The podcast releases on Tuesdays and Thursdays and average between 10 and 15 minutes each. Why is everyone talking about "going back" to in-person meetings? We're not going back! This is physically not an option. In this podcast episode, I discuss how thinking about "going back" to something is the completely wrong mindset to have and how we as a society need to recognize that things are not what they once were. Better yet, how a comical Facebook comment centered around someone being bitter that their University didn't cancel finals in December 1989 due to a snowstorm inspired this post.

We all recognize that there are hundreds of different career paths within the "Event Industry". Even within one sector - such as Association Planner - there are so many sub-specialties (such as medical) that have their own unique training and certifications. The real question is - why does everyone assume that all faculty are the same? Spoiler alert: we're not all the same! Whether its research, teaching, extension, service, or some unique combination of all of them - faculty are all different both in their job descriptions and within their teaching styles. When I have been asked to speak to meeting professional groups about how to get into part time teaching or transitioning into academia - this is the first conversation I have!

People so often focus on the paycheck. They make career decisions based on the paycheck. They make career decisions based on the perceived security. I challenge here that if you are not passionate about your career - your starting salary and perceived job security are pointless. You will not only be miserable, but you will also stagnate and not advance in your chosen career. I suggest following your passion area.....even if it has a lower starting salary you will quickly advance and rise to the top as your passion will show through everything that you do. I don't fail students - they don't do the work and they fail themselves. While a simple concept, this can easily be confused and just thought of that the "teacher doesn't like me and failed me". In reality I just assign the grade in the gradebook. Once of the most interesting things in my courses because of my grading structure is that students realize their own lack of effort and take full responsibility for it. Many of these students have often gone on to become some of my best mentees and lifelong friends. Enter: Alex Morehead.

I often say that events are everything. Events are marketing, project management, design, business, communications, neuroscience, and so much more. Today we will be talking about how events and hospitality are transferable skills for crisis management. As COVID ramped up throughout 2020, crisis management contractors needed more staff. They looked for those with meeting and event planning backgrounds who were already tried and tested as professionals who could handle pressure, think quickly on their feet, and effectively manage rapidly changing logistics smoothly. As some event planners, and many hoteliers, were separated or furloughed from their full time positions, this became an easy transition where many of the skills were naturally transferable between industries. In today's industry spotlight, Jordan shares with us his background in meetings and events as a hotelier and his experience transferring into the field of crisis management during these unprecedented times!

While most venues are doing an amazing job of this - attendee confidence in events are low and a large percentage of this is due to concern over other people's safety and security and perceived cleanliness. What is the different between actual and perceived cleanliness and how can you impact both? This episode shares several examples that you can implement tomorrow!
Dr. K also shares some forward thinking ideas of ways we can return back to in-person meetings with an exhibit floor type design where attendees can customize their space to what they want and pay for that personalization. Storytelling is all the rage, as is narrative design, online experiences, the desire for travel and tourism, and all things immersion. Frances Vieras Blanc is a one stop designer with the background of champions doing utterly incredible things. I sat down with her to pick her brain about her pivot from in-person immersion experiences to virtual immersion tourism experiences. The vast majority of event companies do not know how to accurately state if their event was a "success" or not and how to define what success actually means for them. This is because they do not have well defined objectives that they are measuring against. Objectives, and more specifically SMART objectives, are not a new concept and are used across a variety of industries and in both personal and business situations.
This episode discusses how terms are often used incorrectly or interchangeably and how to accurately define SMART objectives for your event. Examples are given from events we have worked on before and tips and tricks are shared as you think about whether you actually have SMART objectives for your event or not. For many years, the industry said that incoming employees and college students needed more "soft skills". Now, we have been recognizing that this is shifting to needing more "empathy". Empathy is an Emotional Intelligence competency that is critical in events and design, but is also essential in almost every other industry. Would you say you are an empath? This episode features Lillian Nguyen, a graduate student at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Whereas most of our student features are student-created podcasts, this is a special interview-style episode.
In addition to sharing her behind the scenes experience in the Intro to Events class, Lillian shares her experience of being an Asian American university student in the era of COVID-19. Lillian shares about discrimination she has faced this year because of her skin color and how the events class community bonded together over her story and learned empathy through the process. This story is worth highlighting and sharing as hundreds of thousands of students return to campuses over the next few weeks.
Lillian discusses how she made the transition from graduating in biological sciences to now studying event management. More than any other episode, this one gives you a much closer look behind the scenes of how our formal for-credit class is structured and what you could experience if you were enrolled in the class live and in person.

In the Global Future of Jobs report - creativity moved up from the number ten most important job skill in 2015 to number three in 2020. This episode discusses how we don't just have the ability to be creative - that we are all creative already.
As event professionals of all levels, we recognize that there are very fine lines between recognizing that we don't have to recreate the wheel and innovating from year to year to a level our attendees will not get whiplash in our events.
Creativity is more than just staring at a blank piece of paper and coming up with something new. Its thinking of existing problems in a new light - working within boundaries (such as budget or space) and designing new experiences to solve real life issues.

There are a million moving parts when it comes to designing and producing an event. As event professionals, it is natural for us to want to absorb everything all at once so that we can jump in and start designing. I am often asked where to start this process and my answer is always the same. Identify your why.
I always write WHY on the top of my notebooks. Why am I doing this? Why are we having this event? Why are we meeting? Keeping the focus on the why is critical for a successful event and helps to guide the evaluation metrics to identify if your event was a success or not.
