We dive into the world of theatrical stunts and what it takes to be involved in a production of this magnitude. This week we share our experience participating in a video contest. These types of contests are generally open to the public and can be a great way to test your production skills in number of areas such as budget, schedule, cinematography and creativity. While we've participated in competitions before, this was our first video contest that carried a $10,000 grand prize. One of our hurdles was that we didn't find out about it until 2 weeks prior to the submission date. If two weeks sounds like a lot of time, it isn't. Think about making a video for $10,000, how much time would you need to plan, shoot and edit that video?

Tom Jennings is an award winning filmmaker and journalist. Tom has written, directed and produced more than 400 hours of programming on a variety of topics including politics, religion, history, crime and sports to name a few. His documentaries have been seen on channels like National Geographic, The History Channel
The best way to sum up our interview with Tom was that it was like taking a masterclass in documentary film making. We reached out Tom's production company 1895 Films, to talk about his latest release on Netflix, Diana: In Her Own Words that was produced for the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana's passing. The journey of producing a documentary of this magnitude is a true test in problem solving and ingenuity that every filmmaker should take notes on.
Tom stresses you need to love what you do. There are a growing number of hours for documentary television but Tom says it's probably easier to sell a reality show. Don't ever give up. If one network doesn't want your story, maybe you can tailor for someone else. Sometimes you just have to step and figure out how to make things work the best you can.

This week's guest on the Imperfect Podcast is Jenny Frankfurt who is the founder of the Finish Line Script Competition currently in its third year. The Finish Line Script Competition is based on the premise that rewrites are essential to be a successful writer. The panel of judges provides development notes when requested in order for writers to rewrite and resubmit new drafts for free throughout the entire script competition.
Rather than submitting your script and hoping for the best, the Finish Line Script Competition acts as a partner to up and coming writers with feedback from their mentors that have worked in every aspect of the film and television industry. Today's guest is Robert Sciglimpaglia, an actor and accomplished voice over artist who is also a practicing attorney has been producing his own feature films as an Executive Producer. the past few years. We had the pleasure of meeting Robert at the American Film Market in 2017 where we spoke about film funding and film distribution. What we learn in today's interview is that there is a delicate balance between financing, casting and distribution that may lead to the success of your film project.
In the early days, Robert hosted a local radio program back in the mid 1990's called "The Law Show", and more recently, hosted a radio show called "Ask the Lawyer." Robert's first venture into the acting field was a show called "American Experience: Hijacked!" which aired nationally on PBS-TV and was narrated by Campbell Scott. Since that time, he has appeared in numerous national projects with many big name stars, both in acting and voice overs. His latest project in post-production is an independent feature film, called One, featuring Lance Henriksen.

Pyrotechnics and fire are always a serious matter on set. Joe explains how to start a fire with a battery and matches which is a useful technique for indie filmmakers to be able to start a fire off camera, from a distance. With some household supplies, this DIY practical movie effect can be effective and looks better than any CGI fire effects you would otherwise have to use.
Keep in mind, anytime you're working with fire, safety is important and we recommend supervision while attempting this practical fire effect at home.
Materials To Start a Fire For Your Movie MatchesPlywoodCopper WireSpeaker WireLighter FluidBattery Powered DrillDuct tape How To Start a Fire with a Battery Start by drilling a hole in the plywood and laying it over a hole in the table you're using.Strip the copper wire and leave the metal exposed.Strip the ends of the speaker wire leaving the ends exposed.Tape several matches together.Wind the copper wire like a spring. You can use a match stick as a guide.Wrap the wire around the heads of the matches leaving room on each end. Wrap one end of the speaker wire to the copper and secure with tape. Repeat on the other end.Using your drill battery touch the end of the speaker wires to the leads on the battery. This will light the matches from a distance.Snake the wire through the hole and place the matches heads up in the hole. Center your prop over the hole that you're going to light on fire. Douse in lighter fluid!
Gavin Michael Booth is a producer, editor and director who's known for his indie horror film The Scarehouse. "The Scarehouse" was distributed by NBC/Universal (USA) and D Films (Canada) in early 2015 with international releasing starting August 2015. The Scarehouse was funded in part by Telefilm Canada and the film won Best Feature at the New York City Horror Film Festival in 2014.

