In this episode, Dr. Cohn answers a question from a reader about How New Golfers Can Improve Learning.

KATHY: Learning golf as a middle-aged adult is totally different than learning when younger. It's like learning a foreign language as an adult versus as a child. It’s harder to just let things happen and play with abandon. It’s hard to not over think constantly. How can you help newer golfers with this?

JACKIE: I walked off the course today after 13 holes, not because I was injured or even playing that badly. I walked off in disgust and frustration… I’m frustrated that when I’m putting well, I’m driving the ball poorly. When I’m chipping well, my irons go limp. I can’t put together a solid round. In this episode, Dr. Cohn answers a question from a reader about why golfers get the putting yips when they think it's important to make putts. Here's the question of the week:

PAUL: I’m a 10-12 handicap, 54 years old, play about twice a week, and I have the putting yips but, I don’t think it is about fear of embarrassment. Instead, it is about being seen as good by winning the match. The longer I wait my turn to putt, the worse it gets. When I don’t care about the putt—I’m out of the hole, then I have no issues. Only when it matters does the yips kick in.

Most recently in my club championship, I went up 3 after 6 against my arch rival and started thinking, 'I've got him! I'm good enough,' and BAM! Again I lost my focus; I rolled off 3 bogeys in a row. "I've been golfing for 50 years and I never felt comfortable with my wedge game. But after a lesson, my confidence boomed. I now have three things to think about, one on the back swing and two on the down swing. But recently I attended a golf seminar about simply picking a target and not having any swing thoughts. My questions is what if i was to just think about the target when hitting a wedge? What kind of a swing would that produce? Would it be my wedge swing Ive had for 50 years or the new swing I've only practiced for six months. I feel like I need to have all three of these points in my mind to make the move but I cant do that and think of a target as well. I'd be very interested in your thoughts..."

In this week's golf psychology session, mental game of golf expert and author of The Mental Game of Golf, Dr. Cohn, responds to a question from a golfer who had this to say about his game:

I'm frozen. I had the putting yips in the past but that went away when I switched to left handed putting, it's my best stroke today.
