Have you been through an affair, or struggle with healing a shattered or disconnected relationship?
Each week we will share our 3 different perspectives on topics dealing with relationships, recovery, betrayal & addiction leaving you with HOPE for change no matter your circumstance.
Caller Question: "I am in the process of filing for divorce. I feel it was the right decision, however now that Have been out of the situation that caused a nervous system overload, and as the hurt caused is starting to fade, I am more clearly able to see my role/issues/shortcomings I played a role in in the marriage (critical, expecting him to live up to my husband “manual”, layering shame on top of his already existing shame) the list goes on … this is leaving me with conflicting feelings… and it hurts. It isn’t fun to see that I guess my question is how do I sort through the feelings of the divorce being what I needed to do and feeling like … I could have done much better at ex//(Not layering on the shame whenever he made a mistake/speaking my truth calmly when triggered )… the feeling is maybe there is more I could have done? I am feeling a responsibility for the situation too where I hadn’t really before…. Kind of a messy, unorganized question, but these are my thoughts. Thanks for your time!"

Caller Question: " In sex addiction, can you and your partner's attachment style be mislabeled? I have several women that I know that think they are "avoidant" because they are rejecting their husband's external validation seeking through sex. Is addiction usually avoidant attachment?"

Caller Question: "My husband just got back from your Rising Son conference and it’s feeling like he’s changing and becoming the man I’ve always known he could become. The problem is now that he’s taking his place in our family I am losing my place as the strong steady lead of our family. I honestly don’t know where I fit. So my question is 2 fold, 1: As he embraces his masculinity how do I embrace my femininity? I don’t even know what that means. 2: Does one weekend of spiritual awakening just erase 11 years of pornography addiction. I terrible that I can’t move on like he is."

Caller: Hi! Betrayed partner here (porn addiction). I'm a new listener & I just listened to E58-is it ok to be attracted to more than 1 person. I have to say that coming from the betrayed partner's perspective, what was said & talking about the "3 second rule" is terrifying! For a lot of us, our partners could only have sex with us BECAUSE they had an image of someone else in their mind OR it was someone that he saw that made him want to have sex with his partner ONLY because she's the only physical option at the time &\or didn't have the opportunity to go masturbate at the time. So after seeing an attractive woman, even if it's hours later, we're wondering if it's REALLY me he wants to be with or is he just fantasizing about her. & if we don't have sex, we're thinking it's because, after seeing her, he just isn't aroused with "settling" for me! It's a huge double edged sword for some of us. How in the world are we supposed to get past that?

I don't feel like i have a really clear question to ask, i've just been in limbo for 3 years. Knowing God will bring me and my spouse back together and it happening feel like two alien forces working against eachother. As my counselor says, "i am the only one who can determine how long I can live this way." After 3 years of separation, i would say he is still doing things for recovery, but he doesn’t know why he’s not safe, why I don’t trust him, and I’m not convinced he believes he needs “recovery.” He had 3 affairs, 20+ years, does Bible study, has accountability partner I don’t think is helping, has counselors that seem to think I need to forgive him, and he says if he moves into the house he would be able to be emotionally intimate. I completely agree with your comments about him never trusting me, and I don’t think he can trust me yet. I do wonder if I should take the leap, trust God, let him move in, trust he will move towards me, etc? I believe in a God of miracles, but He also blessed me with a brain and values me as His child, He wants me to be in a relationship where I am cherished and loved. I am patient, obviously, and I’m one of those that doesn’t want to pull the trigger, but I want to honor God and where He wants me. Am I crazy?

"I loved the Podcast I listened to on Boundaries. So much great info, tools and principles discussed. I appreciated the podcast because of the difficulty I had with a group my wife got involved in that did a lot of the things you talked about and then some. I'm willing to bet they've destroyed more families that they have actually helped. They broke so much of my own trust and actually caused me a lot of trauma. I had to do multiple therapy sessions of EMDR to get over that. My wife (soon to be ex) is stuck in her victimhood and refuses to move on. It took me a long time to realize that my wife was the last bad habit I had to kick to get into Recovery. I have found new love and have the connection I have always wanted using the tools and principles I have found here.
My question is along the lines of my wife retaining her victim status and not moving forward, especially due to the women’s group she is with. Because of that I have been cut off from my son. I have seen or talked to him in 3 months now. I’m trying to go through the legal system and enforce my parental rights but it takes so long and my child is almost 18. So perhaps my question is how do you deal and go through the process of parental alienation? I have literally had to grieve the loss of my son due to my wife’s inability to cope with her emotions and continue to emotionally abuse and manipulate my child."

