OUTTA SIGHT stomp into 2104 with a Northern Soul double-delight courtesy of Sony Music and BMG.
First on the deck are Pat Upton’s California one-hit wonders Spiral Starecase. The band, from Sacramento, were formed in 1964 as The Fydallions and were signed to Columbia in ’68 by A&R man Gary Usher. It was Usher who pushed for the name change to the Spiral Starecase, after the film but with a deliberate misspelling. Usher also produced their first singles: an upbeat cover of the Drifters soul workout “Baby What I Mean” and “I’ll Run” coupled with “Inside, Outside, Upside Down”, a Mod/Soul collectable by Al Torino. But, it was Upton’s own composition “More Today Than Yesterday” that propelled the band to #12 in the Billboard Hot 100, selling over one million copies and scoring a gold disc. An album of the same name followed plus a couple more singles but they were unable to repeat their earlier success and within 18 months they disbanded.
Next we feature two all-time Northern Soul classics from the New Jersey trio, The Moments, aka Harry Ray, Al Goodman and William Brown. The top-side, “I’ve Got The Need” is an original album-only cut taken from their 1975 Sharp LP on Joe and Sylvia Robinsons Stang label. The song, a massive Blackpool Mecca spin at the time of release, also enjoyed popularity at Wigan Casino by Chuck Jackson and Cleethorpes by Spooky & Sue. The flip side is no slouch either. “Nine Times” from 1976 is a true club-classic with its unforgettable “telephone” intro calling you onto the dance floor. Both sides remain floor fillers today and are available for the first time back-to-back.

First under the spotlight is former Raelette Mary Ann Fisher with her $300+ Fire rarity “Put On My Shoes”. This swinging R&B growler from 1958 has been a floor-filler across Europe for a number of years and is an essential disc for any DJ.
Next we feature two in-demand tracks from one of the most important R&B artists of all time…Jimmy Ricks. Both tracks are from his post-Ravens career and include his insistent version of the Otis Blackwell song “Daddy Rollin’ Stone” and the rare rocker “Bad Man Of Missouri”.
Finally we present two hot 45s from Gene C. Redd’s Ohio Redbug label. Both sides were produced by the legendary bandleader and manufactured at the local King pressing plant.

After an incredible three years Outta Sight are proud to announce the release of the 100th Northern Soul reissue in the highly collectable OSV series.
The Invitations first burst onto the UK rare soul scene at the famed Twisted Wheel club in Manchester with their UK Stateside release “What’s Wrong With Me Baby?”. Still hugely popular today, this original American DynoVoice recording from 1965 was penned and produced by writing partners Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell who also brought us The Toys “A Lover’s Concerto” and Odyssey’s 1977 disco classic “Native New Yorker”. The duo also delivered The Invitations final DynoVoice release in 1966 - the iconic “Skiing In The Snow”, forever synonymous with the heyday of Northern Soul when 2,000 young soulies packed the cavernous dance floor at Wigan Casino.

Welcome to part four of the Modern Soul Essentials imprint from Outta Sight featuring hot off the press crossover and in-demand NuSoul.
Here we pay homage to the birth of Modern Soul as we step back I time to the seventies with a hat trick of Crossover Classics courtesy of Demon Music Group and Parlophone.
First up is southern-soul singer Sidney Joe Qualls with his perennial dance floor favourite “I Don’t Do This” taken from his Ch-Sound LP So Sexy. The B-side features his earlier Dakar 45 “Run To Me”, a vibrant rendition of the Sam Dees song.
Next we have Texas soul man Bobby Patterson and two superb album only tracks taken from his LP rarity It’s Just A Matter Of Time recorded at Sound City studios, Shreveport for Paula Records. The first official 7-inch reissue of these in-demand cuts.
Finally we present another ‘first’ for Outta Sight… the official reissue of the hugely popular 1977 Percy And Them Roulette single “Look In The Mirror Of My Eyes” / “Trying To Find A New Love”. Two awesome sides penned by Detroiter John ‘Percy’ Hargove.

