In this episode of The Ferment, Adam chats with Jimmy Cooke about getting pulled into the music scene, touring in a rock band, and the ways that being involved in the church prepared him for that life. Adam and Jimmy also discuss the relationship between Vineyard Worship and Vineyard Worship UK & Ireland. Jimmy Cooke's association with the Vineyard dates back to his teens - he met his wife, Kate, at a Vineyard worship conference in the mid-90s. After studying Broadcast Audio Engineering in London, Jimmy spent 10 years working as a freelance drummer, engineer and producer (whilst working a plethora of part-time jobs to keep the wolf from the door!) In 2011, Jimmy and Kate relocated their family to Houston, TX, where Jimmy trained as a studio intern with Casey Corum for Vineyard Worship USA. They returned to the UK in 2012, where Jimmy took up the role of managing the record label for Vineyard Worship UK&I full-time. In September 2023, Jimmy founded his own music consultancy business. He continues to manage the Vineyard label part-time, whilst also freelancing as a mix engineer, studio drummer and project manager for Integrity Music. Jimmy is first and foremost a musician and ardent music fan, and this is at the heart of all he does. Shortly thereafter he found himself in a Vineyard church plant in central Ohio and has been a part of the Vineyard ever since. Jonathan is particularly grateful for the various Vineyard gatherings throughout the years, and for the people and relationships that have made up these spaces. This week we kick off a new series looking at a week in the life of worship leaders from around the country in various size congregations. Director of the Vineyard School of Worship Mike O'Brien sits down with Nicole Hernandez from Vineyard Columbus in Westerville, Ohio. Nicole, a 4th generation Mexican-American from Southern California, has been part of the Vineyard movement from a young age and has led worship since she was 13. Passionate about bilingual worship and songwriting, Nicole blends Latin musical elements with other styles. She and her husband, Daniel, also serve on the Vineyard Hispanic Association leadership team. In her free time, Nicole loves hanging out with her husband & their two teens, being outside in (almost) all types of weather, and hosting friends with Venezuelan arepas and other delicious meals.

They also discuss how the Father’s love shaped his life, leadership and church, as well as his own parenting. This week, Adam and Nicole Dill talk with Cindy Rethmeier about the early days of the Vineyard, how new songs were introduced, and some of the stories behind the original Vineyard songs. She wrote some of Vineyard’s most well-known anthems (Exalt the Lord, I Bow Down) and served an integral role in children’s worship, penning the songs I Want to be Like Jesus and Good News. Cindy spent 7 years in an Anglican Church writing musical settings for prayers and seasonal antiphons for the liturgy, and her most-recent song — co-written with Vineyard pastor and worship leader Ted Kim — is Kyrie Eléison, a lament based on a prayer of petition used in ancient Christian liturgies translating as “Lord, have mercy.” After many years in Southern California, Cindy currently lives in Tennessee with her husband of over 40 years, Steve. In this episode of The Ferment, Adam chats with Liz Hix about growing up in the Vineyard, the moment when she first felt the Holy Spirit, and her process of becoming a worship leader. Liz shares about her Pacific Northwest songwriter's melancholy, her dreams for future songs, and some tips for those who want to try songwriting. Born in Yakima, Washington to Vineyard pastors John and Judith Hix, Liz grew up half in Washington State, and half in Kansas City. Two years later, Liz eventually made her way to the Portland/Vancouver area, where she’s now the youth pastor of Vancouver Vineyard, a commercial real estate gal in Portland by day, and a local singer-songwriter by night. Liz is a worship leader, Shakespeare aficionado, whiskey appreciator, and a self-described “moody musician with a propensity for silliness.” She’s deeply passionate about writing songs that capture both the sorrow and joys of the human experience. One of her greatest joys is seeing her songs resonate with friends and audience members alike. Liz hopes to record her first EP sometime this year.

