes you happy – we all want to jump out of bed in the morning with a spring in our step.
Some of the stories I can tell and experiences I have had are astonishing – go an make them!
My work ethic is getting me somewhere – possibly beyond what I thought my talent deserves. I will take it though.
Talent development and Talent Id is like panning for gold. A lot of sifting is required to find what you are looking for
The vast majority of the academy managers job is to manage disappointment as 98% of the players in the system will likely not fulfil their dreams
I hurts me when I hear about broken players – I see it as the journey has not been managed very well
Be open to how your story ends – write your own chapters.
As soon as you are not happy you have to look at what is your next step
If you get everybody using their skill sets and everyone is happy then that is when the organisation or team will really start to fly
Happy people work well – constrained people never do
I have a notebook where I write down peoples names and details about them, so when I speak with them I have something to speak and connect with them on.
I have been known to wear my feelings on my face – it has caused me problems in the past.
Enjoy yourself along the way because when you get ‘there’ it might not be what you’d though it would be.
Happier now than I have ever been but 10 years ago couldn’t see as far as next week – it was a deeply difficult time.
Back then when I hit the ‘bottom’ I put my hand up and asked for help
Mental Health challenges - Trying to be something for another reason

3
What would you do if there was no such thing as money? How would you fill your time? (Based on the work of Alan Watts - Do what makes you happy!)
4
If none of us are ‘getting out of this alive’ then we want to look back on some great experiences. What are the great experiences you would like to have and what do you need to do to make them happen?
5
Who is your role model and how do they help you learn and develop?

Success quotes or sayings:
“When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world.
I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation.
When I found I couldn’t change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn’t change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family.
Now, as an old man, I realise the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realise that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world.”
There is a lot in life when you get told no...get told no again …and you get told no again. Keep going and use all interactions as feedback.
I am always trying to learn and immerse myself in their stories. They tell stories and do not teach lessons. Through the stories we learn lessons.
A variety of course and content
Look ‘off the beaten path’
Learn from all environments and contexts.
Being aware of my prejudgements and biases. Everybody has prejudices and biases!
I can only comment on my path.
3 significant losses – lost a child, and mum and mother-in-law within 3 weeks.
Looking to understand the whole person really and fully.
View things in a positive way.
I wasn’t depressed I was going through grief.
Trying to smile about things that have happened. Looking forward. Look for the next thing that will make you smile.
The is a huge amount of this (life) that we are making up as we go along.

We are desperately trying not to ‘Reinvent the wheel’
Looking through a free lens – not having to deal with some previous cultures and baggage
The books that you would recommend are?
From a non fiction perspective; I enjoy the books by Malcolm Gladwell, Matthew Syed and Michael Lewis
In no particular order and not limited to:
In one sentence – What advice would you give to your teenage version of yourself?

A fabulous and insightful discussion with Former England Rugby Union Head Coach – Brian Ashton - who would describe himself as ‘rebellious’ and someone keen to push boundaries for peak performance.
We explored the idea of VUCA coaching and followed the energy of the conversation. In the spirit of not being constrained by boundaries and limitations of belief we covered some real ground and jumped around. It was a huge amount of fun full of ‘intrigue’ and ‘mystery’.
This is well worth an hour of your time. It has a rugby union flavour yet there are so many key principles and ideas relevant to other sports, coaching, leadership, business and life in general.

Success quotes or sayings:
I am a child of the 50’s – Street Games
Adolescent of the rebellious 60’s
Teacher of History
Played in France and Italy - provided a great insight into rugby and life. Exposed to different cultures
Explore the term VUCA coaching
Kevin Roberts was a close mentor and friend and introduced the phrase - VUCA - to him
(Military foundations)
Survive - Revive – Thrive
Many sports could be classed as VUCA games
Or could VUCA mean… (from Stanford Uni) This could be SUPER
Coaching clichés for example - there is no space?
These are often ideas and stories for people to hide behind when things go wrong?
Constantly practicing the notion of impossibility
‘We were very self-reliant and self-sufficient, and we found a way of doing things’
Over time developed a mentality of finding a way and believing anything is possible
Having a growth mindset and accepting personal challenge as part of your DNA
What may be stopping people – FEAR!
Create this vibrant ‘family’ environment as arguably this is the strongest bond we have
This is environment and set up is very difficult for the opposition to play against and fantastic fun.
Nothing more exciting then doing something different and seeing it working.
Crazy coaches – take the ‘impossible’ notions and make them work. Good example is Dick Fosbury
Crazy coaches have a ‘changing mindset’
World class coaches or world changing coaches?
When I started I was the very opposite to a super VUCA coach
In my early days in the classroom I taught the subject and not the pupils and as a coach I coached the game and not the players. So, I had no emotional connection [to the learners/players]
I sort out Pierre Villepreux and spoke with him. I ultimately spent a great deal of time with him.
The easy way is to tell people what to do but you only get short term results and will have to probably tell them again.
I brought him over because he was better than me. It was brave doing this.
He has a much more holistic and global approach to his coaching. He coached from the game itself
I developed a much more outcome-based approach to my coaching and tapped into the knowledge of the people and players around me.
There still seems to be a fear of seeming not ALL knowledgeable - Omniscient (Knowing everything)
A team that played for a whole season without kicking the ball
Wayne Smith - ex All Blacks Coach
“ It’s the way you run the race not the way you win it that counts !” Get the processes right.
Super VUCA coaches – you do not ignore the fundamental basics of peak performance when coaching. They underpin. Its how you fit them in.
Develop game intelligence and mental robustness and agility in order to be a ‘Super VUCA’ coach
Need to focus on 2 things..
My purpose as a Rugby Coach was – Play to win by scoring tries
Pep Guardiola quotes as saying ‘When the players cross that white line, they take control of everything that happens next’
‘Prescriptive leads to restrictive’
Need to get these 3 things right – Responsibility, Ownership and Leadership – then can give them the Freedom
Enjoyment underpins everything
Dan Carter said “We have got to keep the fun in the game or we will all go stale”
The uncertainty is really exciting.
The All Blacks do work incredibly hard to sustain excellence whilst off the pitch are laid back and ‘chilled’
Sir Graham Henry – “I arm my players with intent and step aside as the week goes on”
There are no fancy ideas in New Zealand Rugby – They play with clarity and simplicity and are given the freedom to play. They coach game intelligence from day 1
Quick fire questions:
How do you describe yourself as a coach?
Change the way the game is played – is my raison d’etre
ad infinitum, et ultra (to infinity and beyond)
In one sentence – What advice would you give to your teenage version of yourself?
Make the best of what you have got
Keep improving all the time
As a coach - Recognise you are on the planet to help other people
Lead from the shadows
Who has made a big impact on you?
Pierre Villepreux
Wayne Smith
Coaching questions I would like to pose:
1
In your work and home life – what phrase or belief are currently hiding behind to reinforce your view of the world and holding you back from what you can achieve?
2
Brian mention FEAR may be stopping people – what is your relationship to fear? What are you fearful of in work and at home that is stopping you maximise you impact and not bringing your creativity to life? What do you need to do..?
3
Where could you access or invite somebody better that you into your world to help you improve? What is stopping you?
4
What are the fundamental basics of Peak Performance in your life? How do you fit these together? How could you do more or differently to maximise your impact and performance?

