In today’s enlightening episode of The Healthy Sleep Revolution, Dr. Meghna Dassani sits down with Dr. Nimisha Somaiya, the heart behind Seva Dental in Bellbrook, Ohio. With a unique blend of clinical expertise and a deeply personal journey into sleep-disordered breathing, Dr. Somaiya shares how incorporating sleep medicine into her dental practice has transformed not only her own life and her family's health—but is now changing the lives of her patients as well.
This isn’t just a conversation about straight teeth—it’s about functional dentistry and how something as seemingly cosmetic as Invisalign can have life-changing impacts when used with intention. You’ll discover how airway-focused dentistry plays a vital role in supporting proper tongue posture, creating space for better breathing, and ultimately helping to address conditions like obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
In this episode, you’ll learn:
Why crowding of the teeth isn't just an aesthetic issue—it’s an airway issue
How functional orthodontics like Invisalign can create space for the tongue and improve breathing
The importance of proper tongue posture and ideal oral resting posture
Why snoring, grinding, and bedwetting in kids should never be ignored
The variety of effective treatment options available beyond CPAP therapy
How dental professionals can be key allies in identifying and treating sleep apnea
Top 3 Takeaways from Dr. Somaiya:
Parents, pay attention to your child’s sleep habits – Snoring, grinding, and hyperactivity are warning signs, not phases they’ll “grow out of.”
Don’t ignore a sleep apnea diagnosis – If CPAP isn’t working for you, there are alternatives like oral appliance therapy that can help you breathe and sleep better.
Be your own advocate – If your doctor isn’t taking your symptoms seriously, keep pushing. Find a provider who listens and offers solutions tailored to your needs.

In this episode, we explore Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), a proven, drug-free approach to better sleep. Insomnia affects millions, causing fatigue, mood issues, and a reduced quality of life. Unlike temporary fixes, CBT-I provides lasting improvements by addressing the mental and behavioral patterns that disrupt sleep.
CBT-I includes techniques like Sleep Restriction, Stimulus Control, and Cognitive Restructuring. These methods help people build healthier sleep habits by limiting time in bed to promote sleep efficiency, associating the bed with sleep-only activities, and replacing negative thoughts about sleep with more positive, calming ones.
Research shows that CBT-I is as effective as medication for chronic insomnia, with longer-lasting results. Join us as we unpack how CBT-I can lead to better sleep, improved focus, and an overall enhanced quality of life. Tune in to learn how small shifts in thoughts and habits can make a big difference in your sleep.

In this episode, we explore the critical link between sleep apnea and testosterone levels. The relationship between sleep apnea and testosterone is complex. Sleep apnea can lower testosterone levels due to disrupted sleep patterns that interfere with hormone production. This reduction in testosterone can then worsen sleep apnea symptoms, creating a challenging cycle. Additionally, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), while beneficial for low testosterone, can sometimes exacerbate sleep apnea.
Tune in today to learn practical advice on managing both sleep apnea and testosterone levels. We discuss the importance of lifestyle changes to help improve both conditions. Understanding this link is essential for anyone looking to optimize their health and improve their quality of life.

As the new school year approaches, it’s easy to focus on school supplies and schedules, but there’s one critical area that shouldn’t be overlooked—your child’s sleep. In today’s episode, we discuss why adjusting sleep routines after summer is crucial for a successful school transition. One way to ensure your child is ready is by considering a sleep screen. A sleep screen evaluates your child’s sleep habits to identify potential issues like sleep apnea or frequent awakenings that could affect their rest and school performance. If your child snores, struggles to stay asleep, or seems unusually tired during the day, a sleep screen could be an essential step. Prioritizing sleep as part of your back-to-school preparation can help set your child up for a successful year, ensuring they’re ready to thrive both academically and socially. Tune in today!

Is it possible to treat sleep problems without medication? The answer is YES! When you're desperate for sleep, it can be tempting to reach for a sleeping pill or an over-the-counter sleep aid. But sleep medication won't cure the problem or address the underlying symptoms—in fact, it can often make sleep problems worse in the long term. In this episode, we’re joined by clinical psychologist, Dr. Shelby Harris, to help and guide us through CBT-I. We’ll tackle how this form of therapy can help everyone from children to adults.

Sleep also helps us learn and store memories. And research shows we’re more likely to have problems doing those things if you have disturbed sleep. Sleep issues and Alzheimer’s, is there a link? Let’s find out in this episode.