In this episode of the Ferment, Adam and Steve Nicholson have a conversation about how to lead a Vineyard ministry time. Steve identifies the distinctives of Vineyard ministry, and they talk about what we can do when ministry time becomes formulaic, and how to recognize what the Lord is doing in people. Steve shares his thoughts on the role of a worship leader in ministry, and what to do when nothing seems to be happening. This is a back-to-basics conversation where Adam asks all the questions you’ve probably wondered at one time or another, and is an excellent training tool for both fresh and seasoned ministry leaders and prayer teams!
Steve Nicholson began ministering as a college student through InterVarsity Christian Fellowship in the early 1970s. After graduation, he moved to the Chicago area where he and several other twenty-something leaders founded a church. That fellowship, begun in 1976 in Evanston, Illinois, placed a high priority on contemporary worship, biblical teaching, openness to the Holy Spirit, and committed relationships as a church family.
In 1981, Steve and a team from the fellowship established a new church in Humboldt Park, a neighborhood in Chicago’s inner city. Both churches joined Vineyard USA in August of 1985, and Steve transferred leadership of the Humboldt Park Vineyard to one of his team members in 1986.
The Evanston Vineyard has since planted nine other congregations in the Chicago area, and another fifteen in other cities or countries. Steve led Vineyard USA’s church planting task force for over twenty years. Steve has ministered to and trained church leaders in India, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Turkey, Lebanon, Brazil, Chile and several Central Asian countries as well as in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The Evanston Vineyard is a diverse congregation from over 50 nations of the world with no majority racial or cultural group. Since 1986 the ministry of the Holy Spirit has been a regular and ongoing strength and emphasis of the Evanston Vineyard.
Steve and his wife, Cindy, live in Chicago. They have three adult children and eight grandchildren.
In this episode of The Ferment, Adam talks with Christina Lowery in a continuation of our short series on raising up leaders. Christina shares about her inclination towards ministry from an early age, and when that calling was named and fostered by her pastor. She talks about how being a life-long church attendee and student of church health eventually led to her role as the Associate National Director of Church Health and Development for Vineyard USA, the effects of COVID on the church she pastors, and what that time of disruption revealed about the discipleship in our congregations. Christina gives an encouragement to tell people what you see God doing in them, and talks about the gift of entrusting youth with Sunday service responsibilities, as well as the value in broadening our expectations of what it looks like to disciple people.
Christina Lowery is the Associate National Director for Church Health and Development. Early in her ministry career, Christina served as the Events Director for a large student internship at Teen Mania Ministries (Acquire the Fire) in Tyler, TX. In 2001, she and her husband Joel joined a local Vineyard Church there, and served on the pastoral team for several years until they were called to move back to Virginia and plant Crossroads Church.
Christina and Joel have co-pastored Crossroads Church in Fredericksburg, VA since 2008. As a Lead Pastor, Christina has been a big-picture thinker and creative visionary, responsible for communicating and driving the vision and mission of the church forward. She finds great joy in preaching and teaching, leadership development, and building systems that foster church health and growth.
In addition to her local leadership at Crossroads Church, she has served in other leadership roles with the Vineyard, such as an Area Leader in Northern and Central Virginia for ten years (2009-2019) and on the Vineyard Women in Leadership Team for the past three years (2018-2021).
Joel and Christina have been married for 23 years and have 3 amazing kids – Hannah (17), Caleb (15) and Zoe (8). The Lowery family loves to travel and so far, their favorite destination is Maui, with its warm sun and beautiful island beaches.

