Look, the majority of candidates you place are likely to be passive because those are the only candidates clients want to pay a fee for.
They don't want you to rep somebody who's been out of work for an extended period of time. They want you to headhunt the passive candidate at their direct competitors who they know would be an excellent hire.
This is why we are called HeadHUNTERS.
Knowing that your job is likely to revolve around mastering dealings with PASSIVE candidates, here are 5 critical issues I see people making when faced with a passive candidate.
Go through the 5 mistakes and make sure you're not falling prey to it. Bonus tip at the end for those patient enough to listen to the whole coaching!

In down recruitment markets, clients are looking to kick recruiters when they're down. You can't even blame them because that's the obvious play to deploy that the general public is used to doing.
That's why it's critical to learn the RIGHT word tracks so that you don't lose negotiation ground with clients on rates and expectations on how to partner.
Too many average headhunters have let clients walk all over them - this is a travesty that could've been avoided.
Top headhunters do not allow this to happen and they deploy these exact strategies I'm sharing with you to make sure this NEVER happens to you.
10 tips on how to navigate client conversations to put yourself on top - how many have you tried and what do you think of them? Best of luck - I'm rooting for you to do right by your business to stay strong even in down markets!

In the next 5-10 years, here are 5 trends I predict will seriously impact recruiters' lives in the agency side of the business.
These are based on observations that I've noticed that has changed the way the market works, the way I work, and what is important headed into the next decade to set yourself and your business up for success.
If you're serious about this industry, then you have to compete at a whole another level - it's a different ballgame at the top if you want to monopolize entire recruitment market sectors which is feasible, you jsut have to know how to do it and spend lots of time to achieve it.
Business is brutal but if you do it right, you'll sleep easy and money will come your way bc you'll be top dog in the space!

As a cold caller shot caller since 2011, I have benefited massively from cold calling like a pro. Here are 4 tips to help you get your cold calling head on straight.
It's like bungee jumping. Seems like a terrifying thought but once you make the leap, you're having the best time of your life (not that I've ever bungee jumped, but I definitely did skydive so it's kinda the same idea lol).
Make sure you learn what the pros do and GET PREPARED so that you can make your calls count. Like I say in this episode, cold calling is something you don't practice ON the call. Practice AHEAD of time and make sure you nail it on your actual calls instead of floundering and learning the hard way what works!!

Recruitment success is very much centered around how your business is set up and what niche you're searching.
Like any endeavor, environments matter and if the commercial market you're operating in is unfriendly or inhospitable, you could work hard and be sorely disappointed. This is why picking the right niche is so important.
Many recruiters are assigned their market starting out but it may not be your "forever" niche. Make sure to consider these 5 qualities that the most desirable and profitable niches possess. Think carefully about your next move and strategically put yourself in a position for more success.

Mike shares his tips and tricks, as well as personal experiences and insights on recruitment as an industry both philosophically as well as tactically. Both are important elements of understanding the underlying motivation and drive of recruiters as well as how to succeed at doing a great job of it.

I recently had a terrible client call in which he (a recruitment owner) lambasted contingency search since "so many clients were not serious". Ironically, he was also one of those clients, which I revealed during the call.
Whether you do contingent or retained, you should carefully vet out the seriousness and commitment of the client to fill to the role versus sending you on a wild goose chase. Even for retained, you want to avoid this situation bc our game isn't to collect part of the fee... It's to get the whole enchilada.
And you're not going to get anything if your client is just shootin' their shot and going on a fishing expedition on your boat. Do not let these clients get outta control. In this podcast, I share the sound bites and word tracks to use to gauge their seriousness for you to get paid.

Recruitment is a long game. It's not a reactive job like working in a factory or in retail.
You have to keep yourself going to reach your goals and achieve on a daily basis. As much as your manager may try to keep you motivated and help you, at the end of the day, all you got is yourself to be your cheerleader and accountability partner.
Here are 6 tips that help me keep my eye on the prize as an agency recruiter. At this point, money can't be the sole reason to keep hustling - it goes deeper than that and we must dig deeper.
To become successful, mindset is critical, as we all have heard. Having experienced the highs and lows of mindset, I personally know this to be true. It's no coincidence my best years in production have always been a result of not making excuses & being highly action-oriented.