Caller Question: "Does society manufacture Lust addicts through shame? i'm seeing more in myself and my fellows in SAL how damaging shame is to recovery. this mentality of "I'm a sexaholic, an addict" whilst i personally feel necessary in the start of recovery, is causing a lot of shame-train and relapse. I see shame still being this huge driving force that is impeding my growth. i'd love to discuss with you guys your thoughts on if Lust actually is the problem, or if it's this pressure that we have put on ourselves due to our morals, shame on not living them, and if there's a self-fulfilling cycle out there that society at large provides me that fuels this train. it makes me curious if there's a better method than the "I'm a sexaholic" deal"

Caller Question: "How can I be a Sex Addict and a Sexual Anorexic? In a recent podcast about increasing sex drive, sexual anorexia was mentioned, and I looked into it. As a sex addict it seems confusing that I would also be a sexual anorexic, but the criteria seems to fit. My wife and I were physical while dating, but as soon as we got married the desire for sexual intimacy disappeared. The pornography addiction remained, but despite my wife's desire for sex, I struggled to be intimate with her. I assumed it was the addiction, but 3 years of recovery has not increased the sexual desire for my wife. Is it Sexual Anorexia? Intimacy Anorexia? Or something else entirely?"

Lucy Mitchell, daughter to Coby shares her story about creating spike to use as a character who puts thoughts in her head that aren't hers and actions that don't represent who she really is.
Spike has four methods of trying to keep us from being our true and #authentic selves.
TEMPT US: This is when thoughts of losing #patience, lashing out, making decisions that do not reflect who we really are, and become actions that cause damage to ourselves and our #relationships.
SHAME US: Thoughts like "I'm not good #enough", or "They will never forgive me", or "I'm so stupid because of what I did." As humans, we don't come wired to think these thoughts but by living life the Spike Narrative does come and these #destructive thoughts are not us.
MOUNTAINS OUT OF MOLEHILLS: When something goes wrong and all of a sudden it's doomsday and we've lost all hope or thoughts of catastrophe flow one after another.
MINIMIZE, RATIONALIZE AND JUSTIFY: This is when lashing out becomes ok. This is when thoughts of hurting #relationships are rationalized or justified. This is when thoughts of NOT being one's self are "ok".
The best way to know these is to spend a few moments each day thinking about how these thoughts showed up.

My guest today is my friend Amanda. She is a mom to four kids living in Northern Utah. She's been on a journey of healing and expanding and evolving for the last 3 years. She loves to be outside in any capacity, traveling, dancing and other ridiculousness, and is learning to lean into things that scare her or make her uncomfortable. Like being on this podcast. She is not an expert but has found so much healing in mindfulness and mediation and crystals.
Amanda was in one of my groups and then won a ticket to a dance party and I invited her to my house to get ready before. It was one of the scariest things she had ever done showing up by herself that night but she will never regret it! So so happy and grateful we became friends!

When anxiety and then overwhelming feelings hit in a very abrupt and sudden way, Coby faces the reality of his emotions in an effort to find out what is really behind the anger he feels. He used the following steps to work through this emotional upheaval.
Recognized his body saying something was off by manifesting #anxiety.
Identified the #overwhelming #emotions without #judging them.
Changed the #music to a #playlist that would help him #calm down.
Recognized his #projecting #anger on another driver on the road as his own #emotional #overload and realized there was more going on inwardly.
Listed the current situations (situational #triggers) that were going on in life and what #emotions each one evoked.
This process allowed Coby to #connect with himself and process in a way that gave him insights into what his body was saying. This allowed him to not take #emotions out on anyone but to be #calm when returning home to his girls.

Situations that lead to intense #emotions, which in turn create #behavior that is unwanted. That is a situational #trigger and they are real in everyday life. Here are a few takeaways from the episode.
There are 2 types of situational triggers:
Within those are 2 variations:
HOW DO WE IDENTIFY THEM?
WHAT DO WE DO ONCE WE IDENTIFY THEM?
HOW DO I USE THIS CONCEPT EACH DAY?

Knowing yourself enough to the extent of seeing the same frustrating and maddening situations come ahead of time and then still losing your cool is nuts. It is also common. Why does this happen? What can be done to prevent it? That is what this episode is about.
#Emotions that trigger #behavior we don't want are so so common in every human but how do we experience them without getting so upset?