We are back from the American Film Market in sunny Santa Monica, California where we spent three days learning, pitching and meeting the film industries biggest players from around the world. The American Film Market hosts one of the industries biggest events for film makers, screenwriters and distributors.
Our #1 tip for success at the American Film Market is preparation. Setup your meetings in advance, don't wait for the last minute to schedule them because the likelihood of getting into a meeting without an appointment is very low. Even if you have an appointment the odds of it being on time may dwindle the later you wait to make that meeting. Not only do you have to prepared to schedule meetings with buyers and distributors, you have to be prepared with your pitch. You need to be professional and have a plan and understand why your film may be saleable and even more importantly what aspects of your film may not be saleable.
Tip #2 for success at the American Film Market is having a completed project. Nobody wants to hear about your concept or idea. Everyone has ideas. Distributors won't even touch you if you don't have a completed production. Screenwriters need completed scripts. Networking and building relationships take time. If you're a first time filmmaker, nobody is going to hand you a check after a 15 minute pitch meeting. If they do, we'd love to hear about it on our podcast!

Bill shares his insights on festival submission trends, storytelling, camera technology and most importantly marketing. First Glance Films is the creator of the hashtag #SupportIndieFilm that has engaged and united thousands of indie film makers around the world.
William Ostroff, the FirstGlance Film Festival’s creator and director, is a Producer, Independent Media Consultant and DGA Assistant Director who has worked on over 100 film and television productions. He graduated from Temple University in 1993 with a degree in film and video and has since worked with major studios such as Disney, Warner Bros, Universal, Dreamworks, and Paramount on feature films and television series.
As the FirstGlance Film Festival Director, he has produced 37 film festivals to date, has watched over 20,000 indie films and is hands on with programming and decision making of all aspects of the Film Festivals. In 2013, he created the World’s Largest Traveling Comic Con Film Festival, which has screened genre indie films to over 5 million attendees over the 1st fours year in 2 countries, with plans of taking this concept global. He continues to work on expansion and new avenues for exposure for filmmakers including creating the hashtag #SupportIndieFilm which is globally accepted as the go to branding on all social media platforms.
Valentina Caniglia is a cinematographer that has worked on over 60 film productions, documentaries, music videos commercial work and more. She is known for her work on the film "The Stand" where her astonishing lighting and camera work caught the attention of American Cinematographer magazine which featured an exclusive article in March 2017 issue.
As a DP (Director of Photography) Valentina is the real deal and brings her positive attitude to her work and life. We discussed the challenges of shooting on location in Palestine to being snowed in in New Jersey. Her eye for coloring and lighting are what makes Valentina’s work unique and why she’s won so many awards. As a female cinematographer success didn't come easy.

We talked to him about everything from his struggles as an actor to how landing the role on General Hospital changed his life. I think Robert is a really humble guy. His roots are on the east coast from the Carolinas and it just seems like he’s really dedicated to the work. He really understands what the fans want and what the commitment is to being a daytime actor on a soap opera like General Hospital.
He appreciates everything from the struggles he’s had and doesn’t take it for granted. It was interesting to talk to somebody about soap operas because honestly we weren't fans but watching his work and watching how it’s done you can see how people are literally addicted to soap operas. They’ve been around for decades. There’s only 4 left, General Hospital being one of them.

Tony Germinario is a writer and indie film director, born and raised in NJ. Tony went to school at Fairfield University where he initially began his screenwriting career. Since then, he has always been involved in creative outlets. At first, he focused on music and became one of the lead songwriters for a touring band called Jel, but then turned his writing skills from songs back to scripts roughly eight years ago.
Since focusing on film, Tony has written 9 feature scripts, several shorts, and has experienced increasing levels of success with his film-making. His first feature film “Wingman, Inc.”, starring Kristopher Turner, Erin Cahill, and Reid Ewing was picked up by Lion’s Gate/Grindstone and was released in April 2015.
Additionally, he has completed three short films, that each had success on the festival circuit. “Séance” won the Gold Kahuna at the Hawaii Film Awards and was a featured selection at the Shriekfest Film Festival. “Selling It” was named an Official Selection at the Long Island International Film Expo and the SENE and New Filmmakers Film Festivals, and “In the Mourning” was selected by the Hoboken and Roxbury MA International Film Festivals and also won an Award of Merit from The Indie Fest.
Tony’s latest feature film Bad Frank, featuring Kevin Interdonato and Tom Sizemore has people talking. It’s won 11 awards on the film festival circuit and recently picked up a distribution deal with Gravitas Ventures. We learned a lot from Tony this week about transitioning from short films to creating feature films. The devil’s in the details and preparation can be the difference between success and failure. Surrounding yourself with a team you can trust is also the key to making big things happen on small budgets in the indie film world.