Idris Muhammad was born in 1939 and began playing the drums at age 8 in his native New Orleans. He became known as one of the most innovative drummers in soul music performing with singers Sam Cooke, Jerry Butler, The Impressions and Roberta Flack.
Here we feature his New York Loft underground classic "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This".

Glen Anthony Henry is a modern day R'n'B singer hailing from California, USA with a sound steeped in authentic American 70s soul. Following a successful collaboration with Dr Dre in 2001, Glen relocated to Spain where he teemed up with Sweet Vandals producer/arranger/composer Carlo Coupé, a partnership that produced our killer track "I Don't Know".

The sad story of Inell Young begins with her early recordings for Eddie Bo as part of the Explosions alongside Juanita Brooks and Mary Jane Hooper. Unfortunately her career and life were cut short as a result of drug addiction and we are left with only a handful of songs from such a promising young talent.

OUTTA SIGHT PRESENTS three more stunning 45s…
First up are the West Coast Fi-Dels with their crowning glory “Try A Little Harder” released on the L.A. based, Vee-Jay owned, Keymen label. The Fi-Dels, or Fidels, originally signed to Lew Bedell’s Doré label before the move to Keymen. Their stay was short-lived and a switch to Maverick heralded their crossover double-sider “I Want To Thank You” / “Boys Will Be Boys”.
Next in line is the majestic Ruby Winters who signed to Diamond Records in 1966 where she scored a minor hit alongside Johnny Thunder – “Make Love To Me”. A decade later found her in the UK top-ten pop charts with her re-recording of “I Will”. Here we feature her two most popular rare soul collectables “Better” and the sublime “In The Middle Of A Heartache”.
Finally, we present two early New York soul classics courtesy of Texas born Johnny Nash. The top-side “Ol’ Man River” is a stunning soulful rework of the show tune standard. The flip-side is the much-overlooked “I Lost My Baby” from the earlier ABC-Paramount recordings. It dates from 1961 but sounds much later and is one of his most sought-after 45s.

The Electrifying Cashmeres from Akron, Ohio present their inspired rendition of the Jr. Walker classic “What Does It Take”. The band - Chopper, Gerald, Tiny and Don McClain - originally signed to the Rubbertown label before joining Sound Stage 7 where they cut three 45s. The in demand Continental Showstoppers side - “Not Too Young” - now commanding £200+ was written by Jackey Beavers and also recorded by him for Mainstream Records.
Next in line are two sides from Bob Crewe’s iconic New Voice imprint. The top side is the £500+ sublime rarity “Isn’t It Just A Shame” by Kenny Wells. The flip side, recorded just months before, couldn’t be further away musically and captures the heyday of Wigan Casino’s Northern Soul domination.

Best known as Merry Clayton, a former Raelette and background vocals on the Rolling Stones hit “Gimme Shelter”. Other goodies include Mel Tormé’s anthemic vocal version of “Comin’ Home Baby” coupled with the original, LP only, jazz instrumental by the Dave Bailey Quintet. Plus, two R&B big hitters back-to-back, Beverley Ann Gibson’s £100 “Dollar Bill” and Rosemary’s £200 “Not Much”.

OSV091 A. The Sapphires - The Slow Fizz B. The Sapphires - Baby You Got Me
The final recording for Jerry Ross’ super group the Sapphires. “The Slow Fizz”, according to girl group expert Mick Patrick, is “a near perfect Go-Go anthem” and who can disagree. Like many great records of its genre it failed to chart but went on to become a favourite on the UK Northern Soul scene and still is to this day. The flip side, “Baby You Got Me”, was unreleased at the time and employs the same backing track but with a different lyric. Almost 50 years on it finally gets an official vinyl release

Two sides from Hollywood’s ERA label. The top side is the rarity “So In Luv” , originally released on the tiny Baby Luv logo in 1967, the same year as Felice Taylor’s “It May Be Winter Outside” which bears a remarkable similarity. The flip side is the forgotten dancer “I’ve Arrived” by Steve Flanagan, also recorded by Jewel Akens.
OSV093 A. Virgil Henry - You Ain't Sayin' Nothin' New B. Italian Asphalt & Pavement Co - Check Yourself
Virgil Henry’s crossover classic “You Ain’t Sayin’ Nothin’ New” which also saw a release on Tamla 54212. The flip side is a fine crossover take on the Intruder’s “Check Yourself” by Italian-American New Yorkers the Duprees masquerading as the Italian Asphalt & Pavement Company.

