I don’t know about you, but, personally, I want to hear from people going up from the mountain instead of from people bragging about their summit. That’s why, in today’s episode, I’m hanging with my dear friend (and business leader, coach, and podcaster) Jacqueline Martinez to talk about lessons from the mountain or, to be precise, the lessons we’re learning as we climb our mountains (i.e. face the challenges of life). We cover:

  • Where we are on our own personal mountains and why we want to talk with you about them

  • Why it’s okay to take a conscious step back from doing the inner work

  • What we’re focused on right now and why we think will matters to you

  • The stronghold sadness had in my life and what I’m doing to heal it

  • Steps Jacqueline is taking to maneuver through her new life chapter and why

  • The importance of community while doing the innerwork

We’ve been sold the message that we need to “run into discomfort” to grow. But can I tell you something? That’s horse sh*t. Because, yes, we have to get uncomfortable, but we don’t always have to rub up against our trauma and live in a perpetuated state of fear to grow. There’s a different way. And spoiler: it’s learning how to stretch safely – which is what this episode is all about. So, tune in to learn how I learned this lesson and how to stretch yourself in a way that feels safe.

So here’s the deal: Most of us are letting our inner child dictate our actions as an adult. And that sucks. Because when we (unknowingly) let our little selves run the show, they don’t use the knowledge we’ve gained as an adult to make decisions, calculate risk, etc. Which is a large reason why we find ourselves repeating scenarios we don't want to.

Hence why I invited Certified Financial Recovery Counselor and Business Coach Sheryl Kosovski on the show to talk about the Inner Child. Because we have to learn how to differentiate between the voice of our inner child and our adult selves if we are to step into the person we know we’re meant to be. So, come take a listen as Sheryl and I explore:

  • What the inner child is and why it matters

  • Why the inner child “acts out” and the real reason she wants you to listen to her

  • Tell-tale signs your inner child is driving the bus

  • Exercises to develop a relationship with your inner child

  • Ways to preserve the positive parts of your inner child

  • How the inner child leads to greater authenticity and personal growth

Note: The sound quality is a little off.

Have you ever loved something but the thought of doing it for the long term brought up intense emotions? Well, that happened to me recently and we’re going to talk about it. In today’s episode, I'm a thousand percent transparent with you and share why I questioned continuing podcasting and how my inner critic made me question the impact of my words, and if it was worth my time. I also share how I got curious about my own thoughts and emotions around that question and learned to sit with them long enough to question their validity. And I lay out how my inner critic made me question the impact of my words and if it was worth my time. So let's dive in and talk about how I almost didn't record this podcast.

It’s easy to get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life that you can’t even see where you are blocked. I know this from working with my clients, but I also know this from personal experience. In fact, just recently, my coach caught my blind spot of receiving and helped me do the work to open up to receive. And, Lord, I needed that help but I had no idea until she pointed it out.

If you’re still reading this, you can probably relate – which is why I recorded this episode. Because I know many of the people I serve have trouble receiving, whether it be love, support, opportunities, or abundance. But, friend, allowing yourself to be receptive is key to becoming who you want to be as it attracts the things you want. That being said, there are a few important nuances to receiving that isn’t talked about a lot in the self-development world. And that makes it hard for many to open up to receiving. That’s why, in this episode, we explore different ways and tools to open yourself up to receive and exactly how it enhances your life. So, if you're ready to live a more abundant and prosperous life, join me on this episode of self-discovery.

Want to be more productive? Ready to feel better overall? Then, girl, you better get your body right as it’s a key tool to being successful in any endeavor. To be clear, though, “get your body right” doesn’t mean, “you better drop weight and become a size 6.” It means you’ve got to get to a place where you physically feel good day-in-and-day-out. Which I know isn’t the easier thing to do as the internet is full of lies. Hence why I brought on nutritional therapist Diane Teall Evans to talk to us today. In this episode, she explains why we can’t do Lamborghini things on an empty tank, which food myths are holding our health hostage, and how to prioritize our bodies once and for all. We also cover:

  • Practical ways to support your health for better productivity and mood

  • How to improve your diet and energy without giving up everything you love

  • The mind/body connection and why it matters when you’re going after big things in life

  • Clear indicators that your body is (or isn’t) working properly

  • Myths of the diet industry and how to overcome them

  • Where functional labs fit in, plus which labs are helpful and which are total duds

About Diane Teall Evans

Diane Teall Evans is a certified nutritional therapist and she guides women through healing their gut, so they can balance their energy, hormones, and beyond. Her approach to wellness is “edu-tainment” – educating and entertaining her community with actionable steps and information to sustainably improve their diet and lifestyle. Diane’s practice is online-based, offering 1:1 nutritional therapy services to women in the United States and beyond. She is the founder of Root Cause Reset, her signature nutritional therapy program that teaches women how to find and address the root cause of their health concerns. Diane also co-hosts Get Your Shit Together, a digestible health and fitness meet pop culture podcast. Offline you'll find her traveling, snuggling Doug her pug, and going H.A.M. in the (Costco) club.