Success quotes or sayings:
A message from parents –
“Give maximum effort at all times”
“There is no such thing as can’t”
Loved sport but was rubbish at them
I got friendship, trying something new from sport
Age 11 - feet started to hurt whilst running
Age 13 - pain effected mobility
Aged 16 - received diagnosis : Complex Regional Pain syndrome
Really tough in teenage years – didn’t know who I was but did have big dreams.
Disability – under represented and mis represented.
I feared that people would not see past the disability and see the value that lay within me.
My family did not let me take it easy – this really helped me in understanding and appreciating where my limits were.
In adversity we always have a choice – give up or get up!
The ‘mental side’ runs pretty much through everything.
Sport provides and distraction from the pain and with the adrenalin rush it becomes more removed.
The mind is so important and if you get that right - everything else will follow
Your physical limits are so further on than you often think
Not very good to GB team in 3 years
Really listening to coaches helped. Bounce ideas off them really helped me mature as a person
My real strength was the mental side – dealing with pressure
‘I would really recommend that people invest in themselves – their personal development”
I have literally ‘copied and pasted [the skills, attributes and behaviours] what I use in sport ”
“Sport has been one of my greatest teachers – it has taught me about myself. I have learnt what I am good at and where my strengths are, as well as the areas for challenge and areas to improve on”
Cut and paste – confidence, self-belief, resilience, goal setting
Ask/consider these questions: Who you are? Why doing what you are doing? Where do you want to go and what you do you want to achieve? How are you going to get there and by when?
I built my confidence by people believing in me and re defining my measure of success and focussing on the tiny wins/successes not the big gold medal winning acheivements
I got to where I got in sport because people helped me.
Keen on working with girls and women – specific challenges with great ‘potential’.
I see that the barriers and limitations we often face stem from childhood.
My mum said – “we will support you all the way but you have to put in 100% commitment” You make your choice – you can’t just drop out a couple of months down the line.
Taking a hard performance angle and softening it round the edges to engage with people.

“Its perfectly normal to have doubt and perfectly normal to think you have it sussed”
A powerful, purposeful, insightful and honest view in to the journey Christophe has taken to being one of the best Rugby Union Referees in the world.
He openly shares his thoughts and experiences form childhood right through to what goes on for him on match day in the 6 Nations. He has a quiet arrogance yet continues to question himself and his ability.
He is a shining example of somebody maximising his potential and who has a thirst for learning and a deep curiosity of people and how they interact. His view as are not theoretical - they are real and applied.
It is truly a fascinating conversation and there are many take aways if you are looking to maximise your potential in whatever you do.

Success quotes or sayings:
There is a small bit of Refereeing in the DNA
I was looking for a sport I could be more than good at
At the age of 12 my farther had the discussion with me about what route to take to be ‘successful’
I got some ‘purpose’ early on which has probably led to the success I have had
My super strength was – I was particularly good at contact sport
I don’t believe you can teach someone to be brave – you can be exposed to environments to become more resilient.
I am drawn to people who are ‘very strong’. I like that strong firm behaviour.
My dad is a very firm character and assertive. He is very practical in how he faces things.
I wish I was more interested in my academics as I think I missed a trick there.
It wasn’t I became more interested in learning it was that I was READY to learn ( in a more formal way!)
I have a specific interest in the way people interact
I want to coach on a deeper level – I want to be involved in the whole process of developing the person
I am just absorbed by behaviours
You have to accept that you are not there to be liked and not there to make friends
If know one talks to you or about you, you have done a good job. It comes with little external gratification. My goal is now to not be spoken about.
My gratification comes from a ‘quiet arrogance’
Those three things are written down and I have them with me in my changing room to remind me why I am here.
I am consciously and constantly surrounding myself with experts. I am looking to gain and transfer skills from all walks of life
I am aware that it is never ending and I need to be constantly aware that I have something to learn
People say - you are an average of the people you associate yourself with.
Show me your friends and I will show you your future
Planned with Pure authenticity
There is a risk of over planning and over scripting
As a new, young looking referee I really planned and was conscious to be ‘business like’
I have lots of scars and learnt those things early
Making these [performance] habits makes you world class at what you deliver. The habits are something you live and breathe. It is a constant. Its relentless. It is Full time – not something you can dabble in and out of.
There is no perfect performance. I want to reach my max capacity
Managing through the low times – I acknowledge there would be low times
I prepared for what I would do if I got it really wrong.
I would have a brutally honest review culture with myself
By being honest when things go wrong can increase your cudos
When you get it wrong it has to be on the other persons terms
I absorbed lots of information from lots of different events (reference and learning points)
I am constantly building a picture of what it is to deal with people effectively
Curiosity and absorbing are strategies for development.
I am very very nosey
I have a child like mind in terms of how I am curious
I also have imposter syndrome every week – that’s normal!
Its perfectly normal to have doubt and perfectly normal to think you have it sussed.
Your identity is your consistent behaviours and performances (week to week)
I always trust people until they give me a reason not to trust them
Highlights can be more than just ‘your best moment’
Part of being world class is sometimes doing ‘nothing’ or doing ‘something else’
Have sharp tools and not blunt armour
Quick fire questions:
The books that you would recommend are?
The Chimp Paradox: The Mind Management Programme to Help You Achieve Success, Confidence and Happiness by Dr Steve Peters

