On this episode 181 I am delighted to be joined by Ronan Conway. An expert in team cohesion and connection with clients including sports teams, corporates and the irish prison system.

At one point, he had it all on paper — a degree from UCC, a promising hurling career with Cork, and a good job in the tech industry. But beneath the surface, he was drifting. We explore the journey from feeling lost to finding his way and becoming a key figure in the high-performance sport space.

We unpack what it really means to be a facilitator, how to create powerful environments for growth, and why the best teams already have the answers — they just need help finding them. From big career pivots, the art of facilitation, to Lambay Island retreats and lessons from Jack McCaffrey & Declan Darcy, this is a wide-ranging conversation on connection, team culture, and coaching from the inside out.

Whether you're a coach, player, or just curious about the human side of high performance, this episode offers insights, stories, and practical advice to help build stronger teams — and more self-aware leaders.

On this episode of The Sideline Live Podcast, Orla sits down with renowned Irish athletics coach Jeremy Lyons for an in-depth conversation on the art and science of coaching.

From developing young talent at grassroots level to preparing athletes for the biggest stage in sport; the Olympic Games.

Jeremy has been a key figure in Irish track and field for over two decades, bringing a wealth of knowledge, experience, and calm leadership to his athletes. In 2009 he founded the Dublin sprint group in Santry and coached 3 athletes to the olympic games. As part of the coaching team behind Sophie Becker and the Irish women’s 4x400m relay squad, Jeremy played a central role in preparing her for the stunning run to the Olympic final — a historic moment for Irish athletics.

Jeremy stepped away from high performance coaching to focus on grassroots and in this episode explains why. We also discuss improving support for coaches and his in depth planning for his athletes. A big thanks for Jeremy for his time.

On episode 168 I am delighted to be joined by former international and professional footballer Julie-Ann Russell.

A talented all around athlete she recently retired from football at club and international level, however has refused to sit still and has returned to play basketball and Gaelic football with Moycullen (plus running a marathon and probably a Hyrox down the line).

Julie-Ann returned to the national team a year on from having her daughter Rosie reuniting with her former coach Eileen Gleeson, grabbing national attention with her goals vs England & France.

On top of all of what she has achieved in sport she has built a successful corporate career with Microsoft including a stint in Australia while also playing football at a professional level.

We discuss balancing a career in sport, identity as an athlete, becoming a mother and returning to play sport, perspective and awareness as a footballer, the ingredients for success on and off the pitch, and so much more.

This is an honest and insightful account of what it takes to become an elite athlete for players, coaches and parents.

A legend on and off the pitch, I loved this chat with Julie-Ann. It’s easy to see why she has found so much success. Here are some of her key ingredients to success;

After chatting with Daniel it’s clear that his confidence is built by the level of training that he does on a daily basis in Loughborough University. He self awareness has been key to maximising his potential but also the determination that it takes to not only chase your dreams but to blaze his own path.

Already in the history books as one of Ireland’s greatest athletes and Olympians, it’s exciting to see what he will achieve in the next decade. Starting off with the Irish Open Swim championships next week in the National Aquatic center.

Daniel thanks a million for your time! Looking forward to following your career and hopefully recording a reflection interview after the Brisbane games in 2032.

He suddenly realised there was very little research in on halftimes and set up his business Minute 9 (hear the reason for the name in the podcast!) to help coaches and teams manage their halftimes. That business has grown to 8 staff members and work with some of the biggest sports teams and clubs in the world.

From what not to do, to ideas on how to manage your team talk, to insights from top teams and coaches this is a great listen for any coaches and those part of a backroom team.

I reached out to Eamon 12 months ago after researching the topic and came across his work with minute 9. Since connecting on LinkedIn I've been fortunate to pick his brain about halftimes, protocols and more. It's been great to see the growth of his business and look forward to watching it prosper for years to come! From humble beginnings in Wexford to becoming a world renowned coach and mentor, Walsh's journey is a testament to his passion for the sport and pursuit of excellence. Billy provides insights into managing an athlete in the ring, building the Irish High Performance boxing unit from sleeping on the floor of the gym to olympic gold medals and altering his accent for his new athletes in Colarado. He also offers a fantastic insight in managing and communicating with his athletes in the ring. As an athlete he competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics and has multiple Irish titles to his name. He began as Head coach of the Irish High Performance Boxing programme in 2003 and in 2016 was awarded IBA Coach of the year (Amateur). He moved to the USA and is now tasked with building the USA into a new boxing powerhouse. Billy was a joy to learn from and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation.