"How can I determine whether it's scrupulosity or if I am in denial again? A few years ago, I was diagnosed with scrupulosity. During my upbringing, my understanding of religion became very strict, and I acquired the perception that I needed to be perfect in order to be worthy and loved in the sight of God. I was led to believe that if I felt certain feelings that I was sinning. These feelings of worthlessness were coped with sexual misbehaviors. Throughout my youth, I began be very obsessive about confessing my sins to my church leaders. I literally saw repentance as confession, and yet I couldn't figure out why I still felt unworthy no matter how much I would confess, so I assumed I wasn't specific enough, that I didn't cover enough, and that I never did enough to be forgiven by God. My addiction progressed into my marriage as well as my obsessive confessions but to my wife, yet there were obvious patterns of denial as well. I struggle to know the difference within me."

Being ready to face life each day is not complex but our brains resist new activities because it is not a #routine and our brains operate best on cruise control. So how do we establish #dailyhabits that foster physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual balance so we can show up our best selves when life goes sideways? This episode is about sharing best practices for establishing dailies.
#Workout: 30 minutes
#Spiritual Devotional: 10 minutes
#Journal Daily Emotions by Role in Life: 5 minutes
Share emotions with your safe person: read your list of emotions
Things to keep in mind about dailies:
-Do what you enjoy so it is #sustainable
-Take the path of least resistance
-Use your tech to establish #reminders
-Plan ahead by reviewing when #dailies are scheduled each night for the next day

Caller Question: "Masturbation. Ive heard both of your episodes on it. As well as one from sex for saints podcast. I dont deny theres a change in the church about masturbation and love the new movement you're a part of to speak up. Im hopping aboard to speak up publicly about how I'm a recovering sexaholic, working the SAL program, etc. So far from what you guys have spoken about in regards to masturbation, i agree to a degree. But I was hoping you could help answer my question: I'm curious if you could speak more to how lust plays a part in masturbation. From my own experiences it definitely has played a central role. And as a married man i dont know if i can masturbate without lusting to a degree that would ruin my recovery/slippery slope and scratch the itch/ relieve sexual tension/ etc. But for my kids. Teaching them. I agree a lot with what you've said, but i know that masturbation is a dangerous gateway into lust addiction." We hope you found something meaningful in this episode. Acting out sexually was Coby's way of dealing with stress but having sex with his wife Ashlynn didn't yield the same result. Sex with Ashlynn was a disconnecting and selfish act for Coby because he had no idea what his own sexuality was about, let alone what sex with his partner was. Q&A
What do you do when you don’t feel like you want to emotionally connect and be vulnerable with you spouse?
From my husband- As I’m working on my sex addiction recovery, I am also experiencing outbursts of anger. Can the anger issues be resolved by the work in my addiction recovery?
What are all your thoughts on the saying "sobriety is not recovery"?
I am in a 3 year relationship and I don't feel physically attracted to my partner, I've used porn for 6-8 years and have been sober for 2 years with 1 relapse early on in the 2 years, I find it tempting to look at attractive women on the street. I find it hard to give genuine compliments about my partner and their physical appearance. Every time I try to, I ask myself internally and try to confirm about whether what I whether I find something physical/otherwise about them attractive and I never feel that I can say anything nice about them. Every time I don't give a compliment, they feel worthless and inadequate and this makes me feel anxious. How can I work on this and give genuine compliments?
Okay, so I think my husband is sitting in "victim mode." He's mopey a lot of the time and he's blaming me for his short comings. When he walks into the room I'm in, he looks at me and starts to cry. I'm a super codependent person...and I'm trying super hard not to spiral down into depressions like I've done in the past. What can I do while he is in this mode?
I have been on the path of recovery for almost three years after living with an addiction for over 40 years. I am currently living in Cambodia and the resources here for recovery are limited. Your podcasts help to provide a ray of hope for restoration of my marriage. I understand the need to have regular counseling sessions to work on areas in my life. That presents a bit of a challenge here. I wonder if you could recommend a counselor that might be available for video conferences.
We are in an area where resources such as groups are scarce and our finances are too. What is some basic recovery work we can access without having to put out thousands of dollars? Maybe a basic recovery plan resource?
My husband disclosed his affair over a year ago, but last year on Valentine’s Day he wrote a love letter/text to his affair partner. I found it, and that did not go over well. He tried to sell it as a “goodbye letter”. Valentine’s Day is coming up, and I’m kind of dreading it. How do you navigate hard days that triggering? When we’ve talked about the letter in the past he tells me “that that’s how he felt and there is that part of him that exists. He doesn’t need to feed it but it’s still there.” That doesn’t ever sit well with me. Can you explain the acceptance aspect of feeling for someone else? Or what goes on when that connection exists and doesn’t just disappear?
In what ways is your Shattered to Thriving program different and similar to a 12 step program?
I don’t want this in my life and have been doing really well in my recovery the last several months but I feel lately that what my wife says or does can trigger me back to addictive behaviors.
How do I strengthen my recovery to a point where what my wife is doing or saying doesn’t affect my recovery?
I’m struggling to attend church because I feel so disconnected and isolated and some of the discussions are difficult because of people not understanding what we are going through and when people ask me how I’m doing I don’t know how to answer appropriately and I either over share or avoid but it’s all uncomfortable. Any tips for navigating this area of my life while I heal? I really don’t even want to go
What is the BEST WAY for the BETRAYED to disclose a discovery of betrayal without coming across as accusatory, pushing the addict into defense/denial? What’s the best way to get an honest disclosure from them about a discovery?
Individual and couples therapy is often discussed right out of the gate but what about group therapy? What is group accountability and can that be helpful? Can Psych-Ed help? Listen as these various types are discussed and what their potential roles could be.
Education is power and that power can be found by learning about Betrayal Trauma while recovering from addiction. Understanding what it is can help during intense moments when the partner is triggered and goes into trauma. Listen to Coby's experience as he learned to identify when Ashlylnn was triggered and what he did to deal with it.
How does it work? How can it be a thing to feel pain when the partner is also in pain from a life event, even outside of betrayal and addiction? Is a partner warranted in suffering when they have hurt their partner? What does this delicate situation look like when approached the right way? Listen as Coby and Brannon break this down.
In this episode, the flow goes to self-evaluation and knowing when to stop, take a breath and perhaps even take a break. "Don't should on yourself" is a phrase Brannon uses a lot and we will see how that can manifest inside each of us and what we can do about it. Coby and Ashlynn each share their own experience with this concept. Listen to see how.