Whos’ Sport Story would you be really interested in hearing?
Anthony Joshua

Coaching questions I would like to pose:
1
If people say you are an average of the people you associate yourself with then what would your average be?

An amazingly heartfelt, open and honest insight into what it was like for Sarah developing her career in sport. Really enjoying school and seeing it as a safe and happy place, through being a women in a predominantly male football environment and then making some huge decisions to leave the FA and join another sport (netball) as a Performance Coach Developer.

An amazing insight in Karen’s involvement in 6 Olympic Games whilst not enjoying being in the spotlight. She openly shares the highs and lows of a life-time in sport, building teams and getting the best from individuals, managing the transition from player to coach and lifestyle choices.
Karen, in a very humble and clear way, shares her journey, offering some amazing pieces of advice in how she has been so successful. It is a truly brilliant opportunity for parents, teachers, coaches and leaders to learn from a successful women in sport who truly has a passion for helping people and in turn putting them in the spotlight.
This is a bit more about Karen…
Karen Brown MBE is a former field hockey defender, who was a member of the British squad that won the bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Commonwealth Silver medal and European Gold Brown is England and Great Britain's second-highest capped player of all time, with 355 caps to her name.

Key quotes, saying and comments :
I was aware the I was talented at the age of 4 or 5. I could do things others couldn’t
Mr Shawney (Teacher at School) – “Karen – whichever sport you choose you will play for England at it!”
The feeling coming back to me when making my debut for England at Hockey (at Wembley)
As an athlete I was driven by fear of failure?
I had many doubts about myself – it evoked fear
Started coaching in schools with your kids
I learnt - There is nothing wrong in telling people they CAN do things and giving them time and focus – there is a tendency to lean towards what people cant do and only helping them.
Tell people – you do realise you are really good at this. You have a special talent!
There weren’t the avenues for talented girls in sport that are available today
An fortuitous opportunity arose to play with the School Hockey 1st team
My dad said – you will like that, you will enjoy that (going to the county Hockey tournament)
Within 4 months - not playing the sport through to paying for England U18’s (aged 16yrs)
At a young age don’t specialise in any one sport
I learnt from athletics that I wanted to be part of a team *
Really explore – find your niche – don’t be restricted and try things out
The culture behind the sport was so important for me
You can take bits of learning from everything and apply it in other parts of your life *
You can’t learn from it unless you give it a go *
I was far more conscious of what I could do rather than what I couldn’t
It felt like it came quite naturally and that I didn’t work hard at it (though I did infact work hard)
It didn’t feel like hard work – I was just really curious about it and what could and would happen if I did….
I was always curious about exploring different ways of doing things
I developed technical skill through practice but it felt like fun (playing about in the fields around where I lived)
The importance of the cues you get from your environment and surroundings in early years
Senior debut in 1984
Unfairness and equal opportunities playing out – 6 teams for the women and 12 for the men
First Olympics in 1988
The disappointments earlier on in my career shaped
Highlight of playing career – qualifying for Seoul in 1988 by beating Russia in best of 3 games
I didn’t know my dad had represented GB at the Olympics until I was about 14yrs
Trained with Zola Budd
I have always been fascinated by the Olympics – all the sports!!
I took time to reflect on the lows and earnt from them
Building and developing year on year
Recognising the importance of winning the game as part of the broader process/journey
I learnt – no to dwell to much about what has gone in the past
The importance of being able to ‘shut the door’ on one part of the process and move on to the new
You have to debrief really well to enable yourself to ‘shut the door’ and move on. At team, personal and team within the team level
Capture what would I do differently should I have this opportunity again. THAT’S THE GOLD DUST
Asking myself – how did I deliver against those responsibilities
I’ve learnt – don’t ever ask an athlete (especially under pressure ie in Olmpics) to do something (a tactic or technique) that you have never seen them do before
In many ways – under high pressure go back to basics. Only do things you know can be done under pressure and has therefore been done before.
Stick to judgement not luck!
Great principles - We trained harder than what we thought it would be on a match day
We spend a lot of time on ‘how do you train the brain’. EG How do you want to feel and what do you want to think when….
Pulling out of them with questions - Often solving a problem for an athlete in the moment but saving a bigger problem for later by not developing them
Transitioned as a coach from more tell to nowdays much more self-discovery and go on a journey together.
You have to know the person (athlete) in front of you.
It is a coaches job (or leader, teacher) to flex their style and connect with the individuals that make up that team
Show me how to do it then let me have a go and I will get it really quickly. (Great learning theory and approaches)
Fantastic example of situational leadership (Skill Development Journey)
I love what I do and am incredibly fortunate to do what I do.
One of my key values is that I like helping people
I don’t like being in the spotlight but like playing my part in putting others in the spotlight
I was privileged to be asked to be captain of England – and turned it down.
I think my skill sets and what I would prefer to be are..
I love working behind the scenes but wouldn’t choose to get up on the pedestal
Happy people perform better * The happier I am the better I will do my job*
Its really important to really understand the ‘game’ that you are playing in
The journey needs to be so much more than just the outcome, its got to be bigger then that, its got to be about how they (we) grow as individuals
If you have never tried it then you will not know what the result will be
One of the traits I look for in athletes is, are they curious and do they really/truly want to improve
I get a real buzz seeing people develop
I am a believer in displaying the behaviours you want to see in others
I learnt that if I felt right I would think right. The feeling had to come before the thought
Take people back to ‘when did it all feel effortless’
My manager went so against the grain – he explored what was best for the customer. I serve the customer not the organisation. As a result the customers trusted him