This week we interview actress Tami Stronach who made her acting debut as The Childlike Empress in the Neverending Story in 1984. The Neverending Story, which catapulted Stronach to stardom, has been a huge inspiration in pop culture and is just as popular today as it was when it was first released. She was studying acting in California, when she was chosen for her role as the Childlike Empress in the iconic 80s movie.
After a couple of decades of making dance and theater in NYC, Tami has now turned her attention to laying the foundation for a content shop that makes family friendly content– not unlike "Neverending Story". The brand is called Paper Canoe Company, which she founded with her husband, Greg.
Tami made one album “Faerie Queen” that nostalgia buffs will remember was a sleeper hit in the ‘80s. This new project is the first in a series of collaborations with a notable crew of indie folk rock artists in Williamsburg. In the coming months she’ll be choreographing and performing in videos for the album and doing promo concerts in preparation for launching a full live theatrical experience later in the year, that will be built to tour nationally and internationally in theatrical concert venues with video projections, puppets, and Tami performing the role of Harmony, the Giant’s Rock Star Daughter.
Robert Craighead has been a notable character actor in Hollywood for over 30 years, with roles in over 40 feature films, hundreds of television appearances, performed in over 100 stage productions across the U.S. and recently seen success as a country music singer.
He’s currently a series regular as Sheriff Mobley on Tyler Perry's new hit drama for TLC, "TOO CLOSE TO HOME" and has been a recurring Guest Star for the last two seasons as Sergeant Clarke on the Fox Comedy sensation, "NEW GIRL".
This year will also see the release of a couple of new feature films he will be starring in, including the western "THE MUSTANGER AND THE LADY", where he will play one of the most despicable characters he's ever portrayed, and "THE TIGER HUNTER" a new comedy co-starring with starring Danny Pudi, Jon Heder and Kevin Pollack.

Geoffrey Cantor is best know for his role as Daredevil's Mitchell Ellison on Netflix. As a trained actor with a background in theater as well as an acting coach himself, Geoffrey brings a unique style to his role on Daredevil. Geoffrey received his degree in theater from Amherst College and also attended the National Theater Institute Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Conn. He continued his training at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, in London, England. As we found out in our interview he has a love of British Theater and can mimic a British accent quite well.

She is an actress appearing as a series regular in the upcoming Puppet Master: Axis Termination series on the El Rey Network. The only female nominee, Tonya Kay won Best Villain from the Horror Society 2016 for her lead role in Bastard (20th Century Fox) and draws upon Meisner, Anthony Meindl, Second City and iO West training to shape her fearless instincts.

We chat with award winning actor Rich Graff who's best known for his role as Lucky Luciano in AMC's Making of the Mob. Rich was born and raised in the heart of New York City and had the acting bug since the day he was born, quite literally. When Rich was born, a producer happened to be there and requested Rich as a Gerber baby.
Rich Graff is a man of many talents such as being an accomplished musician and attending aviation school in NYC. He's also studied with a number of acting teachers to develop his craft.
Rich has racked up 26 acting credits since 2010 with his first major television role, as a detective on "Law & Order Criminal Intent" (2011). His breakthrough role on the big screen came as the love interest of Heather Graham in "My Dead Boyfriend" (2015), directed by Anthony Edwards.
Following up on his success in Making of the Mob New York & Chicago, Rich is producing a film called Amaranth. He is also working on a new television series. Keep an eye out for Rich Graff, he'll be coming to a screen big or small near you!
Michael Price is an Emmy Award winning writer and producer. He's best known for his work on the Simpsons having joined the team in 2002 where he is also a co-executive producer.
Following his success on The Simpsons, Michael was tapped for the wildly popular Lego Star Wars animated TV Series. Episodes include The Yoda Chronicles, The Empire Strikes Out and Droid Tales. We talk with Josh Zeman & Rachel Mills who developed the docu-series The Killing Season on A&E. The show is produced by Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney. The Killing Season delves into the terrifying connections between five unsolved serial killer cases.