There are 3 main categories of KPIs and then mini-KPIs that lead you to the result of the intended reward.
In this podcast, I break down how the KPIs connect to one another and how important QUALITY is.
You can hit your KPIs numerically but it's a moot point if the quality isn't there.
A lot of agency recruiters start off at college grind shops aka boiler room type sales environments where toxic sales culture is the norm.
I grew up in such a shop and stayed, thrived for 5 years, which is abnormally long considering the dropout rate to be close to 80-90%.
These 7 tips are from my lived experience of how to navigate toxic sales environments to win at all costs.
TRIGGER & LANGUAGE WARNING: negativity, mentions of sexual harrassment, alcoholism in the sales workplace; explicit language
Droppers are everyone's worst nightmare. I believe strongly in never putting up deals in the first place that don't stick. There really is no point in doing that and it hurts everyone in the process.
My dropper rate is about 1 every 2-3 years (I'm perm so that's a contributing factor for why it's low). For some reason (actually many reasons), I just have an insanely low dropper rate which is why recruitment is very profitable for me and has made me wealthy.
It's not by coincidence, it's by formula, by design, and EVERY headhunter can achieve this, I truly believe.
Here are the 5 things I do that always ensure that my dropper rate is as close to 0 per year as possible.
People have been asking, now that client meetings are right back to it, how to best prepare for and win over people during these high pressure business opportunities to drive relationships.

Agency recruitment is an extremely recession/depression/layoff proof profession, assuming you can produce.
Like many revenue generating roles, if you're good at generating revenue, you're always going to be safe from layoffs.
Regardless, I break down a number of factors to consider for any role and hopefully you can help utilize this in determining the market you recruit for or evaluate your existing labor market headed into a rough year ahead.

I cannot stress enough how bad of an idea running a recruitment firm without sales or recruitment experience is.
There is a reason why headhunter fees are 20-35%. It's because this ISN'T an easy pop-in and win business.
It takes expertise, experience, perseverance, cleverness, will-to-win, investment of time, and ingenuity to sustainably succeed.
If you're one of the very rare exceptions to the rule, bravo for you. But the majority of people would be well off to heed my advice on this: You don't want to learn and earn on your own dime - do it on someone else's.
This business is very challenging and you can't just pick it up from the womb - this is a taught and learned business.

MPC - most placeable candidate - was a term I heard once I started DG Recruit, my recruitment firm only services top-billers or up and coming billers.
But this was something that I mastered.
In my world, we called this the "candidate sell-in".
I used this exclusively to drive client engagement and sign-on new accounts.
This is the ONLY thing that works to get clients signed up. There is no point to reinvent the wheel or to try something new. This is it, day in and day out.
Nail your MPC pitch, nail the client, nail the role. Heck, you'll probably set yourself up to get retained on it too while you're at it.
Here are the top things to do to master the MPC process & how to get new accounts signed up.

I was 26/27 when I decided to take on the challenge of building out executive search as the next step of my career after 3-4 years of working the pharma market as a niche recruiter for a specific vertical.
Now, I wanted to make even MORE money while working 'less'. Due to the size of exec placements, you could absolutely make less placements but make MORE money!
The beauty of this magnificent desk of exec search revealed itself shortly. Within 1 year of working at half-mast, I broke $600k in billings and left my firm on a high note after the holidays the following year when I decided to quit employment forever more.
Despite the intimidating task of building another market from scratch, it wasn't anything new but required more diligence, effort, and detail-orientation.
In this ep, I walk you through exactly what went down so you can use the strategies I did in your own business and see how it goes for you.

There are top billers and then there are people who really knocked it out of the park. For these people, recruitment was like for many of us, an accident, but it was life changing and exceeded even the wildest of dreams.
Matt Abbasfard is one of those people who broke unto the recruitment scene with a big splash as a top-biller from the first year he started, breaking $230k+ in his first year in the biz and over $500k in his 2nd in terms of personal earnings.
That is insane notwithstanding, but even more so because the year before he started recruiting he earned $50k.
His story is SURE to inspire!

This one is a good one. Instead of operating on dinosaur recruitment tactics, here are SIX tips on what MODERN agency recruiters are doing.
Recruiting has changed a LOT even since when I started not so long ago in 2011. Now, it's EVEN more volatile, innovative, and ripe for disruption IF you know how to play the game.
Recruiters fall into two camps: one who follows the traditional methods of recruiting like cold-calling and outreach versus those who add in marketing and utilizing the internet to sell for them.
There is a balance of having BOTH - one hand washes the other and increases your market share.
Today's modern agency recruiter abides by a different and 2.0 recruitment playbook. Listen to the whole ep to get all the ideas downloaded so you can leverage it to make yourself FAMOUS in your space!