Success Quote or saying:
Meandered through life…
My father created a competitive culture in which I grew up
“You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever." Steve Jobs.
Working in sport and Human rights has been my happiest work time
I saw and experienced the social injustice play out
Came out at the age of 20-21 yrs
The desire to want to also have a family
It took me a number of years to consider and explore what possibilities were and are available to me in life. (14 – early/mid 20’s)
Average age of coming out is now 15/16yrs old due to less ‘shame’ and ‘silence’ attached.
I got feminism at University. Studies Sociology.
We were ‘misfits’ and gravitated to each other.
Did lots of Volunteering which then lead to paid roles
Women’s centre admin to housing and homelessness.
The common theme was ‘I wanted to do things that made a difference’.
Joined Hockey team at University but found it really difficult. Don’t ask and don’t tell kind of atmosphere!
With analysis and understanding I can make sense
The ‘difference’ between ‘sport lesbians’ and ‘feminist lesbians’
The ability just to BE. We were able just to be.
Things change in the world of work…so I asked myself what can I do that would get my mojo back?
I was getting drawn into sport.
City tournaments all around Europe – sport events for LGBT community (Pride Games)
Enthusiastic and inspired by new ideas. We have always got great ideas here…! (Football v Homophobia)
If I believe in something I will run with the idea
The coming together of ‘art’ and ‘sport’
It has not been an easy gig. It has been a slog at times.
It is important for me as a person to be not ‘too much in my head’
I need to be grounded in some getting my hands dirty as a person
I am lucky to have a wide diversity of roles (filling envelopes to opening conferences)
I have been doing it so long now I can see the changes
It is really nice to be thanked
Moved from feeling threatened to working alongside
During the hard times I pull myself through by talking to people – getting perspective.
There is nothing as brilliant as getting out of breath.
Ground breaker? We have broken ground….!
The threat is that we are quite an invisible minority.
We are living in strange times. Some countries have gone backwards in terms of Human Rights
Conscious of the reversibility of inclusion and human rights
We will always be a minority and fight for our voices to be heard
Football v Homophobia month of action (February)
Don’t be afraid to ask for advice. We can get caught up as leaders and coaches NOT asking for help and support.
I will look back on this conversation and will have definitely got something from it myself
Quick fire questions:
What resources would you recommend?
The best resources we have are the people around us. Talking things through always gives just the most amazing perspectives
Some people read lots of books – I am not one of those types of people
What advice would you give to your teenage version of yourself?
Take a big deep breath.
You will grow into yourself and therefore don’t panic
It will all be alright
You are more resilient than you know
Trust and enjoy the process of developing
Whos’ Sport Story would you be really interested in hearing?
Veronica Ivory – Canadian Transgender cyclist
Coaching questions I would like to pose:
1
How do the dot join up or join back in order for you to make sense of your life so far to inform your future?
2
When have you been in a minority group or community? How did you feel? I wonder what it would be like considering the perspective from both the majority and minority perspective? What may you do differently as a result?

A winding and wonderful journey through football. Gain a fantastic and realistic insight in what striving to be a professional footballer has been like for Nicho. He openly shares some of the highlights and lowlights (as well as some great tips!) from turning professional in 1997 through to developing players and coaches for the future.
He played at all levels of the game over a long period of time and has also experienced the game of football through the perspectives of Player, Coach, Head of Coaching, Manager and Parent.
Nicho is currently Head of Coaching at Exeter City where they are doing some great work in developing young footballers and people.
This is a great listen if you are a young player, parent, teacher, coach or leader. Nichos story will make you think and consider your philosophy, values, beliefs and ultimately what is important to you and how do you get there (or help others get there!)

School Sports Coordinator to Sports Policy maker and talent development coach. The very authentic and heart-warming story of the highs and lows of the journey Lucy has been on. Dealing with the labels attributed to her all the way through to how her previous life experiences really inform and educate her around the work and impact she is now having. A brilliant discussion peeling back the onion layers and getting a deep insight into her process and how she has managed her dyslexia and autism. Listen deeply and take action – Lucy is truly a giver with a very genuine style and offers some fantastic guidance and advice!
This is how she would describe herself….
Approaching life with a slightly geeky earnest enthusiasm. Sports development and coaching specialist. Passionate about supporting people and helping them to be the best they can be. Love learning and currently working to complete my Doctorate. All round sporty person, with main interests including hockey (coaching and playing), visiting the gym (when not in a pandemic) and training for my first (and last) IronMan triathlon. Enjoy languages and like finding ways to improve my Spanish, French and German (none of which are any good, but that’s not the point). Blue Peter badge owner. Neurodivergent person: dyslexic and Autism Spectrum Disorder (which sounds too pathologised for me, used to be called Aspergers – but that doesn’t really exist as a diagnosis anymore, we all get labelled ASD). Big fan of a “ham-cheese-avocado-ready salted crisp” sandwich.
Favourite quote: “Be brave and curious, not fearful and suspicious” - Eddie Izzard

