Druids In Cars, Going To Festivals: Recent Episodes

Three Cranes Grove, ADF

Come travel the Pagan festival circuit with us, and enjoy conversations that keep the fire bright!

While headed home from a Dedicant Oath rite, we started talking about what it was like to move on from our current roles in modern Paganism, whether those moves were due to life changes, vocational changes, or just coming to a place where it was time to move on.

Mike Bierschenk joins Revs. Avende and Dangler on this discussion again, and we our conversation goes a bit everywhere, but it was a good chat.

Today, on the way out to a Dedicant Oath Rite, Rev. Avende and Rev. Dangler travel with Mike Bierschenk on the way out to State College, and chat on a topic we've been meaning to get to for a while: what does it mean for us when our deities are jerks? Myths and legends are full of some really awful things that the spirits do to each other, to humans, and even to animals and plants. How do we navigate those waters?

Content Note: You've read the stories about deities and how they interact with others. This episode doesn't stray too deeply into specifics, so we aren't sure a trigger warning is necessary, but we are talking about deities behaving poorly, so be aware.

Our audio is a little odd on this episode as we figure out how to mic up three different people in the car, but we're hopeful it comes through well. Sorry if it's a little unbalanced or quiet, but we should have that fixed next episode; it was a good conversation, but we only have one source, unfortunately.

Happy Samhain, friends!

One of the great traditions we have as a Grove is that we keep an Ancestor Box. This is a simple box that has been with us for 20 years now, receiving new ancestors and bringing them into our shared community of ancestral family, and becoming a part of who we are. Today, because we were driving home from the Cantlos Druid Moon rite where we opened the box, we reflected a bit on how we interact with it, what's changed in two decades, and the ways we've found to keep the "stuff" in the box connected to their stories.

On our way out to a Druid Moon rite, we took a moment to chat about a festival Rev. Avende had been to recently: Harvest Nights! Long one of our favorite festivals, Rev. Avende had made the trip without Rev. Dangler this year, and so you can listen along as he hears all about what he missed.

Today, Rev. Avende and our Grove Bard, Mike Bierschenk, travel out to Harvest Nights and bring you along in the car with them, as they discuss the role of the Bard in Three Cranes Grove, ADF, and in ritual in general. Both have served in the role for our Grove, and both have brought their own magical touch to the work.

We continue our conversation from our previous episode with how we do magic for others: how we decide what sort of magical work to do, who to do it for or with, and how we divide out our magic by audience and type of work. We also talk about magical work for hire, and the boundaries we set around that.

After Summerland, we're back! Today, we talk about sympathy and contagion in magic: the idea that things that are alike can provide access to each other, either through being alike or containing the essence (Greek: ousia) of a thing. We chat about them as subsets of attraction, referring to the Laws of Magic outlined in Real Magic.

We talk a little bit about joss money (AKA "hell notes" or "hell money") as an example, but the majority of this discussion grows out of the need for Rev. Avende to provide access to religious and magical support in their new role as a prison chaplain: how can we provide services to incarcerated individuals, particularly in light of the restrictions that are imposed on them.

Rev. Dangler floats his notion of "magic as access" here, probably for the first time publicly, so what you're hearing in the last half of this episode is really an initial oral argument for that definition, and we expect there's more to come on that as it develops.

A couple of things get mentioned in this episode, including a collaborative whiteboard image of Epona that we painted in the pandemic, and the Flame of Hope experience in an airport, which we've previously mentioned.

Today, we're off to Summerland, and we hope you will be too! We're looking forward to more new content with new friends there!

Last week, we recorded an episode on the way to the Dublin Irish Festival for our annual Sunday Druid Service, and recorded a bit with Mike Bierschenk afterwards to review the service and our experience. If you want to watch the service, you can do so here: 2023 Druid Sunday Service.

We also talk a bit about things new and old in the ritual, as well as unexpected last minute changes. Mike used a new cosmos creation script as well, which you can find on his blog.

We're also making a switch for better accessibility on this episode: we're moving to mono instead of stereo sound, which should aid both people with hearing differences between their ears, and people who just like to listen to a podcast with one earpod in. Either way, we hope this is helpful to a lot of folks, and it'll be our standard going forward. Do let us know if anything weird happens on your end!

The Summerland Festival is next week, August 17-20, 2023, near Yellow Springs, Ohio! As of publication, you can still register!

This week is the final of five episodes we recoded back-to-back about "Managing the Magical," or how we do magical work in certain sections of our rituals. We'll talk about what we consider the "big magical workings" in ADF ritual, the history behind those sections, and how they came to be part of our liturgy, before diving deeply into how we actually do these ritual parts.

This week is all about "The Working," which sounds ominous and important: how we do it functionally, and why we do it in ritual.

The five episodes are:

  • (Re)Creating the Cosmos (July 13)
  • Opening the Gates (July 20)
  • Taking the Omen (July 27)
  • The Return Flow (August 2)
  • The Workings (today)

Today, Rev. Avende reviews their experience at the Wisteria Appalachian Summer Solstice festival in southeastern Ohio. They discuss their favorite workshops, including one on bone throwing by one of the owners of Moon Bees Apothecary and Spiritual Supply in Wisconsin, and a little about open and closed systems of divination. Then, it's on to ritual work and spaces, people that they met, and experiences with queer safe spaces and the amazing drumming circle. You'll also hear some ideas we hope to carry forward into our own Summerland Festival, coming up in mid-August. (Registration is open, friends! Come see us!)

For some pictures and a full write up, check out Rev. Avende's written review of this festival as well!

A couple of weeks ago, we got to record with friends old and new in the barn at the close of the Wellspring Gathering, 2023. To our great delight, we were able to connect up with Collin from The Crone's Porch, a pagan discussion podcast much like our own, and record a small crossover episode. We also have Jacque (who has been on before) and Stephen with us, providing their perspectives as well.

A listener question today comes in, asking, "Is there a place for me if I just want to 'show up' to ritual?" And of course, our answer will surprise nobody.

We talk a bit about what it means to "just show up," to be part of ritual without taking a part. What is the expected level of participation, and can we make space for it in our Groves and in our broader work? And, if you want to just go to ritual, what do you need to do to make sure that remains an option in your local community? What sort of discipline is it, when you are "just showing up?"

Of course, it was interesting to have this discussion on the way to a Druid Moon rite that no one had actually said they were going to show up to, but in the end, people did show up to ritual that night.

"Good leaders spread everything, from wealth to work."

Talking about the commitments we make as clergy and leaders in our work, we turned on the recorder so others could sit in. We spoke about how burnout impacts us, and how we avoid it (when we're able to). In particular, a lot of our discussion talks about our responsibility as current leaders to create space for new blood and how to deal with the parts of our work as leaders that just don't feed us (spoiler alert: it's delegation, boundaries, and trust).

We're on our way to the Wellspring Gathering this week and working hard on getting new content, so you get a bonus episode! This week, it's all about roadside divinatory attractions you can find throughout the North American travel landscape, inspired by our visit with a Zoltar machine in a travel plaza in upstate New York.

Of course, there are pictures and videos worth looking at here: from each of us receiving our fortune from Zoltar to the creepy dog in Lucas, KS, and The Magical Druid's own divination dispenser, you can find pics and vids in a small Google album... and maybe we'll add more to it soon enough!

Send us your favorite roadside divinatory attraction at druidsincars@threecranes.org!

We're also including a small gallery of the attractions mentioned, which you can check out on Google Photos.