In this special repost episode of The Ferment, Sam shares his journey into worship leading and songwriting as the son of Vineyard UK pioneers Chris and Fliss Lane. From the depths of a life given to the worship of God and the service of His people, Sam brings a treasure of insights to sustain and inspire all of us who serve weekly in the trenches of local church worship ministry. Samuel Lane is a worship leader, songwriter, and recording artist. For over twenty years, he has worked to refine his songwriting, exploring musicality and faith, pouring his life into crafting songs that draw people closer to God. Lane has written and recorded 40 songs with Vineyard Worship, and his songs have been covered by various artists including Jesus Culture. In 2013, Samuel released his debut solo album, The Fire, which Christianity Magazine called “incredible - there hasn't been an album that has captured my attention in such a way for a long time.” In 2018, Lane released The Difference. “Maybe it’s the stripped-down urgency of Lane’s voice, the album’s eclectic sonic treasure-chest or simply the B3 humming throughout, but whatever it is, it’s enough to make you rethink today’s neat-and-tidy Christian music categories” (Pandora Blog, Curators’Choice).
In this intercontinental episode of The Ferment, Adam chats with Bazi Baker in Christ Church, New Zealand about meeting Jesus at a youth camp, and the little seeds his dad planted throughout his life that guided him to where he is today. With a degree in jazz guitar, and a graduate diploma in theology, he has a heart for equipping worshippers musically, spiritually and theologically. He especially loves writing songs that empower the church to be Biblical, well rounded, creative and passionate. In this episode of The Ferment, Casey Corum and Melisa Keller meet up with Ed Piorek at his home in San Clemente, CA to talk about Ed’s first encounter with the Lord after his mom’s death, his introduction to a move of the Kingdom in his life, and what the Lord taught him about identity. Ed shares about the beautiful invitation the Lord offers to seek after what He is doing and join Him in the journey, and the way we are transformed by experiences of mercy and the Father’s love. Finally, Ed leaves us with a wise word for worship communities. Ed Piorek, known as Eddie to his friends, is a Pastor Emeritus, Speaker and Author who helps people connect with the Father’s Love. With 50+ years in ministry, Eddie has a deep connection to the Father’s Love and the enormous impact it can have in people’s lives, including his own. He and his wife Janet (who has been his partner in ministry for the past half century) embody and live out the message of the Father’s Love in their lives. In the mid-80’s, Eddie had a dramatic encounter with God as Father. After years of intense labor in planting the congregation which would become the Mission Viejo Vineyard, and speaking at the Signs and Wonders conferences with John Wimber , Eddie became increasingly aware of a deep-seated fear of failing to perform up to public expectation. In the midst of a palpable experience of that fear, God revealed himself to Eddie as a loving Father. That experience forever changed him, his life message, and ministry. In recent years, Eddie has discovered the treasures of monastic contemplation, which has shown him how to find rest in the Father’s love amidst the ongoing rigors of kingdom ministry. His new book The Eclectic Contemplative (2020) shares his adventures on this ancient path. When he isn’t preaching, speaking or writing, Eddie can be found surfing, gardening, reading, or spending time with his wife Janet in sunny San Clemente, California. In this episode of The Ferment, Adam and Matt Farrand talk about the transition from being a utility player and worship leader to the person in charge of worship administration. That’s right…scheduling, auditioning, and even a spreadsheet or two. After fleshing out how the function of a trellis relates to both grapes and worship ministry, they walk us through some tangible steps in creating and maintaining a catalogue of songs for your church, the process of onboarding new team members and how to co-create a set list. Administration may be your favorite thing, but we’re guessing it’s not. So Matt is here to talk you through it!
Matt Farrand is a veteran worship pastor and church communications strategist with 20 years of ministry experience. As a pastor’s son in a rural church, Matt grew up running sound, fixing gear, making the bulletin, helping lead worship… whatever was needed to make Sundays happen. He was called to ministry at an early age, and has been leading weekly services for more than 20 years. Matt studied worship arts and youth ministry at North Central University in Minneapolis, MN., served Vineyard Church in Maryville, TN for 11 years and is currently the worship pastor at Vineyard Church of the Rockies. In the third episode of our “Pastoring Worship” series, Adam talks with Ted Kim about building a worship community that is fraternal rather than functional. They discuss logistics of creating culture and practicing mutual submission, and how to make the act of worship more humane by respecting people’s humanity as we’re calling them to serve. Ted also talks about laughter as a sign of health