In this Mystic Monday episode we hear from the Pierre Teilhard de Chardin SJ (1 May 1881 – 10 April 1955) was a French idealist philosopher and Jesuit Catholic priest who trained as a paleontologist and geologist and took part in the discovery of the Peking Man. He conceived the vitalist idea of the Omega Point (a maximum level of complexity and consciousness towards which he believed the universe was evolving), and he developed Vladimir Vernadsky's concept of noosphere.

In the ninth Mystic Monday episode we hear from the Sister Thea Bowman (1937-1990) was a Roman Catholic religious sister, teacher, and scholar who made a major contribution to the ministry of the Catholic Church toward her fellow African Americans. She became an evangelist among her people, assisted in the production of an African American Catholic hymnal, and was a popular speaker on faith and spirituality in her final years. She helped found the National Black Sisters Conference to provide support for African-American women in Catholic religious institutes.

This past weekend I was privileged to be able to preach at the church where I am on staff. I thought it would be fun to share that sermon here on the podcast as a type of bonus/semi-unplanned episode. The texts I preached on were Genesis 32:22-31, 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5, and Luke 18:1-8. In this sermon, I talk about how parables as a mode of communication that demand action and how we can not simply just ignore the problematic and difficult passages that we encounter in the pages of the scriptures.

This past weekend I was privileged to be able to preach at all three services at the church I am employed at. I thought it would be fun to share that sermon here on the podcast as a type of bonus/semi-unplanned episode. The text I preached on was Luke 10:38-42 and Amos 8:1-12. In this sermon, I talk about how it is not merely enough to challenge individuals to make time in their lives for Sabbath/Contemplation but rather the church must be willing to push back against the systems that make those very acts a privilege for the few.

The second episode of 2019 is here! This week I am joined by our first returning guest Dr. Thomas J. Oord to talk about his forthcoming book "God Can't." In this book Thomas has ambitiously proposed a solution to the greatest theological/philosophical question to in human existence... If God is good then, why does evil exist in the world?
It was such a joy to have Tom back on the show and I can not recommend his latest book enough. In this episode we push back against the traditional metaphysics of God's omnipotence. We talk about a better way to understand how God is "Almighty," the continued work of God beyond the grave, and how God heals via the cooperation of all of creation.

The first Sunday after the feast of the Epiphany is the day we remember the baptism of Jesus and the importance of this great mystery. Wil Gafney, Hebrew Bible Scholar, Episcopal Priest, and author, to talk about one of her latest books Womanist Midrash: A reintroduction to the Women of the Torah and the Throne. In this episode, we explore the lives of several women from the Hebrew Bible through Rev. Will Gafney's Womanist perspective and through the Jewish tradition of Midrash. This book was moving, challenging, and wholly convicting and I can not recommend it enough!

We spend the episode talking about his book The Unocntrolling love of God, Providence, and the question of how much does God really know? Thomas Jay Oord is a theologian, philosopher, and scholar of multi-disciplinary studies. Oord is an award-winning author, and he has written or edited more than twenty books. He is most known for his contributions to research on love, open and relational theology, science and religion, and the implications of freedom and relationships for transformation.

The first official episode since the relaunch is on my all time favorite heretic Origen of Alexandria! In this episode I talk about how Origen helped me to start believing that God is far greater than I could ever have imagined! *After reviewing the episode I noticed one part may sound really condescending toward those whom I mention that called me a heretic. I want to clarify that when I said "they are weak" I was not referring to the people who called me a heretic but rather the boxes that we often "place" God in.