On our way to the Three Cranes Grove, ADF, annual liturgical planning meeting, Rev. Dangler hit Rev. Avende with a random question when they got in the car: do you set goals for your ritual year? We talk about what we expect on the planning side of things as we get into it, ways we look for balance, and things we want to look back on and consider as we move forward. We might have gotten a little ahead of ourselves since this would have been great content for the actual meeting, but hey, at least we recorded it (and we would have gotten kicked out of the library before we finished the meeting if we'd added these 17 minutes to the in-meeting discussion)!

Are you interested in one of our rites? You should come! As you'll hear in this episode, we're working hard to become more and more welcoming, to provide space for everyone, and to craft language and work that is as inclusive as possible. Last week we talked about how Rev. Avende and Rev. Dangler were trying to plan out a trip to Greece; this week, we circle back to the trip that Rev. Dangler and his wife took, and how they managed the space between good planning and good luck to find ways to encounter the things they wanted to do on that trip. Rev. Dangler's wife joins in as a special guest to detail her perspectives on the trip as well.

Some of the things we mention on the trip can best be illustrated by looking at photos of the experience, we suspect.

  • Confluentia, goddess of the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers
  • Drachenfals, or "Dragon's Rock," as seen from the late night photo taken while sailing the Rhine.
  • The Vinegar Tasting outfits they had you wear at Doktorenhof, and the shrine to the Vinegar Mother in their cellar.
  • The view of Mt. Pilatus from Lucerne, Switzerland.
  • The Statue of Artio (Facebook comment thread with several photos in it)

Wellspring is just a few weeks away, and we hope to see you there, or perhaps at Summerland in August! Festivals are a great chance to get out and see others and learn from your fellow Pagans, and we can't recommend them enough!

Early last year, Rev. Avende and Rev. Dangler discussed the process of planning a trip in the not-too-distant future to Greece to tour some sacred sites. During the chat, they also talked about other trips they've taken, and upcoming trips that are on the horizon.

Some items that come up during the discussion that are worth linking include:

  • The Nautes Pillar MJD saw in Paris' Musée de Cluny [video link]
  • An upcoming trip for MJD and his wife up the Rhine [commercial link]
  • A little Mercury Prayer written after an encounter at the Museum of the Siene [Tumblr link]

When we think about rites of passage, we usually think about how they impact the person who experiences the passage directly, rather than the community around them. In this episode, we talk a bit about what it's like to be a part of that community, and explore a bit about how we've experienced rites of passage, and the observations we have about how they've influenced others... as well as ourselves.

We recorded this episode on our way to a houseblessing for Anagantios, our Stay-At-Home Druid Moon in February of 2022.

We're back for Season 6!

At our Anagantios Druid Moon in 2022, we recorded this episode about the advice we would give to ourselves when we were our younger Pagan selves. It turns out our advice is actually still pretty relevant to us these days.

We also brought advice from a special guest not in the car, which we gathered at Harvest Nights 2021.

If you have advice for your younger Pagan self, we're collecting that advice! Record it and send us a link to the recording at druidsincars@threecranes.org, and we might feature your advice on a future episode!

One of the things about recording a podcast is that you find yourself passing milestones on the journey, and today, we managed to get in our 100th episode! We talk a bit about how rites of passage have figured into our working life as podcasters, as members of a local Grove, and as individuals, and what it feels like to move through them.

Most importantly, we look forward, because what comes on the other side of such a rite is impossible to know until you've crossed the threshold!

If you're interested in Summerland, Pre-Registration is open through August 12th (closing very soon!), but you can also register at the door for the event if you'll be camping and are willing to manage food yourself. It'll be a great festival, we know, and we're so looking forward to it.

Druidry is not drudgery, and there is an element of joy to all of the work that we do with and for others.

We speak of Rev. Dangler's initiatory experience, where joy was gifted to him as a tool of his work. Rev. Avende speaks of joy in their flow experience of ritual. We speak of the difference between joyfulness and happiness, and our aim to use the flow and the joy to bring connectivity to the folk.

Because of the way that ADF is structured as a pan-Indo-European organization, it's entirely possible to come to ritual at your local Grove and experience ritual in a culture you're unfamiliar with, or (if you're clergy or an initiate) be asked even to write a ritual for others.

We'll talk a bit about how we research and write the rituals as ADF Priests first, and then talk a bit about how we, as attendees, approach a ritual where we are strangers to the spirits that are honored.

For "Circles of Concentration" work, see Rev. Kirk Thomas' paper on the topic.

Have you ever felt that you were in over your head with this whole ritual-and-magic thing? Do you feel like an "imposter" about to be found out? We all have, but it can seem like it's a lonely place to be. You might be surprised that, even with all the experience and work under their belts, Revs. Avende and Dangler both deal with it on the regular, too.

We talk a little bit about what our own notions of "being an imposter" looks like, the ways that we personally combat those feelings within ourselves, and how we can help others work through these feelings organizationally and together.

We got to meet new people and visit with old friends, and try out new camping gear.  The Bards of Three Cranes Grove, ADF, played quite a lot of music at the bardic night, and we even gave our own little workshop based on this podcast (with material forthcoming this season)!

Today, we talk about how we've made group ritual work, including some tips about both online rituals and in-person rituals. We've had a lot of different strategies over the past 20 years here in Three Cranes Grove, ADF, and exploring what worked and what didn't as we've been planning, and what to do when things go wrong (on either a large scale, or a small one).

We also talk about how to follow a lead in ritual, the benefits of trusting your fellow ritualists, building enthusiasm, and Rev. Avende's work that they call, "Performing the Bardic Lasso."

CW: This episode discusses pet loss and grief surrounding it.

One of the strange things about owning pets is that they become an integral part of our lives, our practice, and the spaces we inhabit. And, with limited exceptions, we may be with them for their entire lives, but they are only with us for a part of ours.

Both Rev. Avende and Rev. Dangler have lost pets, and both have had to find ways to work those pets into their own religious lives, and those of their families. We spend a lot of time chatting about that aspect of our work during this discussion, as well as memorial prayers

Today we're chatting about our portable altars, and what we take with us when we head out on the road (or even when we're just out and about close to home).

We discuss the physical things and the spiritual things we bring with us, how we use them, and how they help us. As the conversation evolves, we begin to speak about our prayer lives as well, and how being on the road impacts those things.

We hope you'll join us for as many of this coming year's festivals as possible, in person if you can. There has never been a safer, more welcome chance to connect with your fellow pagans and Druids. Consider, for example, The Wellspring Gathering May 26-30, 2022 (open for registration), and The Summerland Gathering August 18-21, 2022 (accepting workshop proposals and registration)! Today, we're taking a look at the (most intentionally) silly rituals we've done. We cover a lot of ground, and there are a lot of links worth looking at here to give you an idea of what we're talking about, so here's our list of resources for this episode (mostly) in order of appearance/mention in the episode.

  • The Jimmy Buffett Ritual: Text
  • "Beach House On The Moon" (the song) on YouTube
  • The Jimmy Buffett Oracle

  • "Dressed Up As Freyja (Goin' Down to Jotenheim)" by Art Shipkowski
  • Rev. Avende's Potato Prayer
  • Rev. Avende's Garnish Prayer
  • Rev. Avende's "How To Write and Invocation"
  • "Hey You Old Guys" Ancestor Prayer (turns out this was just an in-person prayer, not written)
  • Rev. Henderson's "Rainbow Connection" filk (Rob asks us to remind folks that this filk has an extra verse, compared to the original)
  • 2005 3CG 'Soulstice' Ritual (with death metal)
  • Erisian High Mass Script
  • Animal Crossing Rite Livestream
  • Ritual Bloopers Episode: Episode 13 - Ritual Bloopers and Fails, with Rev. Melissa Ashton, Rev. William Ashton, Rev. Lauren Mart, Rev. Kirk Thomas, and Rev. Jan Avende.