in a church community. This is an incredibly down-to-earth conversation that is full of profoundly practical ideas. Ted Kim is the senior pastor of the Evanston Vineyard, having taken over the leadership from Steve Nicholson in early 2020, six days after the church shut down its in-person services due to Covid. He is passionate about the beauty of Jesus, spiritual formation, and building a church for Generation Z. It is also his life mission to bend the heart of the city of Chicago to God through the multiplication and releasing of young leaders. Prior to arriving in Chicago, Ted was a worship pastor and songwriter. He spent the last decade at the Vineyard in Syracuse, NY. For some reason, God’s intention is for Ted to be cold. Ted is the son of Korean immigrants. His mother is the daughter of a South Korean dignitary. His father escaped from North Korea during the war and would later go on to be an industrial engineer. They found each other on the other side of the world in bucolic Kentucky. Ted first attended and interned at the Evanston Vineyard in the 90s, while he was a student at the University of Chicago. Despite the occasional polar vortex, he is delighted (and humbled) to return to Chicago and serve the church that formed him more than any other community in his life. Ted is married to Brittany, an Old Testament scholar. Together they have three children. In the second episode of our “Pastoring Worship” series, Adam talks with Tina Colón Williams about bi-vocational ministry. Tina shares what the Lord has been teaching her about integration, and how the pause provided by COVID allowed her to step back and reevaluate her priorities. Adam and Tina also talk about how church leadership can better include bi-vocational staff. This is an encouraging and practical episode for anyone who feels like they are pulled in multiple directions and are trying to do all of it well. Tina Colón Williams is an accomplished vocalist, immigration attorney, and worship pastor. Born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Tina moved to New Haven, Connecticut in 2005 to attend Yale University, and she and her husband Josh lead the Elm City Vineyard church in New Haven. Tina's powerful vocals are featured on a number of Vineyard Worship releases, including Vineyard Soul: The Chicago Sessions, Roll Like A River, Heaven’s Work and You Are God. The Life of the Mind with Caleb Maskell is the first in our PASTORING WORSHIP series. In this episode of The Ferment, Caleb and Adam talk about the discovery process that the new national team is moving through and how it is shaping the future of Vineyard USA. Caleb also talks about the beauty of embracing reality as Bible people, how the life of the mind has been woven into the Vineyard since the beginning, and how it relates to rich encounters with the Holy Spirit. Caleb and Adam discuss expanding our understanding of what a theologian might look like and lastly, Caleb leaves us with a word for worship leaders.
Caleb Maskell is the Associate National Director of Theology and Education for Vineyard USA. Born in London, he immigrated with his family to New Jersey in 1986, at the age of nine.
Caleb has been involved in leadership in the Vineyard movement for twenty-five years. After spending a gap year at the Toronto Airport Vineyard School of Ministry in 1995, he went to the University of Chicago to study theology, philosophy, and literature in the interdisciplinary undergraduate Fundamentals program. While there, he joined the core planting team of the Hyde Park Vineyard Church, where he served as a worship leader, a small group leader, a setter-up of chairs, and whatever else Rand Tucker asked him to do.
After college, full of questions that had emerged from the beautiful collision of serious academic study and the practical realities of church planting, Caleb enrolled in the M.Div. program at Yale Divinity School. For four years, he immersed himself in the study of theology, church history, and scripture, while also leading worship and working with middle school and high school youth groups. After graduating in 2004, he worked for three years as the Associate Director of the Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale University.
In 2007, along with his wife Kathy and their friends Matt and Hannah Croasmun, Caleb planted Elm City Vineyard Church in New Haven, Connecticut. That year, he also began a Ph.D. program at Princeton University, focusing on the history of American religion, with an additional emphasis in African-American Studies. After moving to Manhattan for four years while Kathy went to seminary, the Maskells ended up in suburban Philadelphia, where Caleb completed his Ph.D, while teaching regularly at Princeton Theological Seminary, and serving as the Worship Pastor at Blue Route Vineyard Church.
Since 2010, Caleb has led the Society of Vineyard Scholars, which exists to foster and sustain a community of theological discourse in and for the Vineyard movement. Caleb is passionate about developing leaders and institutions that will help to produce a healthy, courageous, and hospitable future for the church in the twenty-first century. Caleb and Kathy now live with their two kids, Josiah and Emmanuelle, in the heart of Denver, where Kathy pastors East Denver Vineyard Church.