Joshua Zeman has been at the forefront of the true crime genre for the past decade. Rachel Mills began her career in film making at the Edit Center, in New York City. As Director of The Edit Center, Mills selected and shepherded such documentary and narrative films as: WINTER'S BONE, GREGORY CREWDSON: BRIEF ENCOUNTERS, and GARBAGE DREAMS.
In 2013, Mills partnered with award-winning filmmaker Joshua Zeman to produce and co-star in KILLER LEGENDS, a documentary investigating true crimes that have inspired our scariest urban legends.
Wise words from Ariel Costa of BlinkMyBrain.tv, the man responsible for the lyrical music video for Green Day's smash hit Bang Bang. With that one video alone having almost 10 million views, his work has been seen by the world.
Ariel Costa has won multiple awards for his animation work which led to this opportunity for him to create the Green Day video and has led to additional projects with Led Zeppelin.

No stranger to the festival circuit, Stone starred in three festival winning short films Henry John and the Little Bug, Sugartown and Once When I Was Dead. She recently complete her directorial debut 'It Happened Again Last Night'.
She lept onto the big screen starring in The Lighthouse opposite Danny Glover. From there she has begun carving her way into the industry with feature films like Fuzztrack City, The Jazz Funeral, and An Old Man's Gold.
In 2014 Stone starred in Lionsgate's Speak No Evil and then went on to star in Anchor Bay's Zombie Killers that also featured her mother and scream queen legend Dee Wallace.
This year she can be seen in 'Ava's Impossible Things' as well as 'Dance Night Obsession' and the highly anticipated 'Death House'.
Gabrielle recently wrapped filming on Tom Hollands 'Rock Paper Dead' opposite Michael Madeson & Tatum O'Neal. Stone is currently working on 'The Competition' alongside Thora Birch and Chris Klein.

On this week’s Imperfect Podcast we review Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War. In one of our last podcasts, we made predictions about the upcoming film, and are surprised that most of those predictions were wrong. The film does not mimic the comic books in many respects, which I guess would be too predictable.
Although Spiderman was shown in the trailer, it wasn’t clear which side he was on. Some of the shots in the trailer were actually cut to exclude Spiderman in the fighting, so it could be kept a mystery. Spiderman’s role was that of the comic relief. He wouldn’t stop talking during the battle. Even though he was fighting against other superheroes, he showed them respect as if he were a baseball rookie playing against Babe Ruth.
One thing that we were all impressed with was when Tony Stark introduces a new virtual reality technology to his former college, MIT, and shows a younger version of himself. The VFX was incredible because most of the audience knows exactly how a young Robert Downey Jr. looks. It is one of those movies that you appreciate more on the big screen rather than on your TV at home, so if you didn’t get a chance to see this film, now is the time.
On this week’s Imperfect Podcast, we discuss the Top 10 TV Show Theme Songs and what makes them memorable. We speak about how some theme songs set the tone for the show, such as the carnival type music in Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, while other theme songs seem to be detached from the show.
When a syndicated sitcom is shown in reruns, the familiar theme is often shortened to make more room for advertising. In recent times, themes from new shows are written with that in mind and sometimes have as little as one chord to begin the show, such as in the series Lost. We further discuss how some classic theme songs such as Gilligan’s Island, Brady Bunch, and The Jeffersons, three of our top ten favorites, supply the background story for the entire show.
Our seven other themes, in no particular order (you have to listen to the podcast for that) are The Flintstones, Happy Days, Sesame Street, Friends, Cheers, The Family Guy (we play a recording of Seth McFarlane and Alex Borstein singing live on the James Lipton Show), and The Fresh Prince of Bellaire (Dan Kane performs the first verse with a karaoke version). We speak of several honorable mentions that did not make our group list. They are the themes from Sopranos, Incredible Hulk, Dukes of Hazzard, The Greatest American Hero, The A-Team, Welcome Back Kotter, Sanford and Son, All in the Family, and Frasier.
