The Gen X Factor - by Just Jeff... and the Dazzlingly Uncool: Recent Episodes

Rocky Seale

Brothers Jeff and Rocky discuss growing up in the 70's and 80's! They consider themselves "dazzlingly uncool." Make no mistake about it, they were both cool back in the day. But, nobody thinks middle-aged men are "cool." That's a young man's game. So, they strive to be the most "dazzling" versions of "uncool" that they can possibly be! In other words, the dad jokes will fly. They hope to provide some nostalgia for those who lived the Gen X upbringing with them, and also to provide some entertaining stories and advice (possibly questionable) to the generations that have come after them! The guys discuss the current atmosphere of cancel culture, and how it has impacted som many things that were once so enjoyable.  While Bill Cosby deserves all that has come to him if the allegations against him are true, it does not change the fact that we laughed and laughed while listening to our parent's early Cosby comedy albums, watching Fat Albert, or enjoying The Cosby Show.  This is sensitive territory, with "cancellation" being doled out these days for "infractions" far from felony!

The boys are overcome by the Christmas spirit, and as such, Rocky recalls a charming tale of holiday cheer that actually wound up causing considerable pain for the young siblings.  While Rocky's discomfort was somewhat existential in nature, Jeff's was much more palpable (and may have left a mark on more than just his subconscious) leading him to question whether the yarn Rocky spun was actually a "Christmas story."  By insisting that it was, Rocky triggered their own take on a debate that has captivated the nation... nay, the world... "Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?"  Little brother, Toby, joined in for that discussion.  Don't miss it!!

Sure, you may choose to offer up sun-dried grapes as snacking fare for your kids... that's your choice.  Just don't expect your little health nuts to win any popularity contests if you do!  The boys discuss the importance that available snacks had on determining which friends houses to frequent back in the day.  Their own house was always well stocked (if only they had owned Little Debbie stock!), and they pay respects to their Mom for making that happen!  In segment two, they reflect on some odd band names from the 80's. Oh, and did we mention that Jeff once had to briefly follow a no sugar diet?  Oh, the humanity!!!

What begins as an examination of Jeff's less than stellar academic record quickly evolves (devolves?) into a discussion about one of life's great pleasures... the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  The boys discuss different variations on the culinary genre, including PB&J-themed alcoholic beverages.  They then pay their respects to the great peanut-powered pioneer GWC, and express their sympathy for those afflicted with the "Millennial scourge"... the dreaded peanut allergy.

RBG, Jerry Jeff Walker, Helen Reddy, Mac Davis, Joe Morgan, Bob Gibson, Whitey Ford, Tom Kennedy, Tony Lewis, and last but not least... EVH.

Ah, the Hollywood remake.  Is it evidence of a complete loss of originality and absence of new ideas?  Or, is it a cry for help from the current generation who recognizes that the movies of our era were some of the best ever made? Either way, there are some movies that should never... EVER... be remade!  Which ones, you ask?  Well friend, find a comfortable spot, cue up this episode, and we'll tell you.

The topic this week is the oft quoted, seminal comedic masterpiece, Caddyshack!  The boys open with their own memories of somehow getting to see this one in the theaters with their Dad  (it was rated R), and living the lifestyle themselves growing up near and working for a golf and country club!  Segment two is spent going over the movie itself, recalling its many story lines, groundbreaking performances, behind the scenes rumors, and inexplicable use of the vocalizations of a mammal known for its aquatic habitat for one of a more subterranean variety.

Jeff, along with Rocky and Toby (Johnson?), reminisce on the genius that was, and is, Blazing Saddles!  Interestingly, they got to experience this movie very differently on two separate occasions.  First, as youngsters in the 70's, when they cracked up at the slapstick and absurdity, and then again as teen-agers in the 80's when they started to "get" some of the jokes and appreciate the social commentary!  It really was like seeing two different movies!  Apart from being arguably the greatest comedy film ever made, this movie makes us more aware than ever of the P.C. culture in which we now live.  It is hard to watch many of the scenes today because the modern lens that we look through can blind us to the satire as it was intended.  At first glance, Millennials may see it as the most racist and bigoted movie ever, but if they pay attention they will see that it may well be the LEAST racist and bigoted movie they could see. In it, racists and bigots are depicted as fools, and the real heroes are those who rise above that constraining world view!  We hope you enjoy listening this week, and that you will do yourself a favor and "whip out" that old Blazing Saddles DVD of yours for another viewing!