On episode 148 I am delighted to be joined Matthew Bell. An accomplished international player Matthew won over 100 caps for Ireland but experienced heartbreak as he was not selected to travel to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. At 26 years of age while pursuing his 3rd season of professional hockey in Germany, Matthew was diagnosed with a brain tumour the size of three golf balls. He underwent immediate intervention which prevented Matthew from experiencing a fatal brain haemorrhage. He was later transferred by air ambulance back to Northern Ireland to complete chemotherapy, radiotherapy. Matthew has 5 surgeries in 6 weeks and was bed bound as he had to learn to walk, talk, and eat again. During his 6 months in hospital he dreamt of setting back out on the pitch with his local club, Bambridge. While many including his father wondered would he ever run again, Matthew’s determination prevailed and on April 20th 2021, Matthew walked back onto the hockey pitch for his first training session in 587 days. Matthew is back competing at local level with his club and has recently gotten engaged to his Fiancé Jane. During his recovery he came across Clodagh Dunlop, a police officer who suffered a brain stem stroke. Matthew reached out to Clodagh on Instagram and she sent him his book. This inspired Matthew to document his own journey and last year he released his memoir Second Chances, and has kindly donated all proceeds to @friends_of_the_cancer_centre

Matthew’s story was brought to my attention by a close friend in late 2020 and I was delighted to connect with him during the launch of his book last year. His story is inspiring and a testament to his resilience & attitude. Wishing Matthew continued success on and off the hockey field. On episode 136 I am delighted to be joined by Paralympian sprinter Orla Comerford. At 11 years of age Orla’s eyesight deteriorated due to a condition called Stargardt's disease. She competes in the T13 category and competed in the 2016 and 2021 Paralympic Games. Off the track Orla is a visual Artist who recently graduated from NCAD. I originally heard Orla’s story at the Sport Ireland Women in Sport Coaching event in late 2022 and was inspired by the efforts of her coaches to keep her involved and included in all sports. Orla has experienced spiralling ankle injuries however is back to her peak as she finished 4th in the 2023 World Championships in Paris with a PB of 12.14. Her performance earned a spot in the 2024 Paralympics games. Orla is refreshingly honest as we discuss her journey to date, the incredible coaches she has had from a young age, identity as an athlete, balancing athletics & art and so much more. It was such a pleasure recording with Orla and I’m looking forward to keeping up with her journey! Enjoy 😊

Episode notes/Takeaways:

  • The positive effect and influences that coaches can have on athletes. Orla’s swimming coach taught her class to count their strokes in the pool, rather than singling Orla out and asking her to do something different by herself. Her coach recognised Orla’s condition and involved the entire group allowing her to be included, without Orla knowing it was tailored for her.
  • Accessible facilities: Orla makes a fantastic point of how the olympic village is built every 4 years to host the olympic & Paralympic Games and is completely accessible. However when she comes home to Ireland we lack accessible facilities. How can this be changed?
  • Dream, Determination, Dedication, Damo - Raheny Shamrocks Underage Athletics coach
  • “Think about the things you’re good at because you’re actually really good at them”… Orla worked with Jessie Barr, sports psychologist, in preparation for the Paralympic Games in Tokyo and was unfortunately experiencing a run of injuries. Jessie and Orla worked on focusing on what she can control and acknowledge what you are good at when you’re spiralling in negative thoughts.

On episode 124 I am delighted to be joined by Irish sporting all time great Cora Staunton.

Cora made her senior at 13 and went on to win 4x All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championships, in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 11 All-Star awards, making her one of the most decorated players in the history of ladies football.

Beyond the silverware, Staunton's impact on Mayo football can be measured by her consistency and longevity. From her debut in 1995 to 2018 when she left the panel Cora accumulated a whopping 59 goals and 476 points. Along with 6 All Ireland Club titles with Cornacon. Her commitment to the Mayo jersey and her passion for the game, has solidified her status as one of the greatest players to ever represent the county male or female.

A trailblazer, Staunton signed with the Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants in the AFL Women's league in 2017 becoming the first Ladies footballer to make the move down under.

In 2019, she faced a significant setback, suffering a horrific leg injury in her late 30s. Demonstrating her characteristic resilience, Cora made a remarkable recovery, returning to the field with the same vigor and passion as she had before. She finished her career with 50 appearances and 55 goals, which made her the all-time leading goalscorer for the giants, and joint all-time scorer in the league overall.

We discuss her career, consistency and longevity, the recovery from her fracture in 2019, the future of Irish players in Australia, the leadership team in AFL Organisations, becoming a performance coach with Galway Senior Camogie and more!

On episode 122 I am delighted to be joined by one of Ireland’s best ever female basketball players Claire O'Sullivam (nee Rockall). Claire grew up in Galway before spending time in the US playing college basketball. She returned to Cork and joined Glanmire and since then has cemented herself as one of Ireland’s greatest female athletes.

Despite this she has over 25 senior caps and accumulated an incredible list of accolades playing in our domestic leagues.

O’Sullivan returned to play Superleague with Glabnmire after giving birth to her daughter Emma and in 2023 captured the Superleague title with impressive performances throughout the season. She continued this into the summer as she suited up for the Senior Women’s 3x3 team in Cyprus. So take a listen and learn from a future unanimous Basketball Hall of famer Claire as she gives us an insight into her mentality and work ethic that helped her become the player she is today. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did!