We've eased back into the festival season by attending the Harvest Nights Gathering in late 2021, and it's worth talking about how good it feels to be back with our fellow Druids in the woods. A small festival has a lot of flexibility, and we were able to get back into the work in a joyful way.

Over the last two years, we've done a lot of festivals virtually, and there have been a lot of missing pieces from that; being in the physical presence of other humans magnified what has been missing for the past two years, giving us a chance to really think about and reflect on the joy of the work we get to do at those festivals.

We also got to do full group ritual with no tech and no cameras for the first time in about two years, and we get to reflect on that experience as well.

Check out the hand-made fire-scrying cards Rev. Avende made at the festival!

We're back, and we think the festival season is too!

Our first episode was recorded at the end of last year's (super short) festival season, on our way out to Harvest Nights in October... so when we talk about the fall color, this is why.

Trillium didn't end up happening this year (it's usually where we start our season), but we're starting our season around the time of Trillium anyway for tradition's sake, in the hopes that we'll have that event again soon.

We decided to start with this episode because, with the new year and new festivals coming, we thought some insight into how we prepare our workshops might help you, our listeners, create your own workshops. One of the joys of the festival season for us is being able to go and teach, and we think everyone (including you) has something of value to offer our community. So please, as you listen, think about what you could share with your community, and with us.

Are you looking for a festival to present at? Our Grove's Summerland Gathering is accepting presenter applications! We cannot express how amazing it would be to meet you in person!

Resources we mention during the discussion include:

  • Writing Evocations Workshop: You can watch the video on how to write evocations on YouTube and check out their page for the workshop as well.
  • Rev. Avende's Workshop on Crafting Workshops: we may not have video of the workshop, but we do have the handout! You can find it on Rev. Avende's website, under "Five Lights of *Ghosti: The Gifts You Bring"
  • Rev. Dangler's Healing Workshop video
  • You can find full-color, full-sized versions of Rev. Dangler's cheat sheets for divination systems here: Elder Futhark Runes | Ogham | Greek Alphabet
  • Workshop tiers for our Patreons: both of us have a similar $5/month tier for workshops and learning. You can sign up for either of our items here: Rev. Avende | Rev. Dangler
  • The Rev. Avende-led Pan-Pagan Theology Panel
  • If you'd like to see questions and answers from a college class presentation, Rev. Dangler posted a recent one to his Patreon, if you're a subscriber.

Finally, if you'd like to see Rev. Avende and Rev. Dangler on a recent Zoom panel, you can find a Clergy Tea Time panel on the ADF YouTube page.

We're so excited to be back!

We take an autumn detour to the Brushwood Folklore Center, a spur-of-the-moment change in plans that brought back memories and reminded us that yeah, sometimes we give ourselves good advice.

We'll describe a lot of the space, but sometimes it helps to see pictures.

Check out images of the icons in the space, the Taranis Altar, and the Blue Boat Shrine we mention.

If your podcast app doesn't let you see embedded photos in the show notes, hit up our main page at druidsincars.podbean.com, or pop into the Google Photos album of the side-trip for the full view.

Reminisce with us as we enjoy our memories of years of camping, ritual, and experience in western New York State, returning to an old friend and sacred site.

This week, we chat about a commonly-requested topic: how we live our lives as Pagans, and what the lifestyle looks like to us. Part of that is just how we live our lives, and the decisions that we make that seem quite mundane: how we speak to and rear our children, how we interact with the world around us, and even how we travel. We talk about our visits to the Nashville Parthenon, and about a map of publicly accessible Pagan statues all throughout the US that resides on the Three Cranes Google account.

Also, get a load of us, practicing our own advice when a surprise thought leads us down a different road than expected, quite literally... making this Part One of a two-part episode all of a sudden. Tune in next week for our escapade on our detour!

We're back on the road, going to a festival, meaning that your friendly, chatty Druids are back in the full swing of the work. We recorded enough episodes to finish out the rest of the season on our way to Harvest Nights, and to provide a head start into next season as well, so get ready for regular episodes to return starting this week until the break!

This week, we're talking about what it's been like to do hybrid rituals (partially private and in-person, partially public and over web conferencing software). Back in Episode 70, we described what we thought it would be like, and this seemed an opportune time to think about the experience and reflect a bit together on it.

So many thanks to Charter Oak Grove, ADF, in Connecticut for putting together such a wonderful weekend in person. It was amazing.

Did you know that one of our co-hosts, Rev. Avende, has published a children's education book? They did! It's called Kindling Sparks: A Religious Education Program for Young Pagans, and it's been available for a bit now through Rev. Avende's Patreon, and it's now been released as a book!

Today, we interview Rev. Avende and talk about the process of bringing this program to life; it's development in early 2020 through today, and the path it's taken through testing and community work.

You can pick up a copy of Kindling Sparks through Garanus Publishing on Lulu, at The Magical Druid, or wherever fine books are sold!

You can also find their first book, The Spiraling Sun: A Winter Solstice Liturgy at The Magical Druid.

Finally on our way to and from a festival, even it it was virtual, Revs. Avende and Dangler are on their way out to the site of our broadcasted Summerland Unity Rite for a Druid Moon, and they spend some time discussing how they balance the religious and magical lives they lead with their mundane lives.

They also get stuck in traffic at a tomato festival, because, well, what's life without a little unplanned weirdness.

Summerland was great, though all online. If you're interested in a great online festival experience, we'll recommend Beyond the Gates, a festival happening over Labor Day weekend, and you can still register and see their presenters!

Our next in-person festival, if everything works out, will be Charter Oak's Harvest Nights. It would be really great if we could see you there, probably masked, but we're anxious to have it be in person again.

We sit down to discuss the sorts of things we seek out when we travel: the weird religious sites, the haunted tunnels, and the wonderful hospitality of our friends.

And, of course, there's an off-the-cuff prayer to the Spirit of Couch Surfing, a solid contestant for patron of this podcast.

We recorded this not in cars, but during a local, non-Pagan travel event we were both involved in. But there's way more to come.

For those curious, Rev. Avende's prayer, "Upon Encountering the Murder Ghost" from the #PrayerADay Project, Nov. 9, 2018:

Hermes Diactorus, Guide of Souls, As we traveled tonight through the dark, Sleet bouncing off the windshield,  Reflectors marking the road few and far between, I thank you for traveling alongside us.

Hermes Diactorus, Guide of Souls, For holding the ghosts at bay as the fog rose about us, For keeping the shades back as we sped beneath the underpass, For maintaining the boundary and keeping us safe from those spirits who wish us harm, I thank you for traveling alongside us.

Hermes Diactorus, Guide of Souls, Carry those spirits onward to peace, Remove them and their malevolent intentions from this world.  Hermes, I thank you for your important work.

Today, we took a listener question from an OBOD listener who wanted to know our take on the differences between spirituality and religion. We start with some dictionary definitions and work our way through our own experiences.

This discussion sort of takes off from some of the ideas about orthopraxy in our previous episode, so you might be interested to tune in there as well, though this episode certainly stands alone.