Success Quote or saying:
4 key principles:
(Cath Bishops words)
Independent play and being wild and free as a young person
As a young person - Realising that I was a girl and how the precluded me from certain activities
Early sporting memory seeing women playing Rugby next to Twickenham and why not in the stadium
I hated the word – Tomboy. Created a distinction between boys things and girls things
Started playing Hockey – an immediate feeling of I could do it – fell in love with it
Being capable enough at sports allowed me to have friends given I had lot of other things going on for me (autism and dyslexia)
Structured sport allowed me to be popular and have friends
Diagnosed autism and dyslexia only in my 20’s
Hockey really makes my mind go silent
Sports participation connected to the feeling and the mind (Hockey really does this for Lucy)
Recognised the positive and negative impact sport had on her mental well being
Don’t realise how important things are until they are gone.
Real great interest in neurodiversity and who I am, What I am and What I do?
Terrible County Hockey selection experiences have underpinned my philosophy and approach to talent development
The personal diaries tell the story as it was then
The powerfulness of reading about my younger self – young people are really attuned to what is going on. They have a memory of their experiences.
The experiences that took her down the coaching route
There is an ego/voice that takes me off to want to right all the wrongs that happened to me.
I found success and felt good at helping people
The little things often make the big differences for me
I come from a place where I see people as resourceful and not deficient
I start from a place where I want them to flourish
Through significant ruminating and therapy I now care less about what people think.
We are flawed like everybody else
The real work is in your own mind….
Metaphor: Earthquakes v tectonic plates moving all the time
As a coach you only have one part of the story…..you have to therefore stay curious
I threw myself into work – collecting work – but ended up full up. It became an Ego thing.
I made some significant changes…..and yet the world didn’t end.
I was harder and more disciplined with myself and gave permission to take breaks
Put your own oxygen mask on first
Just because you are good at something doesn’t mean you like it and just because somebody else wants you to do something doesn’t mean you should. Just because you say no to somebody and they don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s a bad decision.
I am and always will be an empath and pulled towards helping people.
My strategies are based on the situation and circumstances
It helps having other priorities in my life
Ask myself who is this for? Is it for me and my benefit? Is it aligned to my direction of not?
There isn’t a shortage of people who want to take a different approach to people/coaches within the sport system
I like to flit between different roles from strategic to practical/applied and operational
A lived reality of the different layers of sport
Do we really appreciate the individual impact policy makers have on the wider sporting world?
Small changes can and do have a big ripple effect
Don’t miss out – what you did for free, the hours out in the rain. Consider how are you going to get loads of different experiences.
What lateral experiences might you be able to get?
Relationships are the ‘whole system’
Policy is meaningless until somebody reads it and does something with it
The sport system is a huge web of human beings – humans are the secret key and we should start with them.
How do we define success and what does it mean…
We can all influence in our ‘own little garden’
These are my opinions and I speak on behalf of me – I check myself every day
The way that I speak is influenced by the way you listen and the way you listen is influenced by the way I speak – we cant separate ourselves!
Be prepared - How you get in and how you get out and the middle bit will sort itself out
Quick fire questions:

When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing by Daniel H. Pink

How do I prepare to be the best version of myself…
Keep active
Walk the dog.
Sleep well - consistently
Being well prepared – how start and how close!

From a young Wigan lad to the longest standing Rugby League Head Coach for Scotland attending 3 world cups. He has travelled the world, worked at a number of clubs and has found that humour, hard work and remaining humble are key.
It is such a great conversation if you are keen to hear somebody who is striving to be themselves and honest about who they are and have been. Authentic leadership comes to my mind!
Steve is now the Head of Welfare at Rugby League Cares in the UK. He took up the role after heading up the education and welfare position at the Wigan Warriors.
Steve is a highly experienced individual having coached at all levels of the game. He has been Head Coach at Super-League level and also coached the Scotland national team in three world cups and the 2016 Four Nations Competition. Steve made the decision to concentrate on his main passion of player care and wellbeing and ensured the Wigan Warriors welfare structure is one of the best, not only in rugby league but in professional sport. His recent appointment at RL Cares has seen him make a massive impact on the player welfare structure of all players playing in the UK.

Success quotes or sayings:
Surrounded myself with good people
Humble hard working and respectful were key values to me
Players ended up driving the culture in the best teams I was involved with
Everyone bought into the culture on and off the field
I was often outside my comfort zone
I just worked hard and lived my values
Winning became an obsession
Being a head coach can be a lonely place sometimes
Balance between winning and being driven and making sure you look after yourself enough
Learnt to delegate better and more. Sit back, delegate and trust my staff more has been a massive benefit and learning
I really valued the Sport psychologist input. The value of an impartial and confidential conversation was so helpful
It is very different being head coach to being an assistant coach
I just started putting time as side to spend time with my family – I started to recognise the importance of this. Spending time watching my lad now playing football.
I have become more aware of those around me and valuing the time with them. These are valuable lessons learnt from my early days when I didn’t do this
Recognising the elements of your life away from the sport – business, education, family etc… If only focussed on one thing and its not going well then things may be very difficult.
All coaches get sacked…
If I wrote everything down regarding my career it would be an interesting book.
A peak – being involved in 3 world cups with Scotland especially in 2013 and then the 4 Nations in 2015 (drawing against New Zealand)
You have got to keep those same principles - humble, hardworking etc… are non-negotiable and go wherever you go.
I would have to work at a different pace in different environments/clubs. Same principles yet different timelines
Leave the club in a better position/place than when you came
When you leave a club you always want to go back and shake peoples hands
Really valued speaking to other sports and key people in businesses. Go speak to people.
I have learnt to immerse myself more in my family
(podcasts and autobiographies) It’s just brilliant to look at other peoples perspectives and how they deal with the challenges of life.
Make sure you learn something everyday and be at your best.

