How to Find Rest in God. Using the Exodus Generation as an example of those who were not resting in God’s promises, the writer of Hebrews goes on in chapter 4 to make the application personal, both to the Hebrew Christians and to us. The next generation did place their faith in God and, by following the leadership of Joshua, they, some forty years later, entered into God’s rest, the land of Canaan (Joshua 3:14-17).

Hebrews was written to a group of first century Christians who were in danger of giving up. As Christianity began to spread, so did persecution. The test was especially difficult for the Messianic Jews who, in addition to everything else, had to deal with cultural ostracization. While some endured this adversity and others even accepted it with joy, some began to waver in their faith and were tempted to forsake Christ and return to their former religion and practices.

O Come Immanuel exhibits 4th century monastic choir elements leading most music historians to posit that its more than likely the oldest of Christmas carols that we sing. "O Come, Immanuel," is significant because of one very important word in the lyrics. It's the word "Immanuel" meaning that God is with us, which in God’s love language meaning that He’s for us, He desires to be around us.

The providence of God is, sometimes, mind-boggling and we can never tell how God may choose to execute His plans. Theologian Millard Erickson said, “The providence of God means the continuing action of God in preserving His creation and guiding it toward His intended purposes”. What this means is that we can live our lives knowing that God is present and active in every part of our lives and that nothing is happening by coincidence or accident, including pauses.

Just one generation ago, words like witchcraft and black magic had somewhat of a medieval ring to our ears, but not anymore. God’s Protection. Sometimes Christians are mistakenly led to believe that becoming a Christian saves them from a life of trouble and leads to wealth and success. Based upon the life of the apostles, most notably Paul, you’ll notice that whereas, yes, there are without doubt countless blessings, answers to prayer, and life is more purposeful; following Jesus also includes some rough and bumpy trails. With a plot against his life with the full support of the Jewish mafia, i.e., Sanhedrin, Paul has found himself in what could be described as being “between a rock and a hard place”.

Sharing the gospel is something Jesus expects us to do, but what exactly does that mean? In Acts 21, Paul addresses the angry crowd by sharing his personal testimony that has three key elements: B.C.–he describes what his life was like before being born again; Transformation–he describes how exactly he came to believe in Jesus; and A.D.–he describes what his life has been like since. Paul will also use these elements when he is before King Agrippa II (great grandson of Herod the Great) in Acts 26, and it’s a model that we, too, can utilize for sharing the Gospel.
Often we get locked into having our citizenship on Earth or based on whatever church we go to. Pastor Rich Griffith explores the significance of having and the importance of living out a transformed life based on Christ Alone and reflecting our Heavenly citizenship.

Have you ever been the subject of a false rumor? When Paul arrived in Jerusalem, the Christians rejoiced over the success of his Gentile mission. Paul had called an Elder Board meeting for the church in Ephesus to meet in Miletus with the primary goal of warning them about wolves, false teachers, but it’s not all business. They know that he is leaving, but he has also announced that they will never see each other again this side of heaven, resulting in lots of weeping. Paul, however, has some final words of consolation and encouragement...that will encourage us as well.

A conflict of interest occurs when there are two views that are incompatible, i.e., there’s simply no middle ground, no win-win scenario. At times this also happens spiritually. This will be the case for the Christians and the pagan silversmiths in Ephesus. There will be times, especially as we approach Christ’s return, when our allegiance to Jesus will also place us in spots in which there’s no middle ground.

Following Jesus is costly. Friendships, dating, sales, finances, etc. may suffer as a result. The temptation is to hold onto or even return to some of your old ways; i.e., to follow Jesus mostly, but not completely. In Ephesus, some born again Christians come clean and make a complete break with their past from the occult. As a result, we are told, “the Word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.” The same is true today. Making a complete break from old sinful ways results in a more powerful work of God in your life that you will not regret. It is time to come clean.

The first Palm Sunday boils down to an encounter between two groups of people and then everyone in between. Some in the crowd knew who Jesus was. When Jesus rode into Jerusalem, the first group responded by crying out, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” The other group’s response was dismissive and full of contempt: “Who is this???” And then there were those in-between who had no idea what was really going on. In many ways, the same can be said today of how people view Jesus.

With the best amenities that the 1st-century world could offer, Athens was the place to be. It was the home of the world's most famous philosophers, i.e., Aristotle, Socrates, Plato, and others. It was also a city of idols. There was a saying among Greek women that it was easier to find an idol than a good man in Athens. Paul rightfully viewed Athens as a city of lost humanity looking for purpose and truth. Like us, he was heartbroken and disturbed at the spiritual confusion. The question is, where do you even begin when people seem to have no knowledge or interest in truth? Where do you start?

