Presented by Jonny Walker and Jo Castro, from OtherWise Education. The Other Podcast is the home of irreverent talk about the life of the teacher through the times of COVID.
In this episode, Jo and Jonny talk about the importance of establishing the right culture of relationships in our classrooms.
As teachers, we are 'in loco parentis' but our primary role is as an educator of groups of children - how can we reconcile being a figure of trust and attachment, with being a figure of authority? We explore the brilliant work of the Relational Schools Foundation, and its director, Dr Rob Loe. Jo asks questions to Jonny about one of his past pupils, unpicking the story of how relationships develop across a school year. Jo shares insights about the powerful impact of acknowledging and talking about strengths in the classroom.
We share six tips for you in your classroom, which will help you to strengthen the relational culture.

In this episode, Jo and Jonny talk about listening. What kind of listening is typical in our classrooms, and what benefits can be gained from learning different 'levels of listening'? This links to session two of our Connected Teacher Project,.
In this episode, Jo and Jonny talk about reflection. Why is it important for teachers to step back from what they do in the classroom, and reflect? We chat about a model called Critical Incident Analysis, and share some books written by teachers about the life of the classroom.
As we get ready to go back to school, or something that resembles it in COVID times, we chat about what 'Back to School' means to us, Jo's risqué anxiety dreams and Jonny's strange theory about bus nudity. We share tips on what not to do when we are starting a new year with the class.
Jo and Jonny welcome you to our new OtherWise Education podcast. The Other Podcast is the corner of the school staffroom you want to be in - with a whisper and a snort, we juggle the joys, triumphs, stresses and rages that make up life in our education system.
