Beasts of Burden is about land stewardship and enhancing the individual. To work with the land you need to work with yourself. We are about enhancing land for wildlife, finding niche income streams from your land, and ultimately how to wrestle with your shadow to become a whole individual. Balance your soul, balance the land. So come along for the journey! The hunt awaits! Well have many laughs and hopefully profound conversations!
In this episode, I start off sharing about over coming a caffeine addiction. I go into a tribute to my late Uncle Gary Woody. Our family lost my Uncle Gary to an aneurysm in early April. Gary's family held a Celebraton of Life in late July in Lapeer, MI. I traveled back with my wife and kids to spend time with family during the Celebration of Life. I felt hit with Gary's loss, but also saying good bye to the nostalgia I've held onto along with understanding family karmic cylces.
I spend the rest of the episode sharing about perspective on life. How we can become lost in the weeds (literally in the habitat world) too focused and consumed with work in general and losing perspective on life.

In this episode, I this episoe I discuss tree plantings. The philosophy behind if they're worht it? If the traditional approach of spray, burn, spray, plant 600 trees, and tubing is the most reliable approach or the approach of grass selective only herbicides with 1000 trees per acre with no tree tubes is more effective ecspcially as early successional habitat. I go into detail of my own tree planting for the family farm consisting of 5.5 acres of CRP with 622 trees per acres totalling up to 3421 trees total with 275 tree tubes. Tree plantings are nostalgic for conservationists and land owners alike, but the prep work that goes into a planting is no easy undertaking. In this episode, I interview a special guest: Becky Lee Forestry Specialist with Iowa DNR. Becky grew up in south east Iowa on her family farm. Becky was raised with a blend of agriculture and conservation. Becky has rasied a multitude of livestock such as goats, sheep, pigs, and cattle with using rotational grazing. Becky has a Bachelors of Science Degree in Forestry with a minor in Entomology from Iowa State University. I interviewed Becky how her unique blend of forestry and agriculture serves southeast Iowa landowners and farmers successfully. In this episode, we our honored to have wildlife biologist and Director of Operations of Wildlife Investments. Moriah has a Bachelors of Science of North Carolina State University and Masters of Science of Mississippi State University. Moriah served as deer biologist for the Department of Natural Resources for the states of Indiana and North Carolina. Mohriah currently works for Wildlife Investments. Moriah is skilled at plant ID and designing properties for whitetail deer.
In this conversation, Moriah and I discussed Moriah's career path. I asked Moriah life lessons from each step in life such as a student and state deer biologist. Mohriah and I had a fun conversation about managing land for optimal deer browse and cover. We discussed how one management approach might take place in the south vs the Midwest.

I talk about how to establish smooth green firebreaks for easier access for you vehicles and equipment, but also easier on your mower and way easier on your tiller (due to less tillage!). I talk about timber firebreaks from using a weed eater, tractor, or a skid steer.
Also, I highlight the use of access using your firebreaks. Allowing yourself ease of access to your stands, but also more enjoyment for family and friends.

In this episode, I share a little catch up. I talk about my food plot plans. I transition into the tasks ahead we all face on our farms. I descrive forestry management as the Holy Trinity of Forestry: TSI, Fire, Invasive Management. You need all 3 to have a healthy timber. I talk about compartmentalizing a stand out of the whole timber. I also encourage you to break down the invasive management starting from May 1st to October 1st. You have 150 days to address invasives or TSI across your farm. Throw a dart at the calendar to tackle a particular stand. This method of compartmentalizing your timber or farm as a whole will help break down the list of priorities, but also giving each stand it's individual attention instead of looking at the whole and becoming stressed.

This plan relies on hunter participation in harvest from hunters to decrease spread of CWD and also dependent on hunter participation regarding submitting deer heads or lymph nodes to DNR Conservation Officers or at the Wildlife Units to determin CWD in your area. We also dicuss the future for the whitetail deer in Iowa, how other states have approached CWD, what makes Iowa different in the plan, the predator factor, and also the relationship between Iowa hunters, whitetail deer, and the pryon itself.