Prior to joining the staff at First Free, he enjoyed 15 years of vocational ministry experience in a variety of roles and denominational settings. He has had the privilege over the years of being not only a Worship Pastor in the Assemblies of God, Evangelical Covenant Church, and now the Evangelical Free Church, but has also taught theology and biblical studies courses in Christian high schools, directed parachurch ministries, and recorded & released original music. In this episode of The Ferment podcast, Paul and our host Adam Russell have an incredibly nuanced conversation about the way symbols and the meaning we ascribe to them create stories that shape our worldview. Coming on the tail of January 6th and the insurrection at the US Capitol Building, Paul and Adam discuss the mixed symbolism of nooses and Confederate flags displayed alongside “Jesus Saves” signs and the way that mirrors the present state of Christianity and politics in our nation. As the layers are peeled back, Paul and Adam dive into spheres of psychology and theology, examining the symbolism within our church buildings and worship songs, and the effect the convergence of culture and subcultures has on shaping the narrative of our nation, our worship experience, and our lives.

Calvin Rodgers is a Chicago native and drummer who has been credited with revolutionizing the voice of gospel drumming. His parents realized at a very young age that Calvin shared their love for music and an even stronger love for the drums in particular. Both parents worked very hard to invest as much as they could into their son’s promising future. Around the age of 9, Calvin began shadowing his father, a well-known gospel musician, and songwriter, as his personal drummer. This afforded Calvin the opportunity of learning from some of gospel music’s most prolific songwriters, artists, and musicians. By the time he entered high school, he was traveling with GRAMMY-nominated choir master Ricky Dillard & New Generation. Around the same time, he became a part of the Ravinia Jazz Mentors program, spearheaded by jazz pianist, Ramsey Lewis. Upon graduating high school, Calvin began touring with Lewis and learning his way around the studio. While recording a radio commercial for Rice A Roni, Calvin met R&B crooner, R. Kelly. Kelly invited Calvin to join his band for his upcoming world tour, TP2. Upon completion of that tour, Calvin decided to place his focus on becoming a recording drummer. He also began finding his voice as an arranger and a producer. With over 200 live/studio albums listed to his credit, he has also recorded and toured with artists such as R.Kelly, Ramsey Lewis, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Dionne Warwick, Destiny's Child, Ronald Isley, Ernie Isley, Avant, Jonathan Butler, Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, Fred Hammond, Yolanda Adams, Israel Houghton, Donald Lawrence, John P. Kee, Tommy Simms, Tamela Mann, and many, many others. Though quite accomplished, Calvin continues to push himself in all areas while making sure to sow into the next generation through mentoring and private lessons.
In this episode of The Ferment, Calvin and Adam talk about the church as a safe space to raise up musicians and the necessity of continuing to expose yourself to new styles and skillsets to become a well-rounded player. Calvin also gives some solid advice about bringing yourself humbly into unfamiliar gig environments so as to be in service to the songs and the intention of those who hired you while also offering what makes you unique. The conversation touches on investing in upcoming players, staying true to your roots, encouragement for the Vineyard Movement, and Calvin’s personal fermentation process. You won’t want to miss it!

Eddie Espinosa is a well-known Vineyard veteran and pioneer in the modern worship movement. Eddie was featured on numerous recordings through the years including groundbreaking original two vinyl records from Vineyard Ministries International - "All The Earth Shall Worship" and "He Is Worthy To Be Praised" both releasing in 1982. Eddie's song include "You Are The Mighty King", "Worthy Is The Lamb", and the global worship classic and era-defining "Change My Heart O God". In this episode of The Ferment, Eddie shares his story of being called into a life with Jesus and growing into a worshiper who is known as one who writes love songs to the Lord. This is a very tender episode that overflows with a love for the Lord that is only cultivated in first-hand experience of His goodness and grace.

Dennis Liu is the co-lead pastor at Vineyard of Harvest Church, a multi-generational, multi-lingual, and multi-cultural congregation in Walnut, CA. Dennis earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and then, when God made it clear that he was called to ministry and not to medicine, he began an internship at Vineyard of Harvest Church while pursuing a Master of Arts in Intercultural Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary. He and Adam talk about Asian culture and the pioneering work Dennis has done as an Asian-American pastor in the Vineyard. They also discuss the rise of Anti-Asian racism since 2020 and the COVID-19 virus, as well as the shootings that occurred in Georgia the day before the recording of this episode. Dennis brings a strong and tender word about the need for building intercultural relationships within the Vineyard Movement and his desire to see the invitation to leadership extended to Asian-American leaders.

Kate Cooke is a songwriter, worship leader, mixed media artist and illustrator living and working on the south coast of England with her husband Jimmy, the Director of Production and Publishing for Vineyard Worship UK, and their 2 daughters. She is a co-writer on Vineyard Worship’s album “The Lamb Has Conquered” and her vocals can be heard on Vineyard UK worship albums such as “Spirit Burn: Live from London”, “The Lord Has Come” and “Love Divine”. After completing a foundation year at Wimbledon School of Art in London, Kate decided to travel, got married, had a myriad of jobs while studying literature and then had children, deciding to stay at home with them when they were little. After witnessing the natural creativity in her girls, Kate decided to rekindle her own childhood passion for art once they were off at school and set up a small space in the corner of her bedroom, very tentatively picked up a pencil and started to draw again. This was the start of a journey of creative rediscovery which continues to this day; juggling art, work, motherhood and family life.
In this female-forward episode of The Ferment, Kate is interviewed by Adam’s exceptional wife, Heather Russell. Kate shares stories of experiencing the Holy Spirit in both traditional and charismatic faith expressions, the challenges she faced in balancing motherhood and creativity and the process of anchoring into her multi-faceted identity in the Lord. Kate also talks to us about acknowledging the truth of how God has created us and stepping into that with faithfulness instead of pursuing a road simply because it is perceived as “more holy”. This is a podcast by the women but for the people. Men, you are welcome here too.

