A few years after closing his practice, Dr. Jerry Kennedy started Black Sheep DC (now Rocket Chiro). His original goal was to create a resource for new chiropractors. His journey from ignorant new graduate to competent chiropractor was a rough one. It was expensive too. He was hoping he could create some trainings and resources that would help young chiropractors in a way that no one helped him. Basically, he wanted to go back in time and help 24-year-old Jerry.
Over the years, Dr. Jerry has added more services for chiropractors. Honestly, he feels he should have done it sooner, but says he was pretty slow to adapt. Now Rocket Chiro offers websites, SEO, reputation management, and online advertising services for chiropractors along with affordable, practical business and marketing trainings.

Dr. Heart began her training in Acupuncture at the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine in 2003 with Dr Huisheng Xie DVM, MS, PhD. She completed her certification in Veterinary Acupuncture in 2005. She is currently working on her Masters in Chinese Herbal Medicine at the Chi Institute. She obtained her certification in Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy (Also known as Animal Chiropractic) from the Healing Oasis Wellness Center in 2007 where she was trained by Pedro Rivera DVM. Rachel became certified by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) in 2008. She is currently completing a series of seminars on Postural Rehabilitation in Horses with Judith Shoemaker VMD and Karen Gellman DVM. She has also trained with Marvin Cain DVM (Acupuncture), Jean-Michel Boudard (Osteopathy), and Carl J. DeStephano (Applied Kinesiology/Functional Neurology).
It is the integration of this career path that has led Dr. Heart to the concepts of restorative healing. Success with cases has demonstrated the obvious synergy that occurred when problems could be treated in relationship to the rest of the animal. Each year brings more opportunities to further learn about and refine the techniques used to help the animals and their owners.

We have an amazing topic that we’re going to be discussing today that you won’t want to miss! Today, Dr. Katie talks with Dr. Petra Sullwold! She graduated from Life West Chiropractic College in 2007 and received her Animal Chiropractic Certification through Options for Animals in 2008. She has been an avid equestrian since age four. Before becoming a Chiropractor Dr. Petra was an Equine Sports Massage Therapist for 10 years.
She currently operates two businesses: Mancos Chiropractic, a three-doctor chiropractic practice for humans and small animals, and Equus Chiropractic which solely focuses on equine chiropractic. She travels all over the state of Colorado adjusting Top Level Competition horses to Backyard ponies. She loves the variety of her work and has a deep passion for chiropractic history and philosophy as it pertains to animal chiropractic. She has spent countless hours at the Palmer Davenport Archives to gain a deeper understanding of animal chiropractic’s past.
What many chiropractors don’t understand is that animal chiropractic may not be covered under your human chiropractic statute in your place of residency. With this knowledge, Dr. Petra started to gain traction in the state of Colorado to help change the laws so animals could have access to well-qualified, certified, and licensed professionals. She and many others worked tirelessly to change these laws between the veterinary medical association and the Colorado Chiropractic Association. After a full year of negotiations, their Chiropractic Practice Act was passed allowing Doctors of Chiropractic to adjust animals!
So join us today to learn how you can start navigating change where you live to help animals have access to chiropractic care!

What is the benefit to calling vets that refer patients to you?
More importantly, what do you say?
Here is a brief outline of the method I use when following up with new referral partners.
Let's not leave animals in the middle!

Imagine you're a drug rep arriving at a BUSY doctor office.
There's a full waiting room, the doctor is frantic, and you feel like the front desk staff is begging you to leave upon arrival.
What you leave with the office is IMPORTANT.
Between the choice of a business card, a brochure, or a professional folder, always make the wise decision to go ABOVE AND BEYOND expectations.
Just keep going.
A real life story of someone telling me: "No."
Hearing "no" is a part of life. You are unfortunately going to hear a lot of it when you are just starting out.
Some people are not going to believe in you, and that's okay. Their belief is smaller than what you know you are capable of. Every NO makes room for the NEXT OPPORTUNITY.
Live everyday to prove someone else wrong.