Welcome to part 8 in the Outta Sight Rhythm & Blues archive featuring another tranche of rarities and new-to-vinyl couplings.
The spotlight this month falls on Jerry (Count) Jackson (aka Jerry LaCroix) and the awesome indemand R&B dancer “The Band Doll”. Originally issued on Heuy Meaux’s Tear Drop label in 1962 and reissued in ’65 on Pic 1 attributed to the Boogie Kings who LaCroix later joined. Also, currently indemand, is John Lee Hooker’s fabulous “Shake It Up And Go” recorded in Culver City, March 9, 1961 and originally issued on his eponymous Galaxy LP 201. The flip side is another album track, “Twistin’ At The Pit”, originally issued in 1961 on the Regent LP Twist Party attributed to Big Daddy. It is identical to the later Music Maestro 45 correctly identified as Herb Zane.

“What” - a true Northern Soul anthem, originally performed by Judy Street. Written and produced by H B Barnum, “What” first took the scene by storm when played at the Leeds All-dayers in 1973 and went on to become a floor-filler at Wigan Casino. Here, for the first time, Indiana blue-eyed soul sister Judy is paired with L.A. girl Tina Mason and her 1967, album only, rendition of the song. “What” also shot to No.3 in the UK pop charts in 1982 when covered by Soft Cell. In a recent interview Marc Almond recalled that they had actually recorded a cover of Franki Valli’s “The Night” but the record company chose “What”.
Next up is another anthem that could have been tailor-made for the Northern Soul scene and was catapulted to cult status when played at Manchester’s famed Twisted Wheel. Here, for the first time, we offer vocal and instrumental back-to-back.
Finally, we pay homage to the late great Jewel Akens who sadly passed away in March, 2013. Akens will be forever remembered for his 1965 No.3 pop hit “The Birds And The Bees”, but here we feature his two Northern Soul classics “My First Lonely Night” and the original cut of “A Slice Of The Pie”.
“Something For The Weekend”, by house music DJ, Ben Westbeech, has been packing the Modern Soul dance floors across the country and is now crossing over to the Northern Soul venues, making it the hottest record in the land…right now!
Produced by Enzyme Black, “Something For The Weekend” is a house-inspired, disco-tinged feelgood groove written and recorded by accomplished musician and DJ Ben Westbeech and taken from his album 'There’s More To Life Than This'.
Also featured in the package is the undisputed master of modern disco Joey Negro who adds his unique magic to the main mix.

OUTTA SIGHT PROUDLY PRESENT the "Jerry Ross" series.
In the early sixties the girl group sound was dominated by maverick male producers: behind the Crystals was Phil Spector; the Shangri Las had Shadow Morton; the Chantels were steered by Ritchie Barrett and the Yum Yums, Sapphires and Candy & The Kisses were the protégés of Jerry Ross.
The Yum Yums, named after a brand of candy similar to M&M’s, cut just one 45 for Jerry at Bell Sound studios, New York in 1965, before signing to Arctic and changing their name to Honey The Bees. The Sapphires faired better cutting a series of 45s and an LP, originally at Virtue in Philadelphia, before Jerry made the switch from Swan to ABC in ’64.
Candy & The Kisses (originally known as the Symphonettes) reached no. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their debut 45 “The 81” in 1965. Jerry recalls, “Kenny Gamble and I were at a record hop where the kids were doing a new dance called The 81 to Martha & The Vandellas ‘In My Lonely Room’. Kenny and I went back to my office and wrote the song there and then”.
Father Angelo’s ‘Angels’, a 9-piece blue-eyed soul band with a self-contained horn section, were brought to Jerry via WAEB DJ Gene Kaye. Their anthem “Bok To Back” was recorded at Bell Sound Studios in 1967.