What are the markers of addiction? What are some indicators of the behaviors of addiction that I may have? This is a recreation and update of Episode #1 that was done 3 years ago. Coby and Brannon both discuss the ins and outs of addiction in this episode.
This episode will be about making small changes named, shifts. When done properly, shifts can be the bedrock of change. Shifts are small and easy and done in a sustainable way. What could that look like for you? Listen.
In part 5 of this series on indicators of real recovery Brannon, Ashlynn and Coby discuss consistent actions and behaviors. Listen in as they share their experience from days when consistency never showed up for them in either action or behavior. Then they share how they chose to be consistent and what helped them to be so even 5 years into recovery.
Part 4 of this 5 part series discusses the household needs and the connection to them as an indicator of real recovery.
In part 3 of this 5 part series Brannon, Ashlynn and Coby discuss what it is like to give empathy and patience to the one betrayed. The good news is that they will share how to and how not to do this and it will be from their personal experiences.
What does it look like, to be honest? Why do some lie or share half-truths? What does that do to relationships? How can it be given without reservation? Brannon, Ashlynn and Coby discuss this topic that is so small but is a key building block to safety and trust.
This is part one of a five part series and it will describe how you can know if they are in recovery. There is a balance between "doing" and "being" recovery. This series will help identify markers of both to determine if they really are in recovery.
When the the conversation seems to take a left turn and then another and in confusion, you ask yourself what they really mean? It is hard to know what they really mean and what they are trying to get at and there are numerous ways the message is clouded. Let's see what Brannon and Tyler Patrick, his brother that treats sex addiction and betrayal trauma, say about this challenging aspect of recovery.
Brannon and his brother are both therapists who treat sex addiction and betrayal trauma but how did that happen? For the first time, they are in the studio to discuss how they both ended up in the same field with the same specialty. Listen as they discuss some of the key issues they face as therapists from the perspective of brothers.
The podcast is really a way to Brannon, Ashlynn, and Coby to share their experience and insights from addiction, betrayal, and recovery both in life and in the clinic. However, they are aware that the anonymity that the podcast provides also does not facilitate the ability for listeners to ask questions. That is challenging. However once a month they do allow people to ask questions on their Patreon site. Today's episode is a sneak peek as to what that monthly Q&A is like. Find out more about the access to Brannon, Ashlynn, and Coby go to patreon.com/betrayedaddictedexpert and see what fits you best. Supporting the podcast can be done with a simple $2 monthly donation.
When there are so many unknowns in life how do we manage our thoughts to the point of not letting the worst-case scenarios play out in our heads over and over? How do we recognize we are going down that path before things really get out of control? How do we reality check our fears that manifest in our minds and feel so real? Listen as Brannon, Ashlynn and Coby approach this topic.
Why did Brannon decide to become a therapist? What was behind his decision and how did he become so specialized? Listen as Coby and Ashlynn ask all kinds of questions to reveal the man behind the expertise.
Relapse is a part of recovery and a painful one at that. What happens when relapse does take place and what is the right course of action? Listen as Brannon, Ashlynn and Coby walk through the ins and outs of this topic.
Passive-Aggressive relationships are challenging but most people don't know they are acting that way. It is taught by example and very easy to pick up. Honesty and vulnerability are the keys to getting out of this kind of relationship. It takes mindfulness but once you really get it, you can work on it.
Sexual feelings can be riddled with shame and guilt which can increase the feeling of being "bad" for having them. Where do they come from? How can one see it when it happens and make sense of it? How can one move beyond them? Listen as Brannon, Ashlynn and Coby move through this episode on the delicate topic.
When the conversation of sex is avoided, minimized and ignored what do we do? What can be done? How can it be discussed in a way that is safe and honest? What keeps this topic so taboo? Listen as Brannon, Ashlynn and Coby share experiences of their own and the journey they have had.
What does it feel like to be controlled by a partner when it comes to sex? What is the approach when one person in a relationship does not feel like like they can be themselves and authentic to who they are because they are being controlled by the other?
As part of the Sextember series on the podcast, Brannon, Ashlynn and Coby walk through rejection and how it plays a role in a relationship. Why does the addict reject the betrayed? Why does the betrayed reject the addicted? What must be considered when people deal with this? Listen as Brannon, Coby and Ashlynn take a new spin on this sensitive topic.
This is a one of a kind episode where Brannon, Ashlynn and Coby host a live event and allow their audience to ask questions of any kind. They have never produced an episode like this so listen as they field questions of all kinds.