As a full-desk recruiter since day one on a brand new desk, I was cold calling clients and candidates to build my book from a standing start of zero.
I had literally NOTHING to recruit for so I had to essentially bullsh*t my way into mattering within my market.
I had to fight tooth and nail and learn this business ASAP or else I would fail and starve since I was on a godawful, low base lol.
Here are the strategies I adopted that helped me crawl of nothingness into dominating and monopolizing my market, beating out my competition who had decades on me in terms of experience.
USE these strategies to boost up your ability to get ahead to become a premium vendor and headhunting/staffing resource.

Counteroffers are not a new phenom.
You can bet a company will find it cheaper, easier, and safer to throw money at existing staff rather than a new hire that they need to pay a headhunter for ANYWAYS.
If you're mostly going after passive candidates, you better cover counters til you're blue in the face, at EVERY stage, not only during closing or offer time, bc by then, you will be much too late.
Don't be the person who ends up being used and abused to boost up someone else's salary at your own detriment to your client and your own reputation on the street.
Make sure everything you do is on a needed basis instead of begging for scraps and for others to indulge you, because they won't.
You have to find opportunities WORTH taking and put all your efforts into those rather than try too hard to experiment or take your chances.

If you are thinking of hiring someone who already has agency recruitment experience, you have to proceed with caution because 80-90% of the industry leave the job and the turnover is bonkers. You don't want to be the sucker who ends up hiring someone from another agency and wastes your money, time, and effort on someone who fails at your firm before they hop off to their next gig.
This has happened too many times to even the best of managers and producers simply because you want to believe in the goodness and motivation that people should have.
Listen to this episode to figure out how to assess experienced agency recruiters to see if they're the right fit to move to your agency.

Yes, I say "deal" here because I don't enjoy working with active candidates as a choice or preference; we need to DEAL with the fact that they're already active.
This poses a real threat to our time, our energy, and ultimately our survival in this industry if we let one too many active candidates get under our skin.
The ideal goal is to work with the best passive candidates exclusively, but that's increasingly rare today, so you have to deal with what you got.
Here are some tips on how to handle the active candidates and manage your own expectations and approach in the process!!
It's not pretty but it's the truth.

For lack of a better way to put it, if you're a young gun trying to make it staffing/agency recruiting/headhunting to get new clients signed up, for the love of everything that's holy, DO NOT SELL TO HR PEOPLE.
If you didn't know, please do know this:
They are NOT your friend.
They are NOT on your side.
They do not CARE about you/your livelihood and they'll get in the way.
The only person you should be building relationships with are the HIRING MANAGERS IN YOUR CHOSEN FIELD OF SPECIALISM.
These are the golden gooses.
These are your actual clients.
Find them, build relationships with them, and have them GET YOU IN THERE.
A big aha moment for me has been realizing that my fixation on goal setting has been incorrect all these years. While I thought it was the root of my success in recruitment, money, and careers, it wasn't.
Focusing on daily actionable small tasks are actually MUCH more important than any vision or goal.
How has vision or goalsetting worked for you in the past? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

The overwhelming advice here is: Beware.
Recruitment owners are charismatic, good at sales, and sound good on the phone/in-person because that's part of their vocation and essential skillset to succeed in this industry.
However, that leads to buyers remorse once you really get to know the business and work there.
Just like how it's easy to hire the wrong recruiter because they said the right things during an interview, it's easy to join the wrong employer because of the same reason.
Recruiting recruiters is an art and joining a recruitment firm is similarly confusing, misleading, and difficult to truly understand without having the right support, in-depth knowledge of the industry, and feedback from others who have worked there.
Be careful and consider these 8 tips during your evaluation process!
As headhunters, everyday we are trying to win on the battlefield. Furthermore, the work environment at a recruiting firm can be stressful so I had to take measures to learn how to best navigate interactions with colleagues as well as figure out my personal wealth building strategy (real estate investing) while working a full time job.

While agency recruitment 100% is a sales job, it's not like a typical sales job in which you're selling a simple commodity at a price that doesn't really change anyone's life.
It's easy to convince someone to buy something but not the same when trying to get somebody to take on a job to change THEIR LIFE.
These monumentous decisions don't come lightly so recruitment is a highly refined sales role which requires ultimate talent, technique, and engagement. Here are some tips to help you SELL to your candidate.
As I've gotten older (not smarter, just more weathered), I've learned some key lessons about what worked for others and what I saw really got in the way of happiness and success.
My goal is always more money and more happiness, not more money more problems, so I've adopted these attitudes towards jobs, money, and people, that have greatly helped keep me on track.
Don't sweat the small stuff - manage the key elements in your life, job, and relationships, and you'll be good to go!
As a headhunter, WE are the leaders when it comes to knowing how candidates think, act, and behave.
When deals drop, it's not the candidate's fault.
Candidates, like all humans, are RIGHTFULLY self-serving. Doesn't make them bad people, doesn't make them mean or selfish, just means they're human.
KNOWING that, it's YOUR job to understand human nature and how that translates into human behavior, lifestyle, worldviews, and use all of that knowledge to anticipate their next move.
Leveraging your depth of analysis, you can then endeavor to either place the person successfully or cut them out of process so as to not waste your time with droppers.