New-to-7 inch pressing of Gavin Christopher’s compelling dancer “This Side Of Heaven” taken from his eponymous RSO LP from 1979.
Born in 1956, in Chicago, writer/producer Gavin is the brother of House music diva Shawn Christopher and was a former member of Lyfe and High Voltage. He has written for Chaka Khan and Rufus as well as Herbie Hancock and Ava Cherry and produced Grandmaster Flash and Mariah Carey.
The flips side, "We'll Always Be Together, is also drawn from the same LP.

The spotlight this month falls on “cool hand” Oscar Brown Jr revered by UK MOD’s for his landmark 1960 LP 'Sin And Soul', from which we draw the MOD and civil rights anthem “Work Song”. We also feature the first 7-inch reissue of Brown’s self-penned and original recording of the Northern Soul classic “The Snake”. Brown’s jazz/soul workout from ’63 is the definitive version of the song popularized in the early seventies by Al Wilson.
But, let’s not forget our big-ticket rarities and in-demand sounds from Helen Troy, "I Think I Love You", and Frances Burnett, "How I Miss You So".

OUTTA SIGHT PROUDLY PRESENT ‘Part 5’ in the collectable Cameo-Parkway reissue series.
First in line is the highly prized “False Alarm” by the little known Tari Stevens, aka Christine Cooper (real name Dolores Cooper). The 3 session singers on the set, recorded 14th March 1966, are Toni Wine, Valerie Simpson and Lesley Miller. A masterpiece of song writing and arrangement that could have been tailor-made for the Northern Soul scene. The flip side, “The Way I Feel About You” was a minor hit for the Bonnie & Lee, a superb vocal over a pounding dance beat.
Next up is the seldom heard, and rarely seen classic “My Heart, Your Heart” by Rose Marie Casilli (aka Janie Grant), also recorded in ’66 by The Dolls. The track was originally slowed down for the 45 release, the master tape is actually 5% faster. Coupled with the forever popular “Picture Me Gone” by Brooklyn singer-songwriter Evie Lourette Sands.
Finally, the original coupling of Dee Dee Sharp’s in-demand rarity “Deep Dark Secret”. Collect The Series!

They were typical of aspiring American vocal groups in the wake of Stevie Wonder’s landmark LP of 1973 - Innervisions. The album had heralded a change in Black music with the emergence of the synthesizer, the heavier funk bass lines and biting social commentary. Innervision embraced the new sound and the spirit of the time writing and recording an eclectic mix of contemporary songs aided by Detroit’s top session players, producers and studios. Commercial success evaded them and they disbanded in 1978 but not before recording an albums worth of quality soul/funk/disco showcased here for the first time.
Includes all commercial and surviving studio recordings plus studio demos "I'm Just A jealous Guy" and "So This Is Love" plus the bands version of the Stevie Wonder song "Thank You Love" and Larry Rice's take on "A Plain Brown Wrapper".

The star of the show is the Wigan Casino floor filler “Country Girl” by Vickie Baines. Originally played by Wigan DJ Richard Searling covered-up as Christine Cooper. Check out the original B-side “Are You Kidding” for a nice surprise.