Jesus Freak was a pejorative term that was coined in the late 1960s to describe hippies who had been born again. They were counter-culture to everything that their previous lifestyle embraced, most notably the drug culture. Even today, now nearly a half-century later, we still see the ripple effects of their influence. Long before the Jesus Freaks, two thousand years earlier, Paul & Silas were charged with “turning the world upside down”. Although the charge was meant to be derisive, it was actually a compliment. Whereas we, as 21st century Christians are eagerly awaiting and expecting with great anticipation Christ’s return, the Old Testament saints were eagerly anticipating His arrival. Since the prophecy that a "Son of David" (i.e., the Messiah) would one day rule and reign, there had been great hope with each successive descendant of David that perhaps this could be the One. Perhaps this "son of David" would be the one to right the wrongs, deliver them from their enemies, and reconcile them to God. 'Joy to the World' has the unique distinction of being the most inter-denominational carol, i.e., it appears in the church hymnals of every protestant denomination. "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!" is the 5th most popular Christmas of all time. It first appeared in 1739 and was originally entitled “A Hymn for Christmas Day”. Its lyrics were written by Charles Wesley, the brother of the famous revivalist John Wesley. Its opening lines echo the Christmas account given to us in Luke 2:13-14. Two New Testament books bear his name and he is referenced in several of Paul’s letters, but what do you really know about Timothy? This passage provides some insights into the way Paul and Barnabas strengthened new Christians and churches. In the previous passage (Acts 14:8-18), the people were wanting to treat Paul like a Greek god; but in this week's passage, some old enemies have tracked him down and turned the town against him. They stone him and leave him for dead. Later he gets up and carries on as if nothing ever happened. It's been said that a man or woman in the center of God's will is immortal. For the first time since they set out from Antioch, they enter a town without a synagogue that’s overwhelmingly pagan where they are mistaken for being gods. In response to a prophetic challenge, Luke’s account of the founding of a church in Antioch, where they were first called Christians, concludes with mention of the relief aid sent to the Christians in Judea. The church in Antioch blesses the church in Judea, i.e., they give to causes outside of their own walls. This is especially significant since it is Gentile Christians giving to aid Hebrew Christians.
Do you like waiting? Me neither. In Acts 11, eight years have passed since Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus in Acts 9. At his conversion, he was told that “he is a chosen instrument of Mine to carry My name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel” (Acts 9:15), but that hadn’t exactly happened. Instead, he’s in Tarsus, Turkey. But, literally out of the blue, things begin to change. The same can be true of us. At times it can seem as if God has forgotten about us, but of course, He hasn’t. The question is what to do while you’re waiting.
The last time we saw Peter, he had overcome his spiritual prejudice and had taken the gospel to Caesarea where a Roman centurion, Cornelius, and his house received Jesus as their Savior. They had been baptized and the Holy Spirit fell upon them in the same manner it had come upon Peter and the disciples in the upper room. Upon returning to Jerusalem with this great report, you would think that everyone would celebrate. You would be wrong. Ever notice that it seems like someone always wants to rain on the parade? It may surprise you to know that the Bible talks about depression and includes a suicide. Job once said he wished he'd never been born. For those of you who grew up in church, more than likely you have some religious pet peeves. We all have them. It’s ok to have them. We all do. The problem is when we try to legalize them and/or use them as a spiritual barometer for measuring someone’s spirituality. By teaching us to love our enemies, Jesus seems to take the idea of loving our neighbor a bit far. However, He doesn't stop there. He even says that if someone (presumably a Roman soldier) asks you to go one mile (the bare minimum a Roman solider could conscript you for), to go two. We all have difficult people in our lives. The question is: how do we, as followers of Jesus, live out this teaching and why is it so important to Jesus that we get this?
Nearly everyone knows that the Bible teaches that we should love and treat our neighbors the way we would want to be treated. Neighbor is generally defined as one someone who lives next to or near you. When an expert on the Mosaic law asks Jesus to clarify what exactly determines if one is a neighbor or not, he gets a bit more than he bargained for. Jesus answers with a parable that reveals the heart of God and how we can be a part of bringing heaven to earth.
In spite of the miracles, signs, and wonders, we learn from Acts 5 that some in Jerusalem are afraid to join the church. Why do we fear others’ disapproval so much? Peter’s ultimate point was that the only way to be delivered from the Day of the Lord (Joel 2:28-32) was to seek salvation by calling upon the Name of the Lord (Joel 2:21). To the typical Hebrew, this meant Yahweh or Jehovah; but Peter now makes the case that God also goes by the name of Jesus and that salvation is only available through in and through Him.
Prior to Pentecost, for the most part, the Holy Spirit only made cameo appearances. Joel, an Old Testament prophet, had prophesied that before the Day of the Lord (i.e., the end times) that the Holy Spirit would be poured out and available for all of humanity, i.e. young and old, blue collar and white collar, and you. The tower of Babel had seen the proliferation of languages, with the resulting chaos, confusion and the division of the human family. Pentecost, with its many languages, began to see people united through a common understanding that Jesus is the Messiah. Ever been in a spot where you were unexpectedly forced to make a tough decision? Perhaps there was a deadline and there simply wasn't enough time and yet still, you had to make a decision. In some cases these decisions could be life altering. You wish you could know more but you have to decide. You don't want to make the wrong decision and you need to hear from God. In this message we’ll see what the Bible teaches us about tough calls and decision making.
Debbie Downer. No one sets out to become known as a "Debbie downer". You never set out to be a cynic, but...life happens. A friend, or at least you thought they were a friend, intentionally betrays you. Another "friend" is really only after your money. Or perhaps you were romantically head-over-heels for someone who turned out to be living a double life. It can add up, and if you're not careful turn you into a cynic...you know the type; the one everyone avoids because they're always seeing the worst in things and people.
In Acts 1:12-26, the bulk of the passage is about filling a vacancy created by Judas Iscariot's betrayal and suicide. No doubt the disciples mindset must've been a tornado of thoughts and emotions. They'd been completely blindsided. When Jesus announced that one of the Twelve was going to betray Him, none of them said, "It's probably Judas". Judas had participated in ministry with them. He was "one of us", Peter says in Acts 1:17. The Greek phraseology is insightful. It says that Judas was a "guide" to those who arrested Jesus. He made sure they got Him.
First of all, if you've been blindsided, I'm sorry. It stings. However, I want to remind you that Jesus can relate. It's during these times that we have to be careful that we guard our hearts from spiritual counterfeits, cultural influences, and our own emotions. Jesus is still there for you and always will be.