In this episode, I disucss the phrase of "walking in abudance" "avoiding scarcity". This mindset affects your day to day life. "Where attention goes, energy flows" If you are only focused on the negative then you will only receive the negative. If you are only focused on tresspassers, you will have problems with tresspassers. If you focused on providing the best habitat you can possibly create, then you will have the best habitat you possibly can create. I talk about avoiding scarcity, by releasing painful yet necessary emotional blockages and I also discuss the importance of the balance of positivity and negativity. Mindset is everything. and I performed on the 20 acres of cut cedar trees. These cedars were cut in 2021. 3.5 years later they are ready to be burned. I tell the tale how the burn went. In this episode, I share an recent experience from a Iowa DNR Hunter Listener Session. One thing I noticed is people only come to these meetings if their is a problem. Folks rarely come to thank fellow conservationist employed at the DNR. So, first off thank you to our DNR staff working towards a better legacy.
The other critical componet I noticed is the blame game. It's the DNR's fault. It's the predators. It's the absentee landowners.

I continue to read from Herbert Stoddards publication, "The Bobwhite Quail". As I read from botht these books a sense of gratefulness and gratitude fell upon me for the folks that came before us. Taxidermist, citizen ornithologist trained by professionals, and forest ecologist. Herbet Stoddard with the friendship of Aldo Leopold, William McAtee, Paul Errington, Ed Komarek, and others fought against the mainstream in the defense of fire ecology, wildlife, and future conservation. I speak about the challenges this summer with invasive work, but over coming challenges with our new addition to the Dbltree Family of Tools the Stihl FS 561 D-EM. I talk about replacing the seals on my Birchmeier Sprayer and where to get the seal kits for.
The rest of the episode I attempt to focus on talking about the subconscious mind. I have learned the hard way what you say has an effect on future outcomes. I have come across a great book called Outwitting the Devil by Napoleon Hill author of "Think and Grow Rich{. In this alleged interview with the Devil, Napoleon unconvers how the Devil uses fear and the habit of drifting to rule over our minds and keep us confined. By thinking for yourself you can embrace freedom. I'll be honest I need to imrpove on keeping my thought process straight for I feel I was on a good rhythm in my dialouge then a random thought appears which probably did have a connection and due to trying to make a joke to make an uncomfortable topic more lighthearted I missed the point. I do apolgoize and it is an art form I need to craft. I feel I am closer, but I need more mental discipline.
At the end I attempt to explain this connection with the subconscious mind and how it's almost child like. It takes in everything and reflects who you really are. What you say leads to cause and effect and that is something I am learning to control so I can create a better outcome. I hope this might give you something to think about and lead you on your own path as I am too.
In this episode, I reflect on a project I drilled in May for a client. I was drilling a standard native prairie mix and I was sharing the importance of getting residue off the soil so it can dry out quickly, better surface contact with herbicides, and most important part seed to soil contact for your native prairie seed. I share about summer projectcs I am burning (see what I did there) to do with growing season burns and taking out the recurring invasive species on the farm. Finally, I share about how to remove cool season grasses in an old field situations or in prairie seedings.
In this episode, I decided to share the frustrations of owning equipment and the rising costs of maintaining equipment. I go over the acres I have drilled over the years and how much the demand for services fluctuate and how much the government through CRP can influence that. I explain the difference for me how manageing forestry is more profitable and larger habitat impact vs driving a tractor up and down the road. I have enjoyed my time doing the custom work, but I'd rather leave the tractor parked for now and enjoy the time with family working the farm and watching my kids grow up.
In this episode, I talk about different options for tree plantings with having the least amount of enviornmental impact for the future. I talk about having an early successional plant community in your tree planting. You may have to use some hardcore herbicides the fall prior to have the most effective cool season grass kill so you do not have to spray again or avoid the annual pre-emergent applications for 3-5 years.
In this episode I give an update on the challenges of a wet spring in southeast Iowa as a habitat contractor and a farm hand. I go over my battle of Candida a viscous little fungus that ruins your gut. I also talk about the turkey season. It was not successful, however the habitat work has paid off and I learned a lot about this bird. I am obsessed and can't wait to pursuit the turkey again.

Dr. Marcus is assistant Professor at the University of Florida's Department of Wildlife and Ecology. In this episode, we discussed more about fire ecology, but also discussed fire behavior and safety. Fire is one of the ultimate tools in wildlife management, but there is a time and place. Inappropriate times will lead to disaster. Let's use prescribed fire in the safest way, but also the most effective way.