On episode 118 of The Sideline Live podcast, host Orla speaks to Paul Blake, owner of a BBL franchise called Newcastle Eagles. Paul has been in the basketball industry for more than 20 years and is passionate about growing the sport in the UK. He has a deep understanding of what it takes to run a successful franchise and shares valuable insights during the episode.

(Note this episode was recorded on March 17th 2023 live from Vertu Motor Arena Newcastle, UK)

Paul believes that running a successful BBL franchise requires hard work, dedication and passion. According to him, it's important to have a clear vision and strategy in place from the very beginning. "Running a BBL franchise is challenging, but it's also very rewarding. It's a constantly evolving business and you have to be adaptable to succeed." He emphasizes the need for franchise owners to constantly adapt to changing market trends and stay ahead of the competition. Paul also shares some of the challenges he has faced in running the Newcastle Eagles franchise, such as securing funding, attracting sponsors and building a strong fan base.

Newcastle Eagles is more than just a basketball franchise, it is deeply rooted in the community. "Community engagement is key to running a successful BBL franchise. We make sure that we're actively involved in our local community and that we're providing opportunities for people to get involved with basketball." The franchise has a strong focus on community engagement and social responsibility. Paul talks about the four values of the Newcastle Eagles community foundation - education, health and well-being, sport and community. He explains how the franchise is using basketball as a tool to empower and inspire young people in the community. The foundation offers a range of programs and initiatives to support education, health and well-being, and community development.

Paul also talks about the impact of COVID-19 on the BBL and the Newcastle Eagles franchise. He explains how the pandemic has affected the franchise financially and how they have had to adapt to the new normal. Despite the challenges, Paul remains optimistic about the future of the BBL and the Newcastle Eagles franchise. "It's important to have a long-term vision for your franchise. You can't just focus on short-term success, you have to think about building a sustainable and successful organization for years to come." He believes that basketball has the potential to grow exponentially in the UK and that there are many opportunities for franchise owners to tap into.

Overall, this episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the basketball industry or running a successful franchise. Paul's insights and experience provide valuable lessons for franchise owners and club executives looking to grow their teams or clubs and make a positive impact in the community

The power of resilience with Chloe Mustaki, Bristol City and Irish senior international footballer.

As a teenager Chloe led and captained her Irish U19 team which included players such as Katie McCabe, Sarah Rowe, Amy O’Connor and more, to the semi finals of the European championships however felt unwell during the tournament. Within 12 months she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Chloe battled her way back on to the pitch and found success following her treatment and was called up to the senior team in 2020. During Ireland’s final training session ahead of their 1-0 victory against Greece, Mustaki ruptured her ACL.

But she battled again and in just under a year from returning to the sport won the WNL title with Shelbourne, signed a professional contract with Bristol City, made her competitive debut against world number 2 Sweden in the 1-1 draw.

Chloe’s refreshing and honest answers give you a insight into her mentality as an elite level footballer and one of the most resilient athletes I’ve ever met. Do not miss this episode!!

The coaching series is back in partnership with Chin Up Goggles. Just a quick note this episode was recorded a number of weeks ago following London's first National League win vs Carlow.

I am delighted to welcome London GAA Senior Manager Michael Maher. Michael is a London born former player and now coach. He was instrumental in creating and implementing the South London GAA Feile teams, spent time as a semi professional soccer manager before getting involved with Ciaran Deely's London squad. In late 2019 Michael took on the Senior Manager role with Dublin yet had to wait over two years for his first competitive game. I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with Michael so I hope you get something from the episode

On Episode 61 I am delighted to be joined by former Dublin Minor hurling goalkeeper Cormac Ryan. Weeks after playing in an All Ireland Final Cormac was diagnosed with a heart condition and had a pacemaker inserted at 18 years of age which turned his life upside down.

Cormac took a year out of college and returned to the U21 County Set up as the substitute goalkeeper however had begun to suffer with his mental health. This went on for many years under the surface and Cormac describes how the GAA culture negatively attributed to this.

Cormac had plans to cycle across the United States in 2020 in aid of Pieta House and BodyWhys, while the cycle was postponed due to the pandemic Cormac’s mental health deteriorated and he sought help in the Summer of 2021. Cormac agreed to take part in the RTE documentary Unspoken to help others in his situation. Cormac attended a private clinic and over 8 weeks and following his treatment he began cycling from to Athens with two friends, just under 5000km raising €48,015. Cormac has now raised over €100,000 for charity.

The RTE documentary, Unspoken, detailed the eating disorder crisis in Irish men and the lack of public health services opened the nation’s eyes to the issues that currently persist for the nation’s health services and the lack of resources allocated to the mental health sector. On Episode 40 I am delighted to be joined by one of the most impressive and wonderful humans I've ever met. Rachael Lee originally grew up in Australia and moved to Ireland dreaming of swimming in the olympics.

When that didn’t work out she trained as a nurse, retrained as a firefighter paramedic, and took up ocean swimming. That hobby turned into travelling the world with friends and breaking Irish and world records in relay and individual swims. She currently holds the Irish record for fastest Channel swim, male or female, beating her husbands record! All while raising two sons and working a demanding full time job. Enjoy!