We're often told to “be who we are”. Thing is, there is no instruction manual on how to do that. That’s why so many of us end up trying to change things about ourselves that we can’t or that we don’t need to. Because in our quest to be accepted, we forget that the things that make us different are actually our gifts.

This is why the journey to our best self isn’t one of changing everything about ourselves, but, rather, a journey of learning how to love everything about ourselves. Of course, that’s easier said than done. Which is why I recorded this episode. So, tune in as I share why it's so easy to fall into a trap of trying to change everything about ourselves and how to start loving yourself fully.

Tune in as today’s episode comes with a twist! One of my best friends, business leader Jacqueline Martinez, interviewed me to help me more easily share the path I took to become the person I am today and explain how this informs the work I do now. In this episode, we also cover:

  • The things that I struggled with when I started doing the inner work to become the person I was meant to be

  • Why the journey to the truest version of yourself is one of consistent unlearning

  • Why following your intuition feels so hard and how to move past it

  • The reasons you can’t follow someone else’s blueprint to success — even if it worked for them

  • The three steps of learning and how they work together

  • How “Scratch the Script” came to be and why I’m so passionate about it

What do you want? Like, really, what do YOU want? The truth is, most of us don’t know. Because most of us have been conditioned to want what others want for us. It’s a harsh pill to swallow at first, but once we understand this, we can finally ditch the life we thought we were supposed to have for the one we actually love. And that’s what this episode is all about.

Because in this podcast episode, I share Lesson 1 from my new group program Scratch The Script – Ask For What You Want. And, dang, it’s good. So, tune in, because in today’s episode, I spill the beans on why asking for what you want is so hard, the way your soul communicates your desires to you, and how to start accessing it now.

So many of us grew up thinking we need to get things right to be worthy of love – be it from humans or the Divine. But spoiler: that’s not how love works. And, until we understand this, we’ll suffer for much longer than we need to. Luckily, suffering is a sentence we have to endure, in this episode, spiritual mentor Karen Kenney teaches us why that’s the case and how substituting curiosity for suffering can shift how we approach this work. In this episode, Karen asks covers:

  • Why spirituality isn’t about “getting it right” and how to find practices that are right for you

  • How suffering keeps us disconnected from love and why building a relationship with God/Divine/Universe/Etc. matters

  • The 5 Ds of spirituality and why curiosity is key to enacting them

  • How our younger years prime us to become the adults we are now and what we must do to shift behaviors (should we choose

  • Why so many of us think we’re broken and why we’re actually not

  • How to move from being symptom aware to solution aware

  • Plus so much more…

Want to be the best version of yourself? Then don't try to be someone else. Which duh. But, honestly, it took me a long time to really get this concept because I couldn’t figure out how to implement the things I was learning into my life. In fact, it wasn’t my mentor Dr. David Soul explained the concept of imitation v. implementation that it all clicked and I was able to decipher where I was going “wrong” – which is why I’m using this episode to share what he taught me. So, tune in today if you want to learn the difference between integration and imitation, how to develop your own strengths based on your innate passion, and why intelligence can be both a gift and a curse.

Oftentimes, we self-sabotage when things feel too good, too easy, and too spacious. Thing is, we don’t know we’re doing that most of the time because we convince ourselves that the discomfort we feel is a call to do something different or bigger. And, well, that sucks for a bunch of reasons. This is why I asked Entrepreneur & Mindset Coach Topsie Vandenbosch to join the podcast to talk with us about why we self-sabotage, how to stop doing it, and why following your joy matters is the antidote to self-destruction. In this episode, we also cover:

  • What self-sabotage can look like and how to stop we’re doing it

  • The difference between contentment and complacency and why knowing this is critical if business success is what you’re after

  • Why boredom is better than chaos and what your boredom is telling you

  • What happens when you follow what brings you joy and what makes you happy

  • Why forgiveness is key to finding your joy and why it feels so hard to forgive yourself

  • What a Lifetime Blueprint is and why understanding this concept will shift your perspective on the day you had

It’s sometimes hard to follow the truth. After all, there are so many unknowns when we decide to buck our conditioned norms and do what our heart, head or gut tells us to do. But here’s the thing – not following our truth zaps our energy, hinders our success, and drives us crazy with discontent. That’s why, in today’s episode, I share how accepting a big truth helped me finally uncover my biggest defense mechanism and explain the tools I used to overcome it.