He and Adam dig into the context of some of King’s most famously quoted doctrine and discuss the ways in which the soundbites don’t fully match up with his beliefs and intentions, particularly the ideas of nonviolence and protest as a mechanism for change. This is an incredibly educational and challenging episode that calls for a lot of self-reflection and provides tangible steps towards action.

In her role, Melisa oversees Vineyard Worship Leader Retreats and Rise events, and serves as project manager for all products and releases. She earned her MBA in Hospitality Management, which has enabled her to better enjoy food, wine, good music and good times with family and friends. In this episode of The Ferment, Adam and Melisa discuss emotional intelligence: what is it, why do we care, and how does it affect worship leaders and pastors? Melisa shares about how becoming self-aware allows us to find freedom from our reactionary responses, first by noticing what is happening in our physical bodies and then bringing them to the Lord and allowing Him to speak, often revealing things to us about our formative experiences. Emotional Intelligence leads us to an awareness of how we move through the world, and also allows us to love others better and to build teams marked by grace and understanding. This is an incredibly practical and valuable episode that all humans, but especially leaders, should have in their tool box.

Sandra McCracken’s prolific contributions as a songwriter, modern-day hymn writer, and record producer have brought grace and clarity to her soulful, folk-gospel sound. Whether in a theater or in a chapel, she is a dynamic performer who blurs the lines of what church music sounds like, captivating and inviting audiences to sing along. She is further a founding member of Indelible Grace Music and Rain for Roots (children’s music) and has been a guest writer for Art House America, She Reads Truth, The Gospel Coalition, Christianity Today, RELEVANT Magazine, and more.
In the first episode of season 3, Sandra and our host Adam Russell talk about how songwriting is influenced by the world around us, discovering who we are when our normal affirmations are stripped away and the opportunity that change brings to learn to love each other. We’ve always heard that the two things we don’t talk about at the dinner table are religion and politics, but in this episode of The Ferment we are going to talk about them both and how we navigate them as a unit…or don’t. Featuring conversations with 8 different pastors spanning gender, racial, cultural and political divides, we hear the perspectives of just about every ideology that exists amongst people who study the Bible and love Jesus deeply.
Up first is Shane Claiborne, a prominent speaker, activist and best-selling author who founded The Simple Way in Philadelphia and worked with Mother Teresa in Calcutta. He is followed by David Englehardt, pastor of Kings’ Church NYC in Manhattan and founder of Englehardt Law, and Rose Madrid Swetman, who is currently the Regional Leader for Vineyard USA in the Northwest Region and an Adjunct Professor and Moderator for the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. Next we hear from Montel Richardson, who pastors a 172-year-old historically black church in Campbellsville, KY and founder of the H.O.P.E. Project, which seeks to be of service to the community in practical ways. Parker Frey is a pastor at the Oxford Vineyard Church in Ohio, and Jason Coker is the Lead Pastor at the Oceanside Sanctuary in California, as well as a member of the Human Development faculty at Cal State San Marcos. Finally, we wrap up with Melody and Bud Winderweedle, pastors of Ekklesia Vineyard in Chattanooga, TN.
With such a diverse group of pastors, the conversations cover topics of pro-life vs. pro-birth, moral hierarchies and how they affect our priorities as Christians, the value of face-to-face conversations, how we navigate racial unrest and the beauty of practicing lament. This episode provides valuable opportunity for developing empathy and learning to love our brothers and sisters in Christ during an extremely polarizing season.