If you want to hear more about this idea that "Practice Begets Belief," you can find a 2012 podcast MJD did with BT Newberg over at Naturalistic Paganism. (Fun historical note: this was MJD's first experience on a podcast.)

Today, we get a new vocabulary word in "orthoskhesis," a word meaning "right relationship" (versus "right belief" with orthodoxy, or "right practice" with orthopraxy). We talk a bit about how we might use this in the way we think about Druidry and Paganism in general, and about how we can be not only in a right relationship, but also in a wrong relationship (spoiler alert: it's mostly "can I set healthy boundaries?").

If you're interested in the Greekies mentioned toward the end of the discussion, you can get a look at them at The Magical Druid.

Two weeks ago, in Episode 75 (s4Ep8), we spoke a bit about the sensory experiences of our work as it related directly to our stoles, sickles, and other physical items we work with; last week, we went through a Dairy Queen drive-thru and had a tasty episode. Today, we wanted to dive deeper into how we experience ritual in a very physical, sensory way.

We walk through the Five Senses we learned as kids in school (touch, hearing, seeing, taste, and smell), and then we also talk about three additional senses that are less well-known: our vestibular, interoceptive, and proprioceptive senses. To help us in our discussion, Rev. Dangler's wife, Maggie, joins us as our in-house expert to help us build a language around our experiences.

Tonight, we're Druids in Lawn Chairs Sitting Adjacent to a Fire (no new theme songs this week, though), with a longer-than-usual podcast episode (48 minutes!), but we really had a good time on this one, and had some great experiences coming around to new understandings on our topic. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did. And maybe you'll hear the owl in the background, too.

Today, we take a special break and do a special trip suggested by one of our listeners, and we talk about how we retained our sanity and practice in a global pandemic. There's a lot of chat about tech, ritual and work, and building physical connections in the absence of physical presence. We even talk about some of our favorite Patreons, like DandelionLady, Firesighted, and TheLatestKate (and of course you can also check out Rev. Avende's and Rev. Dangler's as well).

We also talk about how we've navigated the reopening process as a Grove and as individuals.

If you're interested in the set of Reopening Workings from MJD that he sent out, you can find them on his Patreon.

You can also check out the trailer and the stream of Rev. Avende's Animal Crossing Rite and see how we managed that.

We took a week off and (virtually) attended Wellspring last weekend, and we had a good time. But we're back!

Learn the secret of the Stoles of the Priests of ADF, and why we do the weird things we do with them in ritual when a new priest is ordained. Then, hear us absolutely fail to recall some prayers we speak before every right because we don't have our stoles with us.

We talk a little bit about how our physical actions inform our religious work and expression, and about what it's like to work with a sickle as a Druid.

You can watch Rev. Avende, Rev. Castner, and Rev. Crawford receive their stoles, along with the toning process, on our YouTube channel to get a feeling of what the ceremony looks like.

Liminal spaces are points or areas that are "betwixt and between" states. On foot today, we wandered past a bog, and it got us thinking about the sorts of places we've encountered that were "in between" different experiences, and what it's like to work through them, and visit them. There's a bit of travel remembrance and a bit of travel planning that goes on, too!

A couple of worthwhile notes on this episode:

  1. At one point, one of our microphones drops out, so there's a quality change in the last half of the episode.
  2. The lyric Michael can't quite recall from Scarborough Fair is: "Tell him to find me an acre of land / between the salt water and desert strand," or some variation thereof (the traditional wording changes).
  3. For the mentioned discussion about Cryptids and other "Weird Druidry" topics, check out Episode 28 of our podcast.

This past weekend, Three Cranes Grove, ADF, took our first steps toward reopening our public ritual practice: we conducted a small, semi-private hybrid ritual, where folks attended in person (masked and socially distanced) and remotely.

On their way out to our Cutios (Rain Moon) ritual, Revs. Avende and Dangler discussed their preparations, and the basics of the setup for the ritual, along with what they hoped it would be like. Then, on the way back, they looked a bit critically at what worked, and what they found most interesting about the format after being away from public ritual for so long.

Intercut into this episode are a few audio examples of how the rite sounded (an artifact of the recording process), which will let you hear how the priests worked in (and how the folk responded to) the immediate pandemic experience that was at the top of their minds.

Our hope, as a Grove, is that as other pagan groups reopen (locally and distantly), some of our experiences might serve to help them build a plan to serve their communities in a safe, careful manner.

How do we start preparing for ritual, in both physical and spiritual ways? How is it different for us when we do group ritual and persona ritual? How can we simplify it and make it easier to get out the door, even in these weird pandemic times?

Season 4 is upon us! While there aren't festivals to go to (yet), we're planning and plotting for our coming season. At our Grove's annual Anagantios (Stay-At-Home Moon) rite, Revs. Dangler and Avende traveled out to their members with a slightly altered version of our usual rite. The discussion ranges from experiences of the pandemic year, the updates we've made to our practice, and the joy of doing the work, even in this strange time.

This year's Anagantios rite had some last-minute changes thanks to some rather inclement weather (remember that blizzard that flowed through the US in mid-Feb?), but it gave us a chance to chat.

There is, as always, more to come, and we expect our regular season to start up in April as usual, even if we aren't actually headed to specific festivals.

It's been a year, hasn't it?

We reflect on the past year of not being in cars, and pretty much not going to festivals, and talk about our content, where we've been, and where we're going. Mostly, though, we talk about the projects that got us through the past season, and what worked, and what didn't.

There's a lot of stuff mentioned in this episode, so this description is going to be a bit of a linkbomb. If you can't click the links in your favorite podcast app, head over to http://druidsincars.podbean.com/ to find this episode's description, and click the links there.

We talk about festivals that are tentatively planned for in-person work, if it's safe. You can find info on those festivals, including any updates to their plans, at their websites. Specifically called out in this episode are the following fests:

  • ConVocation
  • Trillium
  • Wellspring
  • Summerland

We also talk about a few particular resources and videos we did. Most of these can be found on either Rev. Avende's Patreon or YouTube (where you'll find both the omen sermons and the Little Oaks children's religious education), or Rev. Dangler's Patreon or YouTube (where you'll find the reopening workings and a forthcoming article on the personal magical work). If you like our work, consider supporting one or both of us on Patreon: every little bit helps. There's also the Three Cranes Grove, ADF, YouTube Channel.

Other projects mentioned:

  • A "Stay-At-Home Fire Circle" for those missing festivals as much as we do, especially those late night fire drum circles
  • The "Animal Crossing: New Horizons" rite, which was livestreamed and recorded
  • MJD's "Reopening Workings" document
  • A free intro to the "Little Oaks" work

Also, if you need some work to do yourself, we can't recommend Rev. Avende's #PrayerADay Project highly enough: a prayer for each day in November. We've talked about it before on this podcast (check out the bonus episode for a refresher), and it's really an awesome way to get some structure and get involved, spiritually. We start November 1, but we're already gearing up for the work.

What is "Orange?"

Sometime after midnight, on the dark roads of Ohio in October 2019 returning from the Harvest Nights Gathering, we recorded a fairly slap-happy episode to keep ourselves awake. Our topic? Trancework. Our conversation? Wide-ranging and unfiltered. Our advice? Sometimes questionable. But we talk a lot about what works for us in trancework and what doesn't, and how we manage to achieve and understand our experiences.

This is the last recording we did going to (or from) a festival in 2019 (don't worry, we have a bit more content coming this season).