THE INSPIRATIONS - YOUR WISH IS MY COMMAND
The title track from the forthcoming Outta Sight album "Your Wish Is Our Command – The Northern Soul Of Chicago", the first of two compilations packed with hits and rarities from the Windy City. By the mid-sixties the Chicago music scene was on fire, rivaling Detroit with its own brand of uptown soul courtesy of major players – Vee-Jay, Okeh and Chess – who had fueled much of the cities output since the 1950s. Encouraged by this success many smaller labels were formed and perhaps the most important of which was George Leaners One-derful Records group. Partnered by his brother Ernest, who ran their distribution company United Record Distributors, the entrepreneurs launched their One-derful powerhouse in 1962 and quickly added M-Pac!, Mar-V-Lus, Halo and Midas from which we take our golden wonder. Originally released in 1967 for the super-fine ballad “I’ll Take A Chance On You” which was at odds with the Leaner’s trademark gritty, kitchen-sink soul. Now consigned to the B-side of our up-tempo Northern Soul dancer “Your Wish Is My Command”. The Inspirations were one of a number of vocal groups sharing the name at the time but our trio from Milwaukee – William Miller, Willie Patterson and Clarence Campbell – are known only for their loan Midas rarity.
THE VALENTINES - BREAKAWAY / OHIO PLAYERS - LOVE SLIPPED THROUGH MY FINGERS
Outta Sight proudly presents two classic Northern Soul oldies from the heyday of Wigan Casino: The Valentines “Breakaway” and the Ohio Players “Love Slipped Through My Fingers”. Released in conjunction with Odeon Entertainment to promote the 2012 DVD documentary "Keep On Burning". Featuring interviews with key DJ’s, journalists and promoters - filmed on location at Oxford Street’s 100 Club and Manchester’s iconic Twisted Wheel – the documentary reveals a unique insight into the music phenomenon that came of age in the clubs of Northern England in the mid-seventies. The DVD also features archive Northern Soul performances plus Granada’s 1977 TV documentary "This England" with an exclusive interview and commentary by its BAFTA award-winning director Tony Palmer.

The star turn this month has to go to Sherri Taylor and her debut 45 “He’s The One That Rings My Bell”. Co-penned by Berry Gordy’s writing partner Billy ‘Roquel’ Davis and co-owner of Detroit’s Anna Records with Berry’s sister Gwen. Originally issued on the tiny PG (£700) label before being picked up by it’s neighbour Gloreco (£500). Coupled with Jo Ann Henderson’s £250 Phonograph recording “Baby Please Don’t Go” this is a 45 to treasure.
We also venture to Chicago for two killer sides from Tommy "Madman" Jones' MAD label - Billy "The Kid" Emerson "I Never Get Enough" and the the original version of "Sugar In my Tea" by Piney Brown.
Finally, two Northern Soul R'n'B anthems - "Emperor Of My Baby's Heart" by Kurt Harris and the original version of "Chills And Fever" by Johnny (aka Ronnie) Love.

IT’S TAKEN 35 YEARS, BUT IT’S WORTH THE WAIT! Welcome to the second set of 45s in our exclusive Cameo-Parkway re-issue series. It was some 35 years ago, that Decca’s London subsidiary released Yvonne Baker, Bobby Paris and Bunny Sigler, and now, finally, Outta Sight is proud to make them available again.
First in line is Yvonne Baker's cherished classic “You Didn’t Say A Word”. With its haunting James Bond riff it is fitting that this special reissue coincides with Bond’s 50th Anniversary. The B-side sees the first ever reissue of Hattie Winston’s rarity “Picture Don’t Lie”. Our second 45 features the original coupling of Northern Soul’s signature song “Night Owl” by Bobby Paris. Last but not least, Bunny Sigler’s floor-packer “Girl Don’t Make Me Wait” coupled with the vastly underrated “Follow Your Heart”.

Maurice Williams’ 1967 New Orleans dancer “Being Without You” is currently enjoying a Northern Soul revival. Prices for this reactivated floor-packer have soared making our 2012 reissue all the more attractive. The flip side, “Return”, was recorded a year later for Marshall Sehorn’s New York based Sea-Horn Records… 2 hard-to-find rare soul classics for the price of one!
Saxie Russell’s Chicago dance track, the eerie “Psychedelic Soul”, has haunted the Northern Soul scene since it was first played at the legendary Catacombs Club in Wolverhampton in the early seventies, not long after it was recorded. Saxie’s real name is Vernon Taplin, a co-writer of the track along with John ‘Stormy’ Colley. Our ‘exclusive’ flip side features, for the first time, an unusual out-take that surfaced a few years ago on a studio acetate from Colley’s personal collection. Sonically, not the best recording, but historically fascinating and a unique opportunity to hear Saxie and the session players letting their hair down! Keep The Faith!