Success Quotes or sayings:
I didn’t know how to access sport and fitness at an early age
The concepts were playing out – trying hard at school, wanting to learn and working out how I could become better at something
I was interested., curious and intrigued
I was conscientious and hard working and used these principles
Really understanding – what’s the drama behind the piece
Searching and being curious all the time
Find something that is so exciting I want to bury myself in it
I was categorised as not a sporty child
I saw opportunities which I believed were not open to me
There was a real joy when I found sport – it was all mine
Striving is a real part of me – I struggle to switch it off
The tension between the learning process and performance outcome measurements
An interest in looking at things beyond just the answer
Peoples answers and reactions gave you a sense there were ‘good ways to go’ and ‘bad ways to go’
What about them – this is what I often struggle with – the constant segregation
I was doing well but feeling really uncomfortable at the same time
I feel uncomfortable about the labels we put on people
I was totally released from outcomes – it was a really lovely thing. I just wanted to do ourselves proud
I realised the was a process of ‘you just have to get on with it!’
You had to opt in – there was no option of opting out
The scenario was - I cannot run away so had to run towards. There was no spotlight on JUST you!
Focussing on yourself as well as others
I am afraid of the water and still am…. Yet being ON the water is my favourite place
Lots of things exclude you...how can we emphasise how to INCLUDE you
[Watch for] sweeping statements that teachers (and developers) make
Fun being so important even when we put in more training and take things ‘more seriously’
The performance narrative that arrived was dense and oppressive – but thought that is what you have got to do to be an Olympic rower?
I then threw myself into this narrative…
I tried to learn all this ‘dominant winning language’. I found this really hard!
I am so glad I loved the sport and being on the river
Having a broad network of connections and friends was so important
My other interests were a lifeline and necessity for me to be able to perform
I did things to an obsessive degree which at times came at a cost
The importance of compassion and mindfulness in sport
Seeing sport in the broader framework is really helpful to performance

Kevin Sinfield needs little introduction. Captained Great Britain at RL, played both codes of Rugby, SPOTY runner up and most recently has raised a huge amount of money for the MND association in support of his close friend Rob Burrow who is suffering from this cruel disease. In his word this was “the best week of his life” – running 7 marathons in 7 days.
Kev the younger brother, best mate, team mate, retired player, the leader, the fundraiser and really importantly the father of the family shares some of his very own personal story in his usual humble, authentic, and determined way.
It is a must listen and you cannot fail to be both choked and inspired by what he has achieved and how he has achieved it! Some how you know there is more to come!

Chris really brings to life what it has been like living with and overcoming adversity. For me there is a real theme of do we want to be treated the same or differently and the consequences of this.
If you are facing challenges and wondering how you may over come them then listen in for some inspiration and guidance. Chris shares some of his strategies that helped. They may help you!

A very candid view of what High Performance is to him and what he needed to survive. As expected, John was open and honest about his journey through sport touching on some of the highs, the lows and controversies he was involved in. A constant was John asking himself “What was the learning in that”
This is a unique and authentic story..
John shares some really personal and never shared before stories when he was involved as a played for Scotland and coach at Yorkshire. It is a must listen….and a great opportunity to learn from his Sport Story. Here is a little more about John and his background…
John is a Scottish, Edinburgh born ex First Class and International Cricketer who was inducted into the Cricket Scotland Hall of Fame in May 2019. In formative years John enjoyed 6 years within the pathway of youth professional Football with Hibernian F.C. and Falkirk F.C. John is also an ECB Level 4 Cricket Coach awarded in 2013.
From a modest sporting background, John has followed a less than linear and comfortable pathway to the highest possible playing and coaching levels in Cricket. Over 25 years of involvement in professional sport comes with a strong and compelling backstory of ups, downs, challenges and learnings.

A genuine and vulnerable insight into the sporting journey of Ian Braid – dedicated to Nina Foord who sadly passed away recently.
Nina typified the amazing work that volunteers do in sport and also impacted on Ian’s journey from being a young boy volunteering at the local rugby club right the way through to championing the cause and providing support for both athletes and those that help the athletes.
Ian shares some of the highs and lows of his career including some personal challenges but what is clear is the impact he has had on the sporting system and many individuals by bringing attention to some hugely important issues.
Below is a little more detail about Ian. I am confident that he will make you think and that there are some great take away messages from the podcast. Enjoy!
Ian has brought together his significant experience in sport and his passion for helping others under the umbrella of DOCIAsport the company he founded in 2017. He brings a refreshing and independent view to all aspects of duty of care in sport from the perspective of coaches, officials, athletes, administrators, and the sector itself. Ian is acknowledged as a trusted leader whose opinions are widely sought after in sport, higher education, government, and business. He is recognised as a champion of mental health education. DOCIAsport has been shortlisted for a national award as Mental Health Consultancy 2020 and Ian himself is a fellow of the Mental Health Collective. Ian has given acclaimed keynote presentations, lectures, podcasts, and workshops throughout the UK.
His vision as CEO of the British Athletes Commission led to the sector strengthening the support offered to vulnerable adults in sport. He also played a key role in the DCMS review of duty of care in sport assisting Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson. These became the platform for Ian to deliver sustainable positive change in sport, mental health provision and for the next generation of sport leaders applying his values, skills, and experience