This episode is one of many moving forward that explores the way to look at money and also the labor efforts you put into your career - ultimately, understand, determine, and tenaciously hold on to your plan to achieve the life you want and in the past could only dream of.
With the right planning, of course your future can be exactly what you planned it to be!
Many recruiters find agency recruitment so grueling and underpaying that they decide going internal or on the corporate side is their best option.
As a client-facing recruiter on a full desk from day 1, I intimately witnessed the careers, job responsibilities, and personal life circumstances internal recruiters faced. Their sufferings, limitations, and painful life experiences showed me that actually, contrary to popular belief, agency recruitment is ironically more stable, higher-paying, and more fulfilling as a career.
Listen to all 5 reasons why internal recruitment is truly not what you assume it is. Don't make a mistake that could cost you your career.
As a new grad, I had no idea what I was getting into when I went for my first recruitment interview. However, I implemented a lot of the same tactics I describe here to present myself and my interest in sales in the best way possible to increase my odds of being selected into the role.
Through recruiting executive-level staff down to technical level hires, I trained my candidates on how to best present themselves, and now as I grow my services to help other recruiters, I help recruiters best prepare themselves for interviews as they evaluate the clients we represent - all the best headhunting shops nationwide where 6-figures in year one is the default goal, not a pipe dream as it is in many other subpar shops. As a headhunter, it's tough to always have great days when the job is honestly really hard, especially in the beginning.
Most of the time, when the system you're in fails to generate the results you want, it's time to take a serious think about what is going on and how you're going to navigate the rest of the year/month/week/day.

DGR is beyond excited and honored to interview recruitment legend, Dave Fox, who is CEO & Founder of Focus Global Talent Solutions.
Dave is a multi-million dollar biller, a true gamechanger who made well over $400-600k in INCOME per year as a headhunter within his first few years of employment.
As a recruiter for contract niche roles, Dave mastered the recruitment game by working smart and hard to understand margins, strategies, and the power of focus, both market-wise and from a personal behavior standpoint.
Listen to this on repeat and your billings will certainly increase from all the inspiration from the top 0.01% of billers like Dave!
In my interview process for my first (and last) recruitment employer, I had to do a work sample for my interviewers. They wanted me to come in, sit on the sales floor, and make calls as part of the interview process.
Not only was the actual work sample fun, I also learned a LOT about the nature of my new job. My thoughts after the work sample was "wow, I can't believe people make 6-figures for essentially this simple of a job where I don't have to do manual labor or anything illegal".
Honestly, I was clearly blessed I found a job that was right for me. Here is how YOU can nail your work sample so you can continue along the path of becoming a master headhunter!
As a headhunter, you literally make money off of this one crucial skill of candidate control. If you lose control, you lose your money, future, career, and business success.
Therefore, it's beyond imperative that you become an absolute candidate master so that you make sure you stay on top of your game.
Here are 6 tips I actively adhere to from the beginning of my career to now to make sure I'm staying in control of the conversations I'm having with my candidates at all levels.
As a headhunter who worked at a large agency as well as being the founder of my own recruitment firm, DG Recruit, I've hired and fired people who could not succeed in our business.
Please carefully take into consideration what recruitment really is, so that you spare yourself and others the pain of your failure.
Of course, if this business model works for you and your ambitions to make $200k+ are true, then there is NO better sales job to help you get there!
If you want your start in ANY field, you need to know the BEST way to set yourself up for success. That's why you can't just DIY it.
Headhunting is NEVER something you should do without any prior experience. Even Internal Recruiters DO NOT make it as headhunters/recruiters on the agency side.
Thus, know exactly what you need to do to make this career a reality for you.
It certainly requires a give and take. It's not easy and it won't be for everyone at any life stage, so BE IN THE KNOW.
In this highly anticipated episode, I'm sharing my "secret" to my success as a headhunter. I was lucky I was trained by smart people who did this very well before me and gave me these strategies that I improved upon.
In this episode, I cover:
Coversheet creation
Market mapping