Now, as a DC practicing on animals.... I get a lot of questions.
But, the most important questions that your referring vets WON'T ASK (but need answered) are delineated in this episode.
When forming a new relationship, address these questions first to start the foundation for a great lasting relationship.
Communicating chiropractic by 1st meeting the patient's needs
Answer the BIG THREE first.
1) Can you even help me?
2) How long will this take?
3) How much is this going to cost?
Then, you have 8 seconds to build trust and 20 seconds to communicate chiropractic.
Listen to me explain chiropractic and then give some metaphors you can use in your day to day practice.
20% of patients will DRAIN you.
Don't focus on them. Focus on the 80% you live and love to serve.
Defining your success
An interview with my dear friend Dr. Ashlee Edwards
Excerpt from: Good to Great by Jim Collins
Today we're going to talk about finding our gifts, sharing our gifts, and making a living with our gifts.
While Dr. Ashlee is not an animal chiropractor, she is uniquely trained as a chiropractor with an emphasis in functional neurology and clinical neuroscience. She is a new grad that is exceptionally skilled as a communicator and she speaks exceptionally well to finding your path through the following three questions:
1) What can you be the best at?
2) What is financially viable?
3) What are you deeply passionate about?
Final thoughts
Excerpt from: 3 Feet from Gold by Sharon Lechter / Greg Reid

(Passion + Talent) * (Association x Action) + Faith = SUCCESS

The adjustment is about precision and speed; it has nothing to do with power.
Women can adjust horses and they do a great job.

Have you actually sat down, been intentional, and SCHEDULED your new year?
Being intentional about your schedule can make you more efficient this coming year, so here are a few exercises to get you ready for 2020. It's about being PRODUCTIVE not BUSY.
1) Calendar audit of last year
-First column: things I did that didn't serve me or my business
-Second column: things I did that served me or my business (hint: see where patient referrals came from)
-Third column: things I want to make time for and how often do I want to do those things
2) Set your business hours
Don't get lost reacting to other people's schedules. You will easily get behind! Be intentional and block off "business hours" by creating a master legend for your calendar.
For example: 6-8am can be your time to work out / plan your day, 9-5 can be business hours, and 6-8pm can be for family time. If you block it off NOW you are "BOOKED." (You don't need to tell other people why you are booked, just that you are.)
Then, in your calendar, put in your appointments and commitments according to your master legend.
3) TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
My biggest pet peeve is when other people call me and say "I hope I can..." or, "Well it'd be nice if..." and then I ask them where they are and they have no idea.
WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS! How many new patients do you see? How many visits do you see? What is your patient visit average? If you don't track this, you will never know how to move forward.
((Shout out to the episode I reference in this podcast:))

Moving your business forward by serving others
Excerpt from: Sell or Be Sold by Grant Cardone
"People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."
If you want to move your business forward, you have to realize a sales transaction is not about how much you know about your product or service and why it is awesome. Moving your business forward requires you to understand the needs of the consumer sitting before you.
Stop preaching. Start listening.
Welcome to Making Strides for Animal Chiropractic!
In this episode, I dive in to what it takes to become an animal chiropractor in the United States. There are many different options available and I want those that are interested to know the pros and cons of each program.
There are 2 recognized certifications in the USA right now: the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) or the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association (IVCA). These associations require you to take a 200-300 hour post-doctorate program in order to sit for their exam. Most programs only allow DCs and DVMs to enter.
Investment is anywhere from $6,000-$16,0000
American Veterinary Chiropractic Association
The AVCA's website can be located here: https://www.animalchiropractic.org/
They currently accept the following programs: Parker, Options for Animals, Healing Oasis (?), ACES, Health Pioneers Institute, Veterinary Chiropractic Learning Center, Backbone Academy
Once you have completed a program, testing information can be located here: http://avcaexam.regstep.com/
The test is offered 1 time a year and is $700.
International Veterinary Chiropractic Association
The IVCA's website can be located here: https://ivca.de/
They currently accept the following programs: International Academy of Chiropractic, Backbone Academy, Options for Animals.
Once you have completed a program, testing information can be located here: https://ivca.de/ivca-certification-exam/
