Jake Piskor has been doing stand-up in Buffalo since 2017. It only took him nine years to become Buffalo's Funniest Person. He won that honor on Sunday, July 19 and never has to compete in that contest again. Whether it's his thirst for more details or his mustache, he's found himself on the receiving end of several unique encounters with strangers -- adding fuel to his on-stage material. He joined his high school friend and former Buffalo's Funniest Person, Jake Samson, to help run the Rust Belt Comedy Showcase at Nietzsche's.

Then she enrolled in a stand-up class and developed a new interest. She's one of the better "younger" comedians in the Philadelphia suburbs -- proving it by reaching the finals of SoulJoels' Best of the Burbs contest in June. Trebor Finnegan has been doing stand-up in Buffalo since 2023. He was a funny, shy kid in Dallas before moving to Buffalo when he was 14. He's only 28 now, but he's established himself as one of the scene's top rising comics. He just took second place at Buffalo's Funniest Person contest at Helium Comedy Club. Serena Thiel is has been letting life take her where she feels comfortable -- and it's working out for her. She started doing stand-up in Bozeman, Mont., in 2020 with her friend, Alex Kaufman. After a couple years off, she opted not to go to Mexico while traveling and stayed in Austin, Texas. She got back on stage and found herself doing really well on Kill Tony in March. They invited her to perform at their show in Madison Square Garden. That went well, too. She's approaching comedy like a job now in hopes that she can put off having to get a real one.

Mark Riccadonna grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, but got his start in stand-up while working the door in a New York City club. His comedian friends bet him he couldn't get on stage in 2002 and he hasn't gotten off. He went to school to become and actor and he's doing that, too, along with directing. Riccadonna moved to Ambler, Pa., but he's staying just as busy. He's got a podcast called Drinks, Jokes and Storytelling and will be featuring at the Rubber City Comedy Festival in Akron, Ohio, between May 4 and May 7.

Karen Rontowski wanted to get out of Massachusetts, so she took a job as a cigarette girl in Las Vegas and it changed her life. She's been doing stand-up for the last 30 years, performing on The Late Show with David Letterman, Comics Unleashed, Live at Gotham, Comedy Central and Mysteries of the Unexplained and has a Dry Bar Comedy special. She left Los Angeles to visit her parents in Utica, N.Y., and is getting acquainted with the different comedy scenes. Rontowski makes her living reading Tarot cards and she's been able to blend the two quite well. It was good to meet her -- officially. You'll see what I mean.

John Bruton is one of the busiest comedians in Ohio. Based in Cleveland, Bruton runs two weekly shows -- Make Em Laugh Mondays and the Friday Late Show -- and released Nothing Special on YouTube in January. He works with Ali Siddiq and anybody who comes through the Cleveland area at the surrounding Funny Bones and the Cleveland Improv. His great uncle, Bill Bruton, played with the Milwaukee Braves -- he was pretty good, too; led the NL in steals his first three years -- so John and I talked a lot about baseball and basketball and what it's like to be a Cleveland sports fan.

Binghamton comedian Bill Lake stopped by to talk about the new comedy club, The Boho, that's opening on Friday, Nov. 8, and how he developed his style on stage. He wrote jokes for Late Night with David Letterman, the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and Saturday Night Live before finding a home on the stage. Lake has worked at clubs and comedy festivals all over the East Coast.
