We talk about the album, Novak's coming out experience, and how they've trained their audience to adjust to a different sound.

Album of the Week: Doc Feldman -- A Healthy Dose of Anxiety

The first half of the album is a healthy dose of some anti-anxiety; this album is a bit of a left turn for Doc, veering away from heartland rock and ploughing full-speed ahead into 70s-style Southern rock, like we heard on “Let Me Love You.” But Doc doesn’t make things simple. Even with that easy ridin’ music, these lyrics are gorgeous and thoughtful. Meanwhile, “Heavy Edges,” where the album gets its title from, is an almost chamber pop jeremiad about living in late-stage capitalism: one that would do Two Cow Garage proud. This is on my album of the year list to revisit in December.

Anyone familiar with their work knows that the Big Damn Band does nothing but dance songs, but this time around the trio is playing with as much urgency as fun. Regardless of the events of 2020, there's always hard times for people somewhere, and there've been plenty of hard times since 2016. The reverend and his revelers take the blues to an elemental level, one where venting about difficulties takes as much pride of place as having fun.

Album of the Week: Melissa Carper -- Daddy's Country Gold

I also wrote this up in No Depression. I can’t say enough that Melissa Carper is so freakin smart. Daddy’s Country Gold is vintage-style excellence, but it also subverts classic country music and insist on adding a queer presence there. As we’ll see on “Makin’ Memories,” a lot of this album is about questioning the past, and what really happened, and maybe seeing new things in it that we didn’t before.

Album of the Week: Semler -- Preacher’s Kid I don’t have Grace Baldridge’s experience of growing up queer and Evangelical, but you don’t need to be Christian to have shame around being queer. Before I get into the album, I do want to point out that Baldridge pulled a Lil Nas X and listed this album under Christian music -- after all, it is about their experience with the religion. And it’s music. And it has since shot up to #1 of the Apple Music Christian charts. Maybe it’s Baldridge’s gravelly voice; maybe it’s the way they expertly intertwine their experiences of pain, humor, awkwardness, and empowerment. Album of the Week: Mary Halvorson -- Code Girl  I don’t know enough about jazz to say anything educated about this album. But from the perspective of someone who’s into guitar-based music, Halvorson is incredible. She can shred as hard as any hair metal band, but chooses her moments of maximalism carefully. Code Girl is a brief visit into a universe with epic vistas and narrow windows. And if you’ve been listening to rock’n’roll for any period of time, you’ll appreciate a jazz take on the old “I’m sick of touring” song. Album of the Week: Pony Bradshaw -- Calico Jim This album is rife with intensely passionate songwriting and a true sense of place. On Calico Jim, Pony Bradshaw explores the underbelly of Appalachia -- and a path for the future. These are punk rock lyrics with traditional backing, a potent combination in Bradshaw’s hands -- add in the emotional conviction in his performance and you’ve got an electric combination. Album of the Week: Roof Beams -- This Life Must Be Long

I’ve enjoyed the Maryland-based Roof Beams’ brand of authentic folk rock for some time now. Speaking of time, the band had plenty of time on their hands this spring and summer and recorded their parts for This Life Must Be Long from home. This works well, with the band sticking to a guitar-forward sound that I feel is becoming less popular. But at the end of the day, you need powerful voices and beautiful songwriting at the forefront. Don’t worry -- Roof Beams has that on here, with songs that are heartbreaking, vulnerable, and joyous. This is an album that will make you feel all the feels you may have been numbing yourself from in 2020, and it’s fitting that we get it at the end of a difficult ride.