This episode also covers a lot of the practical work that we learned in Trance 1 and Trance 2 in ADF's study programs, so if you're working through the ADF Initiate or Clergy study, this might be an interesting discussion.

Revs. Avende and Dangler talk about their experiences of being priests in a variety of ways, focusing in on why they are priests, what it is that fulfills their vocation, and what it's like to have resonance between calls. It's a very late-night episode, full of weird metaphors and attempts at description, but also strangely coherent for the time it was recorded.

We're approaching the end of the Festival Season That Wasn't, and are remarkably still running off of last year's recorded sessions. We want to thank you for riding along with us, and listening throughout this time. There's more to come yet this season, and we have plans to record even more episodes, but do consider sending us topics at druidsincars@threecranes.org. Summerland 2020 is here! We're still in a socially distant world that doesn't let us come together in person for festivals, but you should know that Summerland is THIS WEEKEND, August 14-15, 2020, and we're hosting it virtually. You can still register, and some of it is FREE. Check out threecranes.org/summerland and catch us for a good ritual and some workshops!

As we got to the end of our long drive home from Harvest Nights, we worked through one of our most often requested topics: the patronage of deities and spirits.

We spoke about our personal experiences with finding deities who became patrons, how those relationships grew and changed over time, and what it was like setting boundaries in these relationships.

We also talk somewhat extensively about the process of being "claimed" by a deity, seeking one out, and even weird relationships we can't describe except to call it a "courtship."

Part Two will come next week, with a tease about the topic at the end of the episode.

We all fall off the horse from time to time, especially when it comes to study and the "homework" portion of our "religion with homework."

Priesting has a lot of strange things, and today we're going to talk about how we slide into your DMs ("direct messages") as Priests. Weird as that may sound, a large part of our work is built around personal connections, and those connections require extra steps and deeper work than the superficial feelings of connection we obtain from social media.

In our modern world of social interaction, there are a lot of ways to think we are connecting with others, but often those processes do not actually build connection with another person; they sometimes just make us feel better, instead of helping. A useful mantra for this work is, "A like is not an valid response to the pain of others."

This discussion is all about how we create meaningful interaction as Priests, going beyond the simple "like and comment" interaction when people are having a hard time. We focus heavily on actions associated with prayer, particularly the lighting of candles, to deepen that connection.

We talk a bit about Tending the Flame of Hope work, and you can find that on Facebook.

How do you build positive cultures within a working group? We talk a bit about how Three Cranes Grove, ADF, builds consent culture. We also talk a bit about our local culture of trust, and how we apply these things to initiations and other religious events.

Rev. Avende and Rev. Dangler both took a consent culture course through Cherry Hill Seminary (which all of ADF's clergy have now taken as well), and the discussion moves a bit through how we took the class and applied it to our work within the Grove.

How do you navigate your personal experiences and the lore of ancient Pagans? We'll explore the interplay of ancient lore and unverified personal gnosis (also called "UPG").

We talk a bit about how we developed some of our Grove traditions, drawing items out of the lore and iconography of Gaul and into our modern practice.

We even get a bit into "Shared Personal Gnosis" and a new concept, "Singularly Attributed Gnosis," or "SAG." You can find a bit of an expansion on the concept of SAG on Rev. Dangler's YouTube page.

Rev. Avende's Anahita Summer Solstice Rite can be found on their YouTube page.

Also mentioned in this episode is the book, From Saga's Hall: Norse Myths From a Different Point of View by Susan C. Eaves. It's a nifty retelling of the myths.

Today, we're not in cars or headed to a festival, but we're walking together in the woods, socially distanced, and discussing how we pray in a time of fear. There's a lot going on in the world today, and sometimes it's hard to keep being there for others, to pray for them and with them. We talk about some of our strategies, projects, and pain in this walk in the woods.

Also, if you need a nice change of pace, on June 7, 2020, Rev. Avende will be hosting a ritual in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, that we will livestream via YouTube at 8 PM Eastern. You can find a Facebook event, or ask YouTube to notify you of the event.

Today, we took a walk in the woods, and we wanted to invite you along. Join us for this entirely unscripted, shared meditation.

We needed our centers today, and we know you do too, so we recorded this just hours before this was released.

This is also our first bit of work with new equipment, so it might be a bit rough, but that's part of what makes it joyful. Find your center, and walk with us.

This episode is all about finding the ways that your work is enough. We talk about the process of comparing your work to the work of others, what it's like to redefine "doing enough" in your own work, and the illusion of "I-have-it-together-ness" that social media can create. What everyone does in their personal practice has to be just that: personal.

We bring up a number of ideas about how we keep doing the work, and how we help ourselves feel like we're doing the work, which is almost as important as actually doing the work.

It's true, we did just one stupid dawn rite at Harvest Nights, and here we are, waking up a dawn again, like ya do.

Occasionally, we're asked at festivals to run a dawn ritual, and we love to do it. But neither of us had been maintaining a personal practice recently for this work... but they quickly found out how quickly it can rekindle such a practice if you step back into it on accident.

We both work with Uṣás in our religious work, and it surprised us in that not-so-surprising way that the Spirits surprise folks who return to devotionals how much our experience matched between us.

This is a shorter-than-usual episode because we released a bonus meditation on Tuesday. As we move toward twice-weekly podcasting for a while, we thought now was a good time to put out a shorter piece. We'll be back with more full-length episodes next week.

One of the things that Rev. Avende and Rev. Dangler have been talking about (not in cars, not going to festivals, but otuside of that) is the lack of connection that social distancing and stay-at-home experiences can have on folks. So, for a while, we're going to offer meditations on this podcast every Tuesday for a while, upping our content so that folks at home can seek better connections in this disconnected time.

Drawn from the ADF Hearth Keeper's Way, our first meditation is a simple Two Powers. You can find the script on the ADF webiste in the Hearth Keeper's book (p. 28). This particular meditation is designed to provide a connection to other hearths within ADF, around the same central fire. Even if you're not working that path, you can still enjoy the meditation.

We hope this new segment helps a little bit in the process of rebuilding connections as we move forward as humans.

What happens when your vision or your divination doesn't come to pass?

There are a lot of things that happen in our Vision Eye, and oracles of cards and runes or of strange earthly perfumes give us many notions of what might come to pass. In today's episode, we have a wide-ranging conversation about the many ways that vision can be obtained, and talk about how to discern symbols and their meanings in the face of experience and our lives.

Special in this episode, we hit a New England toll both, and there is a "Moose Aside" from about minute 14:30 to minute 17. We get slap-happy on our roadtrips, too. If you want to hear Rev. Avende sing the Moose Song mentioned, you can find a version from Summerland 7 years ago on their YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/88Y0VXlPnlw (not for kids, friends, unless you want to explain why it's funny... and you probably don't).

What kinds of tools have we always heard we'd need, and never found a use for?   We discuss making tools, trading tools, and the types of tools that we work with. Another content warning this week, where we talk about the process of working funerals, including some discussion of funerals for pets, children, and miscarriages. It's not the bulk of the episode, but it's not insignificant.

How we wish we were going to Trillium this year, but we're not, alas. This is another episode from recording on our way to Harvest Nights Gathering last year.

We often say, "Priestwork is marrying and burying people," so today's episode is the other side of the coin from last week. We talk about the planning process, the variety of types of people we have to manage these passages for, and how we navigate the experience.

It's worth noting that this episode is a lot about how we have experienced our role as Priests, rather than about the functional aspects of writing funerals, though those come up as well. We also talk about options for what you can do if you're away from the funeral, or if the funeral for your loved one was problematic for you.

