New information about that terrible day in history, and a look back at what it's been like reporting on 9/11.
October 10, 2001, exactly 22 years ago today...
This was the day that we awarded the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund a check for all of the money collected by the kids in Kix Country with our Quest for a Million Pennies.
It was also only a month after the 9/11 attacks, so you'll hear news-of-the-day related to that, as well as Bubba Hawkins, Mike Miller's awesome sense of humor, mentions of the songs we were playing and some background on how ice hockey got started in Savannah, GA.
Enjoy the flashback in time...or history lesson, if you weren't alive in 2001!
Over the course of my 25 year radio career, I've saved a lot of aircheck tapes. On Radio Rewind, those tapes are converted to digital and brought to you again, or for the first time. My favorite tapes are those with the very funny Mike Miller and/or the ones with cool interviews. Keep your ears open for some big names, too.
Radio stations where I've worked include: 90.5 WCVH-FM, B106 Columbia, SC, Magik 105.9 Brunswick, GA, KIX 96 Savannah, 106.9 Savannah (too many name changes to mention, lol), 107.9 The Coast, NewsRadio WTKS Savannah, 98.7 The River Savannah.
From around 2000 - The Kid 96 Waking Crew -Mike Miller, Laura Anderson and Spencer Black expose the amount of money being spent a new trash cans by the City of Savannah.
As Disney+ premieres the Broadway musical Hamilton today, we flash back to my 2018 interview with the wonderful Hamilton and Wonder actor Daveed Diggs...and the thoughtful questions I asked him came from 5th-graders!
Mike and Laura (Me) in the Morning, a day or two before Christmas, 2003 - 'Santa' came to visit us in the studio and we had a jolly 'ole time with him! This includes one of mine and Mike's favorite calls, which we had recorded and often played during the show: "I really don't have time to kid around with you people".
Andrew Ridgeley, WHAM! and Me - Me in my Swatch Watch sweatshirt and baggy Pasta pants listening to WHAM! in the 80's, while looking at a photo of Andrew Ridgeley, equaled heaven. Now he's released a memoir about the WHAM! days and in this podcast I review the book, as well as reminisce. Oh yeah, if you've ever wanted to know why WHAM! chose the "CHOOSE LIFE" shirts for the "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" video, then read the book. I find it very relatable for the time.
In all fairness, Penguin Random House sent me a copy of the book, only because I couldn't get an interview with Andrew. I would've bought the book anyway, of course!
You may not know everything about September 11th, 2011, such as what happened to the FBI agent who most wanted to capture Osama Bin Laden before that tragic day... Also, the reunion 15 years later of a victim of the attack at the Pentagon and one of the people saved his life... And what it was like being on the radio that day and afterwards.
Retired FBI agent Demery Bishop wrote: Your 9-11 podcast was excellent. And you were correct, as it was you who I first heard report the incidents as I was parking my car and headed I. To my CrimeStoppers office. It was that report that had me calling FBIHQ minutes after I heard your voice and story and was. Volunteering to assist in the investigation in any way I could help, gratis, just a sense of duty to our country."
