This is generally an engineering podcast that often pertains to the world of mining, and especially mining waste management, or whatever else captures my imagination. The episodes, thankfully, will be fairly brief.

Rens is a Technical Fellow with WSP and a geochemist with more than 30 years of experience in the mining industry.

Timothy D. Stark is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with an expertise in Geotechnical Engineering. Dr. Stark has been conducting interdisciplinary research and teaching on the static and seismic stability of natural and manmade slopes, such as dams, levees, floodwalls, and waste containment facilities, railroad geotechnics, geosynthetics and geomembranes, soil liquefaction during earthquakes, and stabilization and behavior of dredged material containment areas.

Juan and I discuss his recent research with a CPT calibration chamber and the use of the NorSand model for tailings. As Juan says in his LinkedIn profile: "This work presents novel CPT testing in a calibration chamber of mostly contractive silty tailings, the characterization within the critical state mechanics framework using NorSand, and the comparison of the laboratory data with spherical cavity expansion simulation results using CPTwidget. From this comparison exercise with Gold and Platinum tailings, a rescaling equation is proposed to improve the fit between the simulation results and the laboratory data. He has a history of achievement from his years with Canaccord Capital. In August 2008, he retired from Canaccord Capital as an investment advisor to apply his experience and contacts to the public company sector. He has successfully assembled multiple world-class companies strengthened by strong management teams and multiple discoveries. Jonathan first found his interest in the precious metals industry through his Canadian upbringing. He began investing in the Canadian precious metals market and later got lucky in an oil and gas transaction. He has since parlayed knowledge, persistence, luck and surrounding himself with top talent in the mining industry and continues to grow his success.

Justin is the founder of Carbon Streaming ($NETZ), which provides investors a way to invest in a low carbon future and fight climate change. They offer exposure to carbon credits, a key instrument used by governments and corporations to achieve their climate goals. Many of us who want to grow their money responsibly stick their money to no-load mutual funds and leave it there for a long period of time. Even though it’s almost impossible to beat the market, Justin points out that a lot of the bad things that are happening on the planet right now – habitat destruction, pollution, climate instability, oceanic dead zones, massive poverty and income inequality – all funded in part or wholly by those very mutual funds. Also, Justin has twenty years of royalty and stream financing. He was formerly President of Cobalt 27 Capital Corp, which raised over $1 billion in equity and debt prior to its sale to Pala Investments Limited in 2019.
Frederick Bell is CEO of Elemental Royalties – a gold focused royalty company whose goal remains to secure royalties over advanced assets from potential royalty acquisitions worldwide.
In 2018, Frederick received the prestigious Young Rising Star Award at Mines & Money 2018. Numbers wise, Elemental Royalties listed on the TSX-V during July 2020 after raising C$24M following three years as a private royalty company. In 2020 Elemental Royalties also increased annual revenue by 112%!
David is a legend in the mining world. Prior to his current role, he has worked in various leadership capacities in the natural resources sector over the last 30 years. He served most recently as President and Chief Executive Officer of Goldcorp Inc. until its sale to Newmont Corporation in April 2019. Prior to joining Goldcorp, he served as President, Chief Executive Officer and a director of Hudbay Minerals Inc. from 2010 to 2015, where he presided over that company's emergence as a leading metals producer. Previous to this, he held various senior executive positions with mining companies, including Senior Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer of Agnico-Eagle Limited from 1998 to 2010 and as treasurer and other various finance roles with Inmet Mining Corporation from 1990 to 1998.

This trend needs to be reversed to assure the sustainability of tailings dam operations and to maintain the social license to operate them. One way forward is the implementation of the Performance Based, Risk Informed Safe Design, Construction, Operation and Closure (PBRISD) framework as outlined in the 6th de Mello Lecture. This article proposes that implementation of PBRISD is feasible through Safety Management Systems (including Dam Safety Programs, Risk Management Plans, OMS manuals, etc.) as outlined in guidelines and regulations and lays a conceptual way forward for implementation. However, the authors identify that the big challenges for effective implementation of PBRISD are safety culture and risk communication. Addressing these challenges is therefore imperative for stopping the current trend of tailings storage facility failures. The authors hope that properly trained practitioners, from decision makers to front line workers, with clear understanding of the operation’s risks and their personal responsibilities, accountability and liability would promote safer practices and conditions for tailings storage.