In this episode, I had the honor of interviewing Doug Duren. Doug is a hunter, land specalist, and conservationist of Cazenovia, Wisconsin. Doug manages his family farm and it has been in his family for 115 years. Doug has started Sharing the Land Initiative. Sharing the Land Initiative is a network to connect hunters looking for access to hunt with landowners to acheive stewarding the land together as a partnership. In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Iowa's Department of Natural Resources own Deer Biologist, Jace Elliott. Jace has a Bachelors of Science in Conservation Biology of University of Wisconsin and a Masters of Science in Wildlife Biology of University of Auburn. In this episode, I interview in training MMA fighter, Micah Washington. Micah is from Burlington, IA. Micah grew up as an athelte being in as many sports as possinle. Micah was introduced to the world of fighting and fell in love with it. Due to a bad shoulder injury and one prescription of pain killers led Micah down a dark path of addiction. His fighting career gone and lost in the darkness. Micah met the love of his life. Micah worked on getting clean and once Micah and his wife found out they were going to have a baby, Micah was determined to stay clean. Micah started a health journey and found purpose in fitness and challenging who you were yesterday. Micah earned his certificate throuhg AFAA and NASM and is a personal trainer. He currently works at Impact Fitness in Fairfield, IA.
Micah is currently training as a MMA fighter again and his first fight of March 30th! I love Micah's story and want to have him on so he can share it.

In this episode, I interviewed Lindsay Thomas Jr. the Chief Communications Officer of the National Deer Association. Lindsay and I discussed the positive outlook on whitetail management. Land managers, hunters, and land owners are actively switching from monoculture management to quality management promoting prescribed fire, early succesional plant communities, and soil regeneration for food plots. Not intended, but this episode became a positive response ot my previous episode, "The Ecological Conscience". Lindsay and I discussed the fear mindset I've noticed from whitetail deer oriented landowners ecspecailly noticeable in the Midwest. We discussed the back and forth finger pointing from hunters about different methods of take, which I feel has been settled in this episode.
I enjoyed this conversation so much I became a member of the National Deer Association the next day. This is beyond whitetail management, this is beyond us as hunters, it's about managing the ground as God intended.
In this episode, I started off reading one of my favorite essays from Aldo Leopold from his collection of essays called, "The River of the Mother of God". The Ecological Conscience was a collection of personal examples Aldo Leopold experienced under the guise of conservation. After reading this, I came unglued. I was angry. I have my patience with the current status of so-called conservation in this country. God bless to the landowners either in state or out of state that work with locals to give them access to land. God bless those that take a kid or a veteran or disabled hunting. God bless those that are tired of the status quote and fire up a chain or light a drip torch. Matt and I discussed his origins from his beginnings in south western Indiana, moving to Wisconsin running a white water rafting buisness, then moving into market place farming eventually settling with raising mushrooms.
Matt follows the golden rule in Permaculture, "The problem is the solution". Matt was battling whitetail deer devouring his Garden Gaint or Wine Cap mushrooms and instead of fighting he embraced the behavior the whitetail were expressing. Matt has built a whole new buisness around using mycelium to attract whitetail deer, but also using mycelium to build soil in food plots as well.

In this episode we interviewed a close friend of the family Jesse Jackson Jr. Jesse is a retired grazing specialist working under the Department of Agriculture. Jesse worked all over the country, but in the last 10 years of his employment he served in our corner of the state of south east Iowa. While I drive to Nebraska for a habitat consultation I discuss my winter timber projects and the new techniques I've adapted to make the job more efficient. I have had great success with hack and squirt which has been great for pole size trees. Also I have adapted using basal bark spraying, mixing diesel and Garlon 4 Ultra to kill invasive species such as honeysuckle and multiflora rose.

This was a great honor to listen to the great mind of Paul Stamets share his experience, expertise, and wisdom with the proper therapeutic use of psilocybin mushrooms and the steps to decriminalize psilocybin from Iowa code. I know not the average hunting topic, but this is what Beast of Burden is about. It's about finding true beasts of burden and both Mr. Stamets and Rep. Jeff Shipley have found their burdens worth carrying. Paul Stamets has also done countless hours of research on gourmet and medicinal mushrooms. Paul has also found practical ways of saving the honey bee from colony collapse using mycelium of reishi, turkey tail, and other powerful mushrooms. All of the critters will come. It comes down to balance. The more opportunities you present for wildlife and ALL wildlife will requrie balance.