Melissa Hill did the ritual work that is mentioned around Rev. Avende's cat. She does amazing and powerful ritual and artwork, and you should find her on Patreon.

First, a quick warning: we know a lot of folks have had to postpone weddings in our current situation; this episode is very much about the joy of creating, planning, and working weddings, so we want you to know about this episode's content, since it can be pretty fresh for some folks. That said, though this was recorded before our current Stay-At-Home life, we did talk about how to manage people who cannot be present at a wedding, whether because they are ancestors, or perhaps they are unable to come (around the 29:30 mark). We hope you're able to join us for the full podcast now, or in the future.

Informal weddings where things are decided 10 minutes before the ceremony, Welcome to Night Vale-themed weddings, and traditional white weddings: these are all things we've done! We talk about what it was like to do some of the fun weddings we've done, how we manage to come up with a script, and how we manage some of the archaic customs that have been given to us over the years.

We talk about ways to make handfasting cords (and people to buy them from: check out The Pagan Peddler or The Magical Druid) and how to "block" a handfasting, plus other modules that you can add to your own weddings and handfastings. Blessing cups, omens, destroying and retrieving rings, and many more ideas come up from our experiences. We also talk about how to manage patriarchy and women-as-property traditions, as well as how to take lore and pull it into a wedding ritual (speaking specifically of Beowulf and Enright's exploration in his book "Lady With a Mead Cup").

This is a bit longer than our usual podcast (we have a lot to say on this subject, it seems), but it all fit nicely as one episode.

You may have heard by now that most of the early season festivals have been cancelled, including the Trillium Gathering, where we usually start our season.

Well, it turns out that even though we can't actually go to festivals, we recorded a large number of episodes on the way to Harvest Nights Gathering late last year. So, we have a back catalog from a simpler time that we can all enjoy listening to during this rather difficult period.

This intro was recorded during a mission to obtain the constituent parts of a garden for Rev. Avende, during which we maintained our social distances and respected the space of others. But we happened to be in a car, going to a place, and so we were able to record this short intro to the coming year.

We're both doing a lot of work to help bridge the physical gap, from a recent Spring Equinox Rite on Facebook Live, to Zoom rituals and individualized works on Facebook and Patreon. We talk about some of that work in the podcast episode today.

If you're looking for our Patreons, you can find them here: Rev. Avende's Patreon | Rev. Dangler's Patreon

If you're interested in donating to Three Cranes Grove, ADF, while we all get through this together, you can do that at threecranes.org/donate.

Festivals will start again (we're still hoping Summerland Gathering will be on in August, though it might look different than it has in the past), and we'll be back on the road together eventually. This podcast, so far as we can tell, will continue. Our hope is that by starting to put out episodes a little early, we'll all get a bit more time together, and a bit more joy in the work.

We're here for you. Stay safe, stay home, and stay (virtually) together.

If you've never been to a festival, it's the time of year to start planning your season out. Whether you make it to just one festival, or you make it to a bunch like we do, it's good to know what you're getting into.

This year, Three Cranes Grove, ADF, is picking up the mantle and hosting the Summerland Gathering near Yellow Springs, Ohio, on August 13-16, 2020. If you've been riding along with us for a while, you'll know that we're big on consent, inclusivity, and cooperative work. So, before we put up any registration pages, we began developing a code of conduct for organizers, presenters, and participants.

But of course, we have to build it first!

After our first in-person meeting to work out the Code of Conduct, Rev. Avende and Rev. Dangler chatted about the process the Grove is going through, how it felt to engage, and what it's like to workshop a code like this.

We're not done, but our start was promising, and we thought there was plenty of value in sharing our conversation.

There are a few festivals mentioned in the introduction, so here are their links:

  • ConVocation (Detroit, MI) - Feb. 20-23, 2020
  • Pagan Fire Seminars (Columbus, OH) - April 4, 2020
  • Trillium Gathering (Cross Junction, VA) - April 16-19, 2020
  • Summerland (Yellow Springs, OH) - August 13-16, 2020

Summerland doesn't have a direct registration page yet, but you'll know when it does. Also, Pagan Fire Seminars will have a remote attendance option!

What is it about talking about technology in ritual that makes us do weird things? I dunno, but come and (literally) ride along with us this time!

While we're usually audio-only, on our way to Harvest Nights Gathering in Connecticut, we decided to try something new. With a 360 camera in our back seat, we experimented to see what it might be like to sit and listen in. With the topic of tech in ritual, this seemed like an obvious opportunity to try something new and different out.

You can check out the 360 video (and even put on a VR headset and watch as if you're in the car with us!) on YouTube! (You can also navigate the 360 video with your mouse pointer, or on a phone by moving the device in full screen.)

The video carries the same audio podcast episode, so you won't miss anything if you watch this instead of listening to the pod, or vice versa.

Here's a slightly special bonus feature: you can watch the conversation from a camera on our dash as we drive out to the Harvest Nights Gathering in Connecticut in October 2019. Check out the video on the 3CG YouTube page... and maybe consider subscribing, because there's another video we're also working on to release shortly!

In this episode we talk about the similarities and the differences of being an ADF Initiate and an ADF Priest, how the direction we came at each role affects our experiences, and how those experiences manifest in our daily work and lives.

This is one of the (many!) requested topics we received at the end of last season.

The video is the same as our podcast episode, so you won't miss anything if you listen to this instead of watching the video, or vice versa.

One of our big things in Three Cranes Grove, ADF, is that we love to create. After Rev. Crystal Groves' discussion of marketing and social media strategies at Trillium 2019, we had a discussion about the creative process, what it means to connect people to others, and what it's like to produce the words for the really hard things that happen in our lives.

We also talk about ensuring that people approaching Druidry are able to see themselves as valid, joyful participants in Druidry.

Sometimes, Druids flying to festivals get picked up by Druids in cars, and that's where this conversation comes from: Rev. Avende was picking up people on their way to Summerland 2019, and took Melitta Stafford with her, which led to this conversation about creating family traditions in a multifaith household.

There's a wide-ranging conversation covering different ways we come to Paganism, how our virtues interact with householding, different family structures, and the ways that polytheism and Paganism lend themselves to creating structures that aren't traditional but are still amazing.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Arthur at Trillium 2019 about his experiences with starting, and then disbanding, a Grove that never took firm root. Hemlock Vales Protogrove, ADF, lasted for about three years in State College, PA, before it was disbanded. This interview is a sort of post-mortem on what happened several years ago.

Too often, we talk about what works for getting a group off the ground, but we don't always remember to talk about when it's time to close that group down and move on.

This conversation is about reflecting on what went right, what didn't go right, and what lessons we can take from those experiences, years on. The creation, maintenance, and disbanding of Hemlock Vales can help us all as we look at where our own Groves and groups are going... and help us decide if they are thriving or if we're just being overly hopeful.

Each year, Three Cranes Grove, ADF, does a Sunday Morning Druid Service for the Dublin Irish Festival. The attendance ranges from about 200 to 350 people each year, depending on weather and a few other factors. This year, we drew 248 to the service, and the attendees come from all walks of life: this is a truly mainstream event and a diverse crowd of folks.

We decided to record our experience in three parts for you to get an idea of what it's like to put on a ritual of this sort. We recorded after our dress rehearsal on Thursday, then in the car on the way to the rite (twice, thanks to a forgetful bard who forgot her coffee... among other important things), and finally on the way home from the rite.