Album of the Week: CF Watkins -- Babygirl CF Watkins has found that sweet spot between pop and Americana -- a brass ring that many recent artists have shot at and missed the mark. It helps that Watkins’ lyrics are astute and journalistic in their approach to detail. If you put them down on paper, these would be intricate and observant character studies of women and girls on the precipice of society’s expectations. Watkins brings a distinctly feminine perspective to her songs: these are stories of women -- specifically -- bound up in the expectations of others. Women who fearfully, casually, or confidently slash those bonds. Babygirl reminds me of Erin Rae’s stunning Putting on Airs: the observations of someone who takes pleasure seeing just how far outside the lines she can color while proudly resisting the instructions in the first place. 1. Rachel’s students are getting creative, but not in the ways you’d want them to. Also, hi everyone in India! Album of the Week: Izzy Heltai -- Father I’ve been a supporter of Izzy’s since he first sent me a song through SubmitHub all on his own. For his first album, though, Heltai pulled out the big guns -- and deservedly so. Father is nothing if not emotionally naked -- a study in painterly lyrics, and Heltai’s theatrical delivery doesn’t hurt either. What stands out most, though, is the album’s lush production, an impressive demonstration of vision and control for a debut album. My interview with Izzy will be out on Country Queer Spotlight in a few weeks, and there you’ll be able to learn more about his workman-like approach to writing, and how his experience as a trans man has impacted his work as a musician. 1. I was super late getting this one out, so everyone gets to hear the Patreon songs! Also, found poetry! Album of the Week: Lydia Loveless -- Daughter Daughter finds Americana stalwart Loveless at the ebb of significant upheaval: a divorce, a relocation, a cathartic but tumultuous outing of bad practices at her previous label, Bloodshot Records, the reverberations of which are still being felt three years later. But all of that has led to one thing: out with the bad, and in with the good. On Daughter, Loveless is searching for answers amidst a way forward. She’s continuing to explore that sort of disco pop that’s marked her last few releases, though that sense of freedom has also drawn her to explore some back-to-basics Americana with much more sure-footed songwriting. It’s still a Lydia Loveless album, after all, and there are plenty of albums to cry, sip, or smoke along to: whatever it is that helps you feel washed clean after a good bout of searching the bottom of your soul. 1. Album of the Week: Matt Woods -- Mornings After Matt Woods’ new EP Mornings After is signature Woods: his powerhouse vocals make the stories of small peoples’ pain operatic in scope. Woods can crank it up and get people dancing as well as anybody, all with a twinkle of his eyes and a workingman’s righteous fury. But on Mornings After, as the title suggests, Woods slows things down a bit, giving us one of his more contemplative works to date. Mornings After has a little more country soul than his past few releases, but all of the heart and explosive energy you can expect from Woods. No matter what the song sounds like, though, Thomas absolutely RIPS on guitar. Her songs are beautiful, too, relating the life of a queer black person in the Midwest with skill and grace. Album of the Week: Hayley Thompson-King -- Sororicide

This album is so cool. Thompson-King is a woman with intense artistic vision: her debut Psychotic Melancholia introduced the main themes on Sororicide. Thompson-King, a trained opera singer, used her sophomore album to tell the story of a woman (who may or not be the artist herself) whose artistic vision is so all-consuming she’s convinced it’s the voice of the twin she absorbed in utero. Thompson-King uses this album to explore the musical motifs throughout her life so far: New York punk, opera, and Americana. It’s a bold and adventurous vision and Thompson-King and her band realize it with aplomb.

Scott Cook’s voice -- vocally and lyrically -- is as clear-eyed, optimistic, and straightforward as ever. I lost track of Cook for a while but he’s produced some of my favorite music that I’ve reviewed in 9 years of Adobe & Teardrops. Tangle of Souls is the medicine we could all use right now. As much as I enjoy the wave of experimentalism in Americana lately, at the end of the day you need great lyrics and a guitar and that’s what Cook does best. 1. Roadside Graves is a formerly Brooklyn-based band that’s now in New Jersey, this album is about learning how to walk away from situations. I had a really hard time picking two songs to feature: Roadside Graves are that rare combination of sonically experimental with the lyrics to back up their chops. I was supposed to be in New Orleans this week but I’m still taking vacation! It’s our very first podcast crossover with Country Down Under! Country Down Under is a charming podcast from -- you guessed it -- Australia hosted by Tamlyn Butwell and Amy Wescott.

Each episode is a deep dive into a specific artist and their discography. Since both hosts self-identify as queer, they play my favorite game where they read queer subtext into a lot of these songs. The series also features some out queer country artists, too!

This week is a deep dive into Troy Cassar-Daley, one of my favorite artists whom I’ve discovered thanks to CDU. Cassar-Daley is of aboriginal descent and his first hit, “Dream Out Loud,” is definitely the first country song with a didgeridoo. I also included “Black Mountain” for the same reason; also, it’s interesting to hear someone from outside the US provide commentary on our history, given our similarities with Australia.