Steve Cuss is the author of the influential book, "Managing Leadership Anxiety: Yours and Theirs” (published by NEXT Leadership Network), and serves as lead pastor at Discover Christian Church in Broomfield, CO. On today's episode, Steve and Adam discuss chronic anxiety and its effect on our personal lives, our teams, and the society in which we live. This is an important conversation, especially in the current global pandemic.
From Steve's website:
I love leaders, and I see how much pressure they carry. My particular concern is to bring relief by equipping them with tools for individual and team health. I especially enjoy helping leaders break long stuck patterns in themselves and their organizations.
I cut my teeth on leadership anxiety when I served as a chaplain at a level one trauma hospital. The hospital sent us into every conceivable human experience and we had nothing but our wits and the presence of God to get us through. In that baptism of fire, I learned how to pay attention to what was going on under the surface of my own life, and also the dynamics between family members. One of the supervisors was Murray Bowen’s student, so I was steeped in family systems theory and then later studied it and cybernetics more formally in graduate school. My unique experience and training deepened my leadership capacity to manage anxiety and notice it in groups. I have sixteen hundred hours of supervised ministry in Clinical Pastoral Education. I hold a Master of Divinity from Emmanuel Christian Seminary where I focused on Hebrew Scriptures and Family Systems. My thesis was based on the Hebrew Scriptures’ dignity laws in Leviticus and Exodus and how a suburban church can engage local and global poverty through the lens of reciprocity and dignity rather than charity.
Since 2005, I have served as Lead Pastor of Discovery Christian Church in Broomfield, Colorado, an innovative and entrepreneurial church that has grown from 150 to more than 1000 in weekly attendance. The church intentionally welcomes spiritual seekers and skeptics and is passionate about partnerships that break the local and global poverty cycle. I have also served at a mega church in Las Vegas, on a ranch for struggling teens, and as a youth minister in the Appalachian region.
I was privileged to grow up in Perth, Western Australia, in an adventurous family of origin. After moving to the United States for theological study, I married Lisa and together we have two sons and a daughter, in whom I take great delight. When I am not working, you can find me laughing with my family, knee-deep in a trout stream, or trying a guitar I cannot afford at a local music store.

Millennial Whoa (also Millennial Whoop)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The millennial whoa (whoop) is a melodic pattern alternating between the fifth and third notes in a major scale, typically starting on the fifth, in the rhythm of straight 8th-notes, and often using the "wa" and "oh" syllables. It has been used extensively in 2010s pop music and modern worship music.
This week on the podcast Adam sits down with five millennial worship leaders and influencers to discuss calling and vocation, their hopes and aspirations, misconceptions about their generation, and many other topics.
Featured on the podcast are Alexandria Faison (Davenport, IA), Job Ang (Walnut, CA), Sarah Emano (Fort Collins, CO), Sam Crabtree (Cañon City, CO), and Rian Emano (Overland Park, KS).
This special episode of the Ferment was recorded live at the Songs & Stories event in August 2019 in Campbellsville, Kentucky. It features a wide-ranging panel discussion on the topics of constraint, comparison, sustainable creativity, and numerous other topics. The panel includes past podcast guests John Mark McMillan, Taylor Leonhardt, Fran Pratt, Ted Kim, and Jared Boyd. The panel is moderated by our host Adam Russell.

On this episode, she recounts her journey — from growing up Southern Baptist to finding the Vineyard (replete with strong coffee and rock’n’roll) to finding significant life in the contemplative tradition of the Church. The Litanist posts weekly Litanies at www.franpratt.com and extra monthly litanies and content for her patrons at www.patreon.com/franpratt
John Mark McMillan is a platinum-selling songwriter and recording artist best known for his songs "How He Loves," "Future/Past," and "King Of My Heart," co-written with his wife Sarah.
John Mark is known for bending genres and defying categorization by carving out his own unique and independent path. With an ear for melody and a poet’s eye for metaphor, no topic has been off-limits. While each of his albums over the past decade have continued to explore new territory, it’s McMillan’s ability to give lyric and language to the human experience that many consider his greatest gift.
McMillan is no stranger to success with nearly half a million monthly listeners on Spotify and 40 million Spotify streams, but he won’t let those things define him. He’s learned a lot about himself since his previous studio album Borderland, which held a Top 15 spot on the iTunes Albums chart and No. 41 on Billboard’s Top 200. “I’ve found that there’s a profound restlessness in the gap between the ideals of youth and the realities of adulthood,” says McMillan, “even when, especially when, you get what you wanted.”
In this compelling follow-up to their previous Ferment conversation, Adam and John Mark first discuss John Mark’s upcoming record — diving into his production and writing process. They then explore the topic of deconstruction and its purpose in our journey. Lastly, they examine the idea that our creative work allows the very personal to become the most universal in connecting with people.

Her latest release, RIVER HOUSE (available on iTunes and Spotify), has garnered praise for its warm, spacious production and soul-stirring songwriting.
In this inspiring conversation, Taylor and our host Adam Russell explore Taylor's journey as a songwriter. From the "brackish waters" of writing for both the Church and outside world to the role hospitality plays in our songwriting, Taylor's creative self-awareness invites us to dive deep in this special podcast!