Finance is a key part of our lives. After all, we need money to both live and thrive in this world. Unfortunately, most women aren’t given the tools to thrive financially as financial systems weren’t made with women in mind. As a result, money is often a source of anxiety for many women.

But guess what? It doesn’t have to be that way. And in today’s episode, business and financial educator Hannah Koenig breaks down why and teaches us how to create a financial life from a place of true freedom and control by explaining:

  • Why wishing for wealth won’t work and why we’ve been duped into believing it will

  • The 3 steps of financial intimacy and how to utilize these steps in any area of your life

  • How to identify your core values and why money will be key to living them out

  • The truth about money and power and how women can reclaim both

  • What makes women great stewards of money and why we forget just how great we are

Y’all, I was mad last week. Like, real mad. And here’s why: I let myself believe that “letting go” meant being okay with boundary crossing. And, straight up, it’s not. That’s why I got so mad. Because in an effort to be “spiritual”, I shut down this truth.

Or, rather, I tried to. Which is what this episode is all about. So, tune in to learn what I had to do to stop spiritual bypassing my own anger and then what I had to do to return to an integrous state with myself.

If we want to be something (say, confident or assertive) then we have to clearly define what being that means to us – which sounds simple enough, right? Wrong. Because most of us don’t realize we’re allowed to do this and, as a result, the actions we try to take to reach our desired states of being are so untethered from the truth of who we are.

That’s why in today’s episode I explain how to start identifying with you who you say you want to be and outline how to make a plan to embody that identity. So, tune in to learn why we have such a difficult time with this and how to overcome any internal objections to it.

What if you could hear your thoughts and learn from them? Would that improve your life? Spoiler: The answer is yes. Yet so many of us keep our minds busy hoping that happy thoughts will just magically appear. But that’s not how it works. That’s why on today’s episode, I get really honest about what it takes to create a mind that defaults to the positive and why curiosity and compassion are key to fostering this kind of mindset.

And it’s high time you see that and let yourself off the hook for not being where you want to be yet. Hence this episode.

So, tune in as I’m about to help you break free from the negative thoughts we often associate with our lives when actually nothing is wrong at all!

The Full Plate returns! What I thought would be a short break turned into a few years. During that time, I opened and closed a business, had a miscarriage, had a baby, and opened a brand new business that focuses on retaining, recruiting, and promoting women in the workplace. So it’s been a wild few years. But my heart called me to bring this podcast back. And return to my roots.

I’m honored to bring my dear friend, Eliza Kingsford, to the show to talk about wellness in a way that’s not talked about (but is so essential). Eliza’s work is at the intersection of the science of nutrition and the psychology of eating. She’s the author of Brain-Powered Weight Loss and is a licensed psychotherapist.

In part one of our conversation, we discuss why nutrition is simple, but the human element is the missing piece. Eliza gets to the root of weight loss, dieting, and health in a way that will give you practical steps to take. If you’ve struggled with the question, “Why don’t I do better when I know better?” this episode will provide you with the clarity to move forward.

Additionally, Eliza and I explore:

  • What does life look like when you stop dieting.
  • Why embracing diets keeps us safe but not fulfilled.
  • Why understanding safety is the key to healthy living.

The following two episodes are for you if you're ready to get off the yo-yo diet roller-coaster, stop obsessing about food, and learn how to eat with peace, ease, and even joy.

The Full Plate Courses

3:18 - What is simple (and not simple) about nutrition

6:10 - We are doing health wrong, here’s how

12:11 - The hard work is the easy part. So why aren’t I making progress?

16:39 - What is left if you remove dieting?

22:42 - The core truth of all dieting

How do we bring more of us into the healthcare system? It’s a challenging question, and one that some healthcare providers, like today’s guest, are trying to answer.

