This is where we begin - PJ and Clay Experience - Episode 1
Ladies and gentlemen welcome to episode number one of the PJ and Clay Experience.
40 Something:
I certainly think it's important to have gratitude and to be blessed for what we have. So, I've certainly been spending a lot more time with family, certainly been spending a lot more quality time with friends, even if it is on Zoom. It forces you to connect in a different way and so I've been really appreciative of my relationships. So, we always get into these windows of real life, where we have phases.
Hospitality Gene:
If you have the hospitality gene as a customer, do you automatically get better service, flip that around; If you have the hospitality gene, as an employee, are you a better customer somewhere else. And so, when I think about human nature, I think we start taking taken for granted and when you start taking things for granted, then you stop doing the habits that get you to where you are so you talked about training. When does that training start falling off when does it not become as important to become empathetic because of targets, all that kind of stuff?
The Code:
the COVID era we had a year ago, where lockdown happened. NHL shut down, NBA shut down, football, went on a little bit later as they started to figure it out. We're into it a year, all of the sports leagues are back, the professional sports leagues, I should say, we're still seeing some of COVID creeping into some of the leaks, we still have protocols, there are still some positive tests that are happening we just saw in the NHL. We see it in the NBA, we've seen it in Major League Baseball we've seen it in football, is it ever going to go away. Where I guess my question to you is, is this going to make the professional athlete, more understanding and more intelligent about their decisions that they're going to make moving forward with a virus that was out there, and what they had to do to protect themselves and not pass it along to their teammates.

I am enjoying a wonderful Irish Red Ale from sea change breweries, from an Edmonton brewery. Their brewery just off 99th Street, 9850 62nd ave NW Edmonton. It’s just a fun little place to go but their Irish Red Ale is my favourite. April 22, 2021 Today is temperature, a balmy two degrees, a little bit of a change from yesterday's 20 degrees, just to welcome to Edmonton, and so we'll have a chilly weekend and then I think actual spring might start. Patty Marleau celebrated his Gordie Howe breaking record 1768 games in the NHL. In the real world, we have Derek Chauvin conviction, so he was the police officer in Minnesota that well killed George Floyd, so it's kind of cool that he was convicted of all charges.
The Hood / 40 Something
Health tip, it's not about working out. It's not about calories in, calories out. “You need to be more consistent with sleeping eight hours drinking water, eating fruits and veggies, emphasizing protein and strength training” Are you getting the proper sleep? And are you drinking water?
I got my vaccination yesterday, an exciting day for me.
And my counter, I'm pro-vaccination, but I need to do more research.
Get your vaccinations.
Hospitality Gene
It is certainly a different process, what do you do at 40 Plus, when you're trying to build a resume. We have quite a big difference and what kind of experiences we could draw from. But it's interesting when I'm interviewing people now. What am I looking for, one of the things that are important is that the candidate wants a job at my specific business? Why would they choose my place of business? And have they done their research?
History of Absinthe
Absinthe made its resurgence back in about 2005 however, way back in the 1900s, this little green drink was something of a different world. In the 18th century, Absinthe was originated in Switzerland.

Healthy after 40, History of Gin, Oilers Defensemen - PJ and Clay Experience – Episode 4
Timestamp: let's do it. April 17 2021 It's a Saturday. In the theme of 17 which just happens to be my favorite number, we've got 17 degrees out in beautiful sunny Edmonton. That is, to be followed by a forecast of four as a high moral and snowy. Of course, it's going to snow because that's what it does here.
The Hood / 40something -
“How is it we can get into living healthier over 40
I mean, isn't that a bit of the question that talks to a lot of us no matter what age we are really, when we talk about fitness, health, feeling healthy trends the billions of dollars in the fitness industry, telling us different diets different exercises, it's a, it's a crazy world and, and to be honest with you I will be confused about who to trust, who am I going to trust my body with Who am I going to trust such a confidential subject.”
We also cover; Parenting in Sports and Children in multi-sport or specializing in one.
Hospitality Gene -
“What I wanted to bring up real quick is I was reminiscing the other day when I went and got my gas. I went and pumped my gas, and I was thinking back to the days where I had two buddies in high school that were gas attendants at full-service gas stations, and it's something that's gone away. In talking about the hospitality gene talking about full service, remember the day where you would have somebody run out, fill your tank with gas, wash your windows, check your oil, making sure that everything is done right, and you're feeling comfortable and safe. We haven't seen a full-service gas station in a very long time.”
Also, in this section, we discussed the situation developing with the lawsuit and the possible changes in the restaurant and pubs around our province pertaining to the practice of allowing people from different houses to sit at the same table. We were blessed with the excellent advice that PJ delivers on how to BBQ the perfect steak. We also got another history lesson and this time Clay talked about the History of Gin.
The Code -
“Last week we had the trade deadline in the NHL. PJ, why don't you layout for me, what we saw with the trade deadline.
Right. Well, I think that almost without a doubt the biggest trade that surprised me was the Nick Foligno to Toronto from Columbus, just that team is a pretty good team and then to stack it with another captain from another team, another guy that has some good hands can score some balls adds grit and experience great defensively. Great in the room, like it's crazy, so I don't know what was going on in Columbus that Nick had to go. But Toronto got a lot stronger.”
We also Discussed the BCHL leavening the CJHL and what that means for the future and recruitment. as well as the Oilers Defence with the acquisition of Dmitry Kulikov and the makeup going into the last week of the season.

Hospitality Gene
I went for a business lunch at Earls on the West End and randomly, the manager came up and said hey how's everything going and I said, everything is great. Thank you very much. He's like, lunch is on us. We are just going through random tables taking care of lunch, you were really friendly with the server and, you know, thank you very much for coming in. Not everyone makes decisions to come in and visit us anymore and so thank you very much and I've been twice since.