A double Olympian talking about dreaming big and starting small, following your heart and doing what you love, how we become what we practice and why not pick up the pen and write your own chapter. These are some of the many brilliant insights, tips and phrases Chris shared in this honest and humble conversation.
Chris also gave an interesting perspective as a business owner offering a sport service to parents as well as being a parent himself.
I learnt loads and so could you – take some time to listen in!
Below is a bit more of a background to Chris…
After competing for Great Britain for nearly 10 years, Chris hung up the trunks and retired from international swimming and began working with businesses/organisations far and wide to help inspire, mentor and coach people to embrace 'challenge and change' for their optimal performance. Chris has built a reputation as a motivational speaker throughout the last 7 years working from referral to referral, sharing his story and the lessons learnt from the journey with over 400,000 people. Throughout this time, Chris designed and delivered an Olympic Inspiration Programme for children to schools across Kent (UK) which reached over 300 schools spanning 6 years.
In 2011 Chris was a lead mentor on a the 'Sky Sports Living for Sport' - inspiration programme across the UK & Ireland. The programme was designed to assist disengaged people from society to get back on track. This role involved training up former Olympians and World Class Athletes to deliver inspirational talks and mentoring/coaching programmes. The role involved working with the most challenging of young people whilst coaching athletes to transition from sport to mentoring.
During the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Chris was selected to mentor and coach the next generation of Olympians on the 'Ambition Programme'. This programme involved taking 350 potential Olympians to experience an Olympic games (London). Chris's role was mentor the athletes to maximise the whole experience and to expand their personal development.
Here and now .... Currently, Chris and his wife Erica, run their own Learn to swim business - 'Swim Buddies' which has seen the business (located in Darlington, UK) grow from 7 swimmers in their first week in September 2014 through to over 900 children swimming with Swim Buddies every week.
Chris's coaching, speaking and mentoring is centred around personal development. Whether it's in the water helping swimmers or on dry land in business and life, Chris believes that success is something you attract from the person you become.

Lancashire Cricket Academy Director to England Women’s Academy Head Coach: The finding of Jimmy Anderson; Talent identification; Developing self belief; Making critical decisions and how Andrew ‘Freddie' Flintoff got his nick name are all covered in this great conversation.
Stanny is a former Lancashire wicket-keeper and coach, and believes the experience and knowledge he gained in the development of the successful Academy at Emirates Old Trafford after becoming its founding director in 2002 is proving invaluable in his role with England women’s Academy.
Stanny it truly an exceptional and experienced developer of cricket talent. He said about his time at Lancashire

Stanny has regularly been namechecked by players from Andrew Flintoff to Haseeb Hameed as a key figure in their development.
This is such an insightful and honest account of his journey and how he navigated the challenges and opportunities he faced both in cricket and life.

Are you interested in the ups and downs of being an aspiring professional footballer and what it is like being a lead coach and integral part of one of the most interesting and exciting clubs (and projects) in the football league – Salford City? If so, you are in the right place…
In 2017, Lewis joined Salford City Academy and his role was to bring the experience he gained at Burnley (a Premiership Academy) and work for the Class of 92 owners to develop a new Football Academy with Jamie Russell.
He openly shares his experiences as an aspiring professional footballer, the highs and lows and how he has become the coach and person he is today. This is a fantastic and ‘real honest’ insight for all parents, young players, and aspiring coaches.

An amazing and rich conversation with world champion Thai Boxer Rachael Mackenzie. Eating disorders and anorexia, stereotypes around women, self-belief, the importance of mindset and performance behaviours and so much more is covered. There is truly a takeaway for everyone who is looking to become the best version of themselves and overcome some barriers and limiting belief.
Rachael is a World Thai-Boxing champion, neuro physiotherapist, sporting ambassador and mother of twins.
She started Thai-Boxing in 2000 whilst at University. In 2006, she topped the Women’s Thai-boxing world rankings in 2 weight categories (50kg and 52kg). Rachael has also taken 2 British titles – both by knockout – and a European title.
She later became the first European Woman to compete in traditional bare-knuckle Thai-Boxing in Thailand and the first woman to fight under Full Muay-Thai Rules in the UK. Throughout her career she has had to overcome prejudice from people who do not believe women should compete in contact sports.
Following a knee injury, Rachael made the switch from Thai-boxing to Boxing, taking silver at the National Championships in her first season.
Take this opportunity to listen in so you can also gain some of this value!

I had the great pleasure of speaking with Nathan Wood who is currently playing his part in developing the next England cricketers and coaches.
He has shared his amazing, honest, and rounded view of being a professional player, then coach and now coach developer and parent himself. This is a priceless insight for all parents, coaches and developers of others and especially those grappling with high aspirations for themselves and or their family, or who are coaching their own children.
Nathan’s measured and very thoughtful approach and account of his Sport Story is a clear demonstration of the self-exploration he has done and continues to do in both his personal and professional life.
I am sure that the individuals on the Specialist and International Coaching programmes at the ECB will definitely value the breadth of his experiences, his depth of insight and understanding and his relaxed yet purposeful approach.
Take this opportunity to listen in so you can also gain some of this value!

