In this season five bonus episode of the Manage-A-Bull Podcast, host Eric Raine interviews our usual podcast host, Patrick Lageraaen, a full-time MBA student, about his non-traditional career path in the maritime industry. Patrick shares his background working as a coatings inspector and in the yachting industry, and how he decided to pursue an MBA to further his career in the maritime industry. He discusses his experiences working on luxury yachts, the challenges and rewards of the job, and his plans to use his MBA to launch a service-oriented career in the yachting industry. Patrick also highlights the unique aspects of the industry, such as the need for emergency medical training and the high costs associated with owning and operating a yacht. He emphasizes the importance of being service-oriented and finding fulfillment in making people happy, and encourages students considering non-traditional career paths to follow their passions and not compare themselves to others.
In this episode of the Manage-A-Bull podcast, co-hosts Eric Raine and Patrick Lageraaen interview Srikrithi Krishnan, a dual degree MBA and Master of Public Health student at the University at Buffalo School of Management. Our next feature is your Master of Science in accounting faculty director, Professor Rose Hu. This three-part series will help you get to know Professor Hu in a more personal light. Learn why Professor Hu transitioned out of the corporate accounting world into academia, what qualities and characteristics our MSA students have, and the connections and support MSA students can receive from Professor Hu and the rest of the Accounting and Law faculty.
Malcolm Ertha simultaneously and successfully manages being Chief of Staff of The City of Buffalo Common Council, a full-time student in UB’s Executive MBA program, and a Sergeant in the US Army Reserves. He credits his military experience as giving him an edge in decision-making, teamwork, and leadership—skills he has identified as critical for success in his current high-profile position and in a demanding academic program.
Ertha also relies on his military training to help him navigate the academic world after a ten-year hiatus from the classroom. “You’re going to get pulled into a lot of different directions,” he said, “And for me, it was particularly a challenge because it was so long since I was last in school. It’s about getting back into that battle rhythm…Challenging military courses, training exercises, deployments—these are things that really prepare you well to handle anything that comes with UB.”
Briar Baker’s path from aspiring teacher to management consultant at Accenture, one of the world’s largest and most respected consulting firms, is unconventional. And fascinating. Along the way, Baker earned a BS in Social Studies Education from Buffalo State College, was an Aircraft Structural Repairer in the New York Army National Guard, earned a M.Ed. from Canisius College, taught social studies in the Buffalo Public Schools, and earned his MBA at the University at Buffalo.