In my career, I messed up by not being well-networked and in position for the right opportunities to leverage my accomplishments in the best ways.
As headhunters, we are insulated in our own groups and cliques. We're told NOT to network. We're bred to think ill of other firms.
The reality is, we need to network just like our candidates do! Here are some valuable pieces of advice on counteroffers if you're having regrets or feeling torn or whether or not to join the new company who's trying to woo you!
As headhunters, we have an ABUNDANT amount of jobs to choose from should we want to switch careers! The incredible communication, business, and human-capital related skills you learn as a headhunter fully equips you to hopefully, feel invincible and do whatever you want next.
Here are a few careers to consider after headhunting:
Internal recruiting/HR
ANY sales job
Entrepreneurship
ANYTHING else you please
As a headhunter, I accumulated enough financial income and assets to retire by 28. At that point, I was blessed to be able to decide what to do with the rest of my life. My answer was: more headhunting and sharing the wealth of headhunting. That's why Dandan Global and now DG Recruit, came into being.
In any case, as you evaluate careers, get in touch with DG RECRUIT!
As your business and as general macro-economic hiring needs continue to expand, headhunters are in an incredibly blessed situation to profit handsomely from today's commercial environment. However, many are struggling under the immense client needs facing their business.
In this podcast, I share techniques to maintain your sanity and workflow by using the following tools:
Live jobs v candidates matrix sheet
Day plan
KPI metrics
Ultimately, there's no shortcut to our job. I can't stress enough how we must also work harder and/or manage our teams better to work more efficiently.
In my mid-20s, I successfully launched the executive search division of my employer's life sciences recruitment business. Within the span of my first year doing this, I racked up over 4 major accounts with average deal sizes of $78-95k, with over $500k in billing as a full-desk headhunter.
The route to market is exactly the same strategy I share with you in today's episode: candidate monopolization and executive summary reachout to your clients. Listen to the whole episode no matter what market you recruit for - it will help you bill more faster!
As headhunters, we all are customer-facing all the time. Oftentimes, we encounter candidates whose attitudes, approach, and style of work is incompatible with our own.
Especially since we usually recruit for STEM people and technical markets, personality types clash even harder due to the fact that we're salespeople.
Thus, here's how YOU can get in control of your candidates' attitudes to get the respect you deserve.
The long-term result of properly executed candidate exclusivity market-wide is that you're able to supply your clients with the best candidates who can also make optimal career choices.
Candidate exclusivity isn't a one-way street. You also have to earn it. In this episode, hear what it is, how to ask for it, and how this can ultimately benefit the headhunter, you.

As an avid reader, I constantly seek answers to life's conundrums and my misery through books.
By understanding others' challenges, solutions, actions, and mindsets, I slowly changed from a broke 22 year old waitress to a millionaire by 30.
These books each help me MAKE and KEEP and GROW my hard-earned money. As someone who grew up in poverty, I created my own rags-to-riches journey. These books are your tools to do the same for yourself.

As a headhunter straight out of college, I was in my early 20s working with clients and candidates double to triple my age first day on the job.
Despite my youth, I was billing over $725k and a top performer at age 25 in my third year of recruitment. I did that by following the advice I share in today's podcast on how to build your business, communication, and recruitment skills as a young professional in the headhunting world.
Being young as a headhunter should never be a negative attribute.
I hope this helps you crack that next level of performance!
As someone who has worked on a variety of sales jobs, I have seen the pros and cons of sales types like real estate, financial wealth sales, and medical device.
For a number of unique reasons I spell out in today's episode, hear why headhunting is something you should consider if you're serious about a career in sales!
As a headhunter ever since college, I still fondly remember my first exciting year in the business.
I was one of the top rookies that year globally having worked my butt off from really the day I got there. I recognized the opportunity at hand and needed to maximize my time that I spent working.
The 3 tips I share are exactly what I did to make sure that I'll always be ahead of the game compared to my colleagues.

Many headhunters and recruiters will always be confused with HR by the general public.
That perception couldn't be more wrong in so many ways, including:
Nature of the job, people who do both roles are opposites
Headhunters are paid a fee that HR wants to curb
Headhunters and HR have opposite incentives
Overall, it takes education and exposure for everyone to get the real story straight - and here it is.
As someone who has profited immensely off of my career in headhunting, I can't say enough how real and gamechanging headhunting as a career is.
When I graduated from college, I had student debt and ZERO jobs in hand. I hated my internships and had no idea what to do next.
Headhunting fell into my lap due my interest and willingness to try sales as a career, specifically the selling of humans. It worked out for a variety of reasons I lay forth that evidence why headhunting is on the rise.
If you're keen to check it out for yourself, connect with me on LinkedIn and email so I can see if I can get you set up with a great start in headhunting!