What else was it that lead Coby from disclosing the truth? Listen as Brannon leads Ashlynn and Coby on this episode to discovering the things that kept him from disclosing truth.

Work was an environment for Coby where he was a different person. He did not act the same at work as he did at home. This caused a lot of questions, anxiety, confusion, doubt and betrayal for Ashlynn. Listen as Coby shares what he did do that was no appropriate at work and its effect on Ashlynn.

Is there something more to take into consideration when making a decision on which therapist is right for me? All these questions and more are discussed today on this very honest and candid episode.
What are the signs? What are the things to be looking for? How do I know they are cheating or if I am just spinning in my head? All these questions are addressed in this episode.
There is never any magic pill to recovery but there is a way to make small improvements even when things suck. Being curious can make all the difference when things are tough as it can help you get out of your own way and consider where your partner is.

Listen as Brannon, Coby and Ashlynn share their experience with this curious frame of mind and perspective.

That is the first instinct much of the time but why is it not helpful? What does it do to the relationship? Listen as Brannon walks through this key crossroad of recovery with Coby and Ashlynn.
This is a sneak peek of the first of six modules in an online course we are creating called From Shattered to Thriving. This episode will give a little glimpse of what to expect behind this content-rich course. For more info on the course go to shatteredtothriving.com
When words are cheap how can an addict expect the betrayed to embrace a kind and sweet word? How can something be true when there is nothing by way of action to support such a statement? Listen as Coby gives insights to this exact action when he was acting out in addiction and how Ashlynn felt and responded when she heard such things. Brannon sheds light on this dynamic that is riddled with complexity.
Betrayal trauma is a real thing. It affects so many and is devastating. But what if the experts treating this have it wrong and cannot get their patients through this trauma? What if they don't know how to move them forward in a systematic way so their patients are not stuck?
Not acting out is a thing and often times is the immediate goal. However, when we don't feel better and our partners seem to feel the energy that goes with the white knuckling, things can get tough. So why can't I stop white knuckling?
Coby could not figure out how to build trust as he did not know how to speak the truth even in small things. The effect on Ashlynn was significant to see him hide or lie about the little things in life. Brannon leads these two on the journey of discovering why truth was so hard for Coby to speak and what the effect was on Ashlynn.
There is so much that goes into recovery. Doing can keep everyone busy till the wee hours of the night but what happens when we feel like something is missing? Here some things to consider when you get to that spot.
This delicate episode will describe how Ashlynn and Coby were raised when it comes to demonstrations of love and those behavioral norms impact their relationship. Brannon leads them through the path of bridging the gap.
Ashlynn and Coby are guided by Brannon on how recovery can be a drag and what that looks like. It can be a hardship to put so much time, energy and resources into such a devastating thing when you don't feel better.
When things went wrong for Ashlynn and Coby, they developed eyes to see all the things that were bad, hard or fell short of expectations. This episode describes what that looked like and how Coby developed eyes to see his failings from a young age and how he carried that into his marriage and perpetuated addiction.