Dr. Dan Pino is an internal medicine and pediatrics doctor at Eskenazi Health in Indianapolis. As a primary care physician, Dan is asking important questions about how the systems we live in play a role in our overall well being. Listen in as we explore:

  • What identity means within the healthcare setting
  • How the healthcare system has evolved from disease-specific to understanding the full context of a patient’s life
  • How different socioeconomic factors can affect the patient-physician relationship

Like CBD, it seems like everyone is talking about mushrooms and their superpowers. But, honestly, I didn’t know all that much about them before this episode. In fact, I had no idea there was so much to know about mushrooms! Thankfully, today’s guest enlightened me on the hundreds of species of mushrooms and their countless benefits.

Jeff Chilton is a mushroom aficionado whose fascination with the plant led him to his current role as President of Nammex, the first company to offer a certified organic line of mushroom extracts in the US supplement industry. Jeff is also a kind and brilliant soul who is here to share with us the many benefits of mushrooms -- both edible and medicinal -- and what to look for when choosing a mushroom supplement.

As Jeff makes clear in this episode, mushrooms are not a panacea, but they can play an incredible role in bringing our bodies back into homeostasis.

Listen in to learn:

  • The basic nutritional benefits of edible mushrooms
  • The difference between edible mushrooms and medicinal mushrooms
  • How medicinal mushrooms work to enhance your health and bring you back into homeostasis
  • How to start implementing mushrooms into your diet and supplement routine

Birth Control. Hormones. Menstrual Cycles. So. Many. Questions. Birth control can be a confusing topic. So many of us started on some form of it as teens or young women, without really understanding how it works and affects our bodies. This has left us out of touch with our own cycles and uniformed when it comes to our reproductive health. That’s why I’m calling on Dr. Kelly Culwell, aka Dr. Lady Doctor, to give us the information we should have been given years ago.

As an OBG/YN for almost two decades, Kelly has seen more than 28,000 vaginas on five continents. So, it’s safe to say she’s learned a lot about our lady parts. She’s also the creator of the “House Call” video series aimed at educating & empowering women to speak openly about their bodies and ask the right questions -- and that’s exactly what we’re doing today. As someone on my own hormonal journey, this has been such a fascinating conversation, and I hope you’ll find it empowering too.

Listen in as Dr. Lady Doctor herself helps us get smarter about our cycles by answering questions like:

  • How does hormonal birth control work and affect our bodies?
  • What’s the difference between hormonal and non-hormonal birth control?
  • What does a “normal” menstrual cycle look like and why is it a critical marker for our overall health?
  • Which lifestyle factors might be affecting our cycles?
  • How can we safely transition off birth control, and what should we expect in the process?
  • What’s the deal with our “fertile window” and is it a reliable form of birth control?

I hope this episode inspires you to get in touch with your own cycle and empowers you with the information you need to make informed choices for your body. You can stay in touch with Kelly on her website www.drladydoctor.com or send her questions directly on Instagram or Facebook at @drladydoctor.

And, as always, I want to hear from you too! Tag me on Instagram @ericaballardhealth and let me know what you thought of this episode!

  • Why supporting local food creates a more sustainable food and agriculture system

Friends, you’re in for a real treat this episode. I know, I say it every time, but I really love these women. Karen Burr and Sara Redmon have not only changed how I treat my skin but have also changed how so many others take care of their skin. As holistic estheticians and herb entrepreneurs, Sara and Karen spend most of their days helping people heal skin conditions – from acne to rosacea – through Materia Medica, their herbal blending bar and practice in Indiana. Before opening Materia Medica, these two spent many years working in traditional spas and decided to leave that world after realizing there was a (much) better way to care for our skin.

On this episode Karen and Sarah talk about how they incorporate natural skincare into everyday life, explaining:

  • How our skin is an indicator of what’s going on internally in our bodies and what to do to heal ourselves from the inside out
  • Why they are so adamant about nourishing our bodies with natural products and what they wish they knew when they were younger
  • What to look for when buying natural products, including make-up, lotions, and face wash
  • How to detox your arm pits (uh huh) and find a natural deodorant that actually works
  • The difference between traditional spa treatments and holistic, plant-based skin care
  • What to do if you have acne and/or want to age gracefully
  • The simple steps you can take to start incorporating natural skin care and product into your life

Karen and Sara want you to look and feel good as they remember what it was like to battle acne and other skin problems. That’s why these two make sure their clients have the how-to steps to take care of their skin. So, if you want to connect with them or just want to follow them, you can find them hanging out on Instagram and Facebook at @materiamedicablendingbar or email them at materiamedica2@gmail.com.
