Steve and Trace talk about the Grant Award made to Access by the One Family Foundation. Access has secured £5,000 to invest in new IT equipment that will be used by students and job seekers taking part in a training project, after winning a national award.
Our Access Community Training Project was awarded the funding by financial mutual, OneFamily, through its Foundation Community Awards. The annual awards provide game-changing opportunities for community organisations, groups and projects across the UK.
As well as our radio work Access provides training for students looking for work experience and people seeking jobs. The organisation aims to boost local residents’ chances of employment by teaching them valuable work-based skills.
Trainers currently work with a number of local people from a range of age groups, helping them to develop vital skills in IT, administration and finance.
We will use the funding to update our computers and buy new tablets and smartphones to extend the range of training areas that we provide. Our charity was one of 41 organisations presented with an award in the latest round.
Steven said: “As a small charity, this funding will have a huge impact on the services we’re able to provide and we’d like to thank everyone across the community who voted for us.
“Many people in our area struggle to find employment, and the new kit we’ve been able to buy will help them to build completely new skills that will be useful in everyday life as well as in work.
“Over the last three years, a high proportion of our trainees have gone on to find jobs, or even start their own businesses after sessions with us. We can’t wait to help even more people across the area.”
Karl Elliott, marketing director at OneFamily, said: “Lots of local people have already benefited from the training provided by the Access Community Training Project, and I’m sure this new backing will help the charity go from strength-to-strength.
“Our Community Awards go right to the heart of what being part of a mutual society is all about, directly benefitting our customers and the causes closest to their hearts.
“Our next round of Community Awards is set to launch in autumn and we’d encourage our Staffordshire-based customers to get involved and nominate a cause that’s important to them.”
Through its Foundation, OneFamily redistributes a proportion of its profits back to its customers, to help them to help their families, their communities and those they care about most. In 2016, an estimated 100,000 people directly benefitted from the Foundation Community Awards.
Over a period of five years, OneFamily aspires to make £5 million available through its Foundation, helping to improve the lives of its customers, their families and communities.

Peter Field talks to veteran Punk band 'Destination Venus' about their marathon stint in the music scene. The band talk more about their fundraising efforts in the programme.
We've a packed line up of programmes over the weekend so you can make us the soundtrack to your Christmas. The schedule includes So This Is Christmas a one hour special from our Word on Health’s Paul Pennington. Featuring some great music, comedy from the Britain’s Got Satire team, some great hints and tips to make Christmas festivities run smoothly!
There’s seasonal dance music too, and a half hour mix put together by DJ Peter Ould featuring some party versions of classic Christmas carols songs. Plus there’s another chance to hear the Stoke Art Map documentary looking how artists have helped to regenerate a small northern town and what the rest of the UK can learn from it.
Plus (as you may have seen elsewhere on this site) we have our Christmas drama, The Big Night for you too! bringing a light-hearted but thought provoking take on the nativity story. (Find out more about that here.)
Steve and Trace also bring a seasonal flavour to their regular weekend shows. Both shows feature the Big Night Christmas Drama and Steve’s show also features interviews with Operation Christmas Child about their amazing shoebox appeal. There’s also some frank Christmas journalism from 9 year old reporter Bethany.
Tracey Taylor’s show will feature a festive Themed Triple Play and a Christmas Quiz. And at a time of year which is particularly important in the calendar of the Christian faith, Trace will be talking to Las and Arlene Ratnayake from Prayer4UKToday who share their compelling stories.
Finally, at the end of the day there is a Christmas themed Altern8 with Peter Field. It features an array of Alternative Christmas songs and punk band Destination Venus who talk about their festive single I Just Can’t Wait for Christmas which is supporting cancer charity Douglas Macmillan.

You might remember our Easter drama, Centurion of The Cross written by David Piper? Well, Dave changed jobs earlier this year and so used the time between employers to produce something with a Festive feel for Access and other stations around the UK. We're not going to say too much about it now (apart from what's in the trailer above) but what we can say is that it involves a light-hearted look at the Christmas story, featuring shepherds, wise men and a particularly unusual 'choir of angels'. It's also somewhat of a unique production, having been put together from a variety of voices many miles apart using the magic of technology to make it all work!

As you may be aware one of our specialist music shows, the "Standout Show" took an unexpected break from the airwaves earlier in the year. This Easter Access presents a dramatic account of the Easter Story, Centurion of the Watch. Written and performed by UCB's David Piper, it recalls the thought provoking and moving story through the eyes of a soldier, officiating at the crucifixion.
Interspersed with some inspiring Easter themed music, the soldier gives his own account of the rise and apparent fall of Jesus of Nazareth, recalling the impact he made on many lives including his own.