Sorry, pals. Not feeling up to recording this week so you can read what I have to say about all of these wonderful people in the show notes! Hope you all have had and are having a wonderful holiday week! 1. 2 AM Wake Up Call -- “I Don’t Know What’s Bad For Me” (This Is Enough)

2 AM Wakeup Call has been making music since 2017, describing his music as “Southern Emo.” What calls me to these two songs are his deep-cutting vulnerability (it’s not enough you see a man talk about feeling physically used) and playful instrumentation. 2. Ella Marie Salter -- “White Flag” (Beverly) Hailing from Southern Alabama, Salter has a truly impressive voice. She belongs in the pantheon of country music’s great singers -- and her songwriting ain't bad, either 3. Michelle Brooke -- “Storm” (Single) I wrote this song up a few months ago for The Boot! As a queer writer, I think it’s really important to lift up all LGBTQ voices in the roots music community. I look forward to more allies joining me this year! Speaking of allies, I love that Rachel Hurley and Frank Keith at Sweetheart PR are going above and beyond to work with queer artists, even if they’re struggling financially. As for Michelle Brooke, she’s another addition to that pantheon of great voices. A self-described theater kid growing up, she brings that Broadway pizzazz to the barnhouse. This song is so cathartic in so many ways and is about the end of her first same-sex relationship after coming out. 4. The Strangemakers -- “Shot Down” (Off the Floor) The Strangemakers are a decorated folk rock band from Canada. You can hear the assurance in their groove on “Shot Down” and it reeled me in. Patreon listeners will hear “Wait On Me,” which sounds really familiar to me, but I couldn’t figure out if it was a cover and didn’t have time to ask them. Anyway, it’s been stuck in my head for a whole two weeks. 5. Stephanie Anne Johnson and the Hidogs -- “Take This Love” (Take This Love) You may know Stephanie Anne Johnson from The Voice; on this album she enlists some of Seattle’s best. And yeah -- one more for that pantheon. I love the warmth in her lyrics and confidence in her performance! 6. El Cantador “My Way” (Translation Wave) This is one of my deep dives into the ol’ Adobe & Teardrops vault. Translation Wave came out in 2013 and it seems to be their last release; the band was led by Heath Underwood, who now has a band called BUNCH, whose 2015 album I wrote up. 7. “Lay Me Down” -- Brendan Kelly and the Wanderers (Too Late to Pray: Defiant Chicago Roots) Bloodshot Records just celebrated their 25th anniversary with this fantastic comp album. It shows the beauty and diversity of Chicago’s roots music scene. 8. Nilufer Yanya -- “In Your Head” (Miss Universe) I was gobsmacked after Nilufer Yanya’s performance on World Cafe. Anyone who thinks rock’n’roll is dead needs to shut their soundhole. 9. Sid Kingsley -- “Sweet Viriginia” (Single) Kingsley grew up playing jazz in a small town. When he joined the Coast Guard, he was encouraged to continue playing sax. After leaving the Coast Guard and moving to Richmond, VA, he found that he couldn’t avoid his calling anymore and took the plunge with his first album. So far, it’s shaping up great. 10. Lizzie Huffman and Her Brother’s Band -- “Tumblers and Tea” (Lizzie Huffman and Her Brother Band) Another one from the vault. I can’t find any online presence for Lizzie Huffman, so if you know where she is please let her know there are still people enjoying her music. Meanwhile, you can tell how old this song is because she talks about tight jeans -- as a good thing! Pretty sure it’s from 2011. 11. Stevie C. Bowen -- “Be Kind” (Music From the Rooms of My Head) Hailing from Brooklyn and with a moustache that might make Von feel jealous, Bowen doesn’t have much biographical info out there. But maybe that’s because his guitar needs to speak for itself. 12. Adam Hill -- “Magnetic North” (Water in the Draw) A couple weeks ago I mentioned on Twitter that I was finally getting more honest-to-goodness alt-country through SubmitHub. Adam Hill is one of those people. While Hill describes himself as an inventive musician, he’s sticking to three chords and the truth here and I love it.