You can watch our archived livecast from this year on the Three Cranes Facebook page (Like & Subscribe while there, if you'd like).

You can watch past DIF rites on our YouTube page, 3CGVideos (and an edited 2019 will eventually appear there, too, or you can watch a playlist of pre-DIF music). You can, of course, subscribe to our YouTube channel to get updates when we post new content there, too!

If you want to join us for one of these, consider attending the Dublin Irish Festival next year. It was certainly a joyful time for us!

ComFest is one of the largest events Three Cranes Grove, ADF, does all year. It's a local music/beer/arts/hippie festival here in Columbus, Ohio, and our Grove hangs out to meet people and enjoy the summer (or roast in its heat, depending on who you talk to). There's not another generally public event where we see quite so many people who fit squarely into the "target audience" of modern Druidry.

Part of what makes this event interesting is that in seeing so many people, we have to condense down what "Our Own Druidry" is, and several of us have developed an "elevator pitch" to describe Druidry in about 30 seconds or so. Today, you'll hear us call on several Grove Members, our two ADF Priests, and the Heartland Regional Druid to give their short description of 3CG, ADF, and modern Druidry.

Guests giving their Druidic elevator pitches are (in order of appearance): Shawneen, Corbin, Midnight, Michael, Thexalon, Jan.

She also offers this hymn to Hermes:

I sing of High Hermes, beloved worker of wonder, First of the Pleiades conceived while she dreamed of bright Thunder. All-powerful game-master, lord of the dead, true-thinking foreteller of what lies ahead, Code-cracking con-artist, jail-breaking the shibboleth, killed peacock-eyed Argos when you bored him to death. Winged-sandaled human-friend, fast philanthropic prophet, rejoicing in racers and instructing pick-pockets. You spin hermeneutics like you’re spitting hot rhymes, You’re the father of fraud, rearing up lies. But that same trickster offers genuine peace, Blameless, irreproachable machine of surcease. Corycian luckbringer, blessed loquacious one, Comrade of the worker and those under the gun, Employing clever rhetoric, venerable friend, Pray for your initiates when our lifetimes end: Boast about our work and our charismatic rhymes, Memorialize our memories for future lifetimes.

Sometimes, Druidry is full of weird experiences, and we're no exception. In this episode, we talk about weird things we've seen, odd experiences, and even the occasional cryptid story we've encountered in our lives.

The natural world holds a lot of wonder for us, and things at the edge of our understanding, including the border of the supernatural are fun to talk about and discuss, especially when prompted by the odd things we might see on the drive.

(This was a very unplanned topic, resulting from seeing something odd on the horizon.)

Obstacles on the Dedicant Path

The Dedicant Path (DP) is the basic study program offered by Ár nDraíocht Féin: A Druid Fellowship (ADF), and while it's a fairly basic introduction to Druidry, it's not necessarily easy.

We talk about our own experiences with the program, how the program has changed and improved, what the common stumbling blocks are, and strategies to get around them. We also talk about new ways to look at the Nine Virtues and how to approach some of the requirements creatively.

You can read their respective Dedicant work on their websites: Rev. Dangler | Rev. Avende

You can also take a look at an article by Arthur Shipkowski (who wrote the lyrics to our theme) on this topic, too, on the ADF website.

Today, we're not in a car, but we are at a festival! Rev. Dangler sat down at the 2019 Wellspring Gathering to interview The Pagan Peddler about her experiences vending at festivals, and describes some of his own in the process. At the same time, Rev. Avende sat down to do another interview, which you'll hear in early July.

One of the really nice things about this episode is you can hear some of the background sound that you'll hear at a festival: birds in the background, folks breaking camp, and the wind in the trees. It's a nice break from the road noise, we admit.

You can find out more about the shops mentioned below, which isn't an exhaustive list of the vendors at Wellspring at all. They're not sponsors of the podcast (and didn't pay for placement), they just happen to be mentioned, and they carry cool stuff we think you might like. You can find them at festivals or online.

Do you wonder how an ADF Priest prepares for and creates ritual prayers in a seemingly "off the cuff" sort of way? Rev. Avende and Rev. Dangler talk a bit about their process, and each also creates three extemporaneous prayers to different deities.

We agreed in advance: no preparation or editing in post allowed! You get the full extent of our inspiration during the prayers.

The godden we pray to are as follows:

  • Rev. Dangler - Uṣás, Vedic goddess of Dawn
  • Rev. Avende - Uṣás, Vedic goddess of Dawn
  • Rev. Dangler - Esus, Gaulish god from the Nautes Pillar
  • Rev. Avende - Hestia, Greek goddess of the Hearth
  • Rev. Dangler - Agni, Vedic god of Fire
  • Rev. Avende - Anāhitā, the Avestan Mother of Waters

(We both like Uṣas a lot.)

On the way home from Wellspring 2019, Rev. Dangler gave a solo review of the event, providing a quick recap of the weekend along with a short preview of things to come. This is a short episode, but we wanted to get one out in a timely manner.

In the early part of the review, Rev. Dangler offers his prayer to the Shining Ones from the reinstallation of Rev. Jean "Drum" Pagano as ADF Archrdruid. Here's the text of that evocation:

From deep in the dark, cool earth, A shining light arises. It brings the voice of underworld rivers Burbling to the surface. When we speak oaths, you carry them. Hear our voices, Shining Chthonic Ones!

From growing green and living city, A shining light awakens. It brings the joy of new hope and promise To fulfillment. When we speak praise, you grow it. Hear our voices, Shining Ones of the Land!

From firmament of stars and dawn’s first fingers, A shining light descends. It brings the order of the cosmos into focus, Lighting our way. When we speak truth, you lift it high. Hear our voices, Godden of Order and Cosmos!

Shining Ones, Accept our Offering!

Wellspring happens each Memorial Day Weekend near Cleveland, Ohio. You should consider joining us in the future.

We all sometimes have questions about our worth, whether we are new to Paganism or old hands. It doesn't really matter how long you've practiced or what you've accomplished, sometimes, you second-guess yourself.

Today, we talk a bit about our experiences with not feeling like we're good enough to do the work, popularly called "imposter syndrome," and how we meet it, manage it, and experience it.

So, join us as we travel from festival to festival. We'd love to have you as part of our conversation.

Welcome to the Oracular Spectacular!

Revs. Avende and Dangler chat about a seership group Rev. Avende is part of here in Columbus, Ohio. Called "The Oracular Spectacular" and dedicated to bringing divination to the public while sharpening their own skills, the crew have a unique working process that is open to all.

This episode is a crossover episode from another podcast called The Pagan Gumbo Podcast. Working out of The Magical Druid, the shop co-owned by Rev. Dangler, we talk about broad Pagan topics and have a lot of fun with a larger cast and no road noise. This episode is a dyed-in-the-wool Druids In Cars episode, though, so you'll be used to those things.

We hope you enjoy. Find us on Facebook, check us out at threecranes.org/podcast, or learn more about Druidry at threecranes.org or adf.org. You can find out more about Pagan Gumbo, The Magical Druid, and Nui Cobalt Designs at their respective sites, too.

One of the cool things we got to do at the ADF Trillium Gathering this year was offer an uncommon form of divination during the main rite: fire scrying.

This divination method involves seeking symbols in a burning ritual fire. In our case, the main ritual fire at Trillium, which has received our offerings and transformed the for the Spirits.

Fire scrying is an "open" type of divination, rather than a "closed" type. Closed divination systems have a fixed number of symbols that appear in generally (though not always) predictable arrangements. Scrying in general, and fire scrying in particular, relies on the inner language of the seer to produce meaningful experience that can be translated into something understandable by those receiving the reading.