Listen to a Double Olympian who started competing late in her career, has not always worked in sport and now holds several influential positions within sport. Sara shares a real insight into the brutal nature of her sport and even describes it as a game of ‘poker’. Knowing yourself, chronic fatigue, transitioning jobs, taking opportunities, positivity, transferable skills and team dynamics are just a few of the many areas we touched on.
Sara became Performance Director at England Netball five years ago & recently led the England Roses to a historic gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Other career junctures include a six year stint as Performance Director at Archery GB, three years at UK Sport as a Performance Advisor, two years as a Business Manager in the City & three years as a police officer working in Nottingham inner city. Presently she is Vice Chair of the UK Sport Performance Director Strategic Group (PDSG) & a Non Exec Director (NED) on the British Amateur Boxing Association (BABA) & SkateBoarding GB Boards. Her education includes a B.Sc in Sports Science & Social Science & a M.Sc in Sport Science (physiology bias).
Most notable sporting achievements include representing GBR at both triathlon & cycling – the latter involved two Olympic Games & two Commonwealth Games in road cycling, & multiple world championships (road & track). Sara was the first female to podium at World Cup level for GBR in 1998 & continues to challenge herself outside work (when time allows!) in endurance based sports ranging from half ironman’s to adventure races & individualised coaching.
Other interests include developing herself as a mentor/executive coach with an ambition longer term to formalise her passion for developing people’. She currently works with coaches within the Premier League, ECB & UK Sport World Class program

I particularly like the following quote Rowena shared which I think is really relevant in the changing and uncertain world we are in.
”Never compare your beginning to someone else’s middle or end”
Rowena represented Great Britain in the 1996 Olympics, and is a former European Judo Champion and National Coach. She then went to on to coaching the coaches, working with a wide variety of performance sports coaches.
The lessons learnt through high performance sport have served her well, providing her with a framework to lean on when life throws one of those curved balls. She also continues to enjoy practising a bit of judo in the local club.
On reaching her 50th year, Rowena chose a change of direction, retraining as a financial adviser. In this role she coaches individuals and businesses on their financial fitness. As part of their team, she brings financial planning expertise to the table, advising on financial resilience, efficiency and performance to align with and help achieve their wider goals.
Rowena’s motto is “Be serious with a Smile”, that is be serious about what you do, but never forget to have fun along the way.

Mental Health in sport and society; The impact of bullying; Behaviour Patterns; Learning to learn; Fear of failure; Overcoming adversity; The gender and ethnicity imbalance in sport and so much more is covered in this amazing conversation with Manisha.
----more---- Manisha shares a fantastic quote and clearly demonstrates how she has lived by it.
"If the flower doesn't bloom then you change the environment in which it grows"
Without giving too much away see below for a little more about our special guest.
Manisha Tailor MBE is a former Deputy Headteacher, having worked in primary education for 19 years. She qualified as a Headteacher in 2011, but shortly after this embarked upon a career change due to personal circumstance. This led her to the next chapter in her life, setting up her company, Swaggarlicious Ltd and building a career in football, stemed from her childhood passion.
Manisha became a young carer 22 years ago, along with her family caring for her twin brother who suffered a mental breakdown as a result of bullying and trauma. This inspired her to develop work around mental health for adults and children, publishing a teaching resource titled, Child in Mind, that promotes open dialogue around mental health through pictures, poems and stories. Manisha recognises the important role sport can play as a vehicle for positive mental health, developing relationships and both physical and emotional literacy.
Alongside this, she works fulltime at QPR's academy as Lead Foundation Phase Coach, overseeing the U9-U11 age groups in addition to coaching in the Youth Development Phase.

Such a wide ranging and informative conversation with Colin Wilson. Colin would like nothing more than to help others and is very open in what he shares. There are not many people in sport that have had the breadth and depth of experiences that he has.
Colin is a deeply experienced and skilled developer of senior leaders, coaches and athletes – and their systems. Originally a table tennis player with over 100 England Junior caps, a European Youth Bronze medal and two senior Commonwealth Silver medals, Colin then coached England teams at Women’s Men’s, Girls and Boys level. He moved seamlessly into corporate management consultancy and has provided culture change in global IT, banking and FMCG. In sport he has been working with athletes and their coaches to Olympic level since 1999, working with National Junior and Senior Coaches in over 20 Olympic and non-Olympic sports. Colin now acts in business as a qualified Supervisor of executive coaches, mentors, and organisation consultants with a particular interest in psycho-traumatology. He still coaches table tennis, taking players from beginner to international level. Recently an interim CEO in the adult social care sector, he teaches mentoring for the British Equestrian Federation and mentors for the football Premier League. His technical background is in economics and statistics.
I am confident that you will both enjoy what he has to say but as importantly you will take something from it. Some inspiration, some motivation as to how to win without losing or just the recommendation of a great book!

Being a female coach in a predominantly male environment; being brave; facing adversity; developing players and their traditional values; the important role of parents; and asking the powerful question are all covered in this open, relaxed and insightful conversation with Natalie. There is something here for everyone!!!
----more----
Natalie started coaching when young and has worked hard, faced elements of adversity and challenge, learnt from every opportunity and has had some amazing experiences. Her approach to her own development has led her to become an integral member of Category 1 Academy coaching team, she has been recognised by the Premier League and also has a role as the England Woman’s U16 assistant coach. For a relatively young coach her CV is really impressive. It reads as follows:
Currently Lead Phase U13/U14 Coach @ NUFC Academy & England Women’s U16 Assistant Technical Coach. As it stands, the only YDP Lead female coach within a Men's Premier League Academy. UEFA A Licence & Advanced Youth Award as well as BA (Hons) in Sports Development & Coaching & the Premier Leagues ECAS Coaching Degree. Aspirations to be a Head Coach @ Senior Level in either the Male or Female game.
Natalie is warm, articulate and ambitious. She is a walking example of ‘you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it’ and gives some invaluable tips and advice based on her experience and knowledge.
I am biased, but this is a must listen to Podcast. It offers hope and inspiration to all those interested in making the most of what they do and who they are.
