¿Cómo sabes si tienes Alzheimer o eres propenso a tenerlo?Jorge Olvera. Omicron is a word I am sure you’ve heard. It’s the latest COVID-19 variant that is spreading through our communities.  But how will it affect us, and when do you know if you have Omicron, the Delta variant, cold, or flu?

It's no surprise that any sniffles or cough may cause concern for many trying to stay healthy. After all, the symptoms associated with familiar illnesses, like a cold and the flu, can also be signs of the coronavirus infection.

What should you look for and how soon do you turn to a doctor? Here to help us understand more about this latest variant is Dr. Janeana White, deputy local health authority, with the Houston Health Department.

Free at-home COVID tests are available at COVIDtests.gov and by calling 1-800-232-0233. The phone line is open seven days a week from 7 am to 11 pm (CST). Assistance is available in more than 150 languages.

Each residential household in the U.S. can order four tests regardless of how many people live there. The tests will be shipped in 7 to 12 days starting at the end of the month.

Testing is a critical step in gaining control over the spread of COVID, and we applaud this monumental effort.

The pandemic changed the way we do everyday things. For caregivers, these changes may mean added stress and a need for resources and help. But did you know that military caregivers experience higher risks of poor health, strained family relationships, and a more immense financial loss than non-military caregivers?

A new study revealed COVID-19 has exacerbated the stress for the 5.5 million caregivers in the U.S. who care for military members and veterans. That's the bad news. The good news is that there is a host of resources available for our brave men and women who have served our country in uniform. Find out more in this podcast and otherse on aarp.org/houstonptc.

You don't need to overexert yourself to see the benefits of exercise. Walking or cycling three times a week can improve thinking skills. That according to a recent study published in the medical journal Neurology.

Let's face it; exercising doesn't seem to topmost of our "to do" lists even during a pandemic. Many of us have excuses from "being too tired" to "not having enough time to exercise."

Dr. Alberto Almeida from Brownsville says it is vital to our health to stay active. Almeida specializes in family and sports medicine. He explains how exercising is essential at any age, but even more as we get older.

For the 40 million family caregivers who provide a great labor of love by helping their parents and spouses live independently at home, the threat of elder abuse is daunting. Some of these family caregivers provide 24/7 care. These individuals may also help with finances, transportation, medication management and more. Others may count on the support of paid aides to help.

Entrusting the care of a loved one to a stranger can be hard. In some cases, the stress and resentment of being a constant caregiver can lead some to lash out harmfully, and a care recipient may not be able, or feel comfortable, calling for help.

In this edition of the AARP Prepare to Care podcast, host Marie-Pierre talks with Rachel Portnoy, Community Engagement Specialist with Texas' Adult Protective Services (APS). Portnoy helps us identify the warning signs of abuse, neglect or exploitation of older adults. She discusses how the APS can intervene and help, and what we can do to help spot and prevent elder abuse in the future.