You'll hear the actual audio from the ritual, plus a discussion that we had about our process and experiences with fire scrying in the past.

What does it mean to have an Earth-Based Spirituality when we're very far from our home planet?

Originally recorded before this podcast ever came into being, Rev. Avende and Rev. Dangler had the chance to sit down with Rev. Rob Henderson at the ADF Clergy Retreat in October 2017 and discuss just that.

Of all the people we could talk to about this, Rev. Henderson is the person we most wanted to chat with, and we're so glad we did. The topic is silly, but serious, and an ideal representation of the sort of weird things ADF Priests think about when they have time to shoot the breeze at a festival.

So join us as we chat with Rev. Henderson about Space Druidry!

Today, we interview Corbin once again at Summerland, asking him about his impressions of the manhood rite Three Cranes Grove, ADF, did for him as part of his transition, and how he was welcomed as a man into the Grove.

This is an important discussion for us because it deals with both the design of transition rituals for trans individuals, and the necessity of welcoming and acceptance of a "new-to-us" gender identity among a community of people.

Some colorful language appears, though it is bleeped in this version of the podcast.

With Rev. Dangler attending Beyond the Gates this weekend (he's a Druid in a plane, going to a festival), we're releasing another bonus episode today. This episode discusses Three Cranes Grove, ADF's, Grove Poem, Clutiā Trion Garanonon: "The Fame of Three Cranes".

About three years in, we wanted to commemorate our history in a creative, fun way. Rev. Hunt had the brilliant idea to use a poem that we could add to each year and speak at each anniversary rite.

We'll chat about how we craft each stanza (poetry by committee!), what it means to us, and how we've managed its length over the years.

At Summerland 2018, we sat down (not in our car, but in the pavilion) with Corbin to discuss gender nonconformity among the spirits, and how we can make our language and work more inclusive. It was an excellent discussion, and one we've been hoping to have for a long while.

This is the first part of two conversations with Corbin on this general topic.

This episode contians a discussion about human body parts in vision and in art. There is also some profanity that has been bleeped.

While our hosts are at the Summerland Festival, we thought we'd regale you with a bit of our lighter side of the work we like to do: some praise, both silly and sincere.

This is our first "Bonus Episode," so we call out to the being we've sometimes called, "King of the Internet": Garanus, the Crane. If anyone can help us, it's that liminal, long-necked waterbird.

Also given praise in these short recordings: The Bovine Earth Mother, Potatoes, and Redheaded Hotties.

Also, we include a meditative charm to put a toddler to sleep. After all, we're all about threading the needle between "useful" and "serious" around here.

At the 2018 Western Clergy Retreat, Revs. Jan Avende, Melissa Ashton, Sara Blackwelder, Lauren Mart, and Kirk Thomas sat down to talk about what it feels like to be geographically isolated and doing work, both before and after ordination as an ADF Priest. They discuss a variety of issues they've encoutered, talk about the differences between different parts of the country, and consider a few strategies to make the distance seem less wide and impossible to cross.

One of the suggestions they make is to seek out a festival. Consider one of the following ADF festivals that are upcoming: Summerland (Ohio, Aug. 16-20, 2018), Beyond the Gates (Washington State, Aug. 30 - Sept. 2, 2018), or Midnight Flame (Michigan, Sept. 6-9, 2018). At least one of us will be at each of these festivals. (And we'll be recording future episodes, trying to bring even more voices into the mix!)

Lucky number 13 brings us to a discussion from the Western Clergy Retreat about Ritual Bloopers and Fails! Rev. Avende sat down with several ADF Priests to discuss just how human they really are, and hear some of their best (worst) stories about how things went terribly wrong in ritual, and how they managed to keep the ritual going when it happened.

Rev. Avende is joined in this episode by Rev. Melissa Ashton, Rev. William Ashton, Rev. Sara Blackwelder, Rev. Lauren Mart, and Rev. Kirk Thomas, and each shares a story (or two) about the things that stand out in their memory as the key bloopers of their lives as Priests and celebrants of ritual.

Tune in, enjoy the laughter, and listen stories of high-flying acrobatics, trees being knocked over, wells shattering upon the stones, and (of course) things catching on fire (unintentionally)!

Driving home from one of the Bardic Live Casts we do (which is archived on Facebook, if you'd like to watch), Rev. Avende and I had an opportunity to talk about the experience. We cover a range of topics, from the spaces we've worked in to why we've moved away from livecasting public ritual and toward more interesting work.

You'll get some background on how our bards came together as a group, and how we decided to start giving these concerts... and what feeds us about the process, too.

So ride along with us as we chat about some of our behind-the-scenes work in our Grove.

If you'd like to watch our livecasts when they go live, you can do so by going ot the Three Cranes Grove, ADF, facebook page. Like our page, and the follow it as well. This second step, following the Grove, will keep us fresh in your newsfeed, and will also notify you any time we go live (which, at this point, happens about once or twice a quarter, so it's not going to overwhelm your feed). You can also catch past events on YouTube, and subscribe for new ones.

Our next livecast will be the Dublin Irish Festival ritual on August 5, 2018, at around 9:30 AM Eastern.

Our second episode on this topic, also recorded with Rev. Avende, Rev. Ashton, Rev. Blackwelder, and Rev. Mart at the Western ADF Clergy Retreat a few weeks ago, goes into some detail about the oddities (and also the dangers) of priesting as a woman. It also dives into the expectations different gender roles bring, and the difficulties of finding a place in the community as a woman Priest.

Like last week, this podcast episode contains discussions of assumptions around sexual relations encountered, but nothing explicit is ever discussed.

In this episode, which is the first of two on this topic, Revs. Jan Avende, Melissa Ashton, Sara Blackwelder, and Lauren Mart discuss some of the issues they have experienced as female Priests and leaders.

This episode was recorded at the Western ADF Clergy Retreat in 2018, just a week before the release of this episode.

They offer some examples of what they've seen as female priests and leaders, interactions they've had that felt different because of their gender, examples of how allies provide space and support, and how they have navigated these issues in the past.

In today's episode, we speak about vocation: how to recognize it, feed it, and understand where it's taking you. We also reflect on our own vocations, and how they've changed over time.

We don't just mean "preistly" vocation, though that takes up a good amount of the time, and we certainly don't just mean in ADF. This is an episode about finding what feeds you, and what fills you, and what it can do to benefit you and keep you from burning out.

What's it like to go a bit deeper down the rabbit hole of priesthood, and find yourself in new territory as a priest, and elevated to heights you weren't really expecting?

Here, Rev. Dangler talks about what it’s like to become a Senior Priest in ADF. For background, ADF has three levels of Priest: ADF Priest, ADF Consecrated Priest, and ADF Senior Priest. Rev. Dangler is a Senior Priest.

The process of becoming a Priest we describe here might seem unique to ADF, but the lessons and observations are actually quite broad for anyone seeking or advancing through their study toward Priesthood, no matter the tradition.

In this conversation, recorded on the way home from the 2018 ADF Trillium Spring Gathering, we had a broad discussion about what happens when we have a drought of work, where you feel unconnected or guilty that things have changed in your practice, and how to get back on track with the work through divination and expiation.

The thing to know is that there's nothing wrong with you when it happens, and it's not uncommon. Like any relationship, your relationship with the Spirits will change and grow in unexpected (and sometimes challenging) ways.
